Grace Kuhlers

BELMOND - Grace Kuhlers, 101, of Belmond, formerly of Meservey, passed away at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond on Tuesday, June 14, 2011.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jun 18, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Reformed Church, Meservey. The Rev. Rodney Meester will be officiating. Burial will be in the Meservey Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Friday, June 17, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st St.S.E., Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services at church Saturday.
The family suggests those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in Grace's name consider the First Reformed Church of Meservey, Belmond Medical Center, or to the donor's choice.

Grace Suntken was born on Feb. 3, 1910, the daughter of Henry and Hannah (Frye) Suntken. The family lived on a farm by Alexander and she had two brothers, Bert and Onno Suntken, and one sister, Alida. Grace attended Wisner Township rural school. On Feb. 21, 1933, she married Ed Kuhlers at the First Reformed Church in Meservey and was a lifelong member there. To this union three children were born: Edward G. (Bud), Marlyn and Elaine.

Ed and Grace began farming east of Klemme and in 1940 they moved to northwest of Meservey and farmed there until retirement in June of 1973 when they moved to a home in Belmond. They were residing there when Ed passed away on Nov. 21, 1994. They had been married for 61 years.

Grace was involved in the farming operations including helping in the fields and taking care of the animals, especially milking of the cows, farrowing pigs and gathering eggs from a large poultry setup. She enjoyed her gardens and did a lot of canning, baking and cooking. She was a good cook and always made a lot of bread, cakes, cookies and apple pies and shared them with her family and friends.

Grace was active in the First Reformed Church of Meservey. She joined RCWM in 1937, taught Sunday school, catechism, and loved to read her Bible. She also still found time to crochet many things and made many doilies and afghans for her family. Each child, grandchild, and great grandchild received an afghan until eyesight grew too dim to see.

She moved to the Belmond Community Apartments in August 2000, as her eyesight gradually grew worse. Her son Edward "Bud" and his wife, Donna, moved into her home in Belmond and looked after her to help her stay in her apartments, until May 2009 when she moved to the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. She always enjoyed visitors and loved to share a cup of tea and talk about the good old days.

She is survived by one son, Edward "Bud" Kuhlers and wife, Donna, of Belmond; former daughter-in-law, Pat Formanek of Clear Lake; former sons-in-law, Marvin Woodfill of Prescott Valley, Ariz.; and eight grandchildren: Darla White and husband, Pat, of Meservey, Krista Pals and husband, Dighton, of Belmond, Kent Kuhlers and wife, Kim, of Meservey, Kari Mennenga and husband, Mike, of Meservey, Melinda Beseler and husband, David, of Medical Lake, Wash., and Mark Woodfill and wife, Joy, of Prescott Valley, Ariz., Lisa Clason and husband Dan, of Grimes and Kalin Kuhler, of Meservey. Also 16 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren, plus nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ed Kuhlers; two brothers and a sister; son Marlyn and daughter, Elaine; great granddaughter Brianne Pals; and a special niece Phyllis Fischer.

The family expresses loving appreciation to all who remembered Grace in all those years. The Lord blessed her with a long life and now her eyes behold the glory of her faith in heaven and we will miss her. She truly was an Amazing Grace.

Shirley attended St. Paul Community Schools and graduated from Washington High School, St. Paul, Minn.

Shirley was united in marriage to Richard W. Fleming on August 6, 1949, and to this union three children were born, LuAnn, Christine and Michael. She had lived for a time in Iron Mountain, Michigan, St. Paul, Minn., Denver, Colo., and several other Western states. Shirley was employed in the banking profession in various roles including teller and clerk, also a bookkeeper in several different companies.

Shirley was known by many as an excellent seamstress who lovingly handcrafted many beautiful wedding dresses and other clothing for her family. Her attention to detail and mind for design created many beautiful works. Truly the primary focus of Shirley's life was the needs and wants of her family. She would always put their needs before those of her own regardless of how big or small the need might be. Her role as a loving and nurturing mother was the most important devotion in her life.

Shirley enjoyed traveling. Her children and their families reflect fondly on various trips to California and other Western states. Many of these adventures included camping in the family's fold-down tent on wheels towed behind the pink and black Rambler station wagon.

Shirley was an avid reader and enjoyed music. She had a meticulously organized library of books and musical collections. She enjoyed animals and was especially fond of her cats and dogs throughout her life. She enjoyed visiting with others, shopping excursions and anything that included times spent with her family. During her years in St. Paul she was an active member of St. Mathews Lutheran Church in St. Paul and St. Stephen's Lutheran Church in White Bear Lake, Minn.

