Eladio Rubalcava

MASON CITY -Eladio Rubalcava, 90, died Thursday (May 13, 2010) at his home in Mason City after a courageous battle with cancer.

We will celebrate Eladio's legacy and life with a Mass at 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with Monsignor John Hemann as celebrant.

Eladio Rubalcava was born Jan. 21, 1920, in Yahualica, Jalisco, Mexico. At a very young age Eladio worked as a tailor with his father. In his early 20s, Eladio left Mexico for a new life in the United States, moving to Los Angeles, Calif. By day he tailored for the Hollywood set with the skills he perfected in his youth. By night, he entered and won local dance competitions with his Jitterbug.

In 1946, Eladio made his way to Mason City and met his future wife, Susan, at a local dance. The two were married in Los Angeles on June 16, 1948, and spent their first year of marriage there before returning to Mason City.

Eladio was quickly hired by Lehigh Cement Company and remained employed there for 37 years without missing a single day of work. Eladio enjoyed exceptional physical health, keeping a modest diet, and he found joy in exercising almost every day. During winter, family members living in Mason City often woke up to find Eladio shoveling their driveway after snowstorms. He was active in the community as a Little League baseball coach, a Boy Scout leader and as a devoted member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

If you stopped by the house for a visit, Eladio would make sure you left having eaten something, drank something and if you were up to it having tried some of his famous homemade "hot pepper."

At family parties, his grandchildren would find Grandpa Eladio slipping a $5 bill into their palm when no one else was looking. And at weddings, leading the family on the dance floor, Eladio proved he never lost his love for dancing.
Eladio was a humble, joyful man with a big smile who loved life and loved his family. He was the embodiment of the American Dream. And his legacy is a blueprint for how to live life greatly, take care of your family, take care of yourself, stay active, have an easy smile and enjoy the little things.

Eladio is survived by his wife of 62 years, Susan (Espinosa) Rubalcava; son, John (Julie) Rubalcava of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Susan (Dennis) Greer of Owatonna, Minn.; son, Robert Rubalcava of Mason City; daughter, Pattie Dunn, of Mason City; daughter, Jean Benn of Atlantic, Iowa; seventeen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; brothers, Enrique and Rigoberto of Los Angeles, Calif.; sister, Maria Morales, of Los Angeles, Calif.; brothers, Juan and Gregorio of Mexico City; sister-in-law, Della (Jerome) Dix of Concord, Calif.; sister-in-law, Kathryn Espinosa of Mason City; brother-in-law, Paul "Blackie" (Mavis) Espinosa of Mason City; and brother-in-law, Lawrence (Gladys) Espinosa of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Refuguia and Juan Rubalcava; brother, Antonio; sister, Francis; brother, Jesus; son-in-law, Jon Dunn; and in-laws, Pablo and Petra Espinosa.

Special thanks to the caregivers of Hospice of North Iowa, Dr. Steven Snyder and staff of Mason City Cancer Center and Dr. Kostandions Sideras of Mayo Clinic (Rochester).

Memorial contributions may be made to the Eladio Rubalcava Memorial Fund.

Janet Downing
GREENE - Janet Helen (Wood) Downing, rural Greene, died Thursday (May 13, 2010).

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Greene.

Visitation will be at the church from 9 a.m. until time of service.

Janet was born on Oct. 29, 1934, in Williams, at the home of her parents, Lyle Edward and Leona Wilma (Jaynes) Wood.

Janet graduated from Mason City High School in 1951. She spent her early adult years working in Mason City, Chicago, Illinois, and St. Ansgar, Iowa.
She was united in marriage to Daniel Joseph Downing on Sept. 9, 1967, at the St. Ansgar Catholic Church in St. Ansgar. To this union was born three children. Daniel died in July 2002.

Although Janet had many interests and talents, nothing was more important to her than family and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Through the years many Saturdays were spent shopping with her mother and her children and Sunday afternoons were spent with her family in Williams or at her parents in St. Ansgar just simply visiting and enjoying each other's company.

Janet will be remembered as a wonderful cook who tried to make every Sunday and holiday special. Her family would look forward to her big mid-morning homestyle breakfasts, her many-course dinners, and her wonderful deserts. She became popular at reunions and holidays for her "24 Hour" salad. Her grandchildren requested her fudge every Christmas.

