HAMPTON - Eunice M. Cordes, 78, of Hampton died Thursday (April 29, 2010) at her home in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, at Zion Reformed Church in rural Sheffield. The Rev. Arthur J. Zewert and the Rev. Rodney Meester will officiate the service.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 3, at Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Burial will take place Wednesday, May 5, at the Ebenezer Reformed Church Cemetery in Oregon, Ill.

FOREST CITY - Arthur Gilbertson, 72, of Forest City, died Jan. 28, 2010, at the Muse Norris Hospice in Mason City.

Graveside burial service for Arthur Gilbertson will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 3, at the Madison Township Cemetery in Forest City with Vicar Corey Smith of Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating.

Paula Ann Johnson

BELMOND - Paula Ann (Binnebose) Johnson, 53, of Belmond,went home to heaven on March 8, 2009.

Memorial services for Paula Johnson will be held Saturday, May 1, 2010, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, rural Belmond, Iowa, with Reverend James Harbaugh and Reverend James Gochenouer officiating. Inurnment will take place at St. Olaf Lutheran Cemetery at a later date.

Visitation will be held on Friday, April 30, 2010 from 5 to 7 p.m. at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, and one hour prior to services at the church.

Paula was born on February 10, 1956 to Neil and Betty (Jorgenson) Binnebose in Marshall,Minnesota. The family moved to Mason City where Paula graduated from high school in 1973.

After graduation, Paula met and fell in love with Dallas Johnson. Dallas and Paula were married at St. James Lutheran Church in Mason City on October 15, 1977. Afterwards, the couple resided on the family farm outside of Belmond for many years.

Their unending love produced three children, Elizabeth, Kyle, and Seth. As a testament to her strength, Paula accomplished her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse while raising her three children. Paula was a dedicated and compassionate nurse at the Belmond Health Care Center. She placed her patients first and was always willing to help others.

Paula enjoyed spending time with her family the most. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling, cooking, baking, making crafts, and most of all talking to others.Her camera was never far away, as she loved capturing memories over the years.

Paula always had a cheerful personality and could be counted on to provide support to anyone who needed it. She focused her life around helping others and her impact is evident in the countless lives she touched.

Paula's legacy of selflessness and caring for others leaves many people with a lifetime full of memories. Left to cherish her life is her grateful family and community. Paula's family includes her devoted husband Dallas, loving children Elizabeth, Kyle (Lisa), and Seth; father Neil, sister Karen (Ron) Bull, and brothers Craig (Janelle) and Mark; and other countless family members, friends, and coworkers.

Everett E. Showalter

OSAGE - Everett E. Showalter, age 85, of Osage left the loving hand of his wife, Marjorie Showalter, for the caring hand of the Lord on April 29, 2010, holding the hands of his loving family.

Mass of Christian burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 5, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage with military honors at the grave by Osage American Legion Post 278.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a Scripture wake service at 6:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Everett Showalter Memorial Fund.

Everett was born Jan. 15, 1925, near Elma. He served in the Marines during World War II and was a member of the American Legion for 64 years. He was also a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 50 years. Everett was a professional photographer and enjoyed gardening, fishing and bluegrass music.

Everett is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Marjorie (Dodge) Showalter, married on July 12, 1950; son, Tim Showalter of North Liberty; daughter, Cheryl (Stan) Webb of Cannon Falls, Minn.; daughter, Cherie (Court) Ehrhardt of Madison, N.C.; six grandchildren; six great-granddaughters; three step great-grandchildren; three step great-great-grandchildren; and a sister, Madonna (Jerry) Fox of Elma.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Kim and Andy; his parents; and five siblings.

HAMPTON, Minn. -Sandra C. Stokesbary, 67, of Hampton, Minn., passed away Friday (April 30, 2010).

She is survived by husband, Daryl; children, Gretchen (Jean Mayer) Stokesbary and Heidi (Matt) Obrig; grandchildren, Mark and Jason; mother, Kathryn Day; brothers, George (Jan) and Merrill Day; and also by loving nieces and nephews.

