MASON CITY - Kathryn A. Field, 60, of Mason City died Tuesday (March 24, 2009) at the Manly Care Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Pastor Tom Healey, Hospice of North Iowa chaplain, officiating.

There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Kathryn Field memorial fund in care of the family.

Holland, Gary Lee  
 
Gary Lee Holland, 57, passed away on Wednesday (March 18, 2009), at his home in Waterloo, of an apparent heart attack.

He was born on Dec. 22, 1951, in Denver, Colo., the son of Francis and Lora (Lohr) Holland. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1970. He graduated with honors from the University of Northern Iowa in 1999 with a bachelor of arts degree in general industry and technology and in 2001 with a master of arts in industrial technology.

After leaving Mason City, he lived and worked in New Orleans, La., and in Waterloo. His fields of expertise were manufacturing, industry equipment design and repair, metal fabrication and repair and construction management.

Gary was a skilled wood and metal craftsman. He was an excellent cook, auto mechanic and computer technician. He was a knowledgeable woodsman: enjoying scouting, camping, fishing and canoeing. In 1981, he and a friend piloted a pontoon boat down the Mississippi River from Saint Paul, Minn., to New Orleans. He remained in New Orleans working in manufacturing and ship repair for ten years before moving back to Iowa.

Gary was an honest and generous man who was always willing to lend a helping hand. He enjoyed spending time with his family and close friends.

He is survived by his parents, Francis and Lora Holland (Mason City); a brother, John (Michelle) Holland (Cedar Falls); sisters, Chris (Ron) Nelson (Waverly) and Diane (Tim) Walrod (Hanlontown); nieces, Alissa and Angie Gomez, Alanna Lloyd, Jami Campbell, Brooke and Rachel Clark; nephews, Dan Lloyd and Evan Campbell; a great- niece, Alexia Gomez; special friends, Ralph Smith and Jan Kiel; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by an infant sister, Linda Holland; his grandparents, Carl and Minnie Holland, Hazel and John Lohr; and a brother-in-law, Ray Gomez.

After cremation, a memorial service will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 28, at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with a lunch to follow.

Memorials may be directed to Winnebago BSA Council or Wesley United Methodist Church.

HAMPTON - Ruth A. Johnson, 90, of Hampton died Tuesday (March 24, 2009) at the Franklin General Hospital Nursing Facility in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Hampton with the Rev. Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

MASON CITY - Ronald E. Krutsinger, 68, of Mason City died Tuesday (March 24, 2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, March 27, at the First Assembly of God Church, 1301 N. Carolina Ave., with Pastor Clyde Harvey officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 26, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. Memorials may be directed to the Ron Krutsinger memorial fund in care of the family.

Stearns, William F.  
 
OSAGE - William F. Stearns, age 97, of Iowa City and formerly of Osage, died Monday (March 23, 2009) at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 27, at the United Church of Christ in Osage with Pastor Ruth Moerdyk officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Mr. Stearns was born in Osage on Aug. 10, 1911, the son of Fred and Zadie (Tupper) Stearns. He graduated from Osage High School in 1927. He graduated from Iowa State University in ceramics engineering and was a manager of the wrestling team and member of Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity.

He moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., in 1935. On March 28, 1936, he married Leora Cornell in Grand Rapids.

His company, Kelvinator Corp., began producing armor plate during World War II. He later worked for A.B. Stoves, in Battle Creek, Mich., producing airplane parts for the war effort. In 1949, he moved to Osage, becoming a partner in Burns Insurance Agency. A year later, its name was changed to Stearns Insurance Agency, and he became president of the Home Savings and Loan Association. He was president of the Iowa Savings and Loan League in 1965-66. Mr. Stearns retired in 1976. In 2002, he moved to Iowa City to live with his daughter, Anne Tanner.

Mr. Stearns was active in the United Church of Christ in Osage and the Congregational Church of Christ in Iowa City. He belonged to the Rotary Club and Masonic organizations. He also helped to establish Hamlin Garland Homes and was instrumental in the effort to build the new Osage Library. For many years he was an active volunteer for the American Red Cross, and he enjoyed gardening and golfing at Sunny Brae Golf Club.

Mr. Stearns is survived by his daughter, Anne Tanner of Iowa City; a son, Frederic William (Linda) Stearns, Tulsa, Okla; two granddaughters, Gillian Lind Stearns of Seattle, Wash., and Victoria Cornell Stearns of New York City; a sister, Helen French of Stacyville; and three nieces, Nan (Jerry) Danforth of Cedar Rapids, Jean (Lars) Larson of Fairfax, Va., and Sally (Bob) Miller of New Haven.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Leora Stearns, on May 11, 1982; two sisters, Mazie Stearns and Bee Bradford; and a brother, Dr. Frederic T. Stearns.

