John Henry Swanson

LAKE MILLS - John Henry Swanson, 96, of Lake Mills and formerly of Lawrence, Kan., died Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.
John's body was cremated and his urn will be buried in Lawrence, Kan., at a later date.

John Henry Swanson (aka "Jim John") was born Dec. 3, 1914, and slipped away from us on March 23, 2011, after a long and fruitful life.

He was born on a farm near Lawrence, Kan., to Martin Swanson (an immigrant from Sweden) and Anna ("Annie") Reddish. He was one of nine children of the family. While he grew up on a farm and first lived in the rural world, he eventually became a valuable worker in the California aerospace industry, assisting in such projects as the Northrop Flying Wing (YB-49).

He had to leave school early in life, both to help on the farm and to find his way through the difficult times of the Great Depression.

After taking a lot of jobs, and traveling by whatever means were available, he landed a job at a gold mine in Cornucopia, Ore. There he met Myra Jane Ruble and they were married Oct. 11, 1935, in Baker, Ore. He and Jane raised three sons, Allan, John Michael and Robert.

After returning to Kansas to be close to his family in Wichita, Kan., he started working for Beech Aircraft as a mechanic. Later in the 1930s John and Jane drove a Model-T out to California, where he started work in the aircraft industry. He stayed in that industry until retirement in 1977, working primarily as an inspector. His last position was as a trusted senior inspector of sub-contractors all over the Southern California area.

John's first love was tinkering with machinery. This love started on the farm and continued into his career in the airplane industry. When his sons were teenagers, they all spent many hours in the garage under the hood of a car. He was still fixing things for his sister, Betty, while in his 90s.

His other passion was golf. He took up the game in the 1930s but a back injury stopped his play during that time. He started playing again in the early 1960s and was still playing in his early 90s. As he entered his 70s he started to "shoot his age", doing so many times. He even scored a few holes-in-one to brag about. John was also an avid card player.
John and Jane were married for 37 years. She passed away from cancer Dec. 7, 1972. John remarried a few years later, and he and Margaret shared their retirement years together in Bella Vista, Ark., where they resided until her passing in July 1993. The last partner of John's life was Beatrice ("Bunny") Scott, with whom he shared the years from the mid-1990s, only parting in 2007 when he entered the John Knox residential facility near Liberty, Mo.

John was intensely proud of his sons, all of whom graduated from college and have been successful in life.

John is survived by his sons, Dr. Allan (Carolyn) of Urbandale, John Michael (Yanna) of Hainan Island, China, and Robert (Sandra) of Box Elder, S.D.; two granddaughters, Stacy Moore of Ogden, Utah, and Kristine Swanson of Mentone, Calif.; and two great-grandchildren, Chandler Jane and Travis Allan Moore.
He is also survived by his sister, Betty Converse of Centerville, Ohio, and numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or the Lake Mills Care Center.

Margaret attended schools in Minneapolis and was a beauty operator during World War II.

When war ended, Margaret met a returning ship's pharmacist's mate, Richard E. "Dick" Eichinger, who was employed at a local drugstore. They married Feb. 28, 1946, in Minneapolis. Their first two sons, Daniel and Harry, were born in Minneapolis. Dick then obtained employment with Abbott Laboratories Pharmaceutical Co. This required Margaret and Dick to move to Galesburg, Ill., where daughter Anita, was born.

Margaret was a stay-at-home mom until her four children were in high school. Margaret then worked many years at Penney's and Bergo's Clothiers in the boys department.

In the early retirement years, Margaret and Dick traveled with a travel trailer across the United States. Health issues retired their travels and they resided full-time in Mason City.

He was engaged in farming for many years and from those skills he moved to Denver and worked in brick and cement work, for the 7UP bottling company, as a welder and on dairy farms.

While driving for the Tramway bus line he became interested in a gal working in the coffee shop, who later became his wife. On Dec. 19, 1954 he was united in marriage to Bernadene Garrett in Greeley, Colo. To this union was born two daughters. They celebrated their 56th Anniversary last December.

In 1972 he received the Governor's Award for his participation.

He was very much a do-it-yourselfer. He was a dotting Denver Broncos fan living in Vikings territory. Alex and Bernadene were "snowbirds" in Boulder City, Nev., with his favorite mother-in-law Irene.

Dean Sunde

BUFFALO CENTER - Dean Sunde, 78, of Buffalo Center died Monday, March, 28, 2011, at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

His memorial ceremony will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 2, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center with Pastor Perry Aalgaard officiating.

His visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, April 1, in the Social Hall at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Buffalo Center, Iowa.

Dean Lowell Sunde was born Oct. 28, 1932, in Buffalo Center to Jonas and Isalene (McCrady) Sunde, the youngest of four sons. He grew up and lived all of his life on the family farm. He graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1950 and served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. He started farming in partnership with his father after the Army and continued farming grain and livestock until his retirement.

Dean married Joan Brue June 2, 1956, at Linden Lutheran Church in rural Thompson and the couple raised two children, Alison and Doug.

Dean was a continuous member of the American Legion for 53 years, including terms as commander and adjutant. He was a 47-year member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where he served as a member of the church council.

Dean was active in politics, serving as co-chairman of the Winnebago County Democratic Party. Highlights of his political passions included two invitations to the White House, one as a guest of President Jimmy Carter for the 1978 State of the Union address and also as a member of the agriculture advisory committee in 1980.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing at Tuttle Lake, area Iowa and Minnesota lakes as well as prize fishing in Canada. Dean loved fun, games and coffee. He won many cribbage championships both at home and in Arizona where they spent the winters for many years. He was always open for a new joke and was known as an infamous tease. The armistice in Korea was signed a month before he was to be deployed "because they heard he was coming," he often touted.

He reminded the grandchildren he was the first Buffalo Center Homecoming King in 1949. And everyone in the family knew chicken pox couldn't clear up until an egg was laid. He believed life is short so laugh as much as you can.

Dean died March 28 from complications following a car accident Jan. 17.

With his past health issues, he and his family learned that every day is a gift; make every word and hug count as though it could be the last. According to his wishes, Dean's body has been donated to the Mayo Clinic.

Dean is survived by Joan, his wife of 54 years; daughter Alison and Garland Hofland, Eric and Amber of Oceanside, Calif.; and son Doug and special friend Laura Bezdicek, Evan, Alex and Chance of Buffalo Center. Extended family includes Ann Sunde, Beverly and Larry Sunde, Tom Sunde and family, Mavis Johnson, Elaine Hetland and Laverne and Judy Brue.
