Mary Lucille Eastman

RICEVILLE - Mary Lucille Eastman, 93, of Riceville, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at the Riceville Family Care & Therapy Center.

Funeral services will be held at the Riceville United Methodist Church in Riceville on Wednesday Aug. 24, at 10:30 a.m. with the Rev. Pam Kranzler officiating.

Burial will be in Wayne Cemetery in rural McIntire, Iowa.

Friends may call at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Riceville today during the hours of 4-7 p.m. and one hour before services at the church.

Mary Lucille Eastman was born Feb. 25, 1918, in Howard County near Riceville. Mary was the daughter of Peter and Edna Irene (Errington) Staley. She went to school in Bailey and McIntire and was a member of the Class of 1935 at McIntire. She was married to Clinton Kyle "Bus" Eastman on April 6, 1935, in New Hampton. They farmed and raised three children on the family farm north of McIntire. Mary worked at Sande's Locker in LeRoy, Minn., and the McIntire grocery store for many years. Bus and Mary moved to Riceville in 1991. Mary was a member of the McIntire Methodist Church. She decided in September 2010 that she was ready for the Care Center and lived there very comfortably until her death.

Mary is survived by her three children: Lucille Jensen, Keith (Mary) Eastman, and Leota Chase all of Riceville. She was "Grandma Bus" to 11 grandchildren, 24 great- grandchildren, and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are a sister, Gretta Fisher of Toledo; half-sisters: Peggy Doonanco of Clear Lake, Alberta, Priscilla (Lyle) Mayer of Medicine Head, Alberta, and Marlene Conway of Cold Lake, Alberta, and a half-brother John (Birdie) Staley of Whitehorse, the Yukon Territory; sister-in-laws: Esther Doane of Osage, Louis Edgeton of Pine River, Minn., Mildred Eastman of Osage, Shirley Bucknell of Adams, Minn., Sharon Eastman of Riceville, Lorraine Staley of Calgary, Alberta, and a brother-in-law Herbert Eastman of Mankato, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sons-in-law, Donald Jensen and Joel Chase and a sister, Kathryn Manwiller.

Elizabeth A. Gregory

MASON CITY -Elizabeth A. Gregory, 83, of 961 15th Place N.E. in Mason City, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St., in Mason City on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will be at Fullerton Funeral Home in Mason City, from 5-7 p.m. today. The visitation will continue one hour prior to Elizabeth's service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Grateful for having had the privilege of sharing in Elizabeth's life are her three daughters, Mary Ramey, Bonnie (Byron) Dodd and Debra (Maynard) Siewertsen; seven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; two sisters, Joanne (Bob) White and Harriet (Dick) Krutsinger, one brother, Don (Pat) Stangler. Elizabeth is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Oral Keith "Bud" Leraaen

St. Ansgar - Oral Keith (Bud) Leraaen, 82, of St. Ansgar, died on Thursday (Aug. 18, 2011) in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 24, at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Robert Porisch officiating. Burial will be in the First Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar.

Bud was born on May 12, 1929, in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, to Gustav and Sena (Knutsen) Leraaen. He was baptized on July 7, 1929, and confirmed on April 18, 1943, both at the First Lutheran Church, St. Ansgar. Bud married Beverly Jean Bachman on May 15, 1955. Bev died on May 13, 2001.

He married Barbara Rosenberg on Nov. 16, 2002.

Bud was a carpenter in the St. Ansgar area until moving to Boone in 1984. He then was a building inspector in Urbandale, Iowa, from 1984 to 1997 when he moved back to St. Ansgar.

Bud enjoyed fishing, especially his fish trips to Northern Minnesota and Canada with family and friends. He was an avid bowler, loved to do carpentry work and took special pride in spending time with his grand and great grandchildren and, of course, socializing with his friends. Bud was extremely proud of his 58 years as a Legionnaire (included time as Post Commander and Sergeant-at-Arms) and his 18 years with the Fire Department, where he spent seven years as fire chief. Bud was a total patriot and veteran, having served time in the Army, with most of that time in Korea.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents; first wife Beverly; son Steven; step-son Raymond Rosenberg, Jr.; step-daughter Debra Rosenberg White and brother-in-law Bruce Bachman.

