Betty J. Gudmonson

Lake Mills - Betty J. Gudmonson, age 83, of Lake Mills, died Saturday (Jan. 15, 2011) at the Lake Mills Care Center.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills with Pastor David E. Jordon officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Monday, Jan. 17, at Mittelstadt Funeral Home, 902 E. Main St. in Lake Mills, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

The family requests that memorials and donations be directed to the Winnebago County Food Bank in Betty Gudmonson's name.

Betty Jean (Loge) Gudmonson was born on Aug. 28, 1927, in Blue Earth, Minn., to parents Hans and Mildred (Shuttleworth) Loge. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Blue Earth, and was confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, Minn. Betty attended schools in Blue Earth and also Albert Lea.

On May 30, 1948, Betty was united in marriage with Vernon Gudmonson at First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea. The couple made their home in rural Scarville, where Vernon farmed and Betty loved being a farm wife. The couple sold Watkins products for a number of years, enjoying neighborhood picnics, going dancing, and attending the Iowa State Fair.

Betty was so proud of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. As the grandchildren were growing up, Betty and Vernon attended as many of their sporting and FFA activities as they could. In later years, the couple kept up to date on the happenings in Lake Mills through the window of their car on Main Street, or by what they heard at The Grand Café.

Betty was well known for her wonderful sugar cookies and doughnuts, both made from scratch. The couple would take their items to the local farmers market, as well as baked for people that called to place special orders. Honorary pallbearers will be everyone who enjoyed Betty's sugar cookies.

She will be missed by her family including her husband, Vernon; two sons, Duane (Judy) Gudmonson, and Dennis (Kris) Gudmonson, all of Lake Mills; four grandchildren, Cory (Jenny) Gudmonson of Nicollet, Minn., Lenise (Ryan) Kollasch of Algona, Sarah (Tyler) Roelfs of Iowa City, and Andy (Lindsey) Gudmonson of Lake Mills; and four great-grandchildren, Caden Kollasch, Austin Kollasch, London Roelfs, and Karson Gudmonson. Betty is also survived by three siblings, Ann (Lyle) Hanson of Albert Lea, Minn., Gene (Ila) Loge of Albert Lea, Minn., and Terry (Barb) Loge of El Paso, Texas; and by three sisters-in-law, Donna Loge of Albert Lea, Minn., Deloris Loge of Alexandria, Minn., and Pat Pederson of Albert Lea, Minn.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and four brothers, Mike Loge, Marion Loge, Bill Loge, and Andy Loge.

Albert Lickteig
U.S. Army WWII

WESLEY - A funeral Mass for Albert Lickteig will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley with Father Randy Schon officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Wesley, with military honors conducted by the Andrews American Legion Post No. 428.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with a scripture prayer service beginning at 7:30 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary.

Albert Henry Lickteig was born on Jan. 1, 1918, in rural Greeley, Kan., the oldest of seven children of Louis and Josephine (Rosner) Lickteig. He grew up in Buffalo Center and Wesley area graduating from Wesley High School in 1935. Al began working for K&H Co-op in 1938.

He was married to Rose Smith on Oct. 12, 1940, in Buffalo Center. They lived in Wesley where they raised their five children. Albert served in the United States Army during
World War II from 1944 until 1946.

Rose preceded him in death on Jan. 10, 1958.

He was united in marriage to Marie (Riesberg) Potthoff on June 20, 1959, in Halbur. They made their home in Wesley where he continued to work for K&H Co-op until retiring in 1982.

He enjoyed playing cards, golfing, traveling to visit his relatives and doing family genealogy. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wesley singing in the choir for 50 years. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Andrews American Legion Post No. 428 in Wesley, and after retirement he enjoyed volunteering for the Department of Human Services.

Albert and Marie moved to Van Buren Terrace in Algona in 2004 and at that time became members of St. Cecelia Catholic Church. In May of 2008, he became a resident of Good Samaritan Community. Albert died there on Friday, Jan. 14, 2011 at the age of 93.

He is survived by 10 children, Helen (Donald) Paulsen of Mason City, Ruth Lickteig of Mason City; Michael (Judith) Lickteig of Nora Springs, Catherine (William) Foster of Valrico, Fla., and Margaret Trieschmann of Valrico, Fla., Carlene O'Connor of Minneapolis, Minn., Delores (Gordon) Volkmeier of Minneapolis, Minn., Yvonne Klaver of Carroll, Donald (Jane) Potthoff of Algona, and Dennis (Deb) Potthoff of Blue Springs, Mo. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren; 60 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Marjorie Kenyon of Algona; two brothers, Robert (Mary) Lickteig of Mt. Vernon, Ill., and Thomas (Marilyn) Lickteig of Waukee; a sister-in-law, Joyce Lickteig of Algona; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Rose Lickteig; a son James Potthoff in 2001; his wife Marie Lickteig on Aug. 4, 2010; an infant great-granddaughter; two brothers, Edward and George Lickteig; a sister, Theresa Berger; and three sons-in-law, William O'Connor, Roger Klaver, and Vance Trieschman.