Judy Marie Tietjens

MASON CITY - Judy Marie Tietjens, 58, of 309 S. Crescent Drive, died Wednesday (April 28, 2010) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City. There will be an Order of Eastern Star service held at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening.

Judy Marie Jones was born on Aug. 15, 1951, in Port Arthur, Texas, the daughter of Ernest and Mildred (McMains) Jones. She graduated from Port Acres High School and later enlisted into the Air Force. Judy was united in marriage to Clyde Earl Tietjens on Dec. 17, 1969; to this union two children were born.

Judy enjoyed crafts, reading and cooking. She was an active member in the Order of the Eastern Star.

Judy is survived by her husband, Clyde Tietjens, of Mason City; son, Harold W. Tietjens, of Mason City; daughter, Kathryn J. Kolby, of Crystal Lake, Mich.; five grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters; along with other relatives and friends.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents.

Harris C. Dillabough

MASON CITY - Harris C. Dillabough, age 90, of Mason City died Wednesday (April 28, 2010) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A private family committal service will be held at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery with Pastor Kathy Graves of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating.

Harris was born on Jan. 24, 1920, in Mason City, the son of Harry and Tina (Johnson) Dillabough. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1938 and also attended Mason City Junior College.

On Sept. 21, 1940, Harris married Marie Palenyk in Mason City. Harris worked for the Milwaukee Railroad for 17 years, co-owned the Organ Tap Tavern in Manly in the 1950s and in later years worked in sales. He was a life member of the Elks and the Moose Lodge and was a former Mason. Harris was also a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. Harris enjoyed bowling, golfing, dancing and playing cards, especially poker. He also enjoyed being a snow bird in Texas.

Harris is survived by his daughter, DeAnne Gillard and husband, John, of Mason City; one granddaughter, Heather Black, and husband, Mark, of Clear Lake; one grandson, Doug Gillard of Mason City; two great-granddaughters, Alexis Mariner and Dakota Tarr, both of Clear Lake; one sister, Phyllis Waldron of Austin, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Marie Dillabough, and his mother, Tina Kahler.

Maurice M. "Morrie" Logan

POPLAR GROVE, Ill.-Maurice M. "Morrie" Logan, 77 years, of Poplar Grove, Ill., died Saturday (May 1, 2010) in the O.S.F. St. Anthony Medical Center.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday May 5, in St. James Catholic Church with the Rev. Brian Geary serving as pastor and celebrant. Burial will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Belvidere Funeral Home, 203 Logan Ave., Belvidere, Ill. A scriptural wake service to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Born Oct. 22, 1932, in Dougherty, the son of Mulford M. and Susie Catherine (Considine) Logan. He married Marlene M. Merriss.

Morrie was a retired mechanic for Warner Lambert Co., a member of St. James Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Loyal Order of the Moose.

He is survived by six children, Jay (Yuko) Logan, Christine (Jeff) Cleaveland, Dennis (Mary) Logan, Julie (Terry) Stromquist, Kent Logan and Kurt (Kim) Logan; 19 grandchildren, Dawn Dixon, Nicholas Logan, Grant Cleaveland, Erin Cleaveland, Brandi (Jai) Shanata, Ashli Logan, T.J. Stromquist, Miranda Stromquist, Kyle (Becky) Logan, Jarred Logan, Chelsie Logan, Dillon Logan, Maura Logan, Ann Logan, Trevor Logan, Casey (Jennifer) Wiggins, Stacey (Norton) Van Depoole, Tayna Christiansen and Angela (Kevin) Alderman; 13 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Maureece M. Marr

RICEVILLE - Maureece Marr, age 89, died Friday (April 30, 2010) at the Riceville Family Care and Therapy Center.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 4, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville with burial in Calvary Cemetery at Riceville.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Conway Funeral Home in Riceville with a rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil service at 6 p.m.

Maureece M. Marr was born March 21, 1921 ,in Howard County, west of Elma, the daughter of Merle and Nellie (Moudy) McDaniel. She attended the rural school and graduated from eighth grade in 1935. In May 1977 Maureece received her GED from North Iowa Community College.

