Donald L. "Don" Gilbert
U.S. Army WWII
MASON
CITY - Donald L. "Don" Gilbert, 80, of 1000 N. Eisenhower Ave., died
Tuesday, April 5, 2011, at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 9, at the First
Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E., with the
Rev. Charles Aurand and the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating.
According to Don's wishes, he will be cremated. Private inurnment
services will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery.
Full military rites will be provided by the Mason City Veterans Memorial
Association.
Nancy and her family will greet friends from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Saturday,
April 9, in the Stone Fellowship Room at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa
or KCMR Radio.
Don was born July 10, 1930, in Buffalo Center, the son of Harry and
Jennie (Rippentrop) Gilbert. He graduated from Buffalo Center High
School and following graduation enlisted in the
Army.
Don served overseas in the Far East Command, mostly in Okinawa. He was
in the 76th Engineering Construction Battalion which was connected to
the Marines.
Following his discharge, he came to Mason City, where he met and later
married Nancy Biederman of Osage on Oct. 16, 1954. To this union three
children were born, Brenda, Nancy and Darrell.
Don and Nancy have lived all of their lives in Mason City, except for a
brief time in Phoenix, Ariz., Tyler, Texas, and Osage.
Following the military, Don worked for several construction companies
before he started his own company, Donald L. Gilbert Construction Co.
Inc. He built over 250 homes in Mason City, predominately in the Bel Air
addition and others throughout Mason City and Clear Lake. He also did
light commercial work, including the remodeling of the former
Indianhead, Krieger's Greenhouse, the IOOF Home, former Juvenile Home
and others.
Don was known for the quality of his work and his integrity. He retired
early because of knee problems which plagued him since a football injury
in high school. Even then he never gave up his interest in woodworking,
always maintaining a little shop where he did custom work, and making
furniture and small decorative things for family and friends. He also
made many clocks, both grandfather and schoolhouse varieties.
Don loved to hunt and fish and kept family and friends well-supplied
with fresh fish. He was well-known for his fish fries. He made two trips
to Alaska, bringing back fresh salmon and halibut.
For many years, he and his fishing buddies would wait for the signal,
"The ice is out" at De Mille Lac Lake in Ontario, Canada, and away they
would go, usually on Mother's Day weekend. Don also owned several cabins
in northern Minnesota, on Lake Inguadona, Mule Lake and Woman Lake.
He was an avid hunter, hunting for deer, bobcats, and other wildlife out
West and in Canada, his pride and joy being a moose. The moose head hung
over the fireplace and every child who visited had to be held up to "pet
the moose." It wore a red ribbon at Christmas time.
Don was a longtime member of the First Congregational United Church of
Christ where he served on the Board of Trustees and the Prudential
Board. He helped maintain the church building and also built several
pieces of furniture for the church. He was a member of
VFW Post
#733 in Mason City where he served as commander and then went on to
serve as Third District commander. He was appointed National Aide de
Camp several times and National Chief of Staff. He also served as Junior
Vice Commander for the State of Iowa.
For many years, he was editor of the state newspaper, The Iowa Voice,
and was also the State Voice of Democracy Chairman. For 10 years in the
spring, Don attended meetings in Washington, D.C., with other VFW
members throughout the United States.
After retiring from these activities, Don made flag boxes for friends
and also to sell. All of his projects were beautifully done. He was
well-respected in the state for his efforts and devotion to duty.
Besides his work, hunting and fishing, he also loved to travel, see his
grandchildren, work with flowers and his coffee groups.
Don is survived by his wife, Nancy, of Mason City; daughters, Brenda
Gilbert of West Lafayette, Ind., and Nancy Gilbert (Mike Despenas) of
Des Moines; son, Darrell Gilbert (Brenda Andrews) of Johnston;
grandchildren, Grace Cannell (Elias) of Wheaton, Ill., Kevin Willis of
West Lafayette, Ind., Jared, Jenna and Nicole Gilbert of Johnston; and
brothers, Harry (Nancy) Gilbert, Robert (Arlene) Gilbert and David
(Patricia) Gilbert, all of Mason City, and Russel (Virginia) Gilbert of
Brook Park, Minn.
Don was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Mary
Dolling, Arlene Cronk and Lily Gilbert.
Don lived a long and productive life and was a devoted husband and
father. He loved his grandchildren, two of whom knew him as Papa and the
others as Grandpa. He will be sadly missed by his family and all who
knew him.

