John Edward Baumann

CEDAR RAPIDS - John Edward Baumann died on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, six days after his fifth birthday. John died at home of complications from congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) after spending four days in the hospital and six days at home under the care of hospice.

John's contagious giggle and dimpled grin spread joy everywhere he went. He taught people how to love. Although John was nonverbal, he knew what he wanted and was known for pursing his lips and kissing when he liked something. The two words John spoke clearly were, "all done," which he said when he wanted more and shouted when he wanted a change.

John rode the school bus to preschool at Monroe in Cedar Rapids, he was cared for by several loving respite workers, he attended Arc-sponsored events, and he was loved-up by everyone he met. John loved to listen to music at Mass. John listened intently and kissed for more anytime someone sang to him, especially his big sister, Anne. John's favorite songs include the "ABCs", "Twinkle Twinkle", "Bah-Bah Black Sheep", and "Bumble Bee". John delighted in rough-housing and having his brother, Will, crawl on him.

John will now serve as an angel for his parents, Matt and Teresa Baumann; his seven-year-old sister, Anne; and his one-year-old brother, Will. He will also watch over his grandparents, Rich and Donna Baumann (Carroll) and Duane and Roberta Schlichting (Clear Lake). John was deeply loved by aunts and uncles: Mark Baumann and Leah Shafer (Trumansburg, N.Y.), Tara Schlichting (Mason City), Shonna and Chris Smith (Carroll), and Casey and Teresa Schlichting (Mason City). He has four cousins to watch over: Jay Baumann and Kelly Smith (Carroll), and Jack and Josie Schlichting (Mason City). He is survived by seven great-grandparents and was preceded in death by two great-grandpas.

In lieu of flowers, John's family will accept memorial gifts to support any one of three organizations that were important in John's life: The Arc of East Central Iowa,
University of Iowa Children's Hospital, or the CMV Research Fund, Baylor College of Medicine.

Visitation will be today, Tuesday, Jan. 25, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church from 4 until 7 p.m. where a vigil service will be begin at 4 p.m. Funeral Mass: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 26, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church by the Rev. Neil Manternach. Inurnment: Private.

Norman Jasen Osslund
U.S. Navy WWII

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - Norman Jasen Osslund, 94, of Thousand Oaks, Calif., died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011.

Norman was born in Mason City, Iowa, the youngest child of John and Dena (Pederson) Osslund. He was baptized into the Christian faith as an infant and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Mason City, as a young adult. He joined the Navy after graduation from Mason City High School and served four years as a corpsman on the sub tender, the USS Holland. He remembered his years in the Navy with affection throughout his life. After leaving the Navy, he intended to become a dentist and to rejoin the Navy. He majored in predental sciences at Long Beach State College.

During this time he met Audrey Alene Hauser at a Lutheran student activity. Audrey was studying nursing. They were married on April 5, 1944. Norman and Audrey are the parents of five children and grandparents of ten granddaughters. They lived in the San Fernando Valley until 1964 when they moved to Thousand Oaks. Norman worked at Lockheed Aircraft in Burbank for 39 years and was proud of his association with Kelly Johnson and especially his work on the SR-71, still the fastest aircraft ever built. It was his strong desire to return to the Navy in
World War II, but Lockheed required that he remain employed in building aircraft for the national defense. He assisted in the construction of the famous P-38 used in the Pacific theater of the war. He is being buried with models of the P-38 and SR-71 on his coat lapel.

In their retirement Norman and Audrey enjoyed traveling throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and the Middle East. They remembered their days traveling in the motor home as some of the most special times shared together.

Norman was a member of the Lutheran Church throughout his life joining Lutheran congregations in Mason City, Hollywood, Reseda, Sepulveda, and Thousand Oaks. In his later years he enjoyed talking about his faith and his confidence in his salvation by grace, through faith, for the sake of Christ, alone. He has requested that the following be placed on his grave marker:
"Almighty God my maker, Jesus my Savior. Amen"

Norman was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Leland and Marvin, his sisters Leona Penney and Bertha Duggan.

He is survived by his wife, Audrey, his children Richard (and Anne), Larry (and Evette), John (and Lisa), Timothy (and Lynn), and Denajean (and Bradley Voigt), his grandchildren Bethany, Shannon, Christina, Erica, Leah, Elana, Elyse, Heather, Camille and Andrea, and his great grandchildren Aaron, Joshua, Garrett, Ian, Dylan, Kaitlyn, Maegan, Angelica, Raelynn and Wyatt. He often commented on his gratitude that his children and grandchildren were blessed with all that they needed for full and happy lives.

Visitation will be from 12 until 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 30, in the historic Chapel of the Islands, located at the entrance to Conejo Mountain Memorial Park in Camarillo. A service of remembrance will begin at 1:30 p.m. Burial including
U.S. Navy military honors, will follow in the park.
