Byron L. Bales

HAMPTON - Byron L. Bales, 88, of Hampton, died June 24, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton. There will be no visitation. Pastor Paul Beisel and Vicar Roy Berquist will officiate the service. Burial will take place in the Hampton Cemetery.

La Vona Mae Bartlett

WALL LAKE - La Vona Mae Bartlett, age 83, of Wall Lake, passed away on Friday, June 24, 2011, at Loring Hospital in Sac City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 27th, at Peace Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Roger Carlisle officiating. Burial will be at the Wall Lake Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5-7 p.m. today at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake.
La Vona Huse was born on Oct. 13, 1927, in Lincoln, Neb., to William and Martha (Hoppen) Huse. The Huse family moved to Rudd when La Vona was eight. It was there she graduated from high school.

On March 1, 1949, La Vona was united in marriage to George Bartlett at Faith Lutheran Church in Omaha, Neb.

Their first home was on a farm near Wall Lake and La Vona worked at the Coffee Cup Café for about 10 years. They lived and farmed in several areas before moving back to Wall Lake after retiring. La Vona loved helping with the farm work, working in her vegetable and flower gardens, cooking and baking, and had a special interest in interior design. Her other hobbies included golfing, bowling and arts and craft projects.
They enjoyed traveling and spending the cold winters in Arizona. Some of LaVona's favorite travels would be to Washington, D.C., and her last trip to Alaska.

Survivors include her nieces, Pamela (Skip) Hildebrand, of Mason City; Donna Pudenz, of Carroll; Debra (Mike) Daniel, of Lanesboro; Joyce (Mark) Peterson, of Kansas City, Kan.; and Janine Pudenz of Elkhart; nephews, Dean Huse, of Mason City; Darrell (Sandy) Pudenz, of Carroll; and Tom (Diane) Pudenz, of Carroll; brother-in-law, Leon Pudenz, of Carroll; and sister-in-law, Mavis Bartlett, of Wall Lake; and many extended family members.

La Vona was preceded in death by her parents; husband George on May 4, 2007; brother Willard Huse; sister-in-law Norma Jean Pudenz; brothers-in-law, Robert, Vyrl and Harold Bartlett; and parents-in-law George, Sr. and Sadie Bartlett.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Loring Hospice Foundation.

Harlan W. Bigger
U.S. Army Korean War

NORA SPRINGS -Harlan W. Bigger, 79, of Nora Springs, died Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. on Monday, June 27, at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Per Harlan's wish, he was cremated and will have no viewing. Inurnment will be held in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

On Sunday (today), June 26th, a free-will benefit luncheon for Harlan will be served in the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Memorials may be directed to the Harlan W. Bigger Memorial Fund in care of the family.
Harlan was born April 28, 1932, in Ruthven, the son of Elzie and Eva (Parker) Bigger. He graduated Silver Lake High school in 1950 before earning a B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls) and an M.A. from the University of Northern Colorado (Greeley). Harlan also did some post-master's work towards a Ph.D. at the
University of Iowa, University of Maryland and Mankato State University.

Harlan was stationed in Germany while serving two years in the Army during the
Korean War. Harlan taught school and coached for approximately 50 years; at Rockwell (six), Mankato State College (three), and the rest at Mason City High School.

During that time he also officiated baseball, softball, basketball and football games. He retired from teaching in 1995.

He enjoyed playing golf, bowling, and taking care of Squirrel Haven, his four- acre home.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Rita; children, Terry Schultz, Brett (Anita) Bigger, Jeaneal (Patrick) Weeks, and Michael (Denise) Bigger; grandchildren, Isaiah and Kiley Bigger, Brad and Angela Bigger, Evan and Tarah Schultz, and Marshall Weeks.
Harlan was preceded in death by his parents; infant son, Bradley; and brother, Elden.

Howard Bless
U.S. Armed Forces WWII

ST. ANSGAR - Howard Bless, 87, of St. Ansgar, died June 23, 2011, at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 27, at First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in St. Peter Cemetery, Toeterville.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. today, Sunday, June 26, at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School Street, St. Ansgar.

