Terhark, Jean

CORWITH - Jean Terhark, 74, of Corwith was released from all her earthly burdens and entered into eternal life with her lord and savior Jesus Christ on Monday (April 13, 2009). Jean had most recently been residing at the Villa Cottages in Fort Dodge.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 17, at Ewing Funeral Home, 178 Center St. W., Britt, and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Jean Ann (Nelson) Terhark was born Nov. 6, 1934, to Joseph and Corrine (Narvick) Nelson in Belmond.

Jean lived a life of quiet industry growing up on her family's farm in the Britt area. After graduating from Britt High School, she married Harm Duane Terhark on June 7, 1952.

She traveled with Harm and her young family while he served his country in the Army. Later she became an integral partner in the farming operation that she and Harm built in the Corwith area.

Jean served her lord as an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Corwith. She taught various Sunday school classes, led women's Bible studies, and served in many other capacities over the years.

Jean had a boundless energy that she poured into all that she did. She led by example instead of words and everything she did was a job well done whether the task was canning that year's garden bounty, dressing chickens or baking cakes.

She was one of the most creatively gifted cooks as attested to by her family as well as her dinner guests over the years. Many of her recipes cannot be duplicated due to Jean's own brand of love being the secret ingredient.

Jean is survived by her four children, Marquita (Kenneth) Hays of Fort Dodge, Bruce (Jackie) Terhark of Corwith, Paula (Michael) Robinson of West Des Moines, and Brian (Christine) Terhark of Waukee; two siblings, Janet (Edward) Meyer of Fort Dodge and Duaine (Beverly) Nelson of Britt; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jean loved each member of her family for who they were and appreciated the special gifts of each.

Her husband, Harm, and her parents preceded Jean in death.

Brunstein, Don J.

MESERVEY - Don. J. Brunstein, 79, of Meservey, died peacefully on Friday (April 17, 2009) with his wife at his side following a courageous battle with cancer at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 20, 2009, at the First Reformed Church, Meservey, with the Rev. Rodney Meester, officiating.
Vistation will be from 3 until 5 p.m. today, Sunday, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E., Belmond and continue one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.
Don J. Brunstein, the son of John F. and Inez (Ingham) Brunstein, was born on Dec. 23, 1929, at Swaledale, Cerro Gordo County. Don was baptized on May 11, 1937. Don attended Mason City schools.
He then enlisted in the United States Navy, where he served for six years before being honorably discharged at RECSTA, San Diego, Calif. During his military tenure, Don had spent time on the USS Bradford, which carried the distinction of being first ship fired upon in the Korean War Conflict. Don had received the United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Medal, China Service Medal, and the Korean Service Medal (three stars).
Upon returning to civilian life, Don, commenced a lifelong career in the grocery and produce profession. He had spent time during his career working at Hoxy Fruit and Produce in Mason City, Associated Grocers in Colorado, Wal-Mart Grocery Division in Omaha, and with Hy-Vee Food Stores.
Don was united in marriage to Bonnie Suntken on May 25, 1968, at Denver, Colo. Throughout his entire life journey Don had a great enjoyment and passion for the people around him. Whether it was in the day to day happenings of spending time with his wife and children, or the precious opportunities on a fishing excurison with his children and grandchildren where Don relished the chance to teach them his love of fishing.
Don's outgoing and friendly personality was a wonderful gift that surely brought a warm and welcoming feeling to the public he served in his years in the grocery business.
Don looked forward to nearly any event or social activity that allowed time for a good conversation, fellowship, and some reminiscing. He enjoyed the annual family reunions and other family gatherings.
He always looked forward to afternoon coffee and get togethers with his many friends at Donna's Lounge in Meservey. He was always ready for a friendly, yet, competitve game of Uno, Canasta, Poker, of Mr. Joker cards with his friends and family.
In earlier years of his life, Don enjoyed waterskiing and swimming. He loved animals and was especially fond of his dogs. Don had always enjoyed the outdoors and in later years had enjoyed birdwatching.
Don was a past member of the VFW and American Legion during his years in Colorado and a member of the First Reformed Church in Meservey.
Don's wife, children and grandchildren have wonderful memories of fishing trips to Canada and fishing treks to many other places in regions where they had lived. They fondly remember a family trip to tour Yellowstone and various other sights in the Western United States. They will miss Don's wonderful laugh and his unique sense of humor. Don had lived for 30 years in Colorado and eight years in Omaha, Neb., before returning to his North Iowa roots in Meservey, where he and Bonnie made their home the past three years.
All who had the privilege of crossing in the path of Don's life journey will remember Don as being a very independent man who would rather place the focus on the needs and interests of others than on his own. They will miss his warm and friendly smile, his engaging personality, and his wonderful laugh. Many who saw him during the time of his battle with cancer were amazed at his strength and persverance and his innate ability to put the focus of the conversation back on others rather than himself and his challenges in health. Even in his battle with cancer, Don's warm smile, the twinkle in his eyes, and his postive outlook shown through.
Don's memory will be carried forward in the lives of his wife and life partner of more than 40 years, Bonnie Brunstein, of Meserve; his daughters, Janan Brunstein, of Iowa City, Lynn and husband Dale Henamen, of Mason City, and Monica "Susie" Larson, of Gretna, Neb.; his four grandchildren, Olivia, Trevor, Jared, and Lily Larson, all of Gretna, Neb.; his three sisters, Betty Magner, of Mason City, Marlys Jaspersen, of Cedar Rapids, and Jackie Kuhn and her husband, Paul, of Phoenix, Ariz.; many cousin, nieces, nephews and countless friends.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Tia Brunstein; his brother, Larry; and brothers-in-law, Lawrence Suntken, of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Leo Jaspersen, of Fremont, Neb.

