Evelyn Mae Arnold
KLEMME
- Evelyn Mae Arnold, longtime resident of Klemme, died suddenly at the
age of 89, on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012. A private family service will
take place at a later date in Klemme.
Those wishing to express their sympathy through a memorial may do so to
the family at P.O. Box 236, Klemme, IA. Those memorials are appreciated
and will go to a charity or organization that Evelyn supported.
Evelyn Mae Arnold was born on March 2, 1922, to Elmer and Ellie (Lau)
Arnold. She grew up on the family farm near Klemme that her parents
owned and operated.
Her childhood involved a lot of time in the summer playing on the
farmstead with the neighborhood kids. Cold winters were not to Evelyn's
liking for she was found inside playing with doll and other toys to be
best for her. During these early years, Evelyn developed her fondness
for barnyard cats, a liking that stayed with her through her entire
life.
Grade school at the riverside country school near the Iowa River south
of Klemme was her first step in her education. Most days she walked with
other students the mile trek to school. Klemme High School was next.
Evelyn played in the school band and was also active in other
extracurricular activities.
Occasionally in the summer she joined the youth group at the Methodist
Lake Okoboji Camp for study and social events. She had made many Klemme
friends and also visited with her aunt, Amanda Tice, in Mason City and
made numerous friends with the neighborhood girls. As a young lady,
Evelyn went to teachers college summer school in Cedar Falls and the
fall of that year she graduated from high school in 1939.
She started her lifelong teaching career in the same riverside school
where she was a student. Evelyn continued her education throughout the
years and received her B.A. degree from Upper Iowa.
After teaching in several country schools, Evelyn taught in Meservey,
Humboldt and also the Charles City school system, where she was a member
of the Alpha Delta Kappa organization. In Charles City, she survived the
destructive tornado by remaining in her apartment until it was over.
Evelyn had an aging mother in Klemme and during this time for many years
Evelyn finished her teaching duties then ran home to tend to her mother.
Teaching wasn't Evelyn's only interest. Evelyn enjoyed yearly visits to
the Iowa State Fair and to the Clay County Fair. Evelyn even enjoyed
tractor shows, which she preferred antique tractor shows. Evelyn kept in
touch with her students and fellow teachers even after retirement
through various meetings, and letters.
Although she traveled the Western U.S.'s deep gorges and rugged
mountains, those didn't appeal to her. Evelyn preferred Iowa. She liked
to visit her nieces and nephews and remembered them with gifts on their
special days. Family dinners, reunions and various family activities
were among her list of enjoyable things.
After retirement, Evelyn continued to reside in Klemme and shared a home
with her brother, Wilbur Arnold. She grew frail, but energetic and
continued on with the activities she loved. It is impossible to
summarize her life in a few paragraphs and her life touched so many
others in their memories.
Evelyn is survived by her brothers Wilbur and Bruce Arnold and several
nieces, nephews and cousins.
Evelyn is preceded in death by her parents, Elmer and Nellie Arnold;
brothers Curtis and Roy Arnold; and several aunts and uncles.

Lore Becker
ALEXANDER - Lore Becker, 82, of Alexander, passed away in her sleep
on the morning of March 5, 2012, at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. She
had been admitted a few days earlier for difficulty breathing.
Services will be held at the First Reformed Church in Alexander, at 9
a.m., on Saturday, March 17, with coffee to follow.
Lore, the second daughter of Hans and Magda Marschall, was born May 27,
1929, in the town of Insterburg in the providence of East Prussia,
Germany. Lore's and her brother's and two sisters' childhood was
disrupted by the Second World War as the family was forced to relocate
twice, ending up under Russian occupation. In 1946 the family was
allowed to relocate to Neustadt-Holestein in the northern part of West
Germany, where Lore's father was released from a prisoner of war camp
and the family began to build their new home.
Lore, then 17, went into training as a housekeeper, working on a farm,
where she first met her future husband, Herbert Becker, who was also 17,
and in training as farmer. He was destined for a continent away, to work
on his aunt's farm near Sheffield, Iowa. Lore went to England to work as
a nanny for two years, and returned to Germany in 1952. She worked in a
bakery and pastry shop. Herbert found his way back to Germany as an
American soldier, earning his U.S. citizenship for his service, and in
December, 1954, the two were married. Their first child, Anne, was born
in 1955, before they moved to America, settling in Sheffield briefly,
before Herbert began working for General Mills, and the family moved to
Belmond. By 1959, the young family had added two sons, Hans and Karl,
and had outgrown the small house they rented.