Howard Louis Bless was born Feb. 3, 1924, in Worth County, to Clarence C. and Dora R. (Hartwig) Bless. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church, Rock Township, Mitchell County, and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. He graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1941.

Howard served in the Armed Forces from November 1944-August 1946. After returning home, he farmed with his dad and brother Darold in the Toeterville area. He continued farming until his retirement in 1998, moving to St. Ansgar in November of 1991.

He was married to Marion G. Thompson of London, Minn., on June 14, 1952, in a double wedding with his brother Darold and Marion's sister, Helen, at Deer Creek Lutheran Church, Carpenter. She was a loving wife and mother, a great partner.

He served his church and community in many ways. At church he was a Sunday school teacher and superintendent for over 25 years. He was church chairman several different times, and on the Noard of Deacons.

In the community, he served on the Toeterville Elevator board, Mitchell County Farm Bureau and Township Chairman, Mitchell County Extension Council, Dairy Herdsman of Iowa Board, Cedar Valley Credit Union, Cedar Valley Minute Man Board, Sons of Norway and St. Ansgar Maple Manor Board.

Howard enjoyed fishing, bowling, playing pool and cards, especially with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; playing fast-pitch softball in his younger days, and in later years baking cookies.

Howard is survived by his wife Marion, of St. Ansgar, son Larry (Julie) Bless, of St. Ansgar; two daughters, Lynne (Don) Rustvold, of Audubon, and Larae (Richard) Boatman, of Eldora; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; one sister, Doreen (Carl) Finnesgaard, of Kenyon, Minn.; andbrother-in-law Donald Morasch, of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, one sister, three sisters-in-law, and two brothers-in-law.

Frank W. Bronsema

GREENE - Graveside funeral services for Frank Bronsema were held Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Rose Hill Cemetery, in Greene, with Pastor Gary Hatcher, St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene, presiding.

Frank was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Colfax, a son of Bruno W. and Louisa Nella (Stock) Bronsema, and died Thursday, June 23, 2011, at the Forest City Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

He received his education in the public schools, graduating from Hubbard High School in 1938. Frank later earned his certified tax accountant certification.

Frank and his family moved to Dumont in 1941.

On Dec. 19, 1943, Frank was united in marriage to Thelma Heinmiller at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Greene. The couple bought a farm near New Hampton. Frank farmed and worked for the government in several farm related positions. He also sold seed corn and drove school bus.

In 1969, he sold his farm and built a new home in New Hampton. He then worked for a farm business management firm. In 1970, he became a partner in an implement company. In 1976, he sold his partnership and went to work as a tax accountant for Rob Koster. They lived in Wisconsin, and later in Branson, Mo., in the summer, and worked on taxes in California in the winter. He spent the last few years of his life in Forest City.

Frank enjoyed traveling with his wife, fishing, and visiting with family.

He is survived by his daughter, Sandra Larson; two grandchildren, David and DeEtta Larson, all of Forest City; three sisters, Beverly Schmidt, of Waverly, JoAnn (Art) Mauk, of Marshalltown, Dorothy Thomsen, of Sitka, Alakska; one brother-in-law, Bob Cooper, of Sumner; and several nieces and nephews.

Frank was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma, in 1998; his parents; two brothers, Lester and Lyle; one son-in-law Elvin; several sisters-in-law, and one brother-in-law.

Raymond Gramstad

CLARION - Raymond Gramstad, 87, of Clarion, died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Careage of Clarion.

Funeral services for Raymond Gramstad will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28, at the First Lutheran Church in Clarion, with the Rev. Dr. Ronald Yarnell officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Clarion.

Lawrence "Perry" Hull Sr.
U.S. Navy (1955-1959)

MASON CITY - Lawrence "Perry" Hull Sr., 75, of Mason City, died Thursday, June 23, 2011 of pancreatic cancer at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 27, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Craig E Steimel officiating. Interment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Sunday, June 26, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a Scriptural Wake Service at 7 p.m.

Perry was born the fourth of seven children on Sept. 24, 1935, to Benjamin F. Hull and Adeline (Goodman) Hull.