As her children were growing up, it was important to Janet that she expose them to many cultural activities, often taking them to various art fairs, music performances, theatre productions, and piano lessons. One of her lifelong wishes was to see a performance of the Radio City Rockettes, which she did, with her family, in December 2007.

Janet's greatest joy was watching her grandchildren grow. She appreciated each and every one of them and enjoyed simply talking to them as well as doing activities with them. Some of her favorite activities with them were working on jigsaw puzzles, playing board games, picking apples, making currant or grape jelly, and coloring Easter eggs. She also enjoyed sitting back and just watching them be kids and have fun with each other.

Janet always wanted birthdays and Christmases to be special and would spend a lot of time searching relentlessly for the perfect gift. She was never one to get caught up in having material things or spending a lot of money on herself, but if there was something that she thought would make a difference to someone, she was very generous.

Janet is survived by her children: Christy (Tim) Laube of Charles City, Tom (Amber) Downing of Shell Rock; and Ross Downing of Hopkins, Minn.; grandchildren: Trenton Laube, Caitlyn Laube, Daniel Laube, Jordan Downing, and Jared Downing; one sister, Joan Fielding Wood of Williamsburg; one aunt, Velma Pelz of Blairsburg; and three sisters-in-law, Evelyn Downing of Clear Lake, Mildred Goodenberger of Coralville, and Margaret Downing of Waverly; along with several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Lynne Louise Wisman

MASON CITY - Lynne Louise Wisman, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2010, at Muse Norris Hospice after a recurrence of her cancer. All of her family was with her.

Lynne Louise Pearson was born on April 13,1941, in Charles City, to Lynn (Tex) Pearson and Louise Pearson. She attended Roosevelt Elementary School through first grade in Mason City, and then lived in Charles City again, before moving to Oelwein, where she attended school through tenth grade. She moved back to Mason City with her family in 1957 and has been a life-long resident ever since.

Lynne was united in marriage to Theodore (Ted) John Wisman at United Methodist Church on Oct. 28, 1960. They are the parents of four children, six grandchildren, and one great-grandson.

Ted's nickname for Lynne was "Lovey" and it was used throughout their marriage. It was an appropriate name as she was full of love, life, and laughter and she bestowed those gifts upon her family and friends. She lived life to its fullest and appreciated nothing more than a zany situation that made her laugh.

She was quick-witted and was always able to look at life's follies from her own unique perspective. She had often told her family that she had lived a full, rich life and had no regrets.

No description of Lynne would be complete without mentioning her creativity and artistic talents. She sketched, painted in pastels and oils, enjoyed ceramics, pottery and photography. However the last and greatest expression of her talent was her writing. She made us laugh, she made us cry, but most of all she had a way of making us reflect on our own lives. We will all miss her and her weekly column but her writing is a legacy left to us all.

Her parents, whom she dearly loved, preceded Lynne in death.

She is survived by her husband of 49 years, Ted Wisman. She is also survived by her children, John and Allie Wisman, Robert Wisman, Holly and Ken Sagar, Mary and Karl Maiwald; and her daughter-in-law, Karen Wisman, the mother of Max and Jonathan Wisman. She will be missed by her grandchildren, Max and Jonathan Wisman, Nick Mennen, Jesse, Charlie and Molly Maiwald; and great-grandson, Keaton Mennen. Her two sisters, Nancy Gunther and Marsha Bailey, of Camarillo, Calif. and her brother, Frank Pearson, of Mason City, also survive Lynne.

A time of reflection and reminiscing will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. Mason City.
Please come ready to share stories and thoughts if you would like.

A gathering for friends and family will be from 5 p.m. until service time.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to Hospice of North Iowa. Condolences may be share with the family at www.Fullertonfh.com.

Joe Wollner

BANCROFT - Joe Wollner, 86, of Bancroft, died Saturday (May 15, 2010) after a battle with cancer at Good Shepherd Health Center, Mason City, with family at his side.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2010, at St. John the Baptist Church, Bancroft. Burial will be next to his beloved wife of 65 years in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Bancroft.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Bancroft, with a rosary beginning at 4 p.m. and a scripture prayer service beginning at 7 p.m.

