Kenneth L. "Ken" Merfeld

EMMETSBURG - Kenneth L. "Ken" Merfeld, 75, of Emmetsburg died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Inurnment will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Should friends desire, memorials may be left in Kenneth's name in care of his family.
Kenneth L. Merfeld was born on Sept. 14, 1935, in Packard, Iowa, the son of John and Margaret (Hammel) Merfeld. He received his education and graduated from the Chapin High School. Following high school Ken began working for Ralston Purina in Iowa Falls, where he would be employed for 22 years. For 24 years Ken then worked for Kerber Milling in Emmetsburg until his retirement.

On Oct. 5, 1958, Ken was united in marriage to Sharon Anderson at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Mason City; this union would be blessed with three children.

In Ken's free time he enjoyed many hobbies. Among his favorites were woodworking, taking walks, working on puzzles, feeding the squirrels and visiting with his friends at McNally Bakeshop. Ken also enjoyed taking mini-vacations with Sharon, his favorite being their trip to Branson, Mo., to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. In the last year he developed a love of sitting on his front porch swing and watching the Decorah eagle's nest camera.

Those grateful in sharing in his life are his wife, Sharon, Emmetsburg; his children, Rod (Julie) Merfeld, Royal, Jeff (Patricia) Merfeld, Indianapolis, Ind., and Jenny (Eric) Helding, Eldridge; grandchildren, Skye, Hillary, Roman, Abby and Gavin; siblings, Lyle (Betty) Merfeld, Mason City, and Arlene (Gordon) Kammrad, Mason City; as well as many nieces, nephews and other relatives and many friends.

Preceding Ken in death are his parents and siblings Claude Merfeld, Dale Merfeld and Ruth Penneke.

Ervin J. Meyer

LATIMER - Ervin J. Meyer, 91, of Latimer died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.

Memorial services for Ervin J. Meyer will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. Pastor Lindsey Braun will officiate. Burial will take place in Marion Center near Latimer.

Friends may greet the family from 12:30 p.m. until service time on Saturday at the church. Dugger Funeral Home, 320 East St., is in charge of arrangements.

Vera Marie Olesen

IOWA FALLS - Vera Marie Olesen, 85, of Iowa Falls died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at Heritage Care Center, Iowa Falls.

Funeral services for Vera Marie Olesen will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Arlington, with burial at the Taylorville Cemetery, Arlington.

Visitation will be 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 14, at the Linn's Funeral Home, 1521 Washington Ave., Iowa Falls, and one hour before services at the church.

The Linn's Funeral Home Iowa Falls Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Curtis Eugene Ouverson

CLEAR LAKE - Curtis Eugene Ouverson, 82, died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Fertile Church of Christ, 3493 Eagle Ave., Fertile, with Pastor Dennis Ganz and Pastor Rob Perry officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Grant Center Cemetery, rural Fertile.

Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Curtis E. Ouverson Memorial, in care of Lowell Ouverson, 3691 320th St., Clear Lake, IA 50428, that will later be donated to the Fertile Church of Christ for a church project in Curtis' memory.

Curtis Eugene Ouverson was born July 18, 1929, in rural Fertile, the son of Edwin G. and Helen I. (Humphrey) Ouverson. He received his education and graduated from Fertile High School in the class of 1947. Curtis was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Lien on July 15, 1950, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua; to this union two children were born.

Curtis was a lifelong member of the Fertile Church of Christ where he was baptized Dec. 13, 1943. He served as church treasurer for a time, Elder for one year and a Deacon for 50 years. The first priority in his life was serving and loving his Lord and Savior. He also loved his wife and family very much. He enjoyed farming and fishing and his friends. He had fun fishing with his granddaughters at his cabin on Lake Vermillion, Minn.

Curtis and Gwen lived on and farmed near Fertile for more than 57 years before moving to Apple Valley Assisted Living in September of 2007, moving to Oakwood Care Center in August of 2009, and after Gwen's death he moved to Manly Care Center in January of 2010. There he developed many good friendships with residents and caregivers. He appreciated the help he received from the care centers and friends and especially his wife.

Curtis had many health issues in his later years but never complained. He left his troubles to the Lord who sustained him. He sorely missed his wife, Gwen, and daughter Linda, but now will be reunited for Eternity.