On June 22, 1937, Maureece was united in marriage to Leslie J. Marr at Riceville. Leslie and Maureece farmed southeast of Riceville until 1969 when they moved to their new home in Saratoga. After Leslie's death, she moved into Riceville. Maureece was a farm partner, homemaker and drove school bus for the Riceville Community School from 1968 to 1988.

Maureece is survived by her children: Jerry (Susan) Marr of Spring Valley, Minn., Jim (Sue) Marr of Riceville and Emil (Rita) Marr of New Hampton; 10 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie, on May 30, 1995; one brother, Leonard McDaniel; and one sister, Irene Lubbert.

Kenneth J. Merfeld

WESLACO, Texas -Kenneth John Merfeld, of Weslaco, Texas, died Wednesday (April 28, 2010) at the age of 74, after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Formerly of Mason City, Merfeld retired from Con Agra/Armour Foods in 1994.

Kenneth is survived by his wife of 52 years, Myrna A. (Thompson) Merfeld, their three children, Paul R. Merfeld of Woodward; Dr. Stephen J. Merfeld, wife, Janice, and children of Oshkosh, Wis., and Karla A. Newton, husband, Todd, and children of McHenry, Ill. Kenneth is also survived by his three brothers, Richard (Rita), Greene; Roger (Edi), Rockford, and Raymond (Eva), East Dubuque, Ill., and two sisters, Mary Stadler (Fran), Grand Junction, Colo., and Rose Leaver (the late Ted Leaver), Slatington, Penn.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leander and Gila (nee Garber) Merfeld, of Marble Rock.

Kenneth will be remembered for his sense of humor. He will be dearly missed by all.

Lynn Kyle Ritter-Stuart

DELL RAPIDS, S.D.- Lynn Kyle Ritter-Stuart, 68, of Dell Rapids, S.D., died Thursday (April 29, 2010) at the Sanford Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D., following a lengthy illness.

A military graveside burial will be at 1 p.m. today at Fairview Cemetery in Earlville.

Kyle was born on April 11, 1942, in Waverly, the son of Norma Cain. He graduated from Earlville High School in 1959. He entered the Navy, serving on the USS Independence.

Kyle married Ruth Ann Kramer. Upon his discharge, Kyle worked as a implement salesman then as a technician for Eco Lab, both in Clear Lake.

Ruth Ann Ritter died on June 11, 1990. Kyle moved to Minnesota where he was a salesman for Plainview Dairy Supply. He then started his own dairy supply business, Kyle's I.B.A. He sold the business in 2006 and retired.
Kyle married Shirley Stuart on May 30, 1998.

Kyle enjoyed music, fishing and hunting and was a member of Pheasants Forever. He had a pilot's license and enjoyed flying model airplanes as well.
Kyle is survived by his wife, Shirley Stuart, of Dell Rapids, S.D.; two sons, Kyle (Stacey) Ritter of Belmond and Robert (Kim) Ritter of Clear Lake; two step sons, John (Holly) Wermager of Chaska, Minn., and Matthew (Allison) Wermager of Austin, Texas; four grandchildren; two brothers, George (Bonnie) Ritter of Freeport, Ill., and Tom (Dee) Ritter of Belle Plains; two sisters, Carol (Dale) Cafferty of Lake City and Caroline (Michael) Moriarity of Leland.

Kyle was preceded in death by his mother, Norma Cain Ritter Coulter, and his first wife, Ruth Ann Ritter.

Dale L. Cheney Sr.

MASON CITY - Dale L. Cheney Sr., 74, 834 Eighth St. N.E., Mason City, died Saturday May 1, 2010, at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday May 5, 2010, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, with the Rev. George Ady officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Dale was born on July 18, 1935, in Millersburg, Iowa, the son of Howard and Esther (Morrison) Cheney. He graduated from Manly High School in 1953. He served in the National Guard following high school.

Dale went to work for the Rock Island Railroad, retiring in 1983 after working for them for over twenty-nine years. While working for the railroad he served as local chairman of the United Transportation Union from 1974-1980.
Dale married Betty Murl on April 12, 1957, and to this union five children were born.