Bud is survived by his wife Barbara; sons Scott (Denise) Leraaen and Eric (Lynn) Leraaen; daughter Nancy Johnson; stepsons Randy Rosenberg and Rick Rosenberg; stepdaughters Terri (Gary) Johnson, Karen (Charles) Kittleson, Sharon (Mark) Krebsbach, Rebecca (Rusty) Horak; one brother Galen (Janice) Leraaen; one sister Bonnie (Bill) Petznick; one sister-in-law Sue Ellen Young; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; 22 step-grandchildren; and 36 step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

Robert "Bob" Newman

MASON CITY - Robert "Bob" Newman, age 80, of Mason City, passed away Monday (Aug. 15, 2011) at the Baptist Health Care Center in Lenoir City, Tenn.

Family and friends will gather at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City for graveside services.

He is survived by his daughter, Jolayne K. Brif and husband, Craig of Loudon, Tenn.; son, Robert W. Newman Jr. and wife, Evon of Sudbury, Ohio; grandchildren, Jeremy Newman, Clint Brif and Derek Brif; sister, Mardel Conradson of Waverly; brother, George Newman of Mason City; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Hector J. Newman; mother, Clara K. Newman; and brother, Ralph Newman.

William Douglas (Doug) Pinkham
U.S. Army   Korean War

CLEAR LAKE - William Douglas (Doug) Pinkham, 83, Clear Lake, died after a short illness on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2011, at Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.
 
Doug was a resident at Apple Valley Assisted Living in Clear Lake.

A funeral service will be held 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 25, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, Iowa, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, and one hour preceding the service at Ward-Van Slyke.

Military honors will be provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Inurnment will be at a later date.
Memorials may be given to the William Douglas Pinkham Memorial Fund.


Doug was born Aug. 5, 1928, to Charles and Beula (Short) Pinkham. Doug grew up in Cedar Falls and was an accomplished athlete at the Iowa State Teachers College High School.

Doug was named to the IDPA second team and Des Moines Register third team All-State football teams as an end in 1945. Doug placed third in the 440-yard dash at the Iowa state track meet in 1945 and 1946 when the entire state competed in one class.

Doug graduated from Iowa State Teacher's college and was working his first teaching job in
Rowan when he was drafted to serve in the Army in Germany during the Korean War.

Doug coached high school football at Nashua from 1953 to 1960 where he was 46-14-3, including a 26-game winning streak, won four Corn Bowl Conference Championships and a "mythical" small school state championship.

Doug then worked for his father, Charlie, at Iowa Sports Supply until 1964 when he returned to coaching at West Marshall in State Center where he was 94-26-2 including a 25-game winning streak and six-conference titles. In 1970, Doug was named the IFCA and Des Moines Register's prep coach of the year.
 
Doug retired from coaching in 1978 to enter private business and sales. In 1983 Doug was inducted into the Iowa Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

Doug is survived by his brothers Tom (Xu Yinyu) Pinkham of Shanghai, China, and Neil (Evangaline) Pinkham of Boulder Colo., his sister Rachael (Jon) Sailer of Roanoke, Va., children David (Sheryl) Pinkham of Cottonwood Heights, Utah, Sue Schinke of Delano, Minn., and Kay Gowdy of Allen, Texas, grandchildren Jamie (Steven) Foust, James Schinke, Tara Schinke, and Katelyn Pinkham, great- grandchild Preston Foust, and first wife Barbara Pinkham of Clear Lake.

Doug was preceded in death by his parents, step- mother Sarah, sister Dolores Carlo, and second wife Jeanyce Hanson Forsyth Pinkham.