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Christie Lee Sticha, 34, of St. Paul, Minn., died Saturday, (March 21, 2009) in Minneapolis.

She is survived by her mom, Debbie Clemetson; dad, Delavan Shannon (special friend Carolyn Bang); two sons, Michael and Cody (father Mike); sister, Stacey Sinclair; niece, Peyton Sinclair; special uncles, Kenny and Brian; grandmother, Ardella Shannon; grandparents, Lyle and Anita Eide; godmother "special aunt," Nancy Johnson; aunts, Christina Peterson, Mary (Robert) Marshall, Margaret (Curtis) Blake, July (Greg) Gorvin, Michele (Jim) Leqve and Darla (Dale) Madsen; uncles, Pat (Marti) Shannon, Tony (Becky) Shannon and Bill (Lori) Shannon.

Christie was preceded in death by her beloved twins, Emma Jane and Sophie Mae (1/29/09); grandfathers, W.P. Shannon and Ken Badker; and cousin, Chad Peterson.

A time of fellowship will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 28, followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m. at Johnson-Peterson Funeral Home, 612 S. Smith Ave., St. Paul, Minn. There will be a private family interment later.

Urich, Rudy J.  
 
GARNER - Rudy J. Urich, 92, of Garner died Tuesday (March 24, 2009) at Concord Care Center in Garner.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with Father Brian Dellaert officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Duncan.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church in Duncan with a Catholic Workman rosary at 5 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Rudy John Urich, the son of Joseph and Anastacia (Kudej) Urich, was born April 17, 1916, on a farm northwest of Garner. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. Rudy graduated from Hayfield Consolidated School in 1936 where he was active in sports and school activities. On Sept. 12, 1938, he married Dorothy Brcka at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. They made their home on the family farm northwest of Garner where they raised their family and farmed.

In 1961, Rudy was elected county treasurer, a position he held for the next 29 years. During his terms in office he became involved in state and national politics. In 1980, he was elected as president of the National Association of County Treasurers and Finance Officers and was presented a lifetime honorary membership. After leaving office, he was employed as a courier for Clear Lake Bank and Trust in Garner. In 2001, Rudy and Dorothy moved into Garner. He enjoyed playing cards and spending time on his computer.

He was a lifelong member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, serving on the building board after the destruction of the church by a tornado and years later as a volunteer member of the board for renovating and decorating the church for its 100th year celebration. He belonged to the Catholic Workman FCSLA w51 for more than 60 years serving as president of the local chapter and as a trustee for the care and maintenance of the community hall and the Garner Lions Club serving as past president and secretary-treasurer for two local district governors. He received the Melvin Jones Fellow Award from Lions International and many achievement and membership awards from the local club.

Rudy was active in his community serving as a 4-H leader, president of the Hancock County Extension Council, president of the Hayfield School Board and was active in Farm Bureau and the rural development board. He also was on the board of directors and past chairman of the Elderbridge Agency on Aging.

Rudy is survived by his wife, Dorothy, of Garner; four children, Roger Urich of Garner, Robert (Billie) Urich of Indianola, Gerald Urich of Des Moines and Carmen Urich of Fort Collins, Colo.; four grandchildren, Mike (Jill) Urich and their daughter, Melody, Matt (Shirley) Urich, Julie Urich and Jennifer (Lee) Freeman and their children, Zachary, Sarah and Seth.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Estella Basart and Frances Brozik; and brother Elmer Urich.

Wasicek, Donald Mark  
 
MASON CITY - Donald Mark Wasicek, 56, of Mason City, died Monday (March 23, 2009) at his home.

A memorial service for Don will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 27, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 W., Mason City, with military graveside honors conducted by members of the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time Friday at the chapel.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Robin Espinosa in his honor.

Donald Mark Wasicek was born on Sept. 5, 1952, in Mason City, the son of Fritz and Lorraine Wasicek. Don attended and received his education in the Mason City Community Schools, graduating from Mason City High School. Don was inducted into the Air Force on June 19, 1975, in Des Moines and was a Vietnam-era veteran and was honorably discharged as a sergeant on Aug. 30, 1977, at Pope Air Force Base in Fayetteville, N.C.

After his honorable discharge, Don worked for a number of years in the family business at Mason City Glass Co. Don also worked for Jennings Glass Co. in Mason City, Jennings Paint and Decorating in Clear Lake, Meintz Construction Co. in Clear Lake, and had to retire because of ill health.

Don loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, walking, and hunting mushrooms with his daughter, Francesca.