He graduated from Garner High School in 1955, were he was active in sports and band.

Perry joined the Navy (as his father had) in 1955 and received an honorable discharge in 1959.

He attended one year at Mason City Junior College where he met Maxine Schultz, and then married on June 4th, 1960.

He was blessed with six children: L. Perry Hull Jr., of Mason City, Dr. Nathan M. Hull, of Urbandale, Margo M. Hull-Saunders, of Cave Creek, Ariz., twins Mary and Joseph and Morgan J. Hull of Rochester, Minn.

The majority of his employment was dedicated to Lehigh Portland Cement Co., where he performed Quality Control Lab work for 35 years.

His interests included feeding the song birds and crows, performing his magic coin trick for children, traveling through the U.S. during his annual camping trips with his family, and eventually, world travel with his wife. Wherever he went, he brought out the smiles in those he met.

He was known by many in town throughout his life for his daily bike rides with his dog at his side. He also enjoyed taking rides with his grandchildren.

He had always enjoyed wood working, and of all the incredible items he had created or restored, he always talked of a recent piece of scrap wood he turned into a beautiful hand rail. He always enjoyed the feel of the finished pieces.

Perry enjoyed the past 13 years of retirement by traveling the world, playing cards and games with friends and family, volunteering at St. Joseph's Catholic Church and at the voting poles, fund raising for Cancer Relay For Life, playing his tuba with the New Horizon Band, volunteering at the Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank, and with great passion, visiting his children and grandchildren for all the special occasions. It was with great regret that he was not going to be able to see all his grandchildren grow to adulthood.

He always had time to help anyone who needed it and had been considered a father to, and loved by, many more than just his four children.

He is survived by his wife Maxine Hull; children: Perry, Nathan (wife Paula and children Abby and Katherine), Margo (and husband Richard), Morgan (wife Amy and children Rebekah, Emma, Virginia and Benjamin); sisters: Vivian (Bob) McEldoon, Ivah Johnson, Iris Craig and Nellie (Bruce) Mastin; and sister-in-lawm Joanne (Ivan) Hull. He was also survived by many nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his twin children Mary and Joseph, his parents, and brother Ivan Hull.

Arvil L. Stille
U.S. Army WWII

GARNER - Arvil L. Stille, 84, of Garner, died Friday, June 24, 2011, at Mercy Medical Center- North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner, with the Rev. Brian Lund officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., Garner, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Arvil L. Stille, the son of Earl and Dena (Greiman) Stille, was born Oct. 7, 1926, in Garner. He graduated from Garner High School and served his country in the U.S.
Army in Germany during World War II.

Following his honorable discharge, he attended Drake University where he played football and received a B.A. in education in 1951.

Arv then returned to Garner and began working with his father for the newly named Stille and Son Construction Company.

On June 25, 1960, he married Sandra Elsing in rural Geneva. They lived in Garner where they raised their two daughters, Deb and Mary. Arv was a devoted outdoorsman and an avid Vikings fan.

He was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church and a 25-year member of the Garner Volunteer Fire Department.

Arv is survived by his wife, Sandra, of Garner; two children, Deb (Curt) Miller, of Hampton, and Mary (Darrin) Gillett, of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren, Rachel Miller, Kaitlyn Gillett and Luke Gillett; and a brother, Russ (Emily) Stille, of Maple Grove, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Clint Stille.

Betty Elman

BUFFALO CENTER - Betty Elman, age 83, of Buffalo Center, died Thursday at the Titonka Care Center in Titonka.

Services will be 2 p.m. today, Monday, June 27, at First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center, with Pastor Tim Deihl officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 2-5 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at First Congregational Church in Buffalo Center.

Betty Lou Elman was born on Aug. 17, 1927, in Dolliver. She was the eldest daughter of Fred and Grace (Dalton) Bussa. Her brother Alvin was born in 1931. Betty graduated from Armstrong High School in 1945. She received her two-year teaching degree from Iowa Teaching College (University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls in 1947. Betty taught for 32.5 years and retired in 1992. She was a substitute teacher, Title I teacher, and first- fifth-grade teacher.