Frances Virginia (Schultz) Redfield

BELMOND - Frances Redfield, age 89, most recently a resident of the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond, died, Friday (Jan. 14, 2011) at the Rehabiltation Center.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E., Belmond. The Rev. James Harbaugh will be officiating. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Algona.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Monday, at the funeral home and continue one hour prior to the services on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Frances Virginia (Schultz) was born on Sept. 25, 1921, in Humboldt, to Arthur H. and M. Camilla (Laursen) Schultz. She grew up in the area until 1936 when the family moved to Estherville, where she graduated from high school.

On Sept. 7, 1942, she was united in marriage to Clark D. Redfield and they settled in Des Moines. Frances had several jobs and in 1958 started with the U.S. government.
In 1966 she and Clark moved to Kansas City and continued working for the government until she retired in 1985.

Frances enjoyed playing cards, cooking, sewing, watching the birds at her various feeders, and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by three children, Duwaine and wife Peggy of Belmond; Merlin of New Port Richey, Fla., and Suzanne of Leander, Texas; five grandchildren, Jason Redfield, Camille Usher, Jennifer Adkins, Megan Kuhlers, and Brie Redfield; 10 great-grandchildren, Ashton Redfield, Addie Marie Usher, Koty Kuhlers, Trevor Usher, Jackson Redfield, Triston Adkins, Chloe Hobscheidt, Aidan Adkins, Aiden Hobscheidt, and Addison Adkins.

Allen J. Eastvold

FOREST CITY - Allen J. Eastvold, 68, of Forest City, died Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011, at his home in rural Forest City.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 19, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Rod Hopp officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in rural Forest City.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and will continue an hour prior to service at the church.

Allen John Eastvold was born on July 27, 1942, in rural Wells, Minn., near Rice Lake, the son of Julius and Bessie (Durby) Eastvold. He graduated from Rake High School in 1960. Unbeknownst to his parents, Allen began taking flying lessons at the age of 15.

He furthered his education by attending Waldorf College in Forest City and went on to graduate from Mankato State University in Mankato, Minnesota, with a degree in business. He worked for a short time as an insurance agent.

On June 4, 1966, he was united in marriage to Patricia Ruth Russ at Zion Lutheran Church in Rake. The couple made their home in Minneapolis where Allen was a flight instructor. In 1968 Allen began working for Eastern Airlines, a career that would span 22 years and over 20,000 hours of flight time. The family lived in many different communities through these years, finally settling in Forest City in 1977. Allen continued working for Eastern Airlines until his retirement in 1990.

Allen then worked for the Winnebago County Sheriff's Department as a dispatcher and as a jailer. He later drove truck and did a little flying for Norseman Trucking in Lake Mills. Allen was a huge sprint car racing fan, attending the races in Knoxville, for almost 50 years. He enjoyed making the trip to see the Indianapolis 500, sharing the time with family and friends. He was a long-time country music fan but had recently developed a taste for Bluegrass music and had attended several festivals. An important part of Allen's social calendar was attending the Lutefisk dinners offered by area churches. Besides enjoying the food, it was a chance for him to renew acquaintances and visit with friends.

He is survived by his mother, Bessie Eastvold of Rake; three children: Tim Eastvold of Forest City and his children Julia and Michael and their mother, Melissa; Darla and Brad Evenson of Lake Mills and their children Scott, Drake, Amelia and Hannah; and Matt Eastvold of Forest City. Also surviving are three brothers: James Eastvold of Grimes; Paul (Karilyn) Eastvold of Springfield, Ill. and Darrell (Ginny) Eastvold of Mankato, Minn. and numerous nieces and nephews; sisters-in-law Lou Ann (Pete) Van Gerpen of Garner and Irene Russ of Minneapolis, Minn.

Allen was preceded in death by his father, his wife Patricia in 2006, a brother Merlin who died in infancy in 1944 and brother-in-law Ronald Russ.

