Mildred Alice "Mid" Paulson
DENVER,
Colo. -Mildred Alice "Mid" Paulson, 100, "died at home with a smile on
her face."
Well, she said that she wanted it to happen that way ... and it almost
did. However a year or so ago she fell while in Denver celebrating
Christmas with her family. She went to a beautiful assisted living
facility for rehabilitation therapy for her cracked pelvis. It healed
quickly but by then she felt it might be best to stay there permanently.
Her daughter, Judy, lived in Denver as did many other family members.
Up until this time she had continued to live in and maintain her own
home in Mason City. Her husband, Mel, passed away in 1989. Many years
before the two of them had hatched a plan to encourage unique reunions
of their 35 family members composed of their daughters Joyce and Judy's
mates and children and their mates and children.
Together they created the Family Fun Fund (called FFF) and used it
support the many skiing trips to Colorado, beach resorts in Mexico and
California and the summer trip two years ago to Chesapeake Bay when she
was 98. It was to be her last FFF trip but possibly the most fun trip of
all!
Mid graduated from Missouri Valley, Iowa, high school and moved to Des
Moines to attend the American Institute of Business. She met Mel at
college. During his career he worked for International Harvester Co.,
Federated Mutual Insurance and later formed the Mel Paulson Insurance
Agency. They had a marvelous life together. Mid was a long time member
of the First Congregational Church, PEO, NBL Book Club, Century Club and
Girl Scouts. She was an active community volunteer; her favorite may
have been as Band Festival queen coordinator and band mother in the Paul
Behm era.
None of us can recall a single time when Mid was not happy. She had a
positive outlook on life. Every one of us have benefited and learned
from that. We all want to be just like her.
Another source of great joy for her was the extreme and unusual
closeness she shared with her four sisters, known as "the Beautiful
Peterson Sisters." They were amazing.
Mid is survived by her two daughters, Judy Dixon of Denver, Colo., and
Joyce Price of Clear Lake, Iowa, and their families.
She loved us. We loved her.
Mid had chosen to donate her remains to the
University of Iowa
Medical School (as did Mel) for medical research so that others will be
able to learn how to live to be 100 and be 100% healthy at the same
time.
One more FFF trip is in the planning. This will be a Celebration of Life
at some as yet unknown destination and at an unknown time, just as soon
as all 35 can come up with an excellent idea!