They purchased a home in Alexander, where they raised their three
children and lived until Herbert passed away in 2011. They were active
members of the First Reformed Church of Alexander, Herbert becoming a
deacon and Lore serving as the president of the Women's League for ten
years.
Lore was also a member of the Federated Women's Club which started a
library in the jail cells of the old town hall. Lore was the town
librarian for 29 years and oversaw the building of the new library. She
also served as a the librarian for the CAL school in Alexander, as a Den
Mother for Cub Scouts, as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher,
taught German language adult education classes for the North Iowa Area
Community College, and served for several years on the Alexander Town
Council.
Lore was preceded in death by her loving husband of 56 years, her
parents, and her brother, Jurgen. Herbert and Lore were people of simple
needs and simple means, who possessed an incredible ability to create
and nurture. To them, the remains of old buildings were the raw material
to build an addition onto someone's home, and the simplest things such
as old barn board or pinecone, could be turned into works of art or a
craft class for neighborhood children. They loved and gave of themselves
to others as they loved each other. Their home will be remembered as a
place of daily social gathering, where, whomever dropped by, was welcome
to afternoon coffee with Lore's baked goods, and for the beautiful and
bountiful variety and abundance from their garden that drew viewers from
across the state, decorated the church weekly and that, given freely,
stimulated taste buds of everyone they knew. Even on the coldest winter
day, there was a taste of summer in Lore's jams and jellies, and the hot
summer sun in Herbie's special seasoning and dried peppers. Lore is
remembered by many for her love of reading and passionate delivery of
children's stories during Story Hour at the library. Regardless of your
age or interest, you could depend on Lore's recommendation for the next
book on your reading list.
Lore spent her final year living in her own apartment near family, and
enjoyed the arrival of her fourth great-grandchild, as well as her
passions for producing hand-crafted works of art, and reading. As her
final book recommendation, she thoroughly enjoyed all seven books of the
"Harry Potter" series, recently reading them all in about three weeks.
The family and community of Alexander, mourn the loss of this loving and
caring soul, who now shares eternity in God's hands, with her loving
husband, Herbert.
Lore and Herbert are survived by their three children: Anne, Hans and
Karl; five grandchildren: Terry Becker, Shannon Santos. Kristen Meyers,
Karri Becker, Karlye Becker; and four great-grandchildren: Steven
Santos, TJ Becker, Savannah Becker, and Keatyn Becker; Lore's two
sisters, Helga Grage and Anne-Marie Skovreneck, still live in Germany.

BRITT - Kathryn Lorena Meyer, 68, of Britt passed away Sunday, March
11, at Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt, Iowa.
Funeral services for Kathryn Meyer will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday,
March 15, at the Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center Street W., in Britt.
Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Visitation will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 14, at
Ewing Funeral Chapel, in Britt and will continue one hour prior to the

One cannot capture in so few words the strength of character and courage
she possessed. This was demonstrated by the battle she fought for 17
years against emphysema, living the best life she could, while
maintaining her "one of a kind" sense of humor. We cherish the memories
of the countless hours she spent playing cribbage and chatting with her
Deaf family and friends via the video phone.
Through it all, Kathryn remained resolute in her faith in the Lord Jesus
Christ. In the end, she said that Jesus was with her and that she was
ready to go home.
Kathryn, the daughter of Raymond and Juanita Billings was born December
7, 1943, in Des Moines. She attended the Iowa School for the Deaf in
Council Bluffs. Kathryn was united in marriage with Gerald C. Meyer on
December 30, 1962, at the Britt Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her three children, Duane and his wife Dixie of Iowa
City, Joseph and his wife Julie of Columbus, Neb., and her daughter
Patty of Tempe, Ariz.; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Marjorie
Thompson of Des Moines, and Candace Broveak of Sioux City, and a brother
James Billings of Carlisle.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Darrell in
2010.
Her wish in life was, "to make sure her name was in the Lamb's Book of
Life".

of St. Timothy, 707 89th Ave. N.E., Blaine, Minn. (763-784-1329.)
Dodie was a resident of Mesa, Ariz., and Ottertail Lake, Minn. Anyone
who has been graced by the radiant smile of this beautiful woman has had
the honor of encountering a treasured daughter, loved sister, deeply
beloved wife, fiercely loyal, loving mother, fun loving grandmother (who
rode a hot dog and jet ski!), and treasured friend.
