MITCHELL - Clemens Duane Lovik, 83, of Mitchell, died Sunday (March 15, 2009) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 19, 2009, at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mitchell with the Rev. Wayne Ellingson and Irmgard Ellingson, associate in ministry, officiating. Burial will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Mitchell, with military honors conducted by Osage VFW Post 7920.

GREENE - Funeral services for Ella Ramker, 84, of 507 North Bluff St., Greene will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Greene, with the Rev. Monsignor Walter Brunkan officiating.

Burial will be in the St. Mary Cemetery in Greene.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, March 16, 2009, at Reid's Funeral Chapel, 519 North First Street, Greene, where there will be a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue Tuesday at the church one hour before services.

Ella Mehmen was born on March 19, 1924 in Clarksville, Butler County, a daughter of William and Ella (Lursen) Mehmen, and died on Friday, Mach 13, 2009, at the Eleventh Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

She received her education in the Clarksville schools.

She was united in marriage to Bernard LeRoy Ramker on Aug. 21, 1943, at Fort Smith, Ark. They made their home in the Greene area, where she was employed by the Greene Caf� for many years. On Sept. 11, 1967, she began working at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City, where she remained until her retirement on Feb. 15, 1987.

Following her retirement, she helped Bernard with his mowing and painting in the Greene area. She donated her time working at St. Mary Catholic Church. She enjoyed going for walks, playing cards and loved to dance. She enjoyed hosting the grandchildren's annual card party at her home.

Throughout the summer, the grandchildren would come to visit and hated to go home when it was time to do so. She enjoyed cooking and will be remembered for her homemade pies and canned pickles.

Living family members include, a daughter, Rose (Steve) Edwards of Charles City; a son, Darwin (Connie) Ramker of Waverly; six grandchildren, Brian (Amy) Ramker, Jane (Mike) Kayser, Michael Ramker, Tony (Melissa) Edwards, Tami (Dan) Cline, Traci (Nathan) Bartels; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard, on Aug. 11, 1999, her parents, five sisters and five brothers.

ST. PETERS, Mo. -Nancy Elaine Limbaugh, 65, of St. Peters, Mo., passed away on March 14, 2009.

She was born on Dec. 30, 1943, in Manly, Iowa, to Arnold August and Helen Pauline (Knudson) Hackbart. She lived all her young life in Manly and Grafton. She graduated in 1962 from North Central High School in Manly.

She married Jack Limbaugh in Hawaii in 1966 then they moved to Guam, later they moved to Missouri. She worked at SSM Hospital for 25 years.

She is survived by one sister, Karen Platt, of Bettendorf; one brother, Allen Hackbart, of California; three nieces, Lori Angus, Kari Neathery and Rachel Brady; one nephew, Andy Hackbart; three great-nieces, Maya Neathery, Ani Moore and Abby Hackbart. She had many cousins and friends in North Iowa.

Memorial Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Alternative Funeral & Cremation Services, 2115 Parkway Drive, St. Peters, Mo. 63376, with visitation from 10 a.m. until time of services.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Outreach Meals on Wheels in care of the funeral home.

MITCHELL - Clemens Duane Lovik, 83, of Mitchell, died Sunday (March 15, 2009) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn., from a lengthy chronic illness.

Clem was born on June 16, 1925, at Forest City, the son of Henry and Mayme (Winterton) Lovik. He was educated in a one-room schoolhouse through the eighth grade. Clem grew up in the Wapsi area and Floyd County. He helped his father on the family farm, where they raised cattle, poultry and crops. He picked corn in Nebraska at the age of 19. At the age of 20, in 1946, he was confirmed into the Lutheran Church in Lime Springs.

Clem served in the United States Navy from March 8, 1946, until Dec. 24, 1947, as Seaman First Class, Company 117, in Saipan, Mariana's Islands, Guam and Tinion.