Dale was an avid reader, collector of many things, enjoyed playing cards, caring for his home, family and friends, taking his dog Tazz on walks and especially spending time with his grandchildren, attending all their activities and chauffeuring them around. He was an avid Democratic activist and participated in multiple caucuses and Democratic-based activities.
He was a member of The United Transportation Union.

Dale is survived by his wife, Betty Cheney, Mason City; four children, Dale (Angela) Cheney Jr., Mason City, Kelly (Gale) Mino, Martinez, Ga., John (Tammy) Cheney, Mason City, and Carol Cheney, Mason City; one sister, Karen Chase, Hopkins, Minn.; and eleven grandchildren: Kayce (Justin) Scott, Titus Usher, Desiree' Cheney, Emerald Cheney, Alexander Mino, Quinton Mino, Christian Mino, Hannah Cheney, Chloe Cheney, Dana Cheney and Jessica Mahaney.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Don Cheney; daughter, Barbara Boehmer; and his companion dog, Tazz.

Jeralynn Rae Haspany

CLEAR LAKE - Jeralynn Rae Haspany, 68, of Clear Lake, passed away Saturday (May 1, 2010) at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday May 5, 2010, at Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel Clear Lake, with the Rev. Will Hunsacker and the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be immediately following at Meservey Cemetery, Meservey. The family suggests any memorials be sent to the Susan G. Komen Foundation at KOMEN.ORG.

Jeralynn Rae Haspany, daughter of Albert and Ollie Pals, was born on Dec. 3, 1941. She attended the Meservey school system and graduated in 1960.
Jeralynn married David Haspany on Sept. 20, 1963. They briefly attended Chicago Bible School in 1961.

Throughout her life, she lived in a variety of places including Forest City, Clear Lake, New Hampton, North Washington, Charles City, and Bella Vista, Ark. Jeralynn moved back to Meservey in 1978.

Jeralynn enjoyed socializing with friends, especially her great friend Nelda Halvorson.

Jeralynn married Elmer Messelheiser on Dec. 11, 1991. She lived in Clear Lake up until her death.


Jeralynn will be missed by her family; daughters, Pam (Doug ) Kellogg, Beth (Brian) Cooley of Salem Oregon, Ginger (Thad) Sullivan of Portland Oregon. She is also survived by brothers, Nate Pals and wife, Marlys, Leonard Pals and wife, Wanda; and four grand children. Jerri is also survived by three step-children, Robert (Julie) Messelheiser Polk City, Dean (Becky) Messelheiser of Florida and Janet Messelheiser of Australia.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Norma Reisinger; her parents, and her husband, Elmer Messelheiser.

CLEAR LAKE - Jeralynn Rae Haspany, 68, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (May 1, 2010) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake, after a courageous battle with breast cancer.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday May 5, 2010, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. Clear Lake, with the Rev. Will Hunsacker and the Rev. Rodney Meester officiating. Burial will be immediately following at Meservey Cemetery, Meservey.

Eva M. Henning

LATIMER - Eva M. Henning, 93, of Latimer, passed away Sunday (May 2, 2010) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Funeral services for Eva Henning will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ, 204 E. South St., in Latimer. Pastor Charlotte White will officiate. Burial will take place in the Marion Center Cemetery north of Latimer.

Visitation for Eva Henning will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Tuesday May 4, 2010, at the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer and will continue from 10 a.m. until time of service on Wednesday at the church.

Eva Marjorie, the daughter of Frank and Nora Harlson Carpenter, was born on Dec. 13, 1916, in Thompson, Iowa. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Eva attended school in South Dakota where she graduated in 1934 from high school in Letcher. She attended and graduated from Augustana College in Sioux Falls. It was there that Eva received her South Dakota Teaching Certificate.

After moving to Iowa, Eva attended and graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City to obtain her Iowa Teaching Certificate. Eva's life-work was education. She was the diligent and innovative teacher so many children remember as their favorite.

Eva was united in marriage to Wayne Henning on April 16, 1944 at the St Paul's Lutheran Church in Latimer. To this four children were born: Jacquelyn, Susan, and the twins, Steve and Sally.