Born in Wahpeton, N.D., Dodie married the love of her life, Conrad Dale
Rowe, in 1953. Together they have four wonderful children: William
(Kristy, Otsego, Minn.), Scott (Kathleen, Jamestown, N.D.), Veronica
(Charles Schell, Eau Claire, Wisc.), and Jeffery (Mason City, Iowa), who
in turn graced them with an even dozen grandchildren and their
respective spouses. Dodie was also deeply loved by a large extended
family.
Dodie doted on and was extremely proud of all of her family. Besides
creating an unbreakably bonded family and keeping her husband and family
perpetually amused, Dodie's interests in life included Bridge, cooking,
singing, tennis, golf, and swimming. In spite of the fact that Dodie
claimed no artistic ability, she was a gifted sculptress. Dodie also
achieved the rank of Silver Life Master in Bridge, and even as this is
being written, is working on Gold, Diamond, and Grand Life Master in
Heaven.
Among the angels waiting for Dodie are her parents and brother;
Lawrence, Veronica, and William Kinn. Dodie is deeply missed by all the
people whose lives were bettered by her presence. Through the memories
of all who love her, Dodie lives on forever.

Glenn DeBerg
BRITT
- Glenn DeBerg, 65, of Britt, passed away Sunday, March 11, 2012, at his
home in Britt.
Funeral services for Glenn DeBerg will be held on Friday, March 16, at 1
p.m. at the Christian Reformed Church, 569 Main Avenue North, in Britt,
with Pastor Joel DeBoer officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen
Cemetery in Britt.
Visitation for Glenn DeBerg will be held on Thursday, March 15, from 5
until 7 p.m. at Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. West, in Britt, and
will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Glenn, the first of nine children, was born in Sibley, on February 8,
1947, to Alvin and Frances (Mulder) DeBerg. Being the big brother to so
many siblings helped Glenn develop the leadership and management skills
that would prove useful throughout his working life. He graduated in
1965 from Sibley High School, and worked at several auto and
construction-related jobs. Glenn always had an interest in horses, cars,
and motorcycles, and you could usually find a restored or modified
classic car or truck, or a sweet Harley-Davidson in his garage. Glenn
even owned a car dealership in the late 1980s where he bought and sold
Corvettes.
Glenn's career in concrete and construction took him to many locations
and provided clients with highly skilled labor and a first-rate product.
He owned and operated "B&G Construction" where his workmanship was
envied by many and appreciated by everyone who used him. Glenn made many
close friends wherever he worked or lived, especially in Britt, Iowa
where he has resided since 1995. He spent last winter in southern Texas
where he enjoyed the beautiful weather and developed many new, loving
friendships.
Glenn lived a bold and content life. Although he spent most of his adult
life doing things his way, he believed in Jesus Christ as his Savior at
an early age. And in spite of his strong, independent attitude, a desire
to learn and grow in Christ had been rekindled in recent years. To some
degree "a blessing in disguise," the sickness that took Glenn's life was
a humbling experience, which allowed meaningful reunions, and loving
bonds to be re-established with friends and family members, for which we
are all grateful.
Glenn was married to Ramona Anderson in 1966. Their children are: Kent
DeBerg of Spencer, Kevin DeBerg of Spirit Lake, and Koreen DeBerg of
Washington, D.C. He was married to Darla Frerk in 1975 and their
children are: Jill DeBerg of Primghar, and Ryan (Dawn) DeBerg also of
Primghar, and Lora (Jim) Pierce of Spencer. His six grandchildren are:
Kasey, Dillon, Devin, Jacob, Reyna and Suri. Glenn has spent the last 17
years of his life with his loving companion, Bettie Vega of Britt.
Glenn leaves behind his mother, Frances DeBerg Harms of Boyden, two
brothers: Arlyn (Kris) DeBerg of Phoenix, Ariz. and Ardell (Kris) DeBerg
of Vergas, Minn., and six sisters: Marlys (Stan) Korthals of Boyden,
Helen Kaye (Les) Broek of Sioux Falls, S.D., Mary Jane (Larry) Klaahsen
of Sioux Falls, Colleen (Ardell) Niemeyer of Boyden, Marilyn (Lem)
Maurer of Sioux Falls, and Caroline (Shaun) Hatfield of Lewiston, Idaho.
Glenn has two bonus brothers: Doug (Jeanette) Harms of Johnston and
Steve (Judy) Harms of Slayton, Minn., and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding Glenn to Glory was his father, Alvin DeBerg in 2003 and his
bonus Dad, Johnny Harms in 2011.