Betty married Merlyn Raymond Elman on June 14, 1953. Their first child, Terry Raymond (1954) married Joyce Culbertson in 1977 and live in Buffalo Center. Their second child, Susan Lynn (1957) married Steve Risius in 1976 and live in Burnsville, Minn. Terry and Joyce have four children: Derrick (married to Amy) of Iowa Falls, Jason (married to Beth) of Cylinder, Kalli Jo (married to Nathan) of North Mankato, Minn., and Kristina (special friend Chad) of Rockwell City. Susan and Steve have two children: Sarah (married to Ryan) of St. Louis Park, Minn., and Shannon (fiancé Lucas) of Sauk Rapids, Minn. Betty was blessed with two great grandchildren: Payton and Noah (parents Derrick and Amy).

Betty was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. The family has many happy memories of their times together.

Betty felt it was a privilege to teach, and she was grateful to have worked with children and see them learn and mature. She enjoyed attending school activities and after retirement, she volunteered regularly at school, listening to children read. She taught Sunday school for many years and sang in the church choir at the First Congregational Church.

In February 2011, Betty had a stroke and received rehabilitation therapy in a care center in Apple Valley, Minn. She suffered two more strokes. Betty was moved to the Titonka Care Center on June 9 and passed away peacefully on June 23.
Betty was preceded in death by her husband, parents, brother, sister-in-law Alice Elman, and nephew Michael Elman.

Raymond "Ray" Eskildsen
U.S. Navy WWII

CLEAR LAKE - Raymond "Ray" Eskildsen, 85, died Thursday June 23, 2011 at the Heritage Care Center, Mason City.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday July 1, at the Christian Church, 302 Highway 18 W., Clear Lake, with Pastor Scott Wilson officiating.

The family will greet friends one hour before the service at the Church. Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake
V.F.W. Following the service, a luncheon will be provided at the Clear Lake, VFW. A private inurnment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, the following day.

Memorials may be sent to Raymond Eskildsen Memorial Fund 236 Seventh St. N.W., Mason City, IA.

Ray was born Feb. 15, 1926, in Kensett, the son of Aage George and Elizabeth Christine (Schott) Eskildsen. He attended rural school in Northwood, and then enlisted in the
United States Navy and served in the South Pacific.

Ray moved back to Northwood after the service, married Odella Hulshizer and farmed for several years. On Oct. 24, 1958, he married Aurelia "Wegie" Fent in Albert Lea, Minn. From 1958 until 1966, he worked for Pittsburg Glass. In 1966 he opened River City Glass which he owned in partnership and operated until he retired in 1988. Ray and his wife Wegie moved to Clear Lake in 1975. After retiring from River City Glass he worked part-time for Clear Lake Park and Recreation Dept for 15 years.

Ray enjoyed playing cribbage, wood working, golfing, fishing, spending time with his family and hanging out with his buddies at the Clear Lake V.F.W. He was a member of the Christian Church; Clear Lake Evening Lions, Clear Lake V.F.W. Canteen Committee, Life member of the Clear Lake V.F.W. and Clear Lake V.F.W. Honor Guard.

Left to cherish his memory are children: Larry (Su) Eskildsen, El Centro, Calif., Roger (Jennifer) Eskildsen, Mason City, David (Patti) Eskildsen, Bullhead City, Ariz., Jeff Eskildsen, South Bend, Ind., Reta (Darrell) Ulve, Kensett, Paula Gerdes (Jim Pinkham), Lake Geneva, Wis., and Jay (Connie) Bjorgo, Ripley, Okla.; seventeen grandchildren; Ryan, Brad, Brian, Jeremy, Chad, Dawn, Shannon, Shane, Jason, Matt, Todd, Teri, Brandy, Heather, Eric, Dawna, Brandi; twenty- five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Arlene Gore, Albert Lea, Minn., Betty Hendrickson, Northwood, and Shirley (Lehman) Floy, Phoenix, Ariz., many extended family members, friends and V.F.W. commrades of "The Round Table."