She retired and moved to Belmond several years ago and was married to Garfield "Gus" Halverson, on August 26, 2000, at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church in rural Belmond.
During their time together Shirley and Gus enjoyed traveling, dining out, and spending time in the company of one another. The couple made their home on a farm in rural Kanawha before moving to Belmond in 2007. Gus preceded Shirley in death in January of 2009. Shirley continued to enjoy her time living in their Belmond home until recently spending time at the Rehabilitation Center following injuries from an accidental fall.

Shirley's legacy and life will continue to be carried on in the lives of her surviving children, LuAnn (Steve) Brunes, Belmond, Iowa, Christine (John) Borquez, Thornton, Colo., Michael Fleming, Denver, Colo.; her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a great-great-grandchild and her nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Robert Eugene Jensen

SPENCER - Robert Eugene Jensen, 88, died Wednesday, June 1, 2011, at Riverview Terrace Assisted Living, St. Luke Lutheran Homes, Spencer.

A celebration of his life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 26, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Friends are asked to come and share memories with the family and each other. There will be no visitation as Bob's body was donated to the University of Iowa Medical School at his request.

Bob was born Dec. 21, 1922, in Clear Lake, one of five children of Jens P. Jensen and Marie Katrine Sorensen Jensen. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1941. Upon graduation, he went with construction crews from Clear Lake to Alaska to help with the building of the Alaskan Highway. He had many memories of this experience that he enjoyed sharing.

Bob married Jeanne L. Davis on June 20, 1946, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.
He furthered his education at University of Iowa becoming an X-ray technician and worked at Park Clinic/Memorial Hospital (later North Iowa Medical Center) for 38 years. During his career in radiology, he served twice as president of the Iowa Society of Radiologic Technologists: in 1952 and again in 1970. He was also active in the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and in 1974 was invited to present the Matthew J. Keilly Memorial Lecture.

Bob was an active and enthusiastic member of the Mason City Evening Lions Club beginning in 1975, initiating and coordinating many service and community projects, serving as president in 1980, and he was elected District Governor 1984. He received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award in 1990.

Bob also volunteered his time and efforts on behalf of Mason City's Mayor's Task Force on Drug Abuse, on the American Cancer Society Board of Directors, as a board or officer of the North Iowa Chapter of the Iowa Council for the Blind, and as a docent at the Meredith Wilson Music Square.

A "second home" for Bob was Trinity Lutheran Church of Mason City where he taught Sunday school, served terms on the Parish Education board and as a delegate to Waldorf College. He regularly attended and took leadership roles for the weekly Men's Breakfast and Bible Study group. He served on the board of the Northeast Iowa Synod Board of Men in Mission of the ELCA and was a member of the Bishop's Task Force. He also served on the Trustees comm. of the OK House, a former campus ministry for North Iowa Area Community College students. For many years he coordinated the Meals on Wheels service project for Trinity.

Besides volunteering for church and community, Bob most enjoyed his woodworking shop spending many hours remodeling the house at 1024 First St. S.W. and building beautiful furniture grade pieces.

Railroading was another strong interest as one of his close friends was George Cahalan who worked for the Milwaukee Railroad. He passed this interest on to his son Joel who is a successful published author and photographer of the rail. In his retirement years, Bob and Jeanne enjoyed wintering in sunny warm Ventura, Calif., making a new church family and many friends. For many years they pulled their pop-up camper and made friends with other "snowbirds" at a state campground. He enjoyed the trip out to the coast, traveling down two-lane roads. In later years their son Joel drove them out to a condo at Carpinteria, Calif., where, once again, they involved themselves a Lutheran church family/congregation.

For many years Bob enjoyed the game of golf always walking the course. He had stories to tell of his caddy days at the Clear Lake Golf Course. Bob had played football at Clear Lake High School and enjoyed watching sports on TV and keeping up with the Clear Lake Lions. After his wife's death in October 2009 and a bout with pneumonia in December 2009, Bob moved to Riverview Terrace in Spencer. Here, once again, he made many new friends and also continued his love of the two -lane road by exploring the county blacktops and small rural communities in Northwest Iowa.

The past two years he was an active part of his grand daughter's life attending many dance recitals, piano recitals, volleyball games, and family gatherings. He renewed his skill at making Danish Christmas goodies and visited Danebod at Tyler, Minn., and Tivoli Fest at Elkhorn. Porch-sitting at his daughter's family acreage and bird-watching rounded out his days.

Bob is survived by one daughter, JeanAnn Pixie Jensen and husband Craig Cadman of Sioux Rapids; one son Joel Jensen of Ely, Nev.; and one grand daughter Katrine S. Cadman.

He was preceded in death by his wife Jeanne L. (Davis) Jensen and a brother, Warren Jensen and sister, Doris McCann.

Memorials will be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City for the purpose of building an altar on wheels.