He was presented with honorary medals, awards and pins at VFW Post 7920, on June 9, 2007, 60 years after his discharge from the Navy, at a ceremony attended by Rep. Mark Kuhn.

Clem was united in marriage to Kathryn I. (Black) on June 22, 1957, until 1981. He has resided in Mitchell, with his former wife Kathryn, from 1999 to the present. Clem worked at the Oliver Tractor Plant and White Farm in Charles City for 37 and a half years until his retirement in 1981. He also worked at John Deere in Dubuque and at the Sugar Beet Plant in Mason City.

Clem enjoyed food, reading, fishing, hunting, dancing, cars, movies, scenic car rides, his children and family. He was very proud of his German and Norwegian heritage. Clem was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mitchell, the American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW.

He will be greatly missed, "our sweet little humble, tender-hearted Dad."

He was preceded by his parents, brother, Howard Lovik; and son-in-law. Jeff Lynch.

CHARLES CITY -Rosie Funte, 81, of Charles City died Tuesday (March 17, 2009) at her home.

Funeral services for Rosie Funte will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City. Pastor James Grabitske, of Cross Evangelical Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens rural Charles City.

Rosie Lee Parks Funte was born Sept. 2, 1927, at Hurley, Va., the daughter of Sam and Mae ( Conley) Parks. She received her education at Hurley.

On Oct. 16, 1948, she was united in marriage to Ray Funte at Danville, Ill. They lived in Charles City all their lives. She was a member of Cross Lutheran Church.

Rosie enjoyed camping, fishing, working crossword puzzles and reading. Family was very important to Rosie and she always looked forward to sharing her life with them.

Living family members include two children, Raymond Funte of Osage and Betty Wolf of Charles City; seven grandchildren, Jason, Jonathan, Jamie, Melissa and Tracy Funte, and Ryan and Renita Wolf; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Paul Parks of Charles City and Danny (Emily) Parks of Augusta, Ga.; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on June 16, 1995; two sons, Freddie and Edward Funte; a great-grandson, Levi Sansgard; a sister, Georgia McClanhan; and three brothers, Dewey, Charles and Eckle Parks.

Aaron Frank Jewell was born on Sept. 18, 1918, in Rockford, a son of Jay and Lura (Emery) Jewell, and died Saturday (March 14, 2009) at Cedar Health in Charles City.

He received his education graduating from the Greene High School in 1938.

On April 24, 1942, he was united in marriage to Ethel Bradley at Greene. Aaron and Ethel lived in the Greene area their entire married life. Aaron was inducted into the Army Air Corps on Oct. 15, 1942, where he served with the 327 AAF Squad M and was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant on Dec. 4, 1945.

Aaron ran a corn shelling business, a feed business, and was employed by the Greene Cooperative Elevator in the Greene area.

He will be remembered as an avid horse lover and enjoyed raising and showing horses. He was a member of the POA's (Pony Of the Americas) and was a judge for many of their shows. He was instrumental in organizing Hoof Beats, a mountain drill team that performed throughout Northern Iowa. He was an auctioneer and taught at the Taylor School of Auctioneering for several years.

Aaron was a lifelong active member of the United Methodist Church. He was a certified lay speaker for the United Methodist Church and participated in the Community Men's Bible Study Group.

He was active in the Greene Senior Center. He served on the Greene Community School Board, Butler County Extension Service and was a 4-H leader. He was a member of Round Grove Golf and Country Club where he enjoyed many happy hours golfing.

Living family members include his loving wife of 65 years, Ethel, of Greene; four children, Michael (Ruth) Jewell of Fort Collins, Colo., Douglas (Kathy) Jewell of Highlands Ranch, Colo., Christopher Jewell of Liberal, Kan., and Kevin (Jamie) of Conyers, Ga.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Hariette Jewell, of Oceanside, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

Aaron was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, J.L.Jewell, and his sister, Alma Boom.