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Aurelia, son Steven Eskildsen and his wife Karen, four brothers Glen, Richard, Robert and Leo Eskildsen; two grandchildren Linda Ulve and Brent Eskildsen.

Sylvia Bernice Kuns

CLEAR LAKE - Sylvia Bernice Kuns, Clear Lake, died Friday June 24, 2011, at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Sylvia was born July 8, 1915, in Williams, the daughter of Ben and Julia (Peterson) Hall. She had five brothers and a sister. At the age of 16 she graduated from Forest City High School, where she was both class president and valedictorian. She received a one-year scholarship to Waldorf College. Sylvia met Paul Kuns at a Baptist Youth gathering and they married on June 21, 1934. After farming in Winnebago County for many years, they moved to a dairy farm near Albert Lea, Minn., with their five children and several foster children. After retirement they eventually settled in Clear Lake.
Here, they joined the Evangelical Free Church where they sang in the choir and taught Sunday school classes. Sylvia started a "Charm School" for young girls from the Sunday school, teaching social skills, including good manners and poise. Later, she served as the church secretary for several years.

GARNER - Sarah A. Peterson, 91, of Garner, died Monday, June 27, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Sarah Arla Peterson, the daughter of Albert and Etta (Towsley) Coe, was born June 2, 1920, at Mason City. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1939. On July 14, 1946, she was married to Jacob Legler by the Rev. C.A. Hinz at the parsonage of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City.

They lived in Mason City where they raised their three daughters, Dee Etta, Roseann and Arla. After Jake passed away on April 4, 1963, Sarah continued to live in Mason City. On Jan. 27, 1990, she was married to Clair Peterson at Okoboji. They made their home in Britt. Clair passed away in September of 2000. In December of 2001, Sarah moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner and in November of 2006, to Concord Care Center.

She enjoyed embroidery work and gave many hand-embroidered gifts to family and friends. She also enjoyed reading books and playing cards games at the Britt Community Center with her husband, Clair.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Garner and a former member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Sarah is survived by her three daughters, Dee Etta (Mike) Hollatz of Garner, Roseann (Mark) Boehnke of Garner and Arla (Steve) Juhl of Mason City; ten grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Marie Miller of Mason City and Mary Coe of Colorado; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Jacob and Clair; a son-in-law, Francis Murray; her parents; and three brothers, Lester Towsley and Donald and Arnold Coe.

MARSHALLTOWN -Luvern L. Baskerville, 88, a Marshalltown resident, entered into eternal life, Sunday, June 26, 2011, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgial Center in Marshalltown.

Luvern was born in Fonda, June 13, 1923, son of Lester and Clara Baskerville. He graduated from Fonda High School and attended Iowa State University. He was united in marriage to Beulah Krohn, Nov. 1, 1942, in Lytton. He farmed near Fonda until 1956, began custodial work at Lytton School, where he worked until 1964. He then became the building and grounds superintendent at Estherville Schools through 1966. He then moved to Marshalltown and was the building and grounds superintendent for Marshalltown Schools and Marshalltown Community College. Luvern retired in 1983 with 19 years of service there.

Luvern was an active member of Lutheran churches and Gideon's wherever he lived. Following retirement, he resided in Clear Lake and Mason City and spent 23 winters in Apache Junction, Ariz. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, lapidary, silversmithing and stained glass hobbies, music, singing in choirs and family genealogy.

Luvern is survived by his wife, Beulah, of 68 years, daughter, Marlene (Ken) Shadle of Mason City; son Lester (Ginny) Baskerville of Kellogg; daughter in law, Linda Baskerville of Mason City; sons Bruce (Pam) Baskerville of West Des Moines and James (Debra) Baskerville of Marshalltown as well as 14 grandchildren, two step- grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Luvern was preceded in death by parents, Lester and Clara Baskerville, brothers Don and Leroy, son Warren Baskerville, grandson Spenser Baskerville and in-laws Henry & Ethel Krohn.

HAMPTON - Henry H. "Howard" Ludens, 79, of Hampton, died Monday, June 27, 2011, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton from complications of congestive heart failure.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 1, at Zion Reformed Church, 2029B Jonquil Ave., Sheffield, with the Rev. Arthur Zewart officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 30, at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton and continue at the church one hour prior to the services.