Those left to cherish his memory are his long time girlfriend, Robin Espinosa of Mason City; his daughters, Kelli Wasicek and special friend Shane Wagner, of Fertile, Jennifer Wasicek of Forest City and Francesca Wasicek of Mason City; four grandchildren, Zackary and Elijah Wagner, Kaleb Phelps and Kylee Bruns; two brothers, Dennis (Marge) Wasicek of Mason City and Damon (Jeanette) Wasicek of Mason City; two nieces, Kim Wasicek of Mason City and Christie of Mason City; and a nephew, Tony Wasicek of Mason City, as well as other extended relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and a nephew, David Wasicek.

Gregson, Richard "Rich"  
 
Richard "Rich" Gregson born Nov. 11, 1936, in Corwith, died peacefully Tuesday (March 24, 2009).
Rich served his country honorably in the U.S. Air Force for 23 years, traveling all over the world, including England, Thailand and the Philippines. He was fortunate to be able to have his family with him for most of his military service.
After retiring from the Air Force he started another career with Glendale Samaritan Hospital, working in plant operations. He then moved with them to Thunderbird Samaritan. He retired in October 2004 after 26 years of service to the hospital.
He married his wife Shirley on May 6, 1956, and they enjoyed nearly 53 years together. He loved his sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating and his painting.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his sons, David (Mary), and Doug (Laura); three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and was getting ready to greet a fourth great-grandchild.
A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, April 3, in the Chapel at Thunderbird Medical Center, 5555 W. Thunderbird Road, Glendale, AZ 85306.

HOWARD, S.D. - Genora Gerdine Kopps, 99, of Howard, S.D., formerly of Carthage, S.D., and Mason City, died Tuesday (March 24, 2009) at the Good Samaritan Society, Howard, S.D.
Genora Gerdine Jensen was born April 25, 1909, at McCallsburg, Iowa, to Edward and Lizzie (Erickson) Jensen. As a young child she moved to the Carthage, S.D., area where she was raised and attended school. Genora worked as a housekeeper and later took care of her mother until her death.
After her mother's death she moved to Mason City, Iowa, and worked at Armour and Co. in Mason City. Genora met the love of her life while working on the line and was united in marriage to Oswald Kopps on Feb. 23, 1957.
Genora enjoyed country rides, dining out, cooking Norwegian dishes and fishing with her husband Ozzie, who passed away on July 31, 1982.
Genora remained in Mason City until moving to Whispering Winds Assisted Living Center, Howard. S.D., in October of 2003. Genora became a resident of the Good Samaritan Society, Howard in 2008.
Survivors include her nieces and nephew, Leola (Bob) Edens, of Bonner Springs, Kan.; Harlan (Cleo) Erickson, of Bashor, Kan.; Elaine Nelson and Phylis (Richard) Stevens both of Howard, S.D.; Jenora Jane (Ken) Breitbach of Port Angeles, Wash.; Glenna Horton of Mitchell, S.D.; and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
Genora was preceded in death by her parents, husband and several brothers and sisters.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Monday, March 30, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, Howard, S.D. with burial at a later date in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services and the church.

MASON CITY -Ronald E. Krutsinger, 68, of Mason City, died Tuesday (March 24, 2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. today, Friday, March, 27, at the First Assembly of God Church, 1301 N. Carolina Ave., with Pastor Clyde Harvey officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery in Floyd.

Ron was born Aug. 10, 1940, in Iowa City, the son of Charles Howard and Evelyn (Larsen) Krutsinger. He attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 1958.
He was married to Shirley Mills on Dec. 9, 1960, in Floyd. After marriage, they moved to Lima, N.Y., where Ron attended Elim Bible Institute for four years. After finishing school, they moved to Starville, Mich., where he served as an assistant pastor for three years. They moved to Forest City in 1971 and started working for Winnebago Industries where he worked until his retirement in 1998. He also worked for Harvey Johnson on the farm on a part-time basis.
After retirement, Shirley and Ron moved to Stewartville, Minn., where they lived and worked at the Ironwood Springs Christian Ranch for two-and-a-half years, until moving to Mason City.
Ron drove a school bus for the Clear Lake School District for the last eight years, which he thoroughly enjoyed; he also delivered parts for Advanced Auto in Mason City. Ron and Shirley also owned and operated New Beginnings Consignment Shoppe in Mason City.
Ron was a very active member of the First Assembly of God Church, where he played bass guitar on the worship team, served on the church board and also was a part of the Men's Ministries.
He enjoyed music, especially singing. Family was very important to him, and he enjoyed the time he spent with them.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Shirley, of Mason City; children, David Krutsinger, of Bullhead City, Ariz., Diane Wyant and husband, Curtis, of Forest City, James Krutsinger and wife, Lori, of Forest City, and Joel Krutsinger and wife, Darla, of Stewartville, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one stepgreat-grandchild; sister, Alberta Loveless, of Mason City; brothers, Richard Krutsinger and wife Harriet, of Clear Lake, Gail Krutsinger, of Mason City, and Don Krutsinger, of St. Paul, Minn.; mother, Evelyn Rensink, of Mason City; stepsister, Julie Goodling and husband, Al, of Mason City, and many nieces and nephews.
Ron was preceded in death by his father, Charles Howard; stepfather, Roy Rensink; and stepsister, Mary Rensink.