Curtis is survived by his son, Lowell (Susan) Ouverson, Clear Lake; son-in-law Harold "Sonny" Brunsvold, Kensett; grandchildren Alissa (Eric) Kruger, Briana (Mike) Frank, Callie (Jeff) Schmidt, Shaina Brunsvold, Amanda Ouverson; great-grandchildren Payten and Tate Kruger, Addison Lee Frank; siblings Dale (Kay) Ouverson, Nelda (Larry) Frahm, Dean Ouverson; sisters-in-law Lovenea Groe, Arlene (Ray) Schlader, Enid (Arlen) Wogen; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Curtis is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gwen; daughter Linda Ouverson Brunsvold; infant brother Lowell; sister Phyllis (Truman) Knudtson; and brother-in-laws Lester Groe and Truman Knudtson.

 Dorothey Jean Oxley

CLEAR LAKE - Dorothey Jean Oxley, 78, of 2418 South Shore Drive died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 North Fourth St., Clear Lake, with Reverend Dean Hess officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery, Emmetsburg.

Visitation will be held today from 5-7 p.m. at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Should friends desire, in lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Zion Lutheran Church in Dorothey's memory.

Dorothey Jean was born Oct. 2, 1932, in Tyler, Minn., the daughter of Richard and Helen (Teufel) Schnell. She received her education and graduated high school in Tyler, Minn. Shortly after graduation she worked in an office in Minneapolis, Minn.

Dorothey was united in marriage to Albert Oxley on March 26, 1951. They lived a short while in Iowa before moving to Chicago, Ill., where Albert worked at the United States Postal Service and Dorothey attended
Northwestern University and continued work in an office.

Albert and Dorothey lived in Chicago for eight years; there they were blessed with three children: Richard, Debra and Albert Jr. Dorothey became a homemaker after the eldest child was born. Albert and Dorothey moved to Corwith, Iowa, where they were blessed with three more children: Lee Ann, Merri Jean and Jim.

In 1969 they moved to Clear Lake, Iowa, where they settled on a small acreage.

Dorothey was an active and dedicated member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake. Dorothey will miss her quilting friends as she especially enjoyed all her time with them. She participated in women's circle, serving church luncheons and dinners, school supply and health drives. Dorothey loved to read, tending to her flower gardens and traveling with Albert across the United States and abroad.

Dorothey and her family always got together the week of the 4th of July each year. This year they celebrated Albert's 93rd birthday and their 60th wedding anniversary.
Dorothey will be deeply missed by her family and friends; her family takes comfort knowing that she is in the arms of her Lord and Savior.

Dorothey is survived by her husband, Albert Oxley Sr., Clear Lake, children Richard Oxley and special friend Joann, Cedar Rapids, Debra (Steve) Bower and their children Michael and Bryan, Greenville, Wis., Albert Oxley Jr., Cedar Rapids, Lee Ann (Mark) Braga and their children David and Hollie, Merri Jean (Bob) Jones, and their children Kerri, Christopher and Rebecca, Kingsport, Tenn., and Jim Oxley, Clear Lake.
Dorothey is preceded in death by her parents.

Ellen Sandell

THOMPSON - Ellen Sandell, 95, of Thompson, recently residing in Forest City, died Friday, Aug. 5, 2011, at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson with Pastor Mark Decker officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Visitation was held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and will continue an hour prior to service at the church.

Ellen Sandell was born on a farm in Linden Township, Winnebago County, on Dec. 25, 1915, the daughter of William H. and Emma (Jensen) Olson. She received her education at Combs County School west of Thompson.

She was united in marriage to Leonard Sandell on Oct. 8, 1934, in Estherville. The couple farmed in the Thompson area and were blessed with two boys, Ronald and Roger.

Ellen liked working in her garden and raising chickens. She began working at the Deluxe Factory in Lake Mills in 1962. While working there she took up bowling and enjoyed her membership in the Deluxe Ladies Bowling League. She retired from Deluxe in 1981.

Ellen was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson and was very active in Circle and Bethany Ladies Aid. In 1993 she moved to an apartment in Forest City and enjoyed this change in her life. In 2002 she moved to Forest Plaza Assisted Living.

Ellen is survived by her two sons, Ronald and his wife Sue of Bemidji, Minn., and Roger of West St. Paul, Minn., along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Stella and Irene; and four brothers, William Junior, Emery, Annel and Leonard (Ole).

Betty C. Willcox

MASON CITY - Betty C. Willcox, 89, of Mason City died Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Graveside services will be held 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with Rev. Kent A. Mechler, chaplain of Good Shepherd, officiating.