 Rev. Chester R. Ploeger

GARNER - The Rev. Chester R. Ploeger, 85, of Garner, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at the Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Peace Reformed Church south of Garner with the Rev. Harvey Opp officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m., today, Tuesday, Aug. 23, at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St., in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Peace Reformed Church in his name.
The Rev. Chester Raymond Ploeger, one of seven children of Fred and Amelia (Luelf) Ploeger, was born Sept. 1, 1925, at Schaller. He was baptized in Immanuel Reformed Church in Schaller on Sept. 13, 1925, by the Rev. Herman Greimann. Chester grew to manhood on his father's farm located seven miles northeast of Schaller. On May 28, 1939, he received the Rite of Confirmation by the Rev. Willard Sherman. He received his elementary education in the rural schools of Eden Township and graduated from Hayes Consolidated High School at Storm Lake in 1942. In 1946, he graduated from Mission House College in Plymouth, Wis., with a bachelor of arts degree and from the Mission House Theological Seminary with a bachelor of theology degree in 1949. He was examined and licensed by the Germania Classis Reformed Church in America at Lennox, S.D., on July 8, 1949, and ordained into the Holy Ministry by the Same Classis on July 27, 1949. On June 18, 1950, he married Miss Grace Grether in the Salem-Ebenezer Reformed Church in Manitowoc, Wis., by the Rev. K.J. Stuebbe.

Chester served the following pastorates: Logan Reformed Church in Dell Rapids, S.D., from 1949 to 1952, Peace Reformed Church in Garner from 1952 to 1965, Zion Reformed Church in Menno, S.D., from 1965 to 1970, Peace Reformed Church in Napoleon, Ohio, from 1970 to 1973, Salem-Ebenezer Reformed Church in Manitowoc, Wis., from 1973 to 1976, Grace Reformed Church in Bakersfield, Cailf., from 1976 to 1983, Peace Reformed Church in Loveland, Colo., from 1983 to 1985 and Eureka Reformed Church in Eureka, S.D., from 1985 to 1990.

In 1990, Chester retired from the ministry and moved with Grace back to Garner. Chester was elected to Pastor Emeritus by the Peace Reformed Church in Garner on July 15, 1990. From 1990 to 2000 he did substitute preaching in various Reformed churches in the area.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Ploeger (nee Grether) of Garner; a sister, Evelyn Currie of Storm Lake; a sister-in-law, Mardelle Ploeger of Sioux Center; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Ivan (Genevieve) Ploeger and Everett (Verna) Ploeger; fraternal twin brother, Lester Ploeger; two sisters, Opal (Lyle) Langner and Mildred (Bill) Demers; and a brother-in-law, Wilbur Currie.

Myron R. Wulff

CHARLES CITY - Myron R. Wulff, 75, of Charles City, died Saturday (Aug. 20, 2011) at Hospice of North Iowa Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services for Myron Wulff will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Hauser Funeral Home. Pastor Dennis Niezwaag of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church will officiate. Inurnment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Hauser Funeral Home in Charles City and an hour prior to the service on Wednesday.

Myron Russell Wulff was born Nov. 28, 1935, at Charles City, the son of Lawrence and Elsie (Melcher) Wulff. He graduated from Charles City High School in 1954. Myron proudly served in the United States Marines from 1956 to 1958.

On Feb. 4, 1961, he was united in marriage to Patsy Miller at Charles City. Myron farmed west of Charles City on the Wulff Century Farm all of his life and also for 12 years was employed at Triad Construction.

He was a member of Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Farm Bureau, and Floyd County Cattlemen's Association. Myron enjoyed going to animal judging and tractor pulls at various fairs. He also enjoyed watching the Iowa Hawkeyes, Boston Celtics, Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians and listening to country music. Myron was an avid Charles City sports fan and Booster Club member.