DES MOINES - Robert H.W. Plagge, 88, died Saturday (March 21, 2009) at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines following a brief illness.
Services will be 3 p.m. Monday, March 30, 2009, at Westover Funeral Home, 6337 Hickman Road, Des Moines. Burial will follow at the Glendale Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Monday at Westover Funeral Home.
Robert was born March 19, 1921, in Latimer, to Fred C. and Amanda Plagge. He graduated from Alexander High School. He then attended Luther College until his enlistment in the Army Air Corps in 1942 during World War II.
He served his country as a 1st Lt. B4 bomber pilot with tours in most of Europe. On his return, he graduated from Iowa State University.
He married Letha Kent on March 31, 1947, divorcing in 1972. Settling in Cedar Falls with the Federal Land Bank for 28 years, he married Mary Virginia Russell in 1982, making their home in Des Moines where he was with Iowa Realty.
Robert is survived by his wife, Mary Virginia; children, Paula van Deest (Tom), of Cedar Rapids, Mari Plagge (Charles Rabkin), of Potomac, Md., Bob Plagge, of Atkin, Minn., and Kirk Plagge (Sue), of Boise, Idaho; grandchildren, Sarah van Deest, Leah, Alexander and Martha Rabkin, Amanda, Emma and Connor Plagge.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Dale; sister, Bernice Stadtlander; grandson, Benjamin; and stepdaughter, Mary Payne.
The family would like to thank doctors, nurses and staff at Iowa Methodist and Genesis Health Center for all the wonderful attention and care Bob was given.

MASON CITY - Albert Polacek, 87, of Mason City, passed away Wednesday (March 25, 2009) at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.
A memorial service will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28, 2009, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., in Mason City with Pastor Sid Bohls officiating. Committal with military honors will follow in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
A visitation will be held at the church Fellowship Hall following the service.

Albert was born on June 25, 1921, in Mason City, the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (Skaitka) Polacek. As a youth, he lived in Garner for a short time before moving back to Mason City. After graduating from Mason City High School in 1939, he enlisted in the Army. He served during World War II as a staff sergeant, receiving the bronze star.
On June 27, 1948, he was united in marriage to Lorraine Peterson in Mason City. Albert worked for the Mason City/Clear Lake Railroad as a supervisor for 27 years. He was then employed at AMPI for six years. He retired from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in 1987 after 13 years as a maintenance supervisor.
Albert was a lifetime member of the VFW, a member of the American Legion, and of the St. Paul Lutheran Church. He also volunteered in the surgical waiting room at Mercy Hospital.
Albert enjoyed many hobbies; he was an avid sports fan, he loved buying and selling used cars, and he collected model trains and began collecting model cars. He also loved woodworking, building many birdhouses in his spare time. Albert always looked forward to driving down to Pro's for coffee with the guys.
Those left to honor his memory include his wife, Lorraine; children, Diane (Bob) Peterson, of Cordova, Tenn., and Bruce Polacek, of Atlanta, Ga.; granddaughters, Nicole Peterson, Amy (Jimmy) Payne and Jennifer (Wade) Waddell; great-grandchildren, Maddison and Adam Waddell, and Connor Payne; special friend and caregiver, Mary Castino; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Steven, John and Sam Vician; and sisters, Betty Anderson, Julia Wasicile and Mildred Stamou.

