Chuck was born Feb. 8, 1928, to Hattie (Anderson) Swift and Erdix
Marlowe Swift of Mason City, the youngest of five children. He attended
Mason City schools and graduated from MCHS in 1946. Chuck then enlisted
in the U.S.
Army
and was stationed in Korea until his discharge. He returned to Mason
City where he wed his high school sweetheart, Joyce Bisbee, on Feb. 20,
1948.
He graduated from Drake College, Des Moines, in 1951. Chuck and Joyce
returned to Mason City, bought their first house and Chuck went to work
at Marshall & Swift Inc.
Chuck's dad, Erdix Swift, and his partner, Arleigh Marshall, the
original owner/operators of the company, both died in 1950, leaving
their sons, Chuck and Don Marshall to run the company. Over the next two
decades, Chuck and Don expanded the plant and changed its focus from
solely a laundry and dry cleaning plant to a linen and uniform textile
rental supply company. Today the company serves an area 100 miles in
diameter from Mason City.
Chuck will be remembered for his integrity in his business dealings and
his concern for Marshall & Swift employees and their families.
In his earlier years, Chuck was an avid duck hunter. (At least one
family member thought twice a week was way too often to eat duck for
supper.) He generously shared his love for the outdoors with his family
and friends. Chuck was active in Boy Scouts, first as a Scout himself,
and later as a troop leader. His enthusiasm and generous spirit along
with his ability to make fun happen earned him lasting respect from his
Scouts. Later, he served on the Cerro Gordo County Conservation Board.
He enjoyed skiing in the winter and sailing in the summer. Weekend ski
trips with his family and friends to Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan
provided fun and lasting memories.
Chuck and Joyce were long-time members of the Clear Lake Yacht Club,
where Chuck raced in the Y-Class. He often took his family and whatever
assorted friends were around on night sails, best remembered for the
singing (in multiple-part harmony, of course!).
Joyce and Chuck were lucky to have taken wonderful vacations together.
The most memorable was a month-long sail in 1960. Along with two close
friends, they chartered a boat and sailed the West Indies' Windward and
Leeward islands. It was a once in a lifetime experience as most of the
islands had not yet been developed as tourist destinations.
Chuck and Joyce moved out to the country in 1968. They loved everything
about their new surroundings and together they developed an avid
interest in birding and a lifelong concern for wildlife and
conservation. Joyce and Chuck shared 62 years together prior to her
death on Nov. 16, 2010. Chuck cherished his wife and was steadfast in
his devotion. He was a loving and supportive father and grandfather and
a loyal friend. His genuine affection and welcoming hugs endeared him to
family and friends.
He is survived by a son, Steve Swift and his wife, Sheila of Clear Lake;
daughter, Alison Konefes of Mason City; granddaughter, Jennie Hoglund
and her husband, Grant, and great-grandchildren Evan and Norah Joyce of
St. Paul, Minn., grandson Chuck Konefes of Lincoln Park, Ill., grandson
Steve Konefes and his fiance, Erin Wessells, of Rodgers Park, Ill.; son
Alan Swift and his wife, Debbie, of Hayden, Idaho, granddaughter Margo
Crabb and great-grandchildren Paige and Ben Crabb of Coeur d'Alene,
Idaho, granddaughter Melissa DeVisser and her husband, Jerre, and
great-grandchildren Tyler Sheahan and Lilly DeVisser of Pell City, Ala.;
sisters-in-law Janice Litteneker of Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Hetsy Bisbee
of Stonington, Conn., and many nieces and nephews.
Chuck was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce; his parents; his
sisters, Dorothy Farrer and Jean Keohen; his brothers, W. Carroll Swift
and Erdix Swift Jr.; and brothers-in-law Jean Bisbee and Paul Litteneker.

Scoutmaster for some time thereafter. Harold enjoyed anything that
involved the outdoors, from hunting and trapping, fishing trips to
Canada, to raising mink and fox.
Harold loved woodworking and eventually made a career out of his hobby.
For almost 10 years Harold and Phyllis traveled the country selling
their crafts with the Country Folk Art Craft Show company under the
business name of Dodie Dumpling Crafts. After a house fire in 1998 that
put an end to the road travel, he became manager of operations at Hy-Vee
East in Mason City.
Harold had always had dreams of owning and operating a breakfast cafe,
and in November of 2001 that dream finally became a reality. Harold's
pride and biggest accomplishment, named and themed after his love for
his daughters (L & D), and his love of classic cars and hot rods, LD's
Filling Station Bar & Grill was born. Together with his wife, Phyllis,
Harold (now known as Mr. LD and Mrs. LD), managed to mold a small little
breakfast spot into a locally loved restaurant.
Harold saw life as a challenge worth conquering and met every day with a
positive outlook.
Harold is survived by his wife of 42 years, Phyllis, of Rock Falls;
children, Lori (Jerry) Schade of Mason City, Danielle Edgar and
significant other Matt Pace of Rock Falls; grandchildren, Brandyn Schade
of Clear Lake, Lindsey Schade and friend Jacob Guerrero of San Angelo,
Texas, and Shelbey Schade of Mason City; sisters, Bonnie (Bruce)
Jennings of Longmont, Colo., Jackie (David) Person of Edina, Minn.; and
brother Michael (Robin) Edgar of Mason City. He is also survived by many
nieces and nephews, close friends and relatives, and his loyal family of
staff and customers at LD's Filling Station.