Marian J. Wilder
MASON
CITY - Marian J. Wilder died peacefully on Tuesday (April 5, 2011) at
her home at Willow Pointe Assisted Living in Mason City. She was 91
years of age.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday (April 8, 2011) at
Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, with the Rev. Kenneth B.
Gehling as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Casimer Cemetery, Wells,
Minn.
Visitation will be held Thursday evening (April 7, 2011) from 4 p.m.
until 7 p.m. at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E.,
Mason City, where a Catholic Daughters of America Rosary will be recited
at 6:30 p.m.
Should friends desire, memorials may be directed to the Marian J. Wilder
Memorial Fund.
Marian was born and raised in North Mankato, Minn., the daughter of
Michael and Barbara (Steinbach) Schons; she was one of eight children.
She graduated from Good Counsel of Mankato, Minn. She worked at the
movie theater when the movies were just 25 cents.
She met the love of her life, Raymond Wilder, at a dance in Mankato.
They were married on June 3, 1943, in Corpus Christie, Texas, where Ray
was a pilot in the Marine Corps. They eventually landed in Mason City in
1957 and were blessed with 11 children.
Marian was known for her kind heart. Even during the hardest times, the
train hobos knew where they could get a sandwich while passing through
Sleepy Eye, Minn.
Devastated when Ray died at the age of 50, being the strong-willed
person she was, she had to learn to drive. She got a job with the Mason
City Schools as a para to help support the seven children still at home.
She took care of the kids for 40 years, between her own 11 children,
working at Mason City High School, Hoover Elementary and eventually
babysitting in her own home. She had a hard time cooking for one after
cooking for 13 for so many years.
Marian sewed everything from wedding dresses to curtains. We could

Zona (Weld) Whitten
Rowan
- Zona (Weld) Whitten, age 96, formerly of Rowan, died March 22, 2011,
at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond with her daughter holding her
hand.
Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 16, at the United
Church of Rowan. Pastor Nancy Hofmeister will be officiating. Inurnment
will take place in the Graceland Cemetery, Rowan.
The family will be present at the church beginning at 10 a.m. on
Saturday to greet family and friends. A luncheon and time of fellowship
will follow the services in the church basement.
Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in Zona's
name may wish to direct them to the family in care of Kay McCulley,
14431 Wolfram St. N.W., Ramsey, MN 55303, or to their own choice.
Zona was born at home only seven miles away on "Snarl Street," (a name
unrelated to her unassuming personality) in Grant Township, Wright
County, on Jan. 15, 1915. She grew up on farms in Wright County and
Minnesota where she especially loved riding horses. She worked for her
room and board in Clarion so that she could attend Clarion High School
where she graduated in 1933.
After working as a waitress at the Hotel Moore, she and Kenneth Whitten
were married on Sept. 1, 1935. They farmed most of their lives around
Rowan. In 1943, with their two daughters, the family moved to Vancouver,
Wash., where both Kenneth and Zona worked in the Kaiser Shipyards for
nine months. They returned to the Whitten family farm where they lived
until heir retirement in 1973. Zona was very active as a Girl Scout
leader, 4-H leader, and member of the Congregational Church where she
taught Sunday school and sang in the church choir for many years. When
her daughters went to college she worked at the P & G Grocery and a
Dougherty Jewelry Store in Belmond and was named "Sales Person of the
Year" in 1969. On retirement in 1974, they moved to Rowan and spent nine
enjoyable winters in Apache Junction, Ariz.
After Kenneth had a severe stroke, Zona cared for him at their apartment
in Rowan for seven years. After his death in 1995, she was still able to
enjoy traveling across the country and visited her grandchildren in
Louisiana, Ohio, Illinois, and Oregon and played lots of cards, her
favorite past time. Zona was determined to overcome numerous health
issues and lived independently the last four plus years in the Belmond
Community Apartments where many residents remembered her as that
friendly clerk in Dougherty's. She had a quick wit and enjoyed a good
story.
Her family celebrates her life as a mother of daughters Donna Dawn
Sturdivant (Roland) of Metairie, La., Madeline Kay McCulley (Roger)
Ramsey, Minn.; "third" daughter and niece Wilma Aldrich of Rowan; and
"like a son" Larry Aldrich; grandmother of Tony, Michael (Fannie), and
Nick (Rose Marie) Vaughn, Scott McCulley (Cass Kovel) and Tonya McCulley
(s.o. Taylor Grover); great-grandmother of 15; and
great-great-grandmother of one.
As the last survivor of her generation in the Carl and Grace Weld and
Hugh and Bertha Whitten families, she became mother and grandmother as
well as aunt to the eleven remaining nieces and nephews and their
families, a role she relished.
