Don Heimbuch

MASON CITY - It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Don Heimbuch, who passed away unexpectedly at home of natural causes on Wednesday, April 13, 2011.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19, at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Dan Gerrietts officiating.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, April 18, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Memorials may be directed to the Donald L. Heimbuch Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Donald was born Oct. 28, 1940, in Mason City, the son of Robert and Martha (Graf) Heimbuch, the oldest of 10 children. He graduated from Mason City High School, Class of 1958. He attended Mason City Junior College (NIACC) and then State College of Iowa (UNI) Class of 1962, where he obtained a B.S. in physics along with a teaching certificate. Don took his teaching certificate and moved to Davenport, where he taught physics and science at Williams Junior High and later West High School.

It was while teaching at Williams that he met Sharon Newport. They married on June 10, 1967, in Davenport. To this union, three children were born. In 1968, Don and his new bride moved back to Mason City to engage in farming and the family fertilizer business, Heimbuch Ag Service, with his father. Don enjoyed retirement by traveling the U.S. (visiting 49 states) with wife Sharon and spending time with his children, grandchildren and other family and friends. He also enjoyed telling about the different "rides" he drove to and from auction for Schukei Chevrolet in recent years. Don always took great joy in spoiling his family with great food and special family recipes as well as treating them to the Northwestern Steakhouse and Birdsall's Ice Cream. He was a true "Jack of All Trades" and was often affectionately referred to as "The Walking Encyclopedia" as there was seemingly nothing he couldn't do or didn't know.

Sidney R. Severson

CLARION - Sidney R. Severson, age 69, of rural Clarion, died unexpectedly, Tuesday, April 12, 2011, in Texas while visiting his daughter.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 18, at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, six miles west of Belmond. The Rev. James Harbaugh and Stan Watne will be officiating. Burial will be in the St. Olaf Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be today from 5-8 p.m. at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E., Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services at the church Monday. Memorials may be directed to the family or the donor's wishes.

Sidney Severson, the son of Kenneth Pershing and Icle (Leonard) Severson, was born June 29, 1941, at Belmond. He grew up in Grant Township, Wright County, where he attended rural schools in Grant Township. Sid then attended Clarion Schools where he graduated with the class of 1960. While in high school Sid participated in various extracurricular activities and excelled at the sport of wrestling. Sid had placed third in the Iowa State High School Wrestling Championships in 1959 in the 165-pound weight class. His love of the sport of wrestling continued throughout his entire life and most recently he enjoyed following his grandson Knuton's wrestling accomplishments.

Sid was a lifelong farmer who truly loved to work the earth and raise his animals. He loved to reap the fruits of the harvest and enjoyed the rewards of his hard work and all the outdoors had to offer. Sid had a life-long passion for horses and had even spent the last moments of his life riding horses while on one of his treks to visit his daughter in Texas. He simply loved the solitude of times spent on the back of these majestic creatures. Sid's love of horses shown through in many of the organizations he gave his knowledge and leadership to over his lifetime. Sid served on the Iowa High School Rodeo Board of Directors as a district director in the 1970s. He spent 25 years working with the Iowa Cutting Horse (I.C.H.A.) Association where he had held every position including multiple terms as president. Sid was inducted into the "I.C.H. A. Hall of Fame" in 2006.

Sid was united in marriage to Sherry German on Jan. 13, 1986, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Together the couple enjoyed life on the farm in rural Wright County. They looked forward to times spent together in the garden and attending the many activities of their children and grandchildren. Sid relished times spent cheering his kids and grandkids on in whatever activity they may have been involved in. He was their Number One fan in life.

Sid retired from full- time farming in 1993, but never truly retired. In retirement he continued to pursue his passion of horses, and in more recent times could be found upon the back of his "Iron Horse" as well, as he had taken a new hobby of riding his Harley-Davidson. A new hobby he had loved. Sid also loved to spend time tinkering in his shop making items out of steel and other materials.

Not being a man to sit still for too long, Sid had worked for seven years at North Central Co-op in Clarion during his retirement, and recently had done some driving for Hagie's Manufacturing in Clarion.

Those who had the privilege of crossing in Sid's life footsteps will remember him as a gentleman who truly relished the simple things in life. They will miss his mild personality, his friendly hand shakes, warm and welcoming smile and the twinkle in his eyes and his magnetic laugh. Sid was always up for a good conversation and never met a stranger that didn't become a friend.

His legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of his wife, Sherry Severson, of Clarion; her children, John (Jenna) German, and their children Desiree and Ethan, all of Belmond, and Nick (Stacy) German, and their children, Page and Justin all of Clarion; Sid's children, Troy (Beth) Severson, and their children Allison, Clayton, and Knuton Severson, all of Clarion; a daughter, Traci Gordon, and her children Alaina and Landon Gordon, all of Clarion; and a daughter, Tonya (Kenny) Scribner, and their children Paige and Jarrett Scribner all of Sanger, Texas; and other extended family and countless friends.

Sid was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Icle.
