Lahner, Luella "Lue"

SHEFFIELD - Lue Lahner, 79, died Sunday (April 5, 2009) at the Hampton Health Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday (April 9, 2009) at First United Methodist Church, Sheffield, with the Rev. R. Karl Watkins presiding. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield.
Luella Marie Lahner was called to be with our Lord on Palm Sunday, April 5, 2009. She now joins her soulmate and husband of 49 years, Dale, who died in April, 1997.
With a zest for life, appreciation of fairness and a heart for giving, she will be most remembered for her generosity, energy and remarkable compassion.
She was born on Nov. 1, 1929, three days after the Black Monday stock market crash that is considered the start of The Great Depression. One of 12 children, Lue decided at a young age that personal possessions were not nearly as important to her as giving her possessions to those who needed them more. She consistently did this throughout her lifetime, helping to fund numerous charities and delivering Meals on Wheels with Dale. She was especially proud of her work as a Hospice volunteer.
Lue graduated from Sheffield High School in 1947 and married Dale in 1948. She worked as a telephone operator until their first daughter, Susan, was born the next year. Lue then worked at home and she and Dale raised eight children.
She found time to make sure her children were involved in everything from church to football.
Dale and Lue were members of the EUB and First United Methodist Churches for decades and they literally attended thousands of their children's and grandchildren's activities.
Her loves included gardening, bowling, laughing, all sports, music, playing cards and enjoying her family and friends.
No matter where Lue went, whether it was a stroll through the backyard or a trip to the zoo, she knew the name of every flower and plant that grew. Her flower gardens were like a rainbow, filled with beautiful colors and scents. Everyone that stopped by took home a bloom or slip of some kind of plant.
Her vegetable garden was bountiful and prosperous. Canning 300 quarts of green beans was typical while the harvest was in season. Growing up in a depression taught her that nothing would be wasted. She found a use for absolutely everything.
Lue was fond of sewing, crocheting and knitting. Her self-taught skills were put to good use not only for her family but for so many others. Her quilts were painstakingly hand-stitched with her loving hands.
She made clothes for her children that put "new" clothes to shame. She had an eye for flair and fashion and had pride in keeping her brood clean and well-mannered. Saturday nights were notorious for baths, hair washing, shining shoes and ironing. Everything had to be perfect for church on Sunday morning.
Until the day she died, her manners were impeccable, appreciating everything people did for her and everyone who helped her.
Lue is survived by eight children and their spouses - Michael and (Susan) Harris of Sheffield; Steve and Louanna Lahner of Clear Lake; David and Nancy Lahner of Boone; Mark and (Jeannie) Brandt of Baltimore, Md.; Mike and (Mary) Kranz of Clarion; Bill and Annette Lahner of Sheffield; David and (Anne) Foster of Shanghai, China; and Peter and Andra Lahner of Spring Hill, Kan.; three sisters, Sue Waggoner, Tilene Humphreys and Eileen Jewel; three brothers, Ed Siems, Dale Siems and Delbert Block; 30-plus grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a multitude of extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Ella Siems; father, August Siems; sister, Louise Romine; and brothers, Elmer Siems, Martin Siems, Dick Siems and Benny Siems.
The family has created a memorial in her honor, with contributions being made to the Alzheimer's Association at http://act.alz.org/goto/Lahner.