Living family members include two sons, Tod (Tammy) Wulff of Rockford and Toby Wulff of Charles City; three grandchildren, Dylan Wulff, Jason Waddell and Britany Bell; a brother, Leland (Marilyn) Wulff of Charles City; a sister, Joyce (Jim) Shover of Hopkinton; two brothers-in-law, Wayne (Juanita) Miller of Charles City and Bill (Audrey) Miller of Champlin, Minn.; and two sisters-in-law, Marlene (Bob) Hockinson of Cape Coral, Fla., and Viola Wulff of Charles City.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife in 2002; a daughter, Teri Wulff in 1996; and a brother, Ron Wulff.

Norman Christiansen

OSAGE - Norman C. Christiansen, 93, of Osage, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Cremation has taken place.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Osage with the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Inurnment will be at the Osage Cemetery with military honors at the grave by the U.S. Marine Corps, Osage American Legion Post 278 and Osage V.F.W. Post 7920.

Margaret Barbara Everding

TITONKA - Margaret Barbara Everding, 87, died on Sunday morning, Aug. 21, 2011, at the Hancock County Hospital in Britt.

Services will be held at Ramsey Reformed Church, in rural Titonka, at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 24.

The Rev. Dr. Perry DeGroot will officiate.

Interment will be at Ramsey Reformed Church Cemetery, rural Titonka.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to funeral at church.

Margaret Barbara Everding was born on Feb. 7, 1924, in rural Titonka, to Menno and Anna (Kruse) Everding. She attended country school German Township No. 5. She was a member of Ramsey Reformed Church through confession of faith and confirmation. She was a longtime employee of the Titonka Care Center and other jobs. Nieces and nephews always enjoyed the chocolate chip cookies that Ruth baked.

Survivors include her sisters Katherine and Clara and brother William and wife Shirley, all of Titonka as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Daniel and sister Ruth.

Donald Robert "Bob" Davis Jr.
U.S. Air Force (1947-1968)

GRAYSON, Ga. -Donald Robert "Bob" Davis Jr., 80, of Grayson, Ga., formally of Texarkana, Ark., died at home Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, from a lengthy illness.

Born in Mason City, Iowa, he was the son of Donald R. Davis and Marian Alyce (Alice) Jones Davis.

He proudly served in the United States Air Force for 21 years before retiring in 1968. He then was employed by The Medical Center of Central Georgia in Macon, Georgia, where he retired after 17 years of service.

Those left to cherish Bob's memory are his wife Nita Davie, Daughter, Dawn Davis, son, Robert Davis and wife Doris, four sisters, Betty Smith and Carol Wallace of Indianola, Sharon Sharp of Des Moines, and Lois Brown of Rockwell. Also surviving are granddaughter, Erin Nuttall, grandsons Brendan Nutall and Benjamin Davis, step-grandchildren Stephanie House and Chris Lee, four step-greatgrandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Marilyn Brood and two brothers, Richard and Leslie Davis.

A memorial will be held Saturday, Aug. 27, at Wages & Sons Gwinnett Chapel, 1031 Lawrenceville Highway, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

BRISTOW - Marcella Ann DeBower, 74, of Bristow died Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.

Gertrude Edna was the oldest child born to Carl and Esther (Tesch) Nack on Sept. 13, 1921, on the family farm in Rock Township in Mitchell County. There she attended school. During her younger years she would rather be outdoors helping her father around the farm than be inside. Prior to her marriage she worked for several families in Osage.

On Dec. 9, 1945, she was united in her home church Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Grafton where she was baptized and confirmed. Gertie was active with the YMCA and Senior Citizens and especially with her church where she belonged to the Ruth Circle, spent many years in attendance and working on the newsletter. Having a very loving heart she also delivered Sunday flowers after services to the infirmed and homebound members. She and her husband for several years donated the huge church Christmas trees for decoration. She enjoyed traveling and one of her favorite trips was to the Holy Land, taking bus trips and going to California in the winter. Gertie had a mind of her own and made all of her own major life decisions. She was independent and strong in her faith to do the right things for others and herself. Even though she and her husband never had children they always thought well and cherished family including all her nieces and nephews and greats. Many Sundays, they would attend dinner at her house where she went all out making everyone feel comfortable.