The DeBerg family would like to thank all of those who helped make
Glenn's last few months very meaningful and comfortable. We cherish his
memory together, and look forward to a joyous heavenly reunion when we,
like Glenn, can say that we are "Finally Home."

Howard H. Hagman
U.S. Navy WWII
Mason
City - Howard H. Hagman, 93, died Sunday, March 11, 2012, at Hospice of
North Iowa. Howard most recently lived in Mason City, and was formerly
of Brainerd and Minneapolis, Minn.
Visitation will be held Saturday, March 17, at 1 p.m., followed by a
Celebration of Life at 3 p.m. at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126
Third St. N.E., Mason City, Elders of Clear Lake Community of Christ
officiating.
Graveside committal service and interment will be Monday, 1 p.m., at
Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Brainerd.
Howard was born in Minneapolis, on Feb 21, 1919, to Harry and Josephine
(Maley) Hagman, and began traveling to the Crosslake, Minn., area with
his great aunt and uncle at age 10. He graduated from West High School
in Minneapolis and attended St Olaf Collage for pre-dentistry. He worked
for Henry P. Boos Dental Laboratories in Minneapolis, then joined the
Navy in 1942 and served on the USS Euryale, a submarine tender, in the
Pacific Theater as Pharmacist Mate 1st Class in Dental Prosthetics.
In the fall of 1945, during deer hunting season, he proposed to Yvonna
Sowers and bagged his dear for a long season of 65 years of marriage
from June 1, 1946, to Sept. 21, 2011. After the war, Howard was a lead
technician at the Harry C. Hagman Dental Laboratories in Minneapolis as
a Certified Dental Technician, and later with Saber Dental Laboratories.
He established the Hagman Crown & Bridge Dental Service in Brainerd,
serving dentists throughout Minnesota. He was Past-Director of the
Minnesota Dental Laboratory Association, and honored for Clinical
Leadership in Progressive Prosthetic Dentistry. Howard invented a method
for processing dental acrylics that was quickly adopted by the dental
lab industry nationwide for improved quality of dentures and faster
service.
He was a Life Member of the American Legion Post 500 of Crosslake-Fifty
Lakes, and shared in Christian worship at Emily Methodist Church,
Crosslake Evangelical Free Church, and Brainerd First Presbyterian
Church.
Howard and Vona lived in Minneapolis, Brooklyn Center, and many years
near Crosslake. On O'Brien Lake, they cleared a wooded lot by hand
during years of weekends and vacations, and eventually built a cabin
that became their home in 1971. Howard had a great sense of humor, and
felt he became a skilled carpenter since he "cut every board at least
twice" to make it fit. They moved to Brainerd in 1997. Howard enjoyed
many life-long friendships, fishing, hunting, dancing to big band
sounds, and Dixieland Jazz. He was eager to learn new things and explore
current technology. He instilled in his family a sense of appreciation
for the lakes and forests he loved so much. He played piano and wrote
several tunes, and had a chance to meet Red Nichols and the Five Pennies
when he was bartending at the original Log Jam in Crosslake. He enjoyed
musical jam sessions with friends from church, and could always be heard
whistling a tune. He had a creative mind, looking for a better way to do
things. With Vona's help, they kept a meticulous yard and home, were
gracious hosts, and generously assisted with others' needs.
Since Vona's passing in September 2011, Howard lived at Homestead
Assisted Living in Mason City to be near family, and he quickly formed
new friendships at Homestead.
Howard is survived by one son, Cliff (Wanda) Hagman of Mason City; and
one daughter, Mary Jo (Rick) Neumann of Crosslake; six grandchildren:
Nathan (Lisa) Hagman of Acireale, Sicily, Andrew (Tara) Hagman of
Wilsonville, Ore., Angie (Ben) Johnston of Garner, Bill Neumann of
Garner, Joel Hagman of Seattle, Wash., and David Hagman of Mason City,
and twelve great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law Mary Sowers Ludvigson
McAllister, Rochester, Minn., Juanita Reed Cunconan, Dallas, Texas, and
numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Yvonna Sowers Hagman, parents Harry and
Josephine Maley Hagman, step-mother Gertrude Olsen Hagman, and brother
Thomas Hagman.
Howard would encourage gifts to the church of your choice, and memorials
have been established at Crosslake Evangelical Free Church, Brainerd
First Presbyterian Church, and Clear Lake Community of Christ.