Gary Godfredson

NORTH LAKE BROWNWOOD, Texas - Gary Godfredson, age 66, of North Lake Brownwood, died Friday evening (Jan. 14, 2011) in the Abilene Regional Medical Center.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Heartland Funeral Home Chapel with Brother David Pate of the First Baptist Church of May officiating. His body will be cremated and entombed at 4 p.m. on Tuesday in the Cedar Park Cemetery in Cedar Park, Texas.

He was born on May 5, 1944 in Lake Mills, Iowa, the son of the late Wilbur and Ruby Wood Godfredson. He grew up in Lake Mills and later graduated from the Mason City High School. He worked as a printer for many years in Fort Worth, Texas, and had lived at North Lake Brownwood since 1997. He had also worked as a groundskeeper and in maintenance work for a number of years.

He was loved dearly by his family and will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his son, Steve Godfredson and wife Eva of Dallas; his daughter, Julie Riding and husband Ronald of Cedar Park; three grandchildren, Joshua, David and Daniel Riding all of Cedar Park; and a brother, Darrell Godfredson of San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Rod Godfredson.

Carol J. Winston

MASON CITY - Carol J. Winston, 77, of Mason City, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Impatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 22, at the First Presbyterian Church, 100 S. Pierce Ave., with the Rev. Paul Collier officiating.

Per Carol's request, her body was cremated. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice in Carol's name.

Carol was born on Aug. 7, 1933, in Mason City, the daughter of Leslie and Betty (Koenig) Sundeen. She was raised in Waterloo, attended high school in Dubuque, and attended the University of Iowa. She was united in marriage to Harold (Hal) Winston on June 11, 1955, at the Danforth Chapel, Iowa City, before moving to Bergstrum Air Force Base in Austin, Texas, where her husband was stationed. Carol and Hal returned to Iowa City in 1957 for Hal to complete law school. In 1958, Hal and Carol moved to Mason City.

Carol devoted much of her time to volunteering in the community. She was an announcer for KCMR for 23 years, also serving as president of the KCMR board and was one of the originators of "KCMR LIVE". Carol was a church elder in the First Presbyterian Church and also taught Sunday school. She served on the Mercy Hospital Board, the Mercy Hospital Foundation Board, served as president of the Mercy Hospital Foundation Board and various other Mercy Hospital committees. Carol served on the YMCA board for many years and also served as its president. She was very active in the Mason City Community Theatre, serving on the board and co-directing the production of "Barefoot in the Park." Carol was a speech judge for Mason City High School and the surrounding area. Carol was active in the Girls Scouts and was a leader for several troops. She also worked with the Salvation Army in several capacities. Carol was very active in the origination of the first Iowa Independent Film Festival held at The Music Man Square in 2007. Carol touched many lives in the community and was honored, along with her husband Hal, as Grand Marshal of the 2004 North Iowa Band Festival parade.

Carol enjoyed entertaining her friends and family and being a part of many social clubs, including the Mason City Woman's Club, Study Club, and her beloved Bridge Club. She was a 50-plus year member of PEO Chapter GN and a past president. Carol enjoyed traveling with Hal throughout their life together and over the years visited many countries.

Carol is survived by her husband, Harold "Hal" Winston of Mason City; three daughters, Leslie (Bob) Yannetti of Woodland Hills, Calif.; Lisa (Bill) Shaw of Toluca Lake, Calif.; and Laura (Robert) Moritz of Austin, Texas; grandchildren, Allison and Joanna Yannetti and Jane Moritz; brother-in-law, Keith (Celia) Winston and their children, Janet Key, Scott Winston and Steven Winston.

Carol is preceded in death by her parents; step-mother, Leona Sundeen and brother, David Sundeen.

Pearl Eliason

WATERLOO - Pearl Eliason, 86, of Waterloo died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at Allen Memorial Hospital of pneumonia.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 until 7 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 20, at the Locke Funeral Home.
She was born on Dec. 24, 1924, in Forest City to Leonard and Edna Jacobson Klipping.
She married Robert Eliason on Nov. 14, 1942, in Bethany, Mo.; he died on July 20, 1996.

Survivors include daughters Jean (Loren) Necker, Sumner, Janet Eckenrod of Sumner, and Kathy (Rex) Kalvig of Ionia SonGary (Karen) Eliason of Waterloo, eight grandchildren, 17 grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Brother Marvin (Reta) Klipping of Britt and sisters Mary Church of Forrest City and Joanne (Melvin) Symes of Mason City.

Darlene Graven

MASON CITY - Darlene Graven, 56, of 106 S. Tennessee Ave., Mason City, died Tuesday, Jan. 18, 2011, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.