FARIBAULT, Minn. -Naomi R. Swyter, 85, long-time resident of Mason City, and recently of Faribault, Minn., died Monday (March 23, 2009) at Homestead Hospice in Owatonna, Minn.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 8, 2009, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave, in Mason City, with the Rev. Jo Frahm Watkins officiating. Inurnment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.
Naomi (Ludeman) Swyter was born Nov. 14, 1923, in Mason City, daughter of Richard and Lela (Yost) Ludeman. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1941 and attended Mason City Junior College before moving to Chicago to work during the war years.
Naomi was undoubtedly an exemplary member of "The Greatest Generation", enduring the Great Depression during her youth and the war years as a young adult. She led her entire life guided by the principles of honesty, loyalty, faith, patriotism, thrift, hard work, and prudence.
Naomi Ludeman married Maynard H. Swyter on June 3, 1950, in Mason City. She helped support her family by working for various companies in Mason City, Sioux Falls, and Minneapolis.
She was an active and faithful member of the First United Methodist Church congregation and church circle. Naomi enjoyed her family and friends with all her heart.
Her passions included cooking, sewing, music, and dancing with her husband. She was there when needed, always with a smile and kind words of encouragement.
Naomi is survived by her children: David Swyter and wife, Suzanne of Reading, Mass., James Swyter and wife Rita residing in Jakarta, Indonesia, Lisa Wagner and husband, Joel Carlson of Faribault, Minn.; six grandchildren: Tom, Hailey ,Harrison, Taylor, Kelsey and Nicholas; one sister: Maxine Cearley, of Claremont, Calif.
Naomi was preceded in death by her loving husband Maynard in 2000; her parents; and her siblings, Paul Ludeman, Carol Basgall, and Lois Dyke.

ANTHON - Alice Lathrop Bruce, 78, died Wednesday (March 25, 2009) at St. Luke's Medical Center in Sioux City.
A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. today, Saturday, March 28, at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon, with Pastor Vickie Steffes officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service with the family present.
Alice Lathrop Bruce was born May 3, 1930, in Eureka, Ill., to Griff and Dorothy (Clark) Lathrop. She graduated in 1948 from Eureka High school and then attended Eureka College studying speech. She excelled in drama, set design and debate and was a member of the Delta Zeta sorority.
She married John William Bruce on Nov. 2, 1951, in Eureka, Ill. To this union four children were born. They lived throughout the Midwest as John's job was in agricultural machinery. She was a full-time homemaker until 1967 ,when she began work as a bookkeeper for various companies.
In 1975, the family moved to Spencer where Alice began to do volunteer work for the United Way and American Red Cross. This lead to an eventual position in Mason City as the executive director of the American Red Cross for North Central Iowa, a position she held until retirement.
In 1998, she moved to Albuquerque, N.M. During her time in Albuquerque, she volunteered six days a week with the Veterans Hospital, the Museum of Natural History and Science and various organizations. She belonged to St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Albuquerque and treasured her involvement as a "Daughter of the King."
Alice Battled Alzheimer's for several years, quietly and bravely. By June 2008, her health had dictated a change to her relentless work ethic, leading her back to Iowa to live with her daughter until her sudden death.
Alice devoted her life to the Episcopal Church, public service as a volunteer, mentor and example for all those who new and loved her.
She enjoyed vegetable gardening, flowers, house plants, photography and possessed a passion for reading, especially westerns.
She is survived by her children, Luann Wolfe and husband, Michael, of Albuquerque, N.M., Dianna Isder and her husband, John, of Ocheydan, Suann Stines of Anthon, and her only son, Andrew Bruce and his wife, Wanda, of Sun City Calif.; her sister, Amylu Gioletti, of Pontiac, Ill.; and her former husband, John Bruce of Spencer; six grandchildren, Emily Urban Childs of Amesbury Mass., Aaron Urban of Deadwood, S.D., Talene Curry of LeMars, Calin Curry of Estherville, Sam Svihl of Spirit Lake, and Allison Stines of Anthon; six great-grandchildren, Brett, Cale, Karley, Jayden, Delainey and Gavyn.
She is preceded in death by both of her parents, Griff and Dorothy Lathrop; a sister, Ann Doran, of Peoria Ill.; and her mother and father-in- law, Aley and Stewart Bruce.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to either the Veteran's Hospital or the American Red Cross.

Slepicka, con-celebrating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City, where full military honors will be conducted by members of Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.

Robert James Douglas was born Aug. 4, 1925, at Manly, a son of Jake and Dorothy (Shannon) Douglas. He was united in marriage to Kathryn Makris on Feb. 9, 1952, at Holy Family Catholic Church.
Bob attended school at Manly and Holy Family Catholic School, Mason City. He was a 1943 graduate of Holy Family Catholic High School, Mason City. He served in the Navy and was a 1947 graduate of the University of Virginia, earning a bachelor of arts degree in business.
Following his discharge from the Navy, Bob returned to Mason City and joined his father at Douglas Insurance, where he worked for 40 plus years. He served in the Naval Reserve for 20 years.
Bob was chairman of the Cerro Gordo County Democratic Party, commander of AmVets, president of the Pioneer Historical Society, president of the Cerro Gordo County Tuberculosis and Health Department, was a member of Toastmasters International, served as commander of a Naval Reserve unit, was a member of the Mason City Airport Commission, was treasurer and president of Cerro Gordo Independent Insurance Agents, president of the Mason City Chamber of Commerce, president of the Holy Family Church Parish Council, president of the Newman Catholic School Board, president of the Newman Foundation, and chairman of the North Iowa Band Festival.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, and the Elk's Lodge, Mason City.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Kathryn Douglas, of Mason City; three daughters, Jean (Dennis) McMenimen of Cedar Rapids, Pat (Rick) Dunkel of Cedar Rapids, and Deb (Dr. Joedy) Istas of Omaha, Neb.; three sons, Bob (Pam) Douglas of Des Moines, Mike (Lynne) Douglas of Fairfax, Va., and Tom (Erin) Douglas of Mason City; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Mary Ellen Douglas of Peoria, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Bill and John; and two grandsons, Marc and Benjamin.