During her lifetime she belonged to many organizations and gave her best in all phases of offices and work. Eva belonged to the Hansen-Have American Legion Auxiliary Post No.658 of Latimer, Franklin General Hospital Auxiliary, Latimer Parks Society, Koffee Klub, and Over Sixties Club.

Eva was an active member of the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Latimer. She served on the Christian Board of Education, Flower Committee, Kitchen Committee, as well as numerous other capacities. Eva also worked as a longtime receptionist for the Willim Funeral Home in Latimer.

Eva is survived by her children, Jacquie Murphy and husband Mike of Newton: Susan DeBour and husband, Randy of Latimer: Steve and wife, Dawn of Latimer: Sally Eicher of Cedar Rapids; grandchildren, Shelly and Brad Worthington: Brian and Shanda Murphy: Cara and Brian Folkerts: Elizabeth and Eric Podolan: Tyler DeBour: Casey Henning: Clint and Christie Henning: Andy and Sarah Eicher; 10 great-grandchildren; sister, Pearl Wolf, of Latimer; in-laws, Helen Carpenter of Hampton: Owen and Juanita Henning of Marco Island, Fla., and numerous other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Wayne in 2008; three brothers and one sister.

Dale D. "Pete" Kubicek

OSAGE - Dale D. (Pete) Kubicek, 83, of Osage, passed away Saturday (May 1, 2010) at the Faith Lutheran Home. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Pete was the son of John and Mary Kubicek. He was born on March 13, 1927 in McIntire, Iowa. He joined the Marines at the age of 17 and served two years for our country during World War II.

On April, 15, 1950, Pete was united in marriage to Dona Green at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. To this union, three children were born.

In 1954 Pete started a drywall and painting business that he operated until his retirement in 1992.

He enjoyed collecting arrowheads, gardening, hunting mushrooms, jigsaw puzzles, and spending time with family.

Dale is survived by his wife, Dona; his children, Clay (Jeanne) Kubicek of Joplin, Mo., and Clare (Richard) Smith of Clovis, Calif.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and his sister, Olive Ellis, of Charles City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents,John and Mary Kubicek; a son, Kent, three brothers, and a sister.

Peggy Diana Nelson

CLEAR LAKE - Peggy Diana Nelson, 59, of Clear Lake, passed Sunday (May 2, 2010) of natural causes.

Funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Following the service, interment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be a half hour before the service.
Peggy was born on Jan. 14, 1951, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, the daughter of Perry and Vanna (Meyer) Nelson. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1969 and then attended North Iowa Area Community College and the University of Northern Iowa.

Peggy worked at various jobs within the area. She enjoyed helping others, spending time with family and friends, walking her dog Diago and the outdoors.

She is survived, loved, and missed by her parents, Perry and Vanna Nelson, of Hanlontown; her brother, Terry Nelson and sister-in-law, Debbie Nelson of Clear Lake; their children, niece, Staci Andrea and husband, Dustin, and Peggy's great-nieces Skylar and Paige Andrea; also niece, Angie Moore and husband, Taylor, and Peggy's great-nephew Dylan; also survived by her sister Debra Rungee And brother-in-law, Samuel Rungee of Urbandale, along with nephew Steven Rungee and wife, Ashley, with great-niece, Kahlynn of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, and nephew Tony Rungee of Ankeny, along with several aunts, uncles and cousins, and special friend, Denny Simmers.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Opal and James Meyer and Perry and Sarah Nelson.

Aristotel J. Pappelis

BOCA RATON, Fla. -Aristotel J. Pappelis, a cell biologist and professor emeritus at Southern Illinois University-Carbondale, died on May 1, 2010, at home in Boca Raton, Fla.

Dr. Pappelis was an international authority on corn and sorghum diseases and on the origin of life.

Dr. Pappelis was born in Cloquet, Minn., on May 25, 1928 to John and Katherine (Hodgis) Pappelis. On Feb. 11, 1951, he married Kathryn Zahariades in Mason City, Iowa.
Dr. Pappelis received his bachelor's degree from Wisconsin State College-Superior, Wis., in 1951 (chemistry). He then joined the U.S. Air Force, serving as a training officer at Maxwell Air Force Base in Alabama during the Korean War. In 1953, he was a ground observer during atomic weapons tactical warfare training exercises with marines at Camp Desert Rock, Nev.