Thomas Allen Johnson was born July 16, 1938, in Mason City, the son of George Charles and Marlus Fern (Allen) Johnson. He grew up and attended schools in the North Iowa area. He moved to California and spent many years as a custodian for schools and hospitals. Thomas was blessed with five children, Ramona, Rosemary, Paul, Wendy and Julie. In the late 90s he moved back to Mason City. Thomas was enrolled at Word of Truth Bible College, Mason City.

Thomas loved life and socializing with friends and family during coffee. His greatest love was the Lord, he deeply enjoyed studying the Bible. He was a good-hearted man that will be remembered for his concern for others before himself.

Thomas was a very active member of the Riverside Friends Church, Mason City.

ANKENY - Janet K. Moore, 44, passed away Monday (March 16, 2009) at Mercy Hospice in Johnston after a long battle with breast cancer.

Janet was born Sept. 2, 1964, to Robert and Barbara Schwarz. She graduated from Ankeny High School and went to Drake University where she graduated with an accounting degree. She then earned her designation as a CPA and worked as a controller at Delta Dental Insurance. Janet was also a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Ankeny.

Survivors include her husband, Michael Moore, of Ankeny; daughter, Kelsey McLaughlin of Ankeny; step-children, Nathan and Rachel Moore of Ankeny; parents, Barb and Jake Van Horn of Ankeny; brother, Jeff and wife Susan, Schwarz of Portland, Ore.; step-sister, Laura Van Horn of Des Moines; step-brother, Rick and wife, Deb Van Horn of California; mother-in-law, Marlene Moore, of Mason City; sister-in-law, Christine and husband, Chris, and daughter, Emily Bradford, of Overland Park, Kan.

Schrandt, Florence Edna  
 
OSIAN - Florence Edna Schrandt of Ossian died March 1,2009, at the Winneshiek Medical Center after a short illness. She was 92.

She was born the daughter of Alfred and Minnie (Schweinefus) Torkelson on Oct. 30, 1916, in rural Ossian, Dover Township, Fayette County, Iowa. Florence was baptized and confirmed in her faith at Stavanger Lutheran Church in rural Ossian. She received her education by attending Dover Township No. 7 Country School in Fayette County.

On May 4, 1940, she was united in marriage to Herbert J. Schrandt. They farmed near Castalia and raised their family of four children. Herbert was killed in an auto crash on July 11, 1964, and Florence stayed on the farm until 1967, when she moved to Ossian. Florence worked at St. Francis DeSales School as a cook for many years.

She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Rosary Society. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, especially kringla, graham cracker pie and chocolate angel food cake.

Survivors include two sons, Jerry (Beverly) Schrandt of Ossian and Donald (Sherri) Schrandt of Britt; two daughters, Joan (Jerry) Ameling of Ossian and Joyce (Ray) Piorkowski of Elkader; five grandchildren, Nicole (Steve) Buchheit, Julie Hoefler, Michelle (Dan) Clements, Rodney Linderbaum and Kimberly (Jonathan) Shea; three stepgrandchildren, Gina (Kevin) Blake, Carla (Dan) Llewellyn and Kate (Steve) Rogers; eight great-grandchildren, Kayla and Nicholas Buchheit, Devyn, Austin, Jenna and Ethan Hoefler, Nolan Clements and Ruby Shea; three stepgreat-grandchildren, Ryan and Darin Buchheit and Zeb Riherd; one sister, Irene (Robert) Klisart of Ossian; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Herbert Schrandt; three sisters, Marjorie Lenth in 1993, Evelyn Staska in 1999, Inez Chensvold in 2002; and two brothers, Walter Torkelson in 1991 and Art Torkelson in 1982; a granddaughter, Mindy Schrandt in 1979; a son-in-law, Richard Linderbaum in 1976, and a step grandson, J.T. Riherd in 2004.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 5, at St. Francis de Sales Church in Ossian, with Monsignor Cletus J. Hawes officiating. Interment was in St. Francis Cemetery, Ossian.

Visitation was held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 4, at the Schmitz Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the chruch.