He was preceded in death by his parents; paternal grandparents, William
(Ethel) Edgar; maternal grandparents, Vern (Hazel) Steil.

William H. "Bill" Moore
U.S. Army WWII
MASON
CITY -William H. "Bill" Moore, 97, of Mason City, died Wednesday, Jan.
5, 2011, at the Good Shepherd Health Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at
Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Jim
Magelssen officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Military rites will be provided by the Mason City Veterans Memorial
Association.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Major Erickson Funeral
Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and continue one hour before services
Wednesday at the church. Memorials will be used to establish a
scholarship fund.
Bill was born on Sept. 15, 1913, in Bloomington, Ill., the son of
William H. and Ida (Dambold) Moore. Bill always loved playing sports. In
his youth he participated in track, basketball and football.
Prior to high school, he played basketball in a church league. One of
the rules of the league was that you had to attend the church that
sponsored the team you played on. So Bill attended a couple of different
churches at the same time in order to maximize his playing time.
Bill's interest in golf started in the sixth grade when he caddied to
make extra money. He worked at the golf course until he graduated from
college. His work at the Bloomington Maplewood Golf Course, which
eventually included running the pro shop, was one way he paid for his
college education.
In high school, Bill played basketball, one year, was on the track team,
half-mile and discus, but stood out as a starting guard and captain on
the football team. Bill graduated from Bloomington High School in 1932.
Bill attended Illinois Normal University, now known as Illinois State
University, in Normal, Ill. In college, Bill was on the golf team but
starred as a football player. He was a starting guard and in 1936 was
named captain of the team. At the end of the 1936 season, he was chosen
as the team MVP, was an all-conference pick and was selected to the
Little All-American team by both The AP and UPI.
Bill received his bachelor of education degree in 1937 and later
received his master's degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1940.
Bill taught math, history and physical education as well as coaching
football, basketball and track in Ridgefarm, Ill., for three years.
While in Ridgefarm, he met Carol Christensen, the music teacher there.
He came to Mason City in 1940 and taught math at Mason City High School
and was the track coach, assistant football coach and assisted with
wrestling at the junior college.
Bill married Carol on Aug. 16, 1941, in Racine, Wis.
As with many other young men of that era, Bill enlisted for military
service during
World War II.
He was a first lieutenant in the Army Air Force as a radio maintenance
officer.
Bill returned to Mason City in the fall of 1946 and resumed his position
as a math teacher and head track coach at the high school, and also was
named assistant football coach and basketball coach. Later, Bill gave up
the assistant football position at the high school to become head
football coach at Mason City Junior College. When the opportunity came
to become the head football coach at Mason City High School, Bill took
the position and resigned his post at the junior college.
As track coach for Mason City High School, he instituted the Mohawk
Relays, one relay race of which is now named in his honor. Bill was
successful as a track coach and his stature was recognized in 1963 when
he was named an honorary referee at the A.D. Dickinson State College of
Iowa Relays.
Bill also worked hard and enjoyed success as head football coach. His
Mohawk team was undefeated in 1966, a record which still stands. Bill
retired from coaching that same year. In all his years of coaching
football, none of his teams ever had a losing record.
Although retired as a coach, Bill stayed active in sports by officiating
high school football and basketball games and starting track and
swimming meets, including one year as a high school referee at the Drake
Relays. Bill retired from teaching in 1979.
Retirement did not mean inactivity for Bill. He played golf extensively,
including participating for several years in area seniors tournaments.
He fished a lot and enjoyed the annual trip to Canada to fish for
walleye. He made so many annual trips to Jan Lake that a bay, Moore's
Bay, was named for him.
Bill did not just spend his retirement in leisure activities. He was
deeply involved with the Hawkeye Harvest Food Back, volunteering from
1982 to 2007. He served both on the board and then as president for six
years. He was active in civic organizations throughout his life. He was
a charter member of the Evening Lions Club, a continuous member of the
American Legion for over 60 years, a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran
Church serving on the Board of Trustees, the Board of Social Ministry,
ushering, and teaching Sunday School.
Bill also enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family. He dearly
loved and was proud of his family and treasured time spent with them. He
was known to many simply as "Coach."
Among the honors Bill received are his induction into several Halls of
Fame: the Iowa Coaches Hall of Fame in 1968, the Iowa Track Coaches Hall
of Fame in 1972 and the Illinois State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1992.
Bill is survived by his daughter, Nancy Stephenson and husband Ron of
Kansas City, Mo.; son, David Moore and wife Lisa of Sitka, Alaska;
granddaughter, Amy (Stephenson) Hampton and husband Blake of Haltom
City, Texas; granddaughter, Rachel Stephenson of Arlington, Texas; and
numerous nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ida Moore; two
brothers, Richard and Delmar; sister, Dorothy Beyer; wife, Carol; and an
infant daughter, Sharon Carol.