He wrote a biochemical defense plan for the military that was still in use during Operation Desert Storm. He was honorably discharged in 1955 as a first lieutenant.

Dr. Pappelis received his doctoral degree (Ph.D.) in plant physiology at Iowa State University in 1957. He immediately joined the staff at the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Miami, Fla., as a research plant physiologist studying the market quality of tropical fruits and vegetables. Then, from 1959 to 1960, he taught plant pathology at Western Illinois University. From 1960 until his retirement in 2003, Dr. Pappelis taught biology, plant pathology, cell biology and origin of life at Southern Illinois University.

By 1968, Dr. Pappelis was an international authority on stalk rot responses in corn and sorghum. In the 1980s and 1990s, Dr. Pappelis was further lauded for his work on cell aging and death, and the origin of life on Earth. Dr. Pappelis gave presentations to the American Chemical Society (1993 and 1995), the Oparin Centennial symposia (Moscow, Russia, and Trieste, Italy, 1994) and the C. Ponnamperuma Memorial (Trieste, Italy, 1995).
He was associate editor for Ethnobotanical Leaflets, a Web journal published by SIU-C.

Dr. Pappelis published more than 200 articles in professional science journals. "In addition to his research and teaching, he was a serious philosopher," said Dr. Donald Ugent, a good friend and colleague from SIU-C. "He lived up to his name, 'Aristotel.' "

Dr. Pappelis is survived by his wife, Kathryn, a son, Gus (Jerre Ann) Pappelis, of Portland, Ore.; and daughters, Tina (Matthew) Franklin of Springfield, Ill. and Joanne (Jack) Antoniou Weingold of Boca Raton, Fla.; and seven grandchildren, Eleni and Nicole Pappelis, Mark and Kelly Franklin, and Stephanie, Alexia and Dean Antoniou.

Murvin O. Anderson

ELKTON, Minn. -Murvin O. Anderson, of rural Elkton, Minn., passed away Saturday (May 1, 2010) at the Grand Meadow Health Care Center at the age of 89.

He was born to William and Ella Anderson near Forest City, Iowa, on Nov. 3, 1920. He received his education at the country school in Ellington Township near the family farm.

In 1949 Murvin married Vern Hartman and the couple started their family on a farm near his father's farm east of Forest City. Later they would farm near Dunnell, Minn., and Peterson, Minn.
 
In the mid-1970s he went into business as a painting contractor along with his oldest son, Craig. Murvin never did retire from that business and was still the "boss" in later life even though he wasn't able to work.

He was always a farmer at heart. His small acreage overlooked the farmland in the area and he did his part by tilling his big garden and planting strawberry beds, vegetables and fruit trees.

Verna died in 1995 and two years later he married Verna Eames of Sun City West, Ariz. They enjoyed a few years together living in Arizona in the winter and Minnesota in the summer. His second wife died in 2009.

Murvin is survived by his two sons, Craig of Elkton, Minn., and William (Larisa) of Baxter, Minn.; two daughters, Jean (Mark) Eksuzian of Victoria, Minn., and Kristi (Gene) Frohling of Rowan, Iowa; a sister, Ardis Mote of Utica, Minn.; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents and his wives.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010, at the Hindt Funeral Home in Grand Meadow, Minn. A private burial will take place at a later date at the Lincoln Township Cemetery near Doliver, Iowa.

Ada Lorraine Carlson

MASON CITY - Ada Lorraine Carlson, 84, of Mason City died Dec. 21, 2009, while vacationing in Tempe, Arizona.

Ada Lorraine was born March 27, 1925, in Lake Mills.

She is survived by two children, Carolyn Wilson of California and Richard Auck of Arizona, and five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 8, 2010, at the Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with Dan Gerrietts officiating. A luncheon will follow at the Moose Lodge.

Hazel King

MASON CITY - Hazel (Eenhuis) King, 89, of Mason City died Monday (May 3, 2010) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City. Officiating the service will be Pastors Don Hochmuth and James Grabitske of the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Hazel was born on April 7, 1921, in Northwood, Iowa, the daughter of William and Hazel Estes. She graduated from Hamilton Community College. Hazel had lived in Hayfield and Kanawha before finally settling in Mason City in 1961.
 