Ronald Allen Gibbs, the son of Harry and Esther (Lenz) Gibbs, was born Aug. 8, 1921, on a farm east of Klemme. He graduated from Klemme High School in 1939. On July 11, 1945, he married Lois Gast at Liberty Methodist Church northwest of Klemme.
Ron farmed with his father until 1950, when he and Lois moved to a farm west of Klemme. In 1959, they purchased a farm north of Garner and continued to farm until retiring and moving into Garner in 1978. In October 2008, Ron became a resident of Prairie View Apartments.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and helping his son-in-law, Jerry, on the farm.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Garner, North Garner Community Club and served on the creamery boards in Klemme and Garner.
Ron is survived by his two daughters, Ronna (Jerry) Myers of Garner and Lora (Rev. Lester "Pete") Ward of Lansing, Ill.; five grandchildren, Carrie Ward, Sarah Ward, Ami (Ryan) Frohling and their three children, Emma, Maxwell and Josephine, Beth Myers and her son, Isaac, and Jack (Billie) Myers and their two children, Trevor and Kayley; two sisters, Harriet Bridgeford of Garner and Isabelle Gibbs of Mason City; two sisters-in-law, Lola Fredin of Swaledale and Ruth Gast of Garner; and many nieces and nephews.

Ann was born July 16, 1928, in Mason City, the daughter of Peter and Omie (Nolda) Green. She attended school in Hayfield before coming to Mason City schools; later in life she received her G.E.D. She was married to Sidney (Harry) Boonstra in January 1947. She worked at Armour's packing plant for several years and also helped her husband in the bar business. They owned and operated the White House Bar and also the Stoned Toad Bar in Mason City.
She enjoyed reading, crocheting and also reading and studying the Bible. Most of all she enjoyed taking care of her family and also her home. She loved the time she spent with her family and friends and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was a lifetime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Peggy Boonstra of Mason City; grandchild, Max Boonstra of Clear Lake; nephews, Gerald Meier, Allen Green, Michael Warner, Dennis Green, Jerry Davis and Jon Boonstra; nieces, Joann Sundermann and Susan Boonstra.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Harry in 1986; son, Thomas in 1999; grandson, Neil Boonstra in 2001; sisters, Margaret Brown, Elizabeth (Meier) Groh, Katie Warner, Mollie Davis; and brothers, George and Peter Green.

Joshua James Hershey was born Dec. 14, 1981, in Mason City, the son of Tina (Hershey). Josh was baptized at First United Methodist Church in Mason City. Josh attended and received his education in the Mason City Community Schools. During his life, Josh worked for Dimensional Graphics, Graham Manufacturing, The Other Place, Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar, and Carlos O' Kelly's, all in Mason City.
Josh enjoyed camping, golfing, frisbee golf, video games, fishing and music, but he especially enjoyed hanging out with his family and many friends.
Those that are left to cherish his memory are his mother, Tina Carlson of Woodstock, Ill., his step-father, Chad Carlson of Woodstock, Ill.; his brother, Trey Carlson of Woodstock, Ill.; his sister, Amber Tickal and special friend, John Blackmore, of Crystal Lake, Ill.; his grandparents, Dorothy and Neil Hershey of Mason City; his step grandparents, John and Barb DeWall of Mason City; a special cousin, Alex Hershey of Mesa, Ariz.; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other cousins, and many close friends.