ROCKWELL - Velma M. Severe, 83, of 917 First St. S., Rockwell, died Monday (March 9, 2009) at her winter home in Mesa, Ariz., surrounded by her husband and both daughters.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 19, at First United Methodist Church, Rockwell, with the Rev. John Scherb officiating. Interment will be in Rockwell Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St., Rockwell. The family will greet friends from 4 to 6 p.m., and again one hour prior to services at the church.

Velma was born on Feb. 18, 1926, on a farm near Sheffield, the daughter of Archie P. and Mildred "Mendell" Ingraham. In 1931 she moved with her family to a farm southeast of Rockwell. During this time she attended country school and then graduated from Rockwell High School with the class of 1943.

On Oct. 27, 1944, she was united with Lyle E. Severe in holy matrimony in Des Moines. They were together for 64 years and hoping for 65. Velma was engaged as a relief telephone operator at the Rockwell Telephone Co. and then as a clerk with Geer and Strahorn Grocery and Mercantile.

After 1956, when she switched careers, she was known as the Avon Lady. Velma set many, many records with Avon including Presidents Club, High Sales and Customer Satisfaction Awards as well as working for 49 years. Some of her closest friends started out being customers on whose doors she knocked.

She was a former 4-H leader and enjoyed crocheting, embroidery, sewing and baking. She was a loving wife and mother and was very supportive of anyone that needed help.

Since 1986 she and Lyle spent part of their winter in Arizona at different locations in and around Phoenix and Mesa.

Those thankful in sharing Velma's life include her husband, Lyle, of Rockwell; two daughters, Linda (Jim) Hage of Escanaba, Mich., and Jane (Sam) Lou of Libertyville, Ill. Her two grandchildren Michele (26) and David (21) Lou, all of Libertyville; and many dear friends and neighbors.

Her parents; sister, Valois, her husband, Walter, and their son, Larry Koester; brother Ronald, wife, Maureen, and their daughter, Rose Marie, preceded Velma in death.

FORSYTH, Mo. -Harland "Simple" Simon, 83, of Forsyth, Mo., died Feb. 23, 2009, at The Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown. Interment was at Branson Cemetery in Branson, Mo.

Harland was born April 1, 1925, in Lake Mills, Iowa. A World War II vet and a dedicated member of the Shriners and the VFW, he was a truck driver for Smith Trucking for over 30 years. He and his wife, June, retired to Forsyth, Mo. They managed a trailer park.

He had such a huge heart and was so loving to every person he would meet. He loved to fish on his fishing pontoon and treated his dog, Skipper, like a queen.

He will be sadly missed by his stepdaughter, Mary Lynn Speck, and family of Altoona; brother, Arnold (Bonnie) Simon, of Clear Lake; 15 nieces and nephews throughout the United States including Mason City locals Janie Simon, Patricia Eggereth, Gene Simon, Laurie, Carolee Franta and Darla Hutchinson.

He was preceded in death by his wife, June Simon; parents, Alice and Alzie Simon; one sister, Edith Stanfield; two brothers, Alvin (Miz) Simon and Donald Simon.

BELMOND - Arlene Watt Schroder Thayer, 102�, a longtime Wright County, Iowa, resident passed away. Arlene died Sunday (March 15, 2009) at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls, as a result of pneumonia and age-related factors.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, March 19, at Calvary Baptist Church, 516 E. Main St., Belmond, with Pastor Steven Hill officating. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery, Dows.

Visitation will be from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday at the church.

Arlene Watt was born on the family farm in Vernon Township, Wright County, on July 5, 1906, to Tom and Maude (Lavell) Watt. She was the middle child of a family of five. She attended the rural Vernon No. 5 School in Vernon Township.

On Sept. 22, 1926, she was united in marriage to Harry W. Schroder at the bride's home near Galt. To this union were born a son, Erwin Leroy (AKA as Jack) and two daughters, Va Donna Jean and Rita Rae.