Per Betty's wishes her body was cremated and there will be no visitation.

Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of North Iowa, 2700 S. Birch Drive, Mason City, IA 50401.

Betty was born July 16, 1922, in Mason City, the daughter of Chester and Lois (Ruby) DeMoss. She graduated from Mason City High School. On Sept. 3, 1957, Betty was united in marriage to Harry G. Willcox in Mason City. She served many customers at Elm's Hotel and had an avid love for animals.

Betty is survived by her dear friends, Jane Papouchis/Gene Hockenson, Marie and Ted Grady, and Peggy and Larry Davis; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harry, in June of 2003; and step-son, Dennis Willcox, in March of 2003.

IOWA FALLS - Vera Ackerman, 89, of Iowa Falls died Thursday, Aug. 11, 2011, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital.

Funeral services will be Monday, Aug. 15, at 2 p.m. at the Linn's Funeral Home Chapel, 1521 Washington Ave., Iowa Falls.

Visitation will be one hour before the service. Burial will be at Northlawn Memory Garden Cemetery.

WHITTMORE - Marvin L. Gunder, 71, of Whittemore, formerly of Windom, Minn., died Wednesday at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Virgil Haus

SUN CITY, Ariz. - Virgil Haus, 86, of Sun City, Ariz., passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at Boswell Hospital in Sun City.

Virgil was born in Marty, Minn., on Dec. 5, 1924, the son of Henry and Anna Haus. He farmed near Cold Spring, Minn., for a few years before moving to Mason City in 1954.
He became a government meat inspector and worked at Deckers and Armour Meat Packing Plant for 30 years. He retired to Sun City in 1984.

Virgil is survived by his four children: Ray (Jill) of Fond du Lac, Wis., Lucy (Ron) Brunner of Mason City, Alvin of Fond du Lac, Wis., and Melvin (Jane) of La Crosse, Wis. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; and three brothers: Severin (Lorraine), Cyril (Marion) and Elmer (Delores) of Minnesota.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorraine, in 1960; and special friend Lois Barnich in 2011; sisters Adela Salzer and Irene Garding; and brothers Eldred and Alvin.

Virgil has donated his body to science research. A private celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Alma D. Laudner

ROCKWELL - Alma D. Laudner, 80, formerly of 218 Third St., Rockwell, died Thursday morning, Aug. 11, 2011, at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Monsignor John Hemann officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery, Rockwell.

Alma Dell June was born to Marinus and Freida (Nielsen) Petersen in Thornton, on June 11, 1931. There were seven children born to this family.

On Sept. 17, 1948, Alma was united in marriage to Wilbert "Dugan" Laudner in the chapel at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. Alma loved living in Rockwell as well as raising her kids and helping in the family grocery business. She enjoyed gardening and took pride in her flowers.

Survivors include her three sons: Patrick (Gretchen) Laudner, Holland, Mich., Rick (Audrey) Laudner, Rockwell, Kelly (Deb) Laudner, Rockwell; seven grandchildren: Kelli Jo (Jason) Lambrix, Brownstown, Mich.; Trent Laudner, Canal, Winchester, Ohio, David Laudner, Rockwell, Sarah Laudner, Montezuma, Tony (Renee) Laudner, Rockwell, Travis Laudner, Tucson, Ariz., Trisha (Josh) Riley, DeSoto; five great-grandchildren: Ashley Lambrix, Zach and Kylie Laudner, Tyler and Maylee Riley; and one sister, Norma Salier, Nora Springs.

Alma was preceded in death by her husband, Dugan Laudner; her parents; two sisters, Sylvia Pross and Edna Jansen; and three brothers, Harold, Edward and Elmer Petersen.

Ervin J. Meyer

LATIMER - Ervin J. Meyer, 91, of Latimer, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2011, at the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton.

Memorial services for Ervin J. Meyer will be held at 1:30 p.m. today, Saturday Aug. 13, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. Pastor Lindsey Braun will officiate. Ervin John Ernest, the son of Arthur and Mary Immerman Meyer, was born Nov. 27, 1919, on the family farm north of Latimer. Ervin grew up in the Latimer area where he attended country school. He started farming for neighbors and later his father.