Geraldine Philips King was born Nov. 24, 1911, to Cleveland and Myrtle (Shaffer) Phillips in New Hampton. She attended school in New Hampton and graduated from Grinnell College in 1932. On May 17, 1932, she was united in marriage to Clyde King in Lancaster, Mo.
Jerry was a woman of many interests. Bridge was her passion, followed closely by quilting. She learned to quilt late in life and made quilts for each member of her family. Some of her other hobbies were basket making, knitting, tatting, sewing and working with stained glass. She was an avid reader and usually had a jigsaw puzzle to work on. Her home was filled with antiques, collected and refinished by her. She was a good cook and was still trying new recipes into her 90s.
During her lifetime, Jerry was active in the Charles City Arts Association, Mayflower Descendants, Colonial Dames, 19th Amendment Society and the Charles City Library Board. She was also a Girl Scout leader for many years.
Jerry was a lifetime member of City Improvement and the Hospital Auxiliary. She was a 75+ member of the PEO Sisterhood, Chapter JQ.
Jerry is survived by her two daughters, Nancy (Kent) Hobert of Martinez, Calif., and Bunny (Steve) Fox of West Des Moines; four grandchildren, Timothy Hobert, Beth Hobert, Amy (Tom) Beaty and Roger (Shelly) Fox; six great grandchildren, Timothy Hobert, Jordan and Anna Fox, Ryan, Julia and Luke Beaty; one sister, Ruth Philips Natvig Kilmer; and one brother, Robert Shaffer Phillips.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Clyde King, and an infant son, Philip.

CHARLES CITY - Dr. Bruce Edwin Dietrich, DVM, 57, of Charles City, died Friday (March 27, 2009) at his home of Renal Cell Carcinoma.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Charles City, with the Rev. Carl Ries and Monsignor Stanley Hayek, celebrating the Mass.

Inurnment will be in St. Francis Xavier Cemetery, Dyersville, at a later date.

Friends may greet the family on Tuesday an hour prior to the Mass at the church.

Dr. Bruce Edward Dietrich, DVM, was born on June 26, 1951, in Patterson, N.J., the son of Edwin and Jane (Murray) Dietrich. He was a 1969 graduate of the Manchester Regional High School in Haledon, N.J.

Bruce then attended Iowa State University, graduating with a B.S. degree in 1973 ,and receiving his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree in 1978.

On Sept. 22, 1979, at St. Francis Xavier Basilica in Dyersville, he married Deborah L. Eike Dietrich, DVM. To this union, a daughter, Deborah Emily was born. The couple practiced veterinary medicine for several years in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and in 1980 purchased land in Charles City and opened the Cedar River Animal Hospital. Bruce also founded Cedar River Laboratories, a company that manufactures animal cages designed by him.

Bruce was an inventor, having ideas develop into two products being issued U.S. patents.

He was a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the Iowa Veterinary Medical Association, the finance committee at Immaculate Conception Church, the Floyd County Board of Health and had served on the Charles City Arts Council.

Bruce enjoyed bicycling, sailing, photography, coaching basketball at I.C. School, going to the beach every summer and spending time with his wife and daughter.

Survivors include his wife, Deborah; one daughter, Deborah Emily Dietrich, of Iowa City; his parents, Edwin and Jane Dietrich, of Tuscon, Ariz.; a brother, Steven (Renee) Dietrich, of Driggs, Idaho and his mother-in-law, Darlene Eike, of Dyersville.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Leo Eike.

Melanie was born on Friday, March 6, 2009, at Mercy Medical Center. She weighed 7 pounds and 7 ounces and was 19 inches long. She was a beautiful and sweet little baby girl who was a kicker and fighter from the very beginning.

Melanie leaves behind her parents, Melvin and Nichole (Bourdeaux) Scoville; big sister, Allison; grandparents, Michael Scoville, of Cedar Rapids and Gerald and Yvonne Bourdeaux, of Fort Dodge; great-grandma, Christine Bourdeaux, of Osseo, Minn.; aunts and uncles, Michael Scoville Jr., Michelle (Chris) Narum, Danielle (Cory) Pratt and Joelle (Craig) Irvin; cousins, Reice, Judson, Ainsley and Elise.

Her paternal grandmother, Marilyn Scoville, preceded Melanie in death.

NORTHWOOD -John Edward Springer, 84, of Northwood, died Saturday (March 28, 2009) at the Manly Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

A memorial service for John will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 1, 2009, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, with the Rev. Karl Hermanson, of First Shell Rock Lutheran Church in Northwood, officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the chapel.

According to his wishes, cremation has taken place.

John Edward Springer was born on Oct. 25, 1924, in Grand Junction, Iowa, the son of Harold and Lillian (Lorenzen) Springer. He attended Grand Junction Community School, and graduated from Paton, Iowa, High School. After completing his schooling, John farmed around the Paton, Gowrie, and Vincent, Iowa areas. John also worked as a route deliveryman for the Coca- Cola Bottling Company, and also sold insurance for Globe Life and American Republic Insurance Companies. For most of John's life, he drove over the road semi tractor-trailer for Duane Bakken until his retirement.

