Larry A. Hanson
KLEMME
- Larry A. Hanson, 72, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, in Mason City
after a long battle with lung cancer.
Funeral services will be Friday, Oct. 21, at 11 a.m. at the Klemme
United Methodist Church with a visitation held one hour prior to
service. The Rev. Janet Rieckhoff-Faris will be officiating the service.
A visitation will be held Thursday, Oct. 20, from 5-7 p.m. at the
Andrews Funeral Home in Klemme.
Larry Hanson was born to Lyle and Madeline (Bachman) Sept. 8, 1939, in
Britt. Larry had two half-siblings, Cecil and Carol, and spent much of
his time with his grandparents Willie and Rebecca Hanson. Larry learned
at a young age his true passion of driving a semi truck. On May 24,
1956, Larry married Eva Thiemann in Council Bluffs. This marriage was
blessed with six children: Barbara, Doug, Laura, Ken, Donna and Roger.
The family lived in the Goodell/Belmond/Klemme area for many years
except for two years spent in Colorado when the children were young.
Larry always loved being on the road, traveling from state to state with
his case of Mountain Dew and Sneaker, his black Lab, by his side. He
might not have followed every driving law in the book, in fact most of
the time he merely considered them "suggestions." Larry knew his way
around to circumvent almost every weigh station. Knowing how to get to
the next load station through side roads he would call "squirrel trails"
always trying to get by with that extra round bail of straw or load of
grain that might have tipped the scales on the heavy side.
Larry might not have been the ideal by-the-book trucker but he had a
true calling for it. While working for Warren Transport, he received
many awards including Driver of the Month. He always made his shipment
of goods to the location where they needed to go in time. Larry knew the
ways of the roads and in return he met numerous colleagues, friends and
acquaintances and was known in most of the truck stops. He was always
going out of his way to help a fellow trucker. He had numerous
associates when driving cross-country that were hitchhikers, being
persuaded to be his drivers for periods of time.
Larry had a life full of value and compassion. Some people saw his rough
outer shell, others got the pleasure of seeing his warm, caring heart.
Larry cared for his family and friends. He was always willing to help
out a friend in need for anything he could do, even if it meant driving
across the country. He loved his family dearly and enjoyed his
grandkids' and great-grandkids' company. Larry's love surrounded not
only mankind but his favorite canine companions, Sneaker and Kujo.
Larry's caring heart was vast and deep.
Those left to cherish his memory include his children, daughter, Barbara
Hanson, of Des Moines; sons, Douglas (Marla) Hanson, of Goodell, and
Kenneth (Kelly) Hanson, of Meservey; daughter, Donna (Robert) Roe, of
Des Moines; and son, Roger (Kay) Hanson, of Klemme; grandchildren Amber
(Andy) Pavlovec, Jeff (Tierra) Hanson, John (Shana) Shafer, Jennie
Shafer, April (Alan) Reynolds, Ben Hanson, Danielle Brooks, Megan
(Brent) Willis, and Mathew Hanson; his great-grandchildren Evan Pavlovec,
Riehle Pavlovec, Courtney Hanson, Hailey Hanson, Rylan Shafer, Phoenix
Reynolds, Mackenzie Brooks and Austin Brooks.
He was preceeded in death by his father, Lyle Hanson, his mother,
Madeline Hymas, his step-mother Ila Hanson, daughter Laura Shafer,
son-in-law Ed Shafer, grandson Jeremy Hanson, and his half-brother
Cecil.
Arrangements are being held by Andrews Funeral Homes Klemme, IA,

Charles William "Chuck" McGreevey
MASON
CITY - Mason City lost a good man Saturday afternoon, Oct. 22, 2011,
when Charles William "Chuck" McGreevey 67, Chief Building
Official/Building and Neighborhood Services Director, passed away
unexpectedly at Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 26, 2011, at St.
Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E. Mason City, IA, with the
Rev. Craig E. Steimel officiating. Inurnment will be in Riverside
Cemetery in Charles City, Iowa.
Chuck's family will greet family and friends Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 4-7
p.m. at Hogan-Bremer- Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason
City. Memorials may be directed to the North Iowa Humane Society. (There
is no viewing.)
Chuck was born April 21, 1944, in Charles City, Iowa, the first and only
son/child of Charles Robert and Mary (Deist) McGreevey. Charles R. was
killed in the Battle of the Bulge in Germany in 1945 when Chuck was
about 10 months old. Mary later married Wayne Skyrme. They had a
daughter, Terri.
Chuck attended elementary and high school in Charles City where he
excelled in tennis, track and wrestling. He was a "sprinter at heart"
and in his freshman year he held the record (for several years) at
Charles City High School in the 100-meter dash! His track team won the
Drake Relays 400 meter in 1961 with a record that held for over 30
years! While playing high school football his junior year, his track
career was cut short when he suffered a broken leg. Chuck lettered in
tennis at the University of Northern Iowa, where he was team captain; he
also won the singles in match in 1961. He was a third-degree brown belt
in karate.
On July 12, 1969, Chuck was united in marriage to Karen Suzanne Miller
from Des Moines, Iowa. They immediately moved to Cedar Falls so Chuck
could finish his last semester of college at UNI. He graduated with a
B.A. in Science. They then moved to Mason City and were blessed with a
baby daughter, Tiffany Suzanne, March 16, 1971. Chuck worked briefly for
the Department of Transportation, and then obtained employment, Jan. 4,
1971, with the City of Mason City.
His diverse career with the City spanned more than four decades. (In
fact, if you've owned a restaurant, a tavern, built a house, a garage, a
shed or an industrial building, Chuck had a hand in the process in some
way.) His first position with the City was inspecting restaurants and
taverns! Later, he was the Housing Inspector, then transitioned to the
Building Inspector, the Building and Inspections Supervisor, and the
Chief Building Official and Inspection Services Director, a position he
held at the time of his untimely death.
He was a member of the International Conference of Building Officials,
the Iowa Association of Housing Officials, and the Architects, Engineers
and Building Officials Section of the National Fire Protection
Association.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 42 years, Karen, Mason City; "The Boys"
- three "Man cat" fur-babies, Jonny, Mikey and Billy; and a sister,
Terry (Jambor) and her husband, Bob, Lake Geneva, Wis.; a cousin, Jackie
(Hogan) and her husband, Dennis, and their children, Connor, Riley and
Brady, West Des Moines; Nicholas Van Patten, Des Moines; Ed and Sue
McGreevey, Keokuk, Tom and Karla McGreevey, Keokuk, Iowa; Maureen
McGreevey, LeClaire; sister-in-law, Connie Lou Paulson and her daughter,
Kathie Naylor, Des Moines, as well as numerous other cousins and their
families. The staff in the Building and Neighborhood Services department
are also an important part of Chuck's legacy.
He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Tiffany, who died
shortly after birth; his father, Charles R.; his mother, Mary; his
step-father, Wayne; both maternal and paternal grandparents; some uncles
and aunts also preceded Chuck as did three "Man cat" fur-babies, Daniel,
Cody and Bowie!