Ervin was united in marriage to Margaret Bessman on Dec. 12, 1940, in Alden. The couple made their home in the Latimer and Alexander area where they raised their family. Ervin made farming his life-long occupation. He also was a silent partner in the local business, Latimer Produce, for two years. Ervin and Margaret moved to Latimer in 1983. Ervin entered the Rehabilitation Center of Hampton in 2009.

Ervin is remembered largely for his love of flying. Starting in 1945, for the most part, he was a self taught pilot. Ervin owned and operated his own aircraft. Memories abound when it comes to all the flights Ervin made over his life. From flying into town in the winter to get groceries, to flying his daughter, Marianne, to college in Michigan, to taking a minister to a conference in Colorado; Ervin's piloting experience was extensive. Ervin was a member of the Flying Farmers of America and the Civil Air Patrol. He was a volunteer for the Latimer Museum and very much enjoyed the time he spent e-mailing on the computer. Ervin was a life-long member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer where he was baptized and confirmed.

Ervin is survived by his children, Lawrence and wife Janet of Alexander: Marianne Armento of Springfield, Ill.; four grandchildren: Tamara Mennenga, Rhonda Meyer, Susan Grett and husband, Peter, Courtney Armento-Irvin; seven great grandchildren: Ray, A.J., Cole, Brandon,Taylor, Kellsi and Tristen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Margaret in 2010; son-in-law, Paul Armento III, and a brother, Ivan earlier this year.

 Theodore George Schmidt

MARBLE ROCK - Theodore George Schmidt, 89, died July 28, 2011, at his home in Marble Rock.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 423 Bradford St., Marble Rock, with Chaplin David Byrd officiating. Burial will be in the Rockford Cemetery.

Visitation will be 8:30 a.m until service time.

Theodore George Schmidt was born on April 4, 1922, in rural Marble Rock, Floyd Co., Iowa, the son of Fred and Mabel (Boom) Schmidt.

Max William Sowers
U.S. Air Force (1951-1953)

MASON CITY - Max William Sowers, 82, a former resident of Mason City, passed away Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, in Cedar Falls.

Max was born Aug. 28, 1928, to Helen (Kelly) and J.W. "Bill" Sowers in Ames, Iowa. He was a 1947 graduate of Ames High School and was inducted into the Ames High School Athletic Hall of Fame and the Iowa High School Athletic Association Hall of Fame in recognition of his football and basketball achievements.

He entered the
University of Iowa as a Nile Kinnick Scholar and member of the Hawkeye football team, graduating in 1951. He served in the U.S. Air Force at Chanute Air Force Base, Rantoul, Ill., from 1951-1953.

He married Marilyn Romey on Feb. 2, 1952, in Mason City. Following his Air Force service, they moved to Mason City where they had two daughters, Jean and Edie. He worked at Romey Realty Co. and later Mutual Federal Savings and Loan. In 1972 they moved to Cedar Falls where he was president of Family Federal Savings and Loan for 13 years.

Throughout his life he assumed leadership positions, serving as president of Phi Kappa Psi and as a member of the Student Board of Publications while at the University of Iowa, and as president of Mason City Lions Club, Mason City Country Club, Cedar Falls Chamber of Commerce and Beaver Hills Country Club in Cedar Falls.

Upon retirement in 1987 the couple lived in Clear Lake and Dauphin Island, Ala., until their move to Windridge in the Western Home Communities in Cedar Falls in March 2008.

Max is survived by his wife, Marilyn; daughters Jean (Vaughn) Kubiak, of Richland, Mich., and Edie (Kent) Freise of West Des Moines; six grandchildren: Ryan Kubiak, Allison Kubiak, Rob Kubiak, Keith (Christa) Butler, Pete Butler and Joe (Leah) Butler; and great grandson Grady Butler. He was preceded in death by his parents.

A private family service will be held on Aug. 20 with the Rev. Shelly Wood officiating. Friends and family will join in celebrating and honoring Max's life from 1-3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21, at Windridge, 5311 Hyacinth Drive, Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Dr. H. James Nickerson

MARSHFIELD, Wis. - Dr. H James Nickerson passed away in Marshfield, Wis., on Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2011, at the age of 73 years.

He was born on Dec. 7, 1937, in St. Ansgar, Iowa, the fourth of five children. He was raised on a farm in Iowa and began his education at a country school in Mitchell County, before attending the community public school in his hometown of St. Ansgar.
After graduating from high school in 1956, Dr. Nickerson enrolled at Iowa State University with the intention of studying civil engineering. He soon discovered that his real professional aspiration was to be a physician and changed his major to pre-medicine.