Memorials may be directed to the Henry H. Ludens Memorial Fund, in care of the family, with distribution of funds at a later date to the Franklin General Hospital Foundation, the Hampton Senior Center, Dollars for Scholars (Henry H. Ludens Memorial Scholarship), and to help fund a new sound system at Zion Reformed Church.

Henry was born Sept. 28, 1931, in Springfield, S.D., the son of Henry and Annie (Palsma) Ludens. The family later moved to a farm near Lime Springs. He graduated from the Lime Springs High School and from Hamilton Business College in Mason City. He is a veteran of the
United States Air Force, having served his country during the Korean War, and is a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Urbatch on Sept. 5, 1958, at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Kensett. To this union two children were born, sons Steven and Brent.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife Shirley of 52 years, son Steven (Lynne) and their children Jonathan and Elissa (Ellie) of Ballwin, Mo.; Drs. Brent Ludens and Rene Dutkowski Ludens and their children Meredith and Samuel of Waterloo; twin sister Helena of Orange City; sisters-in-law Marjorie Odden (Bruce) of Northwood, Sharon Dilling (Leland) of Albert Lea, Minn., Marilyn Cooper of Kensett, Barbara Walser (Dennis) of Northwood; brothers-in-law Richard Urbatch (Evelyn) of Omaha, Neb.; Roger Urbatch (Wendy) of Woodbridge, Va.; Eugene Van Wyk of Orange City, along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lillian Rose Tolzman

NORA SPRINGS -Lillian Rose Tolzman, 88, formerly of Havana, Ark., died Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at the Nora Springs Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Upon Lillian's wishes she was cremated and a graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, July 2, in the Rock Grove Cemetery, Nora Springs, with Pastor Mark Lavrenz of Bethlehem Lutheran Church officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the Lillian R. Tolzman memorial fund in care of the family.

Lillian was born on Aug. 12, 1922, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Joseph and Sophie Young. She attended and graduated from high school in New York City. She was united in marriage to LaVern Tolzman in Charles City. They made their home in Mason City for about 31 years. They purchased an acreage on Highway 65 South and ran a small country café, where Lillian, along with her sister in-law, cooked and baked all homemade food. In 1962, Lillian and Vern purchased the Claybanks farm near Nora Springs. Lillian enjoyed helping with raising the animals, gardening, flowers, and they were members of the saddle club and enjoyed riding horses on the trails. Lillian was an excellent cook and loved to bake. She also did ceramics for many years and the past 15 years, enjoyed taking painting lessons and did many beautiful landscape pictures. After Vern's tractor accident, they bought a motor home and traveled for many years. During a stay in North Dakota, they worked for the Corps of Engineers collecting gate admission, and in the off season they continued to travel. While traveling Arkansas, they camped at the Waveland Campgrounds and ended up collecting gate admission for two years. Vern found three acres of bare ground that they purchased and put up a home. It is there they resided for about 24 years, until LaVern's death. Lillian then moved back to Nora Springs. She was a past member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and attended the Morris Chapel in Havana, Ark.

BRITT - August "Buddy" Brunsen Jr., 83, of Bloomington, Minn., formerly of Britt, passed away Wednesday, June 22, 2011, at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minn., surrounded by his loving family.

A memorial Mass for August "Buddy" Brunsen Jr. will be held on Friday, July 1, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Britt with Reverend Dennis Miller officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Britt.

Buddy was born on July 23, 1927, to August and Hannah (Bruns) Brunsen in Woden. He received his schooling in Woden. Buddy was a "country boy" and a farmer all his life even though he had lived 45 years in Bloomington, Minn. He farmed the home place with his father; Buddy left for the military/Army between 1950-1952 and served in Korea. He returned to farming until the farm was sold in 1966.

He enjoyed cards, sports, fishing, hunting and ballgames, especially Twins and Vikings games. He was very devoted to his children and grandchildren and enjoyed being with them.