After the death of Mr. Schroder on Oct. 23, 1964, she married Ralph Thayer of Belmond in January 1966. Mr. Thayer passed away in August 1975.

Arlene's entire life was spent in the Galt, Dows, Rowan and Belmond areas. She spent several winters in Florida. Arlene was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond and was active in church activities. She was a longtime member, until the time of her death, of the Blaine Friendship Club.

Arlene loved her garden and flowers and enjoyed doing hand work. She was a lifelong home maker and had worked as a cook for a time at the Belmond Health Care Center. She had the unique privilege of having her driver's license renewed when she had reached age 100.

After suffering a stroke in May 2007, she resided at Scenic Manor Care Center in Iowa Falls.

Survivors include her daughters, Va Donna and husband, John Whipple, and Rita and husband, Dwight Daniels, all of Iowa Falls; daughter-in-law, Mabel Schroder of Charles City; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie Watt of Swaledale and Jeanette Schroder of Belmond; 12 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren; and other family members.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Maude Watt; one sister, Mae; three brothers, David, Tom and Don; two husbands, Harry Schroder and Ralph Thayer; one son, Erwin (Jack); one daughter-in-law, Doris Schroder; two grandsons, Wayne Whipple and Douglas Schroder; one granddaughter, Shelly Schroder; and two great-grandsons, Ryan Schroder and Calieb Schroder.

MASON CITY - Bernardine Katherine White, 75, of 76 Stony Way, Mason City, died Monday (March 16, 2009) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A graveside inurnment service will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

A celebration of her life with a luncheon will follow the service at VFW Post 733, 1603 S. Monroe Ave., Mason City.

Bernardine was born March 26, 1933, in Sioux Rapids, the daughter of Bernard and Serena (Christiansen) Meiers. She graduated from Eldora High School.

On July 14, 1953, Bernardine married Charles White in Mason City, and to this union two children were born. Bernardine was a stay-at-home mother to her two children until her husband Charles' retirement in 1987. After that she went to work for Murph's Bar and Grill as a bartender for 10 years and was just recently employed at the VFW for the last 15 years.

Bernardine enjoyed making afghans, knitting, watching birds and antiquing. She was a people person with lots of friends. She also loved to watch her grandchildren play sports, especially hockey.

Bernardine was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, and the VFW Auxiliary.

She is survived by her husband, Charles, of Mason City; her daughter, Patty (Greg) Held of Mason City; her son, Joe (Stacy) White of New London; her grandchildren, Matt Held of Ames, Josh Held of Iowa City, Hannah, Maclane and Holland White of New London; and her sisters, Maryellen Cazanas of Mason City and Sherrill (Marvin) Maritsch of Minneapolis, Minn.

Bernardine was preceded in death by her parents, her grandson, Charles Joseph; her brother Gordon Meiers; and her mother and father-in-law, Jack and Rose White.

MASON CITY - Florence I. Benjegerdes, 101, of Mason City died Tuesday (March 17, 2009) at Homestead Assisted Living, Mason City.

A celebration of her life will be 10 a.m. Saturday March 21, at the Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, with the Rev. Donald Preston officiating. Interment will be in the Manly Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Bride Colonial Chapel, Manly, and then one hour before the service at the church.

Florence was born July 18, 1907, in rural Mason City, the daughter of Charles F. and Maude (Wood) Seidel.

She attended country school south of the farm until 12 years of age. She moved to Cerro Gordo County and graduated from the eighth grade.

She worked as a hired girl. She married Walter Herman Benjegerdes on May 20, 1930, in rural Mason City. She lived on the same farm for 72 years until she moved to the Homestead Assisted Living in Mason City in October 2002.

She was baptized and joined Bethel United Methodist Church in 1933, where she had taught Sunday school for 18 years, helped in the kitchen for bazaars, funerals and other events. She made many quilts and made a baby quilt for each of her grandchildren. She knitted slippers and mittens for the Christian Home.