While at Iowa State, he was a member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. In 1959, Dr. Nickerson began medical school at
University of Iowa where he was a member of Phi Beta Pi medical fraternity.

In 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Gretta Ellen Mueller. During medical school, he received an officer's commission to the United States Navy and, after graduating in 1963, moved to Philadelphia where he completed his pediatric residency at the Naval Hospital and Children's Hospital.

In 1966, Dr. Nickerson was assigned by the Navy to the military hospital at Camp Lejeune, N.C. While stationed at Camp Lejeune, he successfully passed the Board Certification examination in Pediatrics.

In 1969, he was honorably discharged from the Navy and moved with his young family to Clinton, where he began a private practice in pediatrics.

In 1970, he moved to Marshfield to continue his Pediatric practice at the Marshfield Clinic. Dr. Nickerson was dedicated and steadfast in providing medical care to children, his professional passion, until his retirement in 2002.

During his career, he received Board Certification in Hematology and Oncology and was a clinical researcher, publishing numerous papers on Hematology, Oncology, and Pediatrics, including ground breaking research on the effects of iron deficiency in female adolescent athletes.

Dr. Nickerson belonged to several professional organizations including the Children's Oncology Group of the Upper Midwest, the International Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Dr. Nickerson loved his family and friends and will always be remembered as a gentle, humble humanitarian, a man of few words.

He was a member of Christ Lutheran Church in Marshfield and enjoyed singing in the church choir.

He is survived by his wife, Gretta; son Bill Nickerson of Longmont, Colo.; daughters Martha Cousino (Gary) of Mackinac Island, Mich.; Jennifer Youngberg (David) of Rochester, Minn.; and Katie Carson (David) of Camas, Wash.; five grandchildren, Nicole, Madeline, and Julia Youngberg, and Emily and Andrew Carson; and three step-grandchildren. Kipp, Gordie and Riann Cousino. He is also survived by two brothers, Verle (Evelyn) Nickerson of St. Ansgar, and Gene (Nedra) Nickerson of Paridise Valley, Ariz., and two sisters Joanne Borchardt of Holland, and Mary Loomer of Minneapolis, Minn.

His parents, Harold and Rose Nickerson preceded him in death.

A celebration of his remarkable life will take place with a visitation at Rembs Funeral Home, 300 South Oak Ave., from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, and at 12 p.m on Aug. 19, at the church.

His memorial service will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 1208 W. 14th St., at 1 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 19, with the Rev. Mark A. Krueger officiating.

Marcella Humpal

SPILLVILLE - Marcella Humpal, age 87, passed away Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011, at home in Spillville.

Marcella "Marcie" Helen (Moudry) Humpal was born Oct. 26, 1923, in Winneshiek County, near Spillville, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Taylor) Moudry. She attended rural schools.

She was united in marriage to Albert Humpal on June 12, 1944, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Spillville. They farmed near Ridgeway, until 2006 when they moved to Spillville with their daughter Shirley and her husband, John Francis. Being with her family was what Marcella most enjoyed.

Marcella spent hours working on her embroidery, which she gave to her family or donated to fundraisers, she worked her puzzle books, played cards at the Spillville Library or at the Ossian Senior Hospice where Albert resides. She often dreamt of her chickens. Early mornings, she said, were the best when she was out feeding her capons which she raised for many years.

Marcella's wish was to donate her body to the Mayo Clinic to advance the study of medical science.

She is survived by her husband, Albert, and six children: Helen (Larry) Svoboda, of Clear Lake, Charles (Patricia), of Ridgeway, Shirley (John) Francis, of Spillville, Elaine Michael (John Osland) of Swisher, Darlene (Merle) Hageman, of Fort Atkinson, and John (Reta) of Waterloo. Also surviving are her grandchildren/step grandchildren: Brian (Lorelei) Svoboda, of Windsor, Colo., Bradley (Jill) Svoboda, of Allen, Texas, Deborah Humpal, of Des Moines, Jeremy (Kristi) Humpal, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Dana (Belinda) Francis, of Bradenton, Fla., Derrick (Leslie) Francis, of Mint Hill, N.C., Molly Michael (Donny) Burkhardt, of Palmetto, Fla., Matthew (Becky) Michael, of Baraboo, Wis., Kristie Hageman (Ryan) Wiltgen, of Spillville, Michael (Rachel) Hageman, of Manchester, Andrew (Nichole) Hageman, of Calmar, Jesse (Sheri) Taylor, of Fredericksburg, Va., and James Humpal, of Waterloo. MASON CITY - Danny Lee Vasquez, 60, passed away Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, at his home.