Following the death of her first husband, Frank Eenhuis, she was united in marriage to Joseph King on February 20, 1970 at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Mason City.

Hazel had cooked at Country House, cleaned at J.C. Penny and was a bookkeeper for Dunn, Inc. and High Cross Hatchery.

Hazel was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, where she was also a member of the Ladies Aid.

She looked forward to meeting with her friends for breakfast and enjoyed spending time with her friends and family. She especially loved playing Yahtzee with the kids. She also quilted and crocheted in her free time as well as watching the birds and butterflies.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Frank Eenhuis; son, Dennis Eenhuis; grandchildren, Pattie and Willie King; brother, Drexell Estes; son-in-law, Charlie Hubacher; brother-in-law, Leo King Jr.; father-in-law, Leo King; and all of her in-laws in the Eenhuis family.

Those left to cherish her memory include her husband, Joseph; children, Karen Hubacher of Mason City, Bill (Steph) King of Mason City, Teresa (Steve) Harms of Hampton, Nancy (Tim) Young of Mason City, Tom (Phyllis) King of Dows, Nancy Jo Rodriguez of Austin, Texas, and Joey (Jessica) King of Jacksonville, N.C.; 24 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.

Russel V. Meier

Russel V. Meier, 95, of the Bethany Home in Dubuque died on Feb. 3, 2010, at the Bethany Home.

Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 8, at the Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City. Military rites will be accorded by the Garner Iowa VFW.

He was born on Nov. 2, 1914, in Benton, Wis., the son of John and Matilda (Sommer) Meier. He married Rosina Marie Detleth and she preceded him in death.

He worked in construction for many years and was last working for Winnebago Industries in Forrest City, Iowa, until his retirement.

He is a U.S. Army veteran serving during WWII, and is a member of the Garner VFW.

He is survived by nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, brothers, Omar and Urban, and sisters, Agnes, Helen and Ruth.

Alice Murphy

NORA SPRINGS - Alice Murphy died Sunday (May 2, 2010) at her home in Nora Springs surrounded by her loving family after a short courageous battle with cancer. She was 56 years of age.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 6, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Riceville. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Riceville.

Friends may call from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday (today) at the Conway Funeral Home in Riceville where there will be a parish vigil service at 6 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday from 9:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. at the funeral home.

Alice May Murphy was born in Riceville, Iowa, on May 12, 1953, the daughter of Eugene and Mavis (Prochaska) Murphy. She received her special education in Riceville, Cresco and Osage. Alice was a special person who was inseparable from her sister and her mother.
 
She enjoyed crafts and gardening, both flowers and produce. Alice won many blue ribbons for her flowers and canned the produce from her garden. She loved to play cards, especially 500, and she enjoyed people and was a foster mother to her nieces, nephews and all of the children who grew to love her. She worked for a period of time at Affordables in Mason City.
In later years, she became the cook for the family. Alice was blessed and will be missed by many.

Alice is survived by her mother, Mavis, of Nora Springs; three sisters: Linda (Richard) Ott of Nora Springs, Ann (Dean) Ott of Marble Rock and Lorie Murphy, of Nora Springs; and two nieces, three nephews, four great-nieces and four great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1996 and a brother, Eugene Jr.

Lucas John Seebeck

CLEAR LAKE - Lucas John Seebeck, 27, of North Liberty, Iowa, died suddenly of a heart attack on Sunday (May 2, 2010) at home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church, 340 20th St. S.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Jack Vanden Heuvel officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and then one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Lucas John Seebeck Memorial Fund.
Lucas was born July 12, 1982, in Britt, Iowa, the son of Charles and Tina (Mulhern) Seebeck. He attended school in Wesley and then moved to Clear Lake where he graduated from Clear Lake High School in 2000.
Following high school he moved to Summit County in Colorado, where he built log homes. He enjoyed hiking and snowboarding in the mountains. He later moved back to Iowa to do construction so he could be closer to his daughter and family.