She and Walter enjoyed traveling by car, especially the western states, and spending their winters in Arizona.

She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly, the church quilting club, garden club, Fairview Ladies Aid, card club and bowling league. She and Walter when they were first married belonged to the "Foxy Forty" dance club in Mason City.

Florence is survived by her two sons, Donald Benjegerdes and his wife, Bobbie, and Jimmy Benjegerdes and his wife, Carolyn, both of Mason City; five grandchildren, Becky Wendler and her husband, Tony, of Armstrong, Betsy Triebwasser and her husband, Gary, of Omaha, Neb., Lesley Thomas and her husband, Gary, of Golden, Colo., Craig Benjegerdes and his wife, Debra, of Manly, and Karl Benjegerdes and his wife, Tina, of Mason City; 14 great-grandchildren, John Ross and James Wendler, Robert and his wife, Naomi, Karis and Karl Yanike, Allison, Charles and Olivia Thomas, Jessica, Samuel and Timothy Benjegerdes, Sophia, Angela and Vivian Benjegerdes; two great-great-grandchildren, Logan Benjegerdes and Caleb Yanike; and two sisters-in-law, Mavis Seidel, of Northwood and Arlene Seidel of Mason City.

Mary was born June 14, 1911, in Cantril, the daughter of Elmer and Anna (Baird) Jones.

She was married to Everett Harness on Dec. 21, 1934, in Carthage, Ill. Mary worked as a retail clerk at the Ben Franklin Store in Mason City for many years. Mary loved crocheting and she was known for making baby caps for Mercy Hospitals and also lap robes for the residents in the Veterans Hospital in Marshalltown.

She enjoyed going on shopping trips with her friend, Martha. She loved her family and she enjoyed the times she spent with them. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Mary was survived by her daughter, Sherry Lynch and husband, John, of Carrollton, Texas; grandchildren, Michelle Lynch and husband, Paul Fika, of Highland Village, Texas, Tabitha Shannon Harness-Simmons and husband, James F. Simmons, of Illinois, Anthony Harness of Illinois and Mica Harness-Morrison of Illinois; great-grandchildren, David Fika, Nathaniel Fika and Elex Mundy, Ashley Harness-Simmons, Hunter Simmons, Amber Simmons and Heather Simmons; sister, Mabel Haunches of Mason City; and a godson, Wayne Ebbers.

Mary was born in Belmond on June 19, 1956, the daughter of Adrian and Lucille (Sweersa) DeWaard. She graduated from Corwith-Wesley High School. In school she enjoyed participating in track, softball, basketball, cheerleading and music.

She was united in marriage to Mark Heard in Kanawha on April 23, 1977. After graduating high school she attended Dordt College and remained active in sports by competing on the school's track, basketball and softball teams. She graduated from Dordt in 1979 and began working at the hospital in Britt. Mary and her family moved to Rockford in 1983. She began working at Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School District (RRMR) while attending UNI to get her special education endorsement.

After obtaining her endorsement, she taught special education at RRMR for 18 years, as well as holding positions as the assistant volleyball coach and head basketball coach. She had also most recently been a Little League softball coach.

Mary was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Harmony Club and the Card Club. Playing 500 was one of her favorite card games. She enjoyed traveling and camping with her family. She also remained active in sports by golfing, boating and waterskiing. She liked to try out new things, and would try anything at least once. Most important to Mary was spending time with her family and friends.