Joseph Francis "Joe" Wollner was born on March 3, 1924, in Emmetsburg, to John Edward and Margaret Rose (Deneen) Wollner. He graduated from Cylinder High School in 1943.

On Nov. 28, 1944, Joe married Lois Jean Gengler at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Whittemore. They lived and farmed near Cylinder and Graettinger before moving to Bancroft in 1949. He started working for Welp's Hatchery when he moved to Bancroft and worked there for over 51 years, ending on March 1, 2000.

After his retirement from Welp's, he and Lois took several trips to the South during the winter where they were able to enjoy the sun and do a little golfing. For the past seven years, Joe devoted his life to caring for Lois, whose health deteriorated steadily until her death in November 2009.

Joe never missed a chance to pull somebody's leg, or tell a joke. His pride and joy were his children and their families. He enjoyed all celebrations, especially if he could sing happy birthday or tell a story or two.

He relished playing cards, spending time with friends and family, growing tomatoes to share with friends and most of all, golfing.

Joe and Lois were active at the North Kossuth Golf Club from its inception in 1963, where they were lifetime members and may have spent more time at the course than any other couple in town.

Left to cherish his memory are children, Mike (Judy) Wollner, of Mason City, Anne (David) Seago, of Tacoma, Wash., Dave (Sue) Wollner, of Baltimore, Md., Joe (Tracy) Wollner, of Brainerd, Minn., Chuck (Kim) Wollner, of Wisconsin Dells, Wis., Dan (Barb) Wollner, of Panora, and Jean (Dan) Mujica, of Mason City. Joe is also survived by 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Also by his brother Ed (Marge) Wollner, of Milford; brothers-in-law, Kenny Kenyon, of Emmetsburg, and Norv Elbert, of Grafton, N.D.; and sisters-in-law, Julie Wollner, of Chicago Ridge, Ill., Mary Gengler, of Algona, Patricia Gengler, of Algona, Carole (Bill) Ristau, of Eagle Grove; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lois, on Nov. 19, 2009; his brother, Mike Wollner; two sisters, Margaret Kenyon and Josephine Elbert; brothers-in-law Robert Gengler, Ralph Gengler, and Frank Brink; and his sister-in-law, Elaine Brink.

Joe's family would like to thank Hospice of North Iowa and Good Shepherd Health Center for their compassionate care during his final days.

Kirk Michael Struthers was born Nov. 2, 1943, on a farm in Kossuth County. He is the youngest of four boys born to Dale and Sadie Struthers. Kirk grew up on the family farm near Wesley and graduated from Titonka High School in 1962.

Kirk's passion for cars led him to attend a mechanics school in Omaha, Neb., following high school graduation. He later worked for Dau's Garage in Algona where he had the opportunity to meet the love of his life, Jan.

Kirk married Janice Ringsdorf on July 10, 1965, at First United Methodist Church in Algona. Kirk was a loving and devoted father to two children, Angela (Angi) and Todd. He was proud to serve with the Army National Guard.

Kirk worked briefly for Algona Publishing, several years for Kossuth Mutual Insurance, Farm and Home Insurance & Realty, and was a branch manager of the Security State Bank in LuVerne.

He enjoyed talking and joking with his customers and fellow employees. In his spare time, Kirk collected completely original parts to build/restore his 1957 Chevy. He loved convertibles, and continued to own different makes and models of cars throughout the years, often entering his cars in shows and driving them in parades. His two favorites were his red and white Corvettes.

Besides cars, Kirk enjoyed motorcycles, boating and water skiing with his family in Okoboji, playing cards with friends and family, golfing, sports, and attending his children and grandchildren's activities. His love, generous spirit, and sense of humor will be greatly missed by family, friends, customers and acquaintances.

Kirk was a member of Doan Methodist Church near Titonka, First United Methodist Church of Algona, River Road Golf Club, Toastmasters, Morwen Kiwanis, Algona Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors, and Iowa Board of Realtors. Years of volunteer work for Algona Band Day led to the honor of being the parade's grand marshal along with his wife, Jan, in 2000.

Kirk and Jan were both diagnosed with cancer on the same day in May 2008. Jan passed away days later (May 18, 2008), and Kirk continued his courageous battle with multiple myeloma with several setbacks for two years. Kirk passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, the same date that Jan died.
He was surrounded by the love and support of his family and close friends during his last few days.