Dan was born on Oct. 12, 1950, in Mason City. He was the only child of Leo Vazquez and Norma Jean Frazier. He attended Mason City schools.

Quez was a very hard worker and had a wide variety of employment interests over the years. He worked for Bratrud's Yamaha, Manny's Sinclair, Vic's Pizza, Lehigh Cement Co., and especially enjoyed being a bouncer at Warehouse 10 and Lu's Lounge.

He was also employed by the Iowa Department of Transportation for 21 years, until a June 10, 2005, accident disabled him, forcing him to retire.

Quez had a true passion for life - he loved the roar of an engine, squeal of tires, the smell of burnt rubber … he enjoyed riding his Harley with his many friends. Dan always loved riding through the Black Hills of South Dakota during Sturgis Rally with all his "buddies." This big kid also enjoyed his hot rods and classic cars that he had redone over the years.

Dan and Candy attended many car shows and looked forward to the Car Craft Summer Cruise in St. Paul every year. Dan also had a compassionate and sensitive side for animals, his friends, and his family. His dynamic smile and infectious laugh will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Dan is survived by his wife, Candy Pitkin; mother-in-law, Marilyn "Jo" Meyer, of Clear Lake; brothers-in-law, Tim Meyer, of Clear Lake, Brad (Nancy) Meyer, of Apple Valley, Minn., and was "PAPA" to many four-footed fuzz-balls; adopted brothers, Rick Klunder, of Mason City, Kenny Pals, of Thornton, and Vance (Kim) Wendel, of Clear Lake; adopted sister, Dawn (Steve) Havey, of Clear Lake; aunts, Josie Ruiz, of Mason City, Anna Vasquez, of Fort Worth, Texas, and Lupe Reyes, of California; uncle, Rufus (Alice) Vasquez, of Mason City. He is also survived by many cousins, as well as many special friends.

PLYMOUTH - Steven "Steve" Howard Henaman, 22, of Plymouth, died Friday Aug. 12, 2011, from a motorcycle accident in Cass County on Interstate 80.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Manly, with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Interment will be in the Manly Cemetery, Manly.

Visitation will be Tuesday from 4-7 p.m. at the Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly, and then one hour before the service on Wednesday at the church. Family suggests memorials to Steven H. Henaman Memorial Fund.

Steve was born Feb. 1, 1989, in Mason City, the son of Thomas and Nancy (Oltman) Henaman. He attended Manly High School. While attending school, he worked with his dad in construction. Following high school he entered the ironworkers apprenticeship program to become a journeyman ironworker. He graduated in the spring of 2011. He was working out of Ironworkers Local Union No. 67, Des Moines, and was working on building wind towers. He was known by nickname Jet by his co-workers, because of the speed he would climb the towers.

He enjoyed riding horses, motorcycle, snowmobile, hunting and was an avid shot.
He was a member of Iron Workers Local No. 67, Des Moines.

He is survived by father Tom Henaman and Wendy Dahl, Plymouth; mother Nancy, and her husband Dan McCourt, Plymouth; girlfriend "Old Lady" Amy Hays, Plymouth; her nieces Britney and Hayley Zeller; brother Tyler, and his wife Casey Henaman, Manly, and their sons Cole and Blair "Boog"; paternal grandmother, Lois Colling, and her husband Rex, Mason City; stepbrothers Jake Dahl, Cedar Falls, Luke Dahl, Plymouth, Nick Dahl, Manly, Dan McCourt, and his wife Heidi, and their children Nick and Gabrielle, Mason City and stepsister Keri Luhmann, and her husband Jeff, and their daughter Kobi, Jackson, Minn.; Grandma Mona, Grandma Dixie, Grandpa Wayne;"road dog" Jeff Shackelton, Mason City; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and his special hunting companion, Lily.

Josephine "Jo" was born on June 3, 1929, in Belmond, the daughter of Jacob and Elizabeth (Lichman) Poole. She is the last survivor of eight children. She attended school in the Belmond and Britt area and then finished in Mason City when her family moved.