Those left to honor her memory include her husband, Mark; mother, Lucille DeWaard of Britt; four children, Stephanie (Greg) Dingel of Waterloo, Andy (Jamie) Heard of Waterloo, Brady (16) and Kaci (11) Heard of Rockford; a grandson, Riley Mark Dingel; brothers, Al (Sue) DeWaard of Stone Lake, Wis., David DeWaard of Chicago, Ill., Arnold (Lois) DeWaard of Pleasantville and Mark (Becky) DeWaard of Iowa City; sister, Judy (Ralph) Oltman of Nevada, parents-in-law, Rollie and Sandra Heard of Rockford; brothers-and sisters-in-law, Brad (Lee) Heard of Wickenburg, Ariz., Kendall and Sheila Enabnit of Marble Rock and Gregg Heard of Tempe, Ariz.; and many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

MARBLE ROCK - Funeral services for Roger R. Duryee, 29, of Marble Rock will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 21, 2009, at the United Methodist Church, Rockwell, with Pastor Ken Livingston officiating. Cremation will follow services.

Visitation will be at the church one hour before service.

Roger Ruhl Duryee was born Aug. 27, 1979, at Holy Family Hospital in Esterville, Emmet County, the son of Oscar and Rose Romer. He was adopted at the age of 7 years by his uncle and aunt, Arnold and Louise Duryee. He died Tuesday (March 17, 2009) at his home in Marble Rock.

He grew up in Marble Rock and attended the Christian Academy in Charles City and the RRMR schools.

He was an employee of Sherman Nurseries for the past eight years. Roger was a fanatic sports fan who enjoyed watching Minnesota Vikings football and the L.A. Lakers basketball. As a youth, he enjoyed playing basketball at school and at home in the backyard. He enjoyed fishing and water tubing up North at Pine River, Minn.

Roger had a charismatic smile and was one who loved life and what it had to offer. He was a saved child of God at the age of 9 at the First Baptist Church at Greene.

He is survived by his loving parents, Arnold and Louise Duryee of Marble Rock, his birth mother: Rose Romer, his siblings: Mike (Becky) Romer, of Sheldon, Todd (Suzy) Duryee, of Marble Rock, Troy (Becky) Duryee, of Marble Rock, Luanne (Jim) Tegtmeier, of Marble Rock, Walter (Sharon) Duryee, of Baton Rouge, La., Deb Duryee of Sheldon, Dale (Samantha) Duryee of Charles City, Ervin Duryee of Cedar Rapids and Chris Duryee of Marble Rock; and his paternal grandmother, Garnet Duryee of Iowa Falls. He is also survived by several aunts and uncles and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his birth father, Oscar Romer Jr., and a brother, Larry Romer.

MASON CITY - Everett J. "Hermie" Hermanson, 93, of Mason City died Wednesday (March 18, 2009) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 21, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating.

A gathering of family and friends will be held in the Fireside Room following the memorial service.

There will be no visitation. Everett has donated his body to the University of Iowa College of Medicine.

Inurnment will be at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the First United Methodist Church or the Mason City Foundation, 308 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, IA 50401.

Everett was born Oct. 31, 1915, in Mason City, the son of Herman and Ruby (Crawford) Hermanson. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1933. He attended Mason City Junior College and earned his B.S. degree from Iowa State University.

He was united in marriage to Beverly Jensen on June 26, 1939, in Fergus Falls, Minn. Everett worked 31 years as a sales manager for Hermanson Brothers Dairy, which became Carnation Dairy in 1954, until his retirement in 1979. He also worked for Producers Creamery in Springfield, Mo., in 1938; Gamble Skogmo in Algona, 1940-1943; and Roberts Dairy, Lincoln, Neb., 1946-1948. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a T-4 sergeant, from September 1943 to May 1946.

Everett was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and a 50-year member of Rotary International. He had been serving on the Kinney-Lindstrom Foundation Board since 1988. He also had served on the boards of the Mason City Foundation, the Mason City Community Concert Association and the Public Health Nursing organization.

At Iowa State University, he was editor-in-chief of The Bomb yearbook, a member of Sigma Chi fraternity and a member of an equestrian performance group.

He enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, traveling and taking and editing videos. He was known to friends and family as the "Video King." He enjoyed volunteer work at the church and serving on the maintenance committee at the Stockman House.

