Hudspeth, Kaylene Elaine (Reimers)
|
|
|
BRITT-
Kaylene Elaine (Reimers)
Hudspeth, 60, of Britt passed
away Friday (April 10, 2009) in
Britt.
Funeral services for Kaylene
Hudspeth will be held at 10:30
a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at St.
Benedict's Catholic Church in
St. Benedict with Father Henry
Huber officiating. Interment
will be in St. Benedict's
Cemetery .
Visitation will be held from 5
to 7 p.m. Monday, April 13, at
Ewing Funeral Chapel, 178 Center
St. W. in Britt.
Kaylene Elaine Hudspeth, the
daughter of Arthur and Darlene
(King) Reimers, was born Aug. 6,
1948, in Fort Dodge. Her
childhood years were spent in
the Duncombe and Webster City
areas where she received her
elementary education. The family
moved to Eagle Grove in 1962.
Kaylene graduated from Eagle
Grove High School with the class
of 1966. At the age of 40 she
attended North Iowa Area
Community College in Mason City
where she took accounting and
business classes.
Kaylene moved to Webster City in
1969 where she worked at
Franklin Manufacturing until
1974.
Kaylene married Terry S.
Hudspeth on Feb. 14, 1974, in
Webster City. Their marriage was
blessed with the births of three
children: Kerry Patrick,
Katherine Joel, and Scott
Terrance.
In 1974 the couple moved to St.
Benedict. Kaylene enjoyed being
a homemaker, mother, and for a
short time worked at Snap-On
Tools in Algona.
In 1978 they built their home in
Britt, and purchased Gibney Oil
Co. and changed the name to
Hudspeth Oil Co. Terry ran the
tank wagon and Kaylene did all
the bookkeeping from an office
they had in their home. She
began managing Britt Standard
Service in 1985 and continued
doing bookkeeping for both
businesses. They sold Hudspeth
Oil Co. to the Britt Co-op in
1992 and Kaylene began working
at General Foods (Kraft Foods)
in Mason City where she worked
until her retirement in 2005.
Kaylene and Terry moved to Mason
City in 1998 and resided there
until Terry's retirement from
his security guard position at
the Social Security
Administration. At that time
they moved to their lake home on
Tuttle Lake that they had
purchased in 1992.
Kaylene was a member of St.
Patrick's Catholic Church in
Britt where she had taught
catechism classes for several
years. She had also been a
member of the Catholic Daughters
where she served as treasurer.
She was a charter member of the
Britt Lioness Club. While living
in Mason City she belonged to
the Women of the Moose
organization.
She was diagnosed with
pancreatic head adenocarcinoma
in April 2008 shortly after she
and Terry had returned from
spending several months in
Mountain Home, Ark. Knowing she
faced a very aggressive cancer,
Kaylene chose quality over
quantity and proceeded to live
her life one day at a time.
Kaylene enjoyed reading and
creative writing. She especially
enjoyed entertaining family and
friends at the lake home. She
loved cooking family meals and
always had treats baked for the
grandchildren. She enjoyed
attending her grandchildren's
school activities. Kay Grandma
especially enjoyed the joy and
love her grandchildren brought
into her life. She felt truly

CLEAR
LAKE ? Mildred E. "Teeny"
Schuler, 86, was called to be
with her Lord when she passed
away peacefully Tuesday (April
7, 2009) at Mercy Medical
Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at
11 a.m. Tuesday, April 14, at

Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess
presiding. Internment will be in

Church cemetery located on the

services will be conducted next
summer.
Visitation will be held from 3
to 6 p.m. Monday, April 13 at
Ward-Van Slyke Funeral Colonial
Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in
Clear Lake.
Teeny was an energetic person
participating in many civic
causes and was always there to
help other people when needed.
She was a tireless worker for
various causes. She had an
appreciation of fairness, and
was quick to forgive with
remarkable compassion.
She was born on Dec. 7, 1922,
the seventh of 10 children of
Dr. Herbert W. and Helen
Gartside Hines in Chicago, Ill.
She spent her early childhood in
Springfield, Ill., graduating
from Springfield High School in
1940. She graduated from the
University of Iowa in 1946 with
a B.S. degree in nursing. While
continuing her nursing education
studying toward a masters degree
she worked as the head nurse for
Currier Hall dormitory. On June
4, 1948, she was married to
Louis E. Schuler, who was a
student at the University
College of Law.
The Schulers moved to Clear
Lake, where Mr. Schuler
commenced the practice of law
with Edward R. Boyle in the
summer of 1949. Teeny continued
her nursing career teaching at
Mercy Hospital McCauley Hall
nursing school. Later she became
school nurse for Clear Lake
public schools until the birth
of her third child in 1954,
after which she pursued
occasional nursing activities at
Mercy Hospital.
Teeny was a devoted mother to
all five of her children,
reading the Holy Scriptures,
classic literature as well as
playing good music to her young
family. She was proud of her
five children and their
educational achievement, all of
whom in their careers have
earned a total of nine college
degrees. While raising her
children, she will be remembered
for her generosity, energy, and
compassion, serving as the Clear
Lake PTA president.
After her children graduated
from school, she was chosen to
become one of the 10 teachers of
the Bethel series under the
tutelage of the Rev. Murley
Severtson, pastor of Zion
Lutheran Church. The Bethel
series covered both Old and New
Testament literature and
history.
She subsequently became
interested in politics, becoming
a district chairman of the
Republican Women's Club and
later becoming a member of the
state central committee of the
Republican Party in Iowa. She
was a tireless worker for Sen.
Grassley and Gov. Branstad in
their early careers. While
participating in local and state
politics, she was chosen as a
delegate to support Gov. Ronald
Reagan in his bid for the party
nomination at the 1976
Republican National Convention
held in Kansas City. Though
unsuccessful that year, through
efforts of staunch supporters
like Teeny, he eventually
succeeded in 1980. She later
became personally acquainted
with President Ronald Reagan and
President George H. W. Bush,
both for whom she was a tireless
worker.
After a long active period in
politics, Teeny became
interested in the Mason City
YMCA. She was a consistent fund
raiser and supporter of the
YMCA, serving in many capacities
including the Board of
Directors. She became a swimmer,
and avid racquetball player,
teaching young people
racquetball and challenging all
comers. She was volunteer of the
year in 1987 and won her women's
league a couple of years.
Throughout all of her various
activities, she was a loyal
supporter and fan of the Iowa
Hawkeyes in all of their sports
programs. Teeny was a member of
the Chi Omega sorority. She was
past president of the Clear Lake
chapter of the PEO and 20th
Century clubs.
Teeny spent most of her summers
at her parents' family cottage
on the shores of Lake Michigan.
She later became the owner,
along with her husband, of their
own cottage which she dearly
loved. The Schulers also spent
many winter vacations with the
dear friends, Hans and Inge
Sell, at Marco Island, Fla.
She is survived by her husband,
Louis E. Schuler; and her five
children, George Richard Schuler
of Clear Lake, Dr. Louis E.
Schuler, Jr. of Shawnee, Kan.,

"Ted" Schuler of Gainesville,
Va., Capt. Mark L. Schuler, Port
Charlotte, Fla., spouse Theresa,

Sandwich, Mass., and spouse
Kenneth; and seven
grandchildren; four brothers as