Buddy is survived by his loving wife of 55-plus years, Mary Ann; three children: daughter Deborah (David) Steffl and sons Dean and Duane (Molly); six grandchildren, Joshua and Racheal Steffl, Derek and Andrew Brunsen, and Aryn and Hannah Brunsen; two sisters, Anna Kindl and Birdie Leerar; sister-in-law, Rose (Henry) Brunsen; brother-in-law, Marvin (Betty) Sherman; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, John, Herbert, Fritz, Henry, Burdella and Betty.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Diane Lee Danehy, born Nov. 18, 1946, in Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, Calif.

Diane was pre-deceased by her parents, Leo F. Danehy and Teresa M. Danehy (nee Di Marco) and an infant sister.

Diane is survived by sisters Patricia Porter (Federal Way, Wash.), Mary Anne Danehy (Canyon Country, Calif.), Justine Pina (Hanson, Mass.), Janine Parker (Santa Monica, Calif.) and Julie Jones (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.), and brother, Thomas Danehy (Tucson, Ariz.).

She was devoted to her many nieces and nephews and will be greatly missed by Matthew, Andrew, Philip, Alexander, Darlene, Dennis, Donald, Deloriann, Shelayna, Taylor, Ashton, Nicholas, Dillon and their spouses and children.

Diane was a brilliant mathematician, an avid reader, a talented seamstress and in her youth she was a national level competitive softball player. She was a private person with little patience for people who acted without thinking. With Diane you always knew where you stood.

She will be remembered for her generosity and devotion to her family and friends, for her quick, sometimes ascerbic wit and for her love of the beautiful things of life - family, friends, good books, lovely arts and crafts, good food and a good laugh.

Bonnie enjoyed bowling, reading, dancing, doing crossword puzzles, collecting swans, playing cards and Scrabble. She especially enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren and the family get-togethers on the Fourth of July. She loved her cat, Shadow. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church.

Visitation will be from 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage; a scripture wake service will be at 7:30 p.m.

Following services, cremation will take place with inurnment at a later date at the Osage Cemetery.

Dawn was born March 22, 1947, in Osage, the daughter of Daniel and Gloria (Creedy) Gilles. She attended schools in Adams, Minn. On Oct. 3, 1964, she married Richard Greeley, at Sacred Heart Church at Adams. Dawn was a member of Sacred Heart Church and Sacred Heart Guild in Osage. She enjoyed crafts, sewing, crocheting, stamping, and camping.

Dawn is survived by her husband, Richard Greeley of Osage; her daughter, Darcy (Mike) Betts of Osage, and children Tina Betts and Nicole Betts; her daughter, Ann (Alan) Hoisington of Osage, and children Jessica (Troy) Wickham and Julie Hoisington; her daughter, Jane (Wayne) Johnson of Dexter, Minn., and children Jeremy Johnson, Jamie Johnson and Jason (Katie) Johnson; three great-grandchildren, Drew Shimek, Aden Wickham, and Tait Johnson; her mother, Gloria Gilles of Adams, Minn.; six brothers, Colin (Connie) Gilles of Stewartville, Minn., Charles (Linda) Gilles of Adams, Minn., Clair Gilles of Austin, Minn., Dennis Gilles of Adams, Minn., Bob (Dawn) Gilles of Rose Creek, Minn., Brian (Chandra) Gilles of Adams, Minn., and one sister, Karen (Scott) Longueville of Austin, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Gilles; her great-grandson, Jayden Wickham; and a niece, Jody Gilles.

Charles "Chuck" Hokenstad

SIOUX CITY - Charles "Chuck" Hokenstad, 59, died Monday, June 27, 2011, at his Sioux City home.

Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, June 30, at Split Rock Lutheran Church, rural Brandon, S.D., with burial at the church cemetery. Visitation with the family present will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church. George Boom Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Chuck was born April 13, 1952, to Mervin and Dorothy (Nelson) Hokenstad of rural Garretson, S.D. He loved the family "Century" farm on which he was raised.
Chuck graduated from Brandon-Valley High School where he was very active in music activities. He played the baritone. Chuck was also a team manager. He received his B.A. from Augustana College, Sioux Falls, S.D. He also received his Masters Degree from Augie. Chuck taught special education in the Sioux City, Iowa, School System for many years.