A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at Hogan Bremer Moore Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with Pastor Kathy Graves officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 20, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Darlene Graven Memorial Fund.

Darlene was born on March 3, 1954, in Dawson, Minn., to parents Glenn and Marlyce Miller. She was baptized and confirmed at Dawson Covenant Church. After graduating from Dawson-Boyd High School, she was united in marriage to Dean L. Graven. To this union three children were born, Kelli, Alissa and Shawn. After two years in Beatrice, Neb., they relocated to Mason City where they have resided for the last 30 years.

After working many years at JC Penney, she was employed at Marshall & Swift for the last eight years. She also enjoyed a part-time job at Kramer Ace Hardware until retiring due to health reasons.

Darlene had a huge heart and a wonderful sense of humor. She was an avid Elvis fan and enjoyed all music. Her other hobbies included reading, cards, sewing and crafts, and having a houseful of family and friends to share a cup of coffee with. She especially loved to spoil and spend time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Left to cherish her memory are her three children, Kelli (Ron) Pope, Alissa (Clint) Wendel and Shawn (Amy) Graven; a special niece, Jaylin (Scott) Anderson; a very special friend, Diane Lee; and four grandchildren, Chanse Creekmur, Hailee Wendel and Aubri and Zachary Graven. Darlene is also survived by three brothers, Danny (Kim) Miller, Duane (Michelle) Miller and Daren (Stephanie) Miller; three sisters Deb (Craig) Moe, DeAnn (Dan) Cahalan and Dori (Mike) Leslie; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Diane and several aunts and uncles.

Evelyn Lila Hazel Keel

FOREST CITY - Evelyn Lila Hazel Keel, 92, of Forest City died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at the United Methodist Church in Forest City with Pastor Jerry Swanberg officiating.

Evelyn Lila Hazel Keel was born on Sunday, Jan. 5, 1919, in Murdock, Minn., the second daughter of Lawrence and Maria (Hanson) Youngquist. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She was raised on a farm and her mother died when she was 12 years old. After graduating from Murdock High School in 1936, the family moved to St. Paul, Minn., where she worked for a few years.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Robert Keel on March 8, 1945, at the Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church in St. Paul, Minn. After WW II, they farmed the five generation Keel farm near Forest City. Evelyn became a member of the United Methodist Church in Forest City and was very active in the church and several community organizations.

Evie always grew a huge garden and worked long hours as a farmer's wife. She enjoyed her coffee groups and loved to read. She was very talented at her beloved handiwork; embroidering, crocheting and most of all making beautiful quilts. However, most precious to her were her six grandchildren.

Evie will always be remembered and loved by her husband of 65 years, Bob; her three children, Tom (Bev) of Reedsburg, Wis., Linda (Jim) Westensee of Lakefield, Minn., and Bill (Sarah) near Forest City; her grandchildren, April Jones, Jennifer (Mike) Cole, Nicky (Mark) Nel, Matt Keel, Kelli Keel and Tanner Keel; her great-grandchildren, Brandon, Ally and Shane; her sister-in-law Eva Olson; and her two nieces and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Pauline (Irvin) Hanson, and her parents.

Rita Kay Malcomson

NEWTON - Rita Kay Malcomson, 58, of Newton, formerly of Tama, passed away Sunday, Jan. 16, 2011 at her home under the care of Hospice of Central Iowa.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 22, at 1 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with Dave Gray officiating. Private committal services will be held.

Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 21 from 4 until 7 p.m. at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama.

Rita was born on Feb. 10, 1952, in Iowa City. She was the daughter of Rondal and Delight (Plowman) Callahan. Rita was united in marriage to Dan Malcomson on Feb. 14, 1995, in Rochester, Minn. Rita was a devoted wife and mother. She had also worked as an advocate in women's shelters. She was very creative and enjoyed decorating her home. She also enjoyed sharing her talents with others. Rita was an excellent cook. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her father, Rondal Callahan, as well as her grandparents.
Survivors include her husband Dan of Newton; children, Deanna (Doug) Hagele of Marshalltown, Brian Slaven of Newton, Andrea Malcomson of Rochester, Minn., and Adam DeVilder of Minneapolis, Minn.; her mother, Delight Callahan of Tama; granddaughters Brittani and Autumn Matson, grand-puppies Socks and Ruby; and siblings Deb (Jeff) Roberts of Tama, Tim (Patty) Callahan of Tama, Mike Callahan of Tama, Deanna Eakin of Springfield, Mo., Dolonna (Wendell) Taylor of Roswell, N.M., and Donita (Joe) Marling of Plano, Texas.