A special remembrance by regional auto dealers and associates was held at the Colorado Auto Auction on Wednesday, April 15 at 4 p.m. It was a time of sharing of special memories from a multitude of good friends that were an important part of Dan's life.
Dan was born on Oct. 28, 1958, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Adelbert and Gynith (Abbs) Hoff.

It was while working in this field that he met the love of his life, Lanetta, whom he married in Denver, Colo., on Oct. 26, 1996. Lanetta quickly became the focus of his life. Dan was a devoted, involved parent and grandparent who will be missed.

Hoagland, Joan

MAPLETON -Joan Hoagland, 49, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away at her home in the presence of her loving husband, daughters, and sisters on Saturday (April 18, 2009). She fought a courageous two-and-one-half year battle against breast cancer. In the end she left this world for a far more beautiful place.

There will be a private family burial. This will be followed by a service at 11 a.m. Tuesday officiated by Monsignor Mark Duchaine at the Maple Valley-Anthon Oto High School Gym in Mapleton. Please join the family for a memorial breakfast beginning at 9:30 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. in the High School Commons.

Joan was a loving mother, wife, friend, and teacher. She was an inspiration to everyone she met. She faced her illness with a strength and humor, always concerned how others were doing.

Joan was born on Oct. 14, 1959, to Joseph and Colleen (Blandin) Kloberdanz in Osage, Iowa. She attended Ellsworth Community College and the University of Northern Iowa where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in elementary education.

Joan was married to David Hoagland on June 21, 1986, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. She was blessed with two wonderful daughters, Katie and Laura. Her girls were her pride and joy and her reason for living.

Joan began her teaching career as a kindergarten teacher in Manilla, Iowa. She went on to work at the Boys and Girls Home in Sioux City, then taught kindergarten in Danbury, Iowa, and also worked as a director at the Playmates Preschool in Onawa, Iowa. Joan worked for Maple Valley Elementary School as a third-grade teacher for the past nine years. During that time, she brought her wonderful sense of humor and her caring personality to her students and their families.

Joan enjoyed life to the fullest. She loved her annual summer trips to Okoboji with "the girls," going on boat rides and pretending to be young. She loved her shopping trips with her sisters and friends. There was nothing she enjoyed more than finding a bargain. She also enjoyed creating scrapbooks for her family to enjoy. Every time her family and friends see a dragonfly, they will think of Joan. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, Iowa.

Joan is survived by her husband, David Hoagland; her daughters, Katie and Laura of Mapleton, Iowa; her sister, Nancy Monroe, and her husband, Bob, of Odenton, Md., her brother, Brian Kloberdanz, and his wife, Susan, and their children, Abby, Drew, and Claire of St. Charles, Ill., her sister, Dianne Klinker, and her husband, Bill, and their sons, Thor, Knute, and Gunnar of Primghar, Iowa; her mother-in-law, Phyllis Franken of Odebolt; her brother-in-law, Gregg Hoagland, and his wife, Sherri, and their sons, Jonathan and Zachary of Carroll; and her brother-in-law, Barry Hoagland and his daughter, Brittany, of Ankeny.

Joan was preceded in death by her father, Joseph Kloberdanz; her mother, Colleen Kloberdanz; and her brother, Kevin Kloberdanz, from Osage.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Joan Hoagland Memorial Scholarship Fund.