Chuck was a baptized, confirmed and active life-long member of Split Rock Lutheran Church near Brandon, S.D. He was also a member of the Fellows of Augustana College.

Chuck was the consummate "card sender" and enjoyed gardening, trivia and collecting "Wizard of Oz" items as well as other collections. He was also an avid sports fan and faithfully followed his favorites - the Celtics, the Vikings and the Twins. The family lake cabin was one of Chuck's favorite destinations for many years.

Grateful for having shared his life are three siblings, Gary Hokenstad, Brandon, Cynthia (Rich) Tompkins, Mason City, and Candy (Rick) Ruckdashel, Apple Valley, Minn.; several nieces and nephews, Anne Marie (Arvid Nielsen) Hokenstad, Mike (Lisa) Hokenstad, Susie Dorris, Todd (Krista) Feustel, Troy (Jessica) Feustel, Jon Feustel, Jeff (Courtney) Ruckdashel, Ryan Ruckdashel, Angie (Keith) Hauswirth, Elizabeth (Kyle) Tetmeyer and Van (Stacy) Tompkins; and great-nephews and great-nieces, Lexie and Nick Hokenstad, Libby Dorris, Megan, Drew and MacKenna Feustel, Trayl Feustel, Kyle, Andy and Kara Hauswirth, Liesel and Lukas Tetmeyer, and Sander and Levi Tompkins.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents, Mervin and Dorothy Hokenstad, and his grandparents, Rudolph and Minnie Hokenstad and Norman and Irene Nelson.

Evelyn Tweeten Elthon Juvet

FERTILE - Evelyn Tweeten Elthon Juvet, 80, formerly of Fertile, died Friday, June 10, 2011, at Freedom Plaza Care Center in Peoria, Ariz.

Visitation was held from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 16, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N Clark St. in Forest City. Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 17, at Brush Point Cemetery in rural Hanlontown, Iowa.

A "Celebration of Life" will be held for Evelyn at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 2, at Fertile Lutheran Church with Lay Pastor David Halverson officiating. A luncheon will be held in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service on July 2.

Evelyn was born on May 11, 1931, in Forest City. She grew up on a farm three and a half miles west of Fertile. After graduation from Fertile High School, Evelyn earned a degree from Hamilton Business College in Mason City. Four children were born to her union with husband David Lee Elthon.

In Phoenix, Evelyn was employed at
Arizona State University for a number of years where she met and married Richard S. Juvet.

Evelyn is survived by her sister, Mary; four children, Ray (Susan) Elthon of Iowa City; Donald (Brenda) Elthon of Falls Church, Va.; Thomas Elthon of Lincoln, Neb.; and Barbara (Jan) Weigt of Phoenix, Ariz.: three grandchildren, Jessica MacNeil, Martin Elthon and Synneva Elthon; and a great-granddaughter, Alana.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Ruth Tweeten, and her husbands.

MASON CITY - Lois Mae Smith, 70, of 327 23rd St. S.W., died Monday, June 27, 2011, at her home.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday, July 1, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Kenneth B. Gehling officiating. Inurnment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph's Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held Friday one hour prior to the service at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Lois Mae Meyer was born Nov. 29, 1940, in Mason City, the daughter of Richard and Dorothy (Van Horn) Meyer. She attended Mason City Schools. Lois was married and was blessed with six children. She worked at the Clear Lake Bakery and later worked in local hotels in housekeeping.

Lois enjoyed spending time with her family, vegetable gardening, canning, cooking, baking, decorating her yard, playing bingo, garage and rummage sales, attending the Community Kitchen and loved spending time at East Park. She also enjoyed spending time with her sister, Jane.

Lois is survived by her children, Robin Smith, Nampa, Idaho; Ronda (Bill) Enderson, Northwood; Rodney Smith, Boise, Idaho; Rolinda Smith, Clear Lake; and Rob Smith, Mason City; 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; three sisters and one brother; along with several nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Lois is preceded in death by her parents, son Roy Smith and one brother.