Surviving Gertie are her sister Marjorie Schroeder, Osage; Brother Gene (Rose Marie) Nack, Grafton, and many nieces and nephews.

Her husband on May 4, 1983, parents, and two sisters Alpha Walling and Ruth Beneke preceded her in death.

Edgar "Junior" Mayhew

GOODELL - Edgar "Junior" Mayhew was born at the family farm in Hancock County, Goodell, on March 30, 1928, to Edgar V. Mayhew and Leona F. (Sandry) Mayhew. He attended school in Goodell from first through 11th grade and graduated from Belmond Community High School in May 1946.

Junior worked on the family farm up until 1989, at which time his father had a stroke and he spent the next few years caring for his elderly parents. His father passed away in May 1993 and his mother in March 1995.

He continued living on the farm until failing health caused him to enter the Belmond Rehabilitation Center in June 2005. This is where he resided until his death on Aug. 23, 2011, due to complications following a stroke.

Junior enjoyed numerous things in his life. Some included watching television and playing bingo as well as enjoying doing crosswords and jigsaw puzzles. Junior also loved to talk about John Deere tractors.

Edgar's love and memories will continue on with his sister, Gladys Marie Sprugel, a resident of Scenic Manor, Iowa Falls; two nieces, Vicki L Sprugel of Marshalltown and Beth (Brent) Hendricks of Grinnell, and their two sons, Isaac B. Hendricks and Zachary W. Hendricks, along with several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar W. and Leona; grandparents and brother-in-law, Dr. Charles Sprugel; and a great-nephew, Justin Hendricks.

A private graveside service will be at a later date. Andrews Funeral Homes in Belmond, Iowa, is handling the arrangements.

David Pitkin

ROCHESTER, Minn. - A celebration of the life of David Pitkin will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church on Thursday, Aug. 25, at 11 a.m. The family will greet family and friends an hour prior to the service.

David died at his home in Rochester on Monday Aug. 22, 2011, of a massive cerebral hemorrhage.

David Winton Pitkin was born Sept. 19, 1942, in Clear Lake, Iowa, to Norval and Doris (Conibear) Pitkin.

In 1961 he graduated from Clear Lake High School in Clear Lake.

In 1963 he married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Kay Shoop, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake.

David graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, with a B.A. degree in mathematics in 1965. He received his master's degree in mathematics in 1969 from the University of Northern Iowa, and later an Educational Specialist degree.
David taught mathematics for five years at East Waterloo High School in Waterloo, and for 32 years at John Marshall High School in Rochester, Minn., retiring in 2001.

As a member of the National Teachers Association and the Rochester Education Association, he served for several years as chief teacher negotiator in contract settlements.

While teaching, he purchased a farm near Oslo, Minnesota, and enjoyed grain farming for the past 25 years. He found great peace planting and watching the crops grow to harvest as they thrived under his care and excellent farm management skills. Everything he did was done to the best of his ability.

Gentle-hearted David loved nature as he fed birds and animals, lingered by his farm creek, and maintained two immaculate lawns.

His grandchildren loved being with him and he with them especially on tractor rides and gator rides at the farm as well as a ride in one of his three classic cars. He thoroughly enjoyed sharing in his children and grandchildren's sporting events and other accomplishments. David loved traveling especially to mountainous scenery locations with many trips to the Western United States/Canada, including Alaska and Hawaii, as well as Norway.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Steven, in infancy.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sandra, one son, Daniel, (Carleen) of Highland Illinois, one daughter, Angela, (Rob) of Corvallive, three grandchildren, David, Alicia, and Laura, one brother, Galen (Cecelia) of Clear Lake, and one sister, Judy (Don) Ytzen of Clear Lake, Iowa along with several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers memorials be given to Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester.

A private family burial will be held at Clear Lake Cemetery in Clear Lake.