John was united in marriage to Esther Michehl on April 7, 1945, in Des Moines.

John enjoyed fishing, hunting, and bowling.

He was a former member of a bowling league in Humboldt, International Order of Odd Fellows, and the Humboldt/Dakota City School Board.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Esther Springer, of Northwood; his children, Don (Sue) Springer, of Richmond, Va., Mary (John) Lotts, of Greenbrier, Tenn., and Kevin (Laurie) Springer, of Northwood; seven grandchildren, Mike (Laura) Fevold, of Bowling Green, Ky., Ed (Meredith) Fevold, of Old Hickory, Tenn., Jacob and Morgan Springer, of Northwood, Kurt Springer, of Sioux Falls, S.D., Jeanette (Wayne) Camden, of Chesterfield, Va., and Donald (Dawn) Springer Jr., of Newport News, Va.; six great-grandchildren, Drew and Taylor Fevold, Anthony and Jessica Johnson, and Ashley and Cody Springer; two step-grandchildren, Stephanie and Shannon Camden; a sister, Evelyn Hoyt, of Perry; a sister-in-law, Ruby Springer, of Jefferson; many nieces and nephews; and other extended family members and friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Clarence "C.A. Hap" Springer, and Eugene "Gene" Springer; a sister, Ruth Jones; and a great-grandson.

Liza was born on Aug. 16, 1967, in Mason City, the daughter of Lee and Barb (Tschirki) Meleney. She was baptized and confirmed at the First United Methodist Church in Mason City.

Liza graduated from Mason City High School in 1985 and attended North Iowa Area Community College. Liza worked for Midwest Construction for several years. She also ran a day care from her home.

She was very fond of children. She was caring and giving to others. Liza was united in marriage to Paul Despenas on April 27, 1991, at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Mason City. To this union two beautiful daughters were born. Alexa Lee is a senior and Alaina Marie who is in the eighth grade, both in Johnston.

Liza loved being on the drill team for four years.

She enjoyed dancing, reading, talking on the phone, exercising, and eating healthy. Liza loved to have fun. Her family and friends were important to her.

She is survived by her parents: Lee and Barb Meleney; Paul Despenas; her two daughters: Alexa Lee and Alaina Marie Despenas; two brothers: Tim (Karen) Meleney of San Diego, Calif., and Kory (Nicole) Meleney, of Mason City; two nieces: Kaitlyn and Marah Meleney. She is also survived by her aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents: Leo and Ann Meleney and Ray and Helen Tschirki.

BLACK RIVER FALLS, Wis. - Jean Louise (Swaim) Schwieger, of Black River Falls, Wis., formerly of Clear Lake, Iowa, left to be with the Lord on March 28, 2009, in La Crosse, Wis. A graveside service will be held at a later date.

Memorials are asked to be directed to the Schwieger family at N6150 Julianna Rd. (No. 705), Black River Falls, WI 54651.

Jean was born on Feb. 9 1941, to Joyce and Nelda Swaim in Jefferson, Iowa. She attended school and graduated from Churdan High School, then later went on to attend the American Beauty School in Des Moines, Iowa.

She married Larry Schwieger in April of 1961 and worked as a beautician until 1964, and after moving to Clear Lake, Iowa, she went to work at the Clear Lake Bakery where she worked until it closed.

She enjoyed doing crossword books, planting flowers, putting puzzles together and looked forward to her yearly vacations with her sisters. She loved living in Black River Falls and enjoyed watching turkeys run up and down the road outside her house, as well as the daily walks she took with her husband. She also loved taking care of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and will be sadly missed by all that knew her.

She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Larry Schwieger, of Black River Falls, Wis.; one daughter, Becky (Greg) Schwieger, of Clear Lake, Iowa, and one son, Bob (Addy) Schwieger, of Clear Lake; three grandchildren, Stephanie (Richie) Broege, of Mason City, Iowa; Tiffany (Tyler) Riley, of Tumwater, Wash., and Tasha (Cory) Goetsch, of Northwood, Iowa; four great-grandchildren, Devon Barkema, Raeya Martinson, Taylor and Cael Stucky; two sisters, JoAnn Comstock, of Jefferson, Iowa, and Karen (Steve) McCoy, of Jefferson, Iowa, and brother, Chuck (Brenda) Swaim, of Ames, Iowa; two sisters-in-law, Sue (Tom) Dempsey, of Mason City, Iowa, and Dianne (Jim) Blackburn, of Charles City, Iowa; special friends, Jim and Lori DelMedico and family, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joyce and Nelda Swaim, father and mother-in-law, Lyle and Marian Schwieger; brother-in-law, Ron Comstock, and sister-in-law, Linda True.