Everett is survived by his wife: Beverly Hermanson of Mason City; two sons: Dr. Paul Hermanson and wife, Fran, of Marshalltown, Dr. Mark Hermanson and wife, Tammy, of Bettendorf; three grandchildren: Dr. John Hermanson and wife, Patty, Mary Greff and husband, Andrew, and Katie Hardie and husband, Dennis; five great-grandchildren: Noah and Phoebe Hermanson, and Elizabeth, Kathryn and Nicholas Greff.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter Ann Collins and her husband, Dave; and two grandchildren, Scott and Jeffrey Collins.

CLEAR LAKE - Nellie Louise Jones, 93, 214 N. Lakeview Drive, Clear Lake, died Thursday (March 19, 2009) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 21, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jeff Ungs of Gallilean Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.

Memorials may be given to the Nellie Jones Memorial Fund.

Louise was born July 10, 1915, in Clear Lake, the daughter of Samuel and Irene (Bower) Farrow. She attended country school close to home. She married Dwain Fuston in 1931 and worked as a retail and grocery clerk in Garner, until relocating to Burlington in the 1960's to work for the state of Iowa.

In 1974 she married Les Jones and after retiring they were able to travel and enjoy gardening. Louise returned to Clear Lake after Les's death to be close to family.

She enjoyed her lakeside apartment and made multiple crocheted lap blankets which she donated to residents at the Oakwood Care Center and Salvation Army. Louise also enjoyed counted-cross stitch, quilting, card playing and Hawkeye sports.

Louise is survived by her sister, Helen Peterson of Clear Lake; brothers, Bob Farrow and his wife, Bev, of Norwalk, Iowa, Jay Farrow and his wife, Darlene, of Adel, and Donald Farrow of Medina, Ohio. She will be sadly missed also by several nieces and nephews.

Louise is preceded in death by her parents, Sam and Irene; brother, Lynn; and sisters Leona, Dorothy and Maxine.

CLEAR LAKE - Bruce L. Schulze, 49, 22262A Eagle Ave., Clear Lake, died Thursday (March 19, 2009) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 23, at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be at Elim Cemetery, Fertile.

Visitation will be from 2 until 4 p.m. Sunday, March 22, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Memorials may be given to the Bruce L. Schulze Memorial Fund.

Bruce was born May 2, 1959, in Mason City, the son of Randy and Blanche (Clapper) Schulze. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1978. He married Diane Hermanson Aug. 30, 1980, in Lake Mills. He worked at Winnebago Industries as a welder in the model shop.

In 1988 he started his own business, Schulze Welding and Machine Inc., where he catered to fabricating new ideas until 1996. He then started at Basic Materials Corp. in Fertile where he ran a loader and later became shop foreman.

Bruce loved riding his motorcycle, road trips, remote-control toys and racing his go-cart at Forest City. He also enjoyed camping and fishing, and especially spending time with his family and friends. Bruce was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake.

Bruce is survived by his wife, Diane Schulze, of Clear Lake; two sons, Steven Schulze and his wife, Cassie, of Forest City, and Ryan Schulze and fianc�e, Kalyn Gullic, of Mason City; grandson, Trenton Schulze, of Mason City; father, Randy Schulze and his wife, Debbie, of Forest City; mother, Blanche Schulze of Clear Lake; two brothers, Rick Schulze of Garner, and Jeff Schulze and significant other, Yesenia Jimenez, of Clear Lake; father-in-law, John Hermanson and fianc�e, Trish Busch, of Scarville, and stepfather-in-law Craig Benson of Lake Mills; five brothers-in-law: Pat Hermanson and his wife, Michelle, of Scarville, Tim Hermanson and his wife, Nicole, of Lake Mills, Chris Hermanson and his wife, Angie, of Bloomington, Minn., Chuck Olson of Scarville and Chad Benson and his wife, Quincey, of Forest City; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews and special friends.

Bruce was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Dorothy Benson; step mother-in-law, Marcia Hermanson; and brother-in-law Donovan Hermanson.