Although she worked outside the home for a short time, she was well- known for her cooking, canning and baked goods. She was a wonderful seamstress and made clothing for her family. She was good hearted and donated to many charities. She was an animal lover her whole life.

Josephine was united in marriage to Robert "Bob" Linne on June 27, 1948, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. For many years she has been a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. Her and her husband Bob enjoyed many fishing trips with the Lunker Club to Canada, often referred to as the "Odd Couples Trip." In the summer she showed off her green thumb raising roses and tomatoes that were as tall as tall could be. In the winter it was time to watch Westerns, mysteries, and Lifetime movies.

Josephine and Bob never had children but took great pleasure in their many nieces and nephews, along with the grandnieces and nephews, which she thought of as her own children.

Her husband Bob died in April 1998; her parents; four sisters, Margaret Lucas, Rose May, Barbara Ann and Mary Poole; and three brothers, Johnny, Frank and Jake Poole, preceded her in death.

Pearl Ruby Peters, the daughter of Halvor and Josephine (Beckjordan) Halvorson, was born on Oct. 12, 1916, in Leland. She was baptized and confirmed at Winnebago Lutheran Church. Pearl attended the rural schools east of Leland. When she was eight years old, her father died and she and her siblings helped her mother on the farm. Pearl graduated from Leland High School in 1935.

On March 9, 1937, she was united in marriage to Burt Edward Peters at the Winnebago Lutheran Church Parsonage. The couple farmed near Forest City for several years. In 1954, they moved to their farm near Hinckley, Minn. They were members of the First Lutheran Church in Hinckley.

In 1977, Pearl attended the area Vocational Institute of Pine City, Minn. Through attending the Institute, she obtained certification as a Home Health Aide.

On May 3, 1988, her husband Burt passed away. In 1991, Pearl moved to Forest City.

She served as a volunteer at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City for many years. She enjoyed her family, cooking, baking, doing crafts, reading, music and making quilts for missions. She was a gracious hostess with a gift for hospitality.

Pearl is survived by two children, Byron (Peggy) Peters and Bonnie Torkelson; seven grandchildren: Allen Peters, Jason Peters, Quentin Peters, John Torkelson Jr., Bradley Torkelson, Andrea (Dr. Kevin) Welch and Rachel Torkelson; step-granddaughter, Dr. Denise Lago; five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Pearl was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Burt; sisters Lillian, Bella, Florence, Amie and Dewie; a brother, Manford and son-in-law, John M. Torkelson.

Joe, in his leisure time, enjoyed painting landscapes and gardening.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; son, Scott; daughter, Jodi Lynn; grandson, Christian; and son, Michael Van Hook.

Also brothers, Jack (Jan), of Urich, Mo., Gerald (Joan), of Tampa, Fla., twin brother Jon (Joan), of Palatine, Ill.; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other family members.

He is predeceased by his parents, Leroy and Edith Ream, and his son, Jeffrey Joe.
A private service was held at Dove Funeral Home in Orlando, Fla.

ROCKFORD - Petty Officer Jon T. Tumilson, 35, a native of Rockford, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, while conducting special operations combat in Afghanistan.

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School gymnasium. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Rockford.

Jon was born July 1, 1976, at Osage. He joined the
U.S. Navy on July 17, 1995, following graduation from the Rudd-Rockford- Marble Rock Community School. He graduated from Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill., in September 1995. He completed Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL School, Coronado, Calif., in April 2002. He served in three west-coast based Special Warfare units and in two east-coast based Special Warfare units.

Petty Officer Tumilson was posthumously awarded the
Purple Heart and Defense Meritorious Service Medal. His other awards include the Purple Heart, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and four Sea Service Deployment Ribbons, and Rifle Expert and Pistol Expert Medals.

He deployed on multiple deployments to include Afghanistan and Iraq.

He is survived by his parents, George and Kathleen Tumilson, of Rockford; two sisters, Kristie Pohlman (Brad Hartgraves), of Cedar Rapids, and Joy (Scott) McMeekan, of Taylor Ridge, Ill; six nieces and nephews: Kobey Pohlman, Kamryn Pohlman, Kelsi McMeekan, Kaitlyn Pohlman, Sydney McMeekan, Isabella McMeekan; 21 aunts, uncles and cousins; and his trusted canine friend, Hawkeye.

Petty Officer Tumilson was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Thomas and Nell Tumilson; maternal grandparents, John and Leona Jacobs; a friend, Kevin Reiter, and his Brothers in Arms.