His favorite pastime was playing basketball, volleyball and spending time with his family and friends. Lucas made friends everywhere he went and touched many lives. He lived every day to the fullest.

He is survived by his father, Chuck (Gail) Seebeck, Clear Lake, Iowa; his mother, Tina M. (Robert) Hudspeth, Garner, Iowa; daughter Emma Clabaugh, Marion, Iowa; siblings, Dani (Aaron) Sauerbrei, Readlyn, Iowa, Samantha Peterson, Des Moines, Iowa, Michael Peterson, Clear Lake, Iowa, Tara (Dave) Rochleau, Whittemore, Iowa, Tim (Melissa) Hudspeth, Bouton, Iowa, and Todd Hudspeth, Storm Lake, Iowa; maternal grandmother, Alice Mulhern, Mason City, Iowa; several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins; and his beloved dog Duke.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Fred Mulhern, and paternal grandparents, Charles and Marian Seebeck.

Emma Elizabeth Teeter

Memorial services for Emma Elizabeth Teeter, 94, Lawrence, Kansas, will be held at a later date in La Porte City, Iowa, with inurnment in West View Cemetery.

Mrs. Teeter died May 3, 2010, at Pioneer Ridge Nursing Facility, Lawrence, Kansas.

She was born Nov. 11, 1915, in Clear Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Christian and Martha Salling Larsen, both natives of Denmark. She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1934, a member of the National Honor Society.
She married Lt. Cecil G. Teeter on June 23, 1942, at First Methodist Church in West Palm Beach, Fla. He survives of the home.

Mrs. Teeter worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company in Mason City and retired in 1945 to rejoin her husband returning from World War II. She later worked part- time as a bookkeeper for a building contractor and a country club in the Kansas City area.

She was a member of Village Presbyterian Church and its Women's Circle while living in Prairie Village, Kan. She was a Cub Scout den mother and also assisted with the Girl Scouts.

After a granddaughter was diagnosed with Celiac-Sprue in 1982, she founded the Celiac-Sprue Association of Greater Kansas City and assisted the national chapters in Des Moines, Omaha and Phoenix. After 13 years of residence in Mesa, Ariz., she moved to Lawrence, Kan. with her husband in July 2000.
Survivors include her husband, Cecil G. Teeter of Lawrence, Kan.; a son, Steven R. Teeter (Sharon), Campbell, Calif.; two daughters, Marilyn M. Teeter, Lawrence, and Mrs. Patricia A. Zara (George A.), Blythewood, S.C.; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ann Larsen, Clear Lake, Iowa; and 17 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Mrs. Marie Kogan; a brother, Carl E. Larsen; and a granddaughter.

Alphia E. Walker

MASON CITY - Alphia E. Walker, 88, of 509 S. Adams Ave., died Monday (May 3, 2010) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held for Alphia at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 6, 2010, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Keith Scott officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today, Wednesday, May 5, 2010, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Alphia Albright was born Dec. 24, 1921, in Wright County, the daughter of Ara and Jane (Reikens) Albright. She attended Belmond and Clear Lake Schools and Mason City Beauty School.

Alphia was united in marriage to Lewis "Bud" Walker on March 5, 1949; to this union three children were born. Alphia and Lewis owned and operated the Westside Tavern in Nora Springs until their retirement.

Alphia enjoyed playing cards, cooking, canning and shopping. Alphia was a great caregiver. She loved spending time with her granddaughter, Shannon, whom she raised, and her great-grandchildren. When she wasn't taking care of her family Alphia spent her time with her Boston terrier, Scrappy; they were always together! She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Mason City.

Alphia is survived by her son, Larry Walker, Mason City; granddaughter Shannon (Jason) Solberg, Mason City; great-grandchildren, Kaleb and Branden Solberg; sister Neva Lynch, Mason City; sisters-in-law, Helen Albright and Joyce Johansen; along with several nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.

Alphia is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lewis "Bud"; two sons, Harold Walker and one infant son; brothers Lloyd Albright and Fred (Betty) Albright; and sisters Viola and Dorothy Albright and Lavon (Ted) Johnson.
