HAMPTON - Jerome Jerry Hovenga, 67, of Hampton died Thursday (Sept. 18, 2008) at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

McNutt, Barbara  
 
MASON CITY - Barbara McNutt, 90, of Mason City died Friday (Sept. 19, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be at St. Ansgar Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the church service.
Memorials may be directed to the Barbara McNutt Memorial Fund.
Barbara M. McNutt was born on Jan. 31, 1918, in Hinton, the daughter of Rev. Walter Lloyd and Elva (Cullen) Breaw. She graduated from high school in Eagle Grove in 1935. After completing a two-year course in education at Drake University in Des Moines, she taught in the elementary grades at Moville, Primghar and Humboldt. In 1946 she moved to Portland, Ore., where she was church secretary at First United Methodist Church. Later she served as church secretary and office manager at Park Hill United Methodist Church in Denver, Colo., where she was employed for 12 years. On Dec. 10, 1960, she was united in marriage to Millard Brown McNutt. They resided on a farm in St. Ansgar until Millard's death on Nov. 28, 1991.
Barbara was a PEO member for 71 years and an active member of First United Methodist Church in Mason City.
She is survived by her children, Robert McNutt and wife, Sheri, of St. Ansgar; Dave McNutt and wife, Lois, of St. Ansgar; son-in-law: Royal Dohler of St. Ansgar; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and sister, Phyllis Kruse and husband, Kenneth, of Denver, Colo. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Millard in 1991; a daughter, Barbara Dohler, in 2006; sister, Madeline, who died in infancy; brother, Lt. Edwin Gordon Breaw, who gave his life for his country on Nov. 4, 1944, in World War II, and sister Metta Matthews, who died Aug. 7, 2001.

Ouverson, Jay Russell  
 
CLEAR LAKE - Jay Russell Ouverson, 71, of Clear Lake died Friday (Sept. 19, 2008) of a brain tumor diagnosed in September 2007.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Clear Lake United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N., with the Rev. Diana Hoover officiating. Interment will be at the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and also one hour prior to the service.
Memorials are suggested to Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
Jay Russell Ouverson was born Aug. 15, 1937, in Mason City, son of Leonard (Ding) and Ellen Mae (Westover) Ouverson. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1955 and farmed with his father. He joined the Air Force in February 1957 and was discharged in January 1963, in Empire, Mich., where he met his wife, Marty. He served in Sado Shima, Japan, during his service. He married Marty Lemen on June 17, 1961, in Traverse City, Mich. They moved back to Clear Lake briefly, then Mason City where he worked at Arnold's Motor Supply as a parts man and the Globe Gazette as an advertising salesman. He joined Mid America Publishing and was transferred to Spencer, Estherville and Jefferson. When the paper changed hands Jay worked at the Bee and Herald in Jefferson. Then they moved to Webster City where he worked for the Freeman Journal, PSI and Lambi Chevrolet until he retired in 2002 and moved to Clear Lake. He helped Dennis Preston on his farm until last fall when he became ill.
Jay enjoyed his family and grandchildren the most. He loved watching the NASCAR races. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, serving on several committees. He taught ALPHA classes several times at Asbury Methodist Church in Webster City and United Methodist Church in Clear Lake. He became certified as a lay leader which he was very proud of. For the last five years, he was a director, along with his wife, Marty, of Congregational Care at the church. He enjoyed calling on patients as he always was a "people" person.
They loved to camp in their motor home and spent the last five winters in Weslaco, Texas. He was a long time member of Kiwanis in Jefferson and Webster City.
Jay is survived by his mother, Ellen Mae Ouverson of Clear Lake; his wife of 47 years, Marty; three sons, Brian (Mary) from Stratford and their children, Spencer Ouverson of Boone, Emily Gallagher of Ames, Cassie of Fort Dodge and David, Dylan, and Mariah Trammell of Stratford; Todd of Clear Lake and his children, Stephanie and Casey Ouverson of Des Moines, his fiancee, Chris Dirks and her son, Braiden, and Eric (Elizabeth) from Webster City and their children Emma and Erin. He is also survived by sister, Dianne, and brother-in-law Marlin Miller of Clear Lake; brother-in-law, James Thomson and sister-in-law, Janet Thomson, of Traverse City, Mich.; brother-in-law, Ted Lemen, and sister-in-law, Cecile Lemen, of Denver, Colo.; his aunt, Lucile Westover, Clear Lake and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Ouverson.

Rice, Norman Lee "Jiggs"  
 
PLYMOUTH - Longtime Plymouth resident Norman "Jiggs" Lee Rice, 87, died Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A memorial service and celebration of life for Jiggs will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Plymouth United Methodist Church, 508 Carter St. in Plymouth, with the Rev. Wendy Johannesen officiating. Military honors will be conducted at the church after the service by members of the Edward Tosel American Legion Post No. 110, Manly. Inurnment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St., Manly. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time Wednesday at the church.
The family of Norman "Jiggs" Lee Rice has requested that those wishing to honor Jiggs with memorial contributions may wish to direct them to the Plymouth Volunteer Fire Department in his memory.
Jiggs was born on Nov. 25, 1920, in Britt, the son of Hugh Morton and Gladys Marie (Horstman) Rice. After attending Britt High School, he married Edith Mae Nelson in 1940. Jiggs and Edith went on to have four children. Jiggs and Edith were married for 30 years.
Jiggs was a World War II veteran, serving in the Army in the European Theater. After the death of Edith in 1970, Jiggs married Lorraine Ida Drebenstedt in 1972. Lorraine died in 1991.
Jiggs worked at implement dealers for John Deere and International Harvester in Britt. He then moved his family to Plymouth in 1952, and worked at Armour (Deckers) in Mason City for 25 years until it closed in 1974. He later worked at Winnebago Industries in Forest City for over seven years. He also farmed in Plymouth since 1960.
Jiggs was a wonderful man with a zest for life. He loved to sit in his carpeted garage and visit with friends and family over a cup of coffee or a bit of blackberry brandy. Jiggs cherished his many good memories, often pouring over photographs and reminiscing about the past. He had great compassion for his many animals, and those animals loved him.
Jiggs always lent a helping hand. He would tinker away on broken machines and miraculously make them work.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Linda Bass and her husband, Jim, of Mount Ranch, Calif., Margo Friemel and her husband, Patrick, of Bettendorf, and Alan Rice and his wife, Katy, of Ames; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a special friend, Bonnie Loterbauer, and many extended family members and friends.
Jiggs was preceded in death by his father, Hugh Morton Rice; his mother, Gladys Marie Horstman; stepfather, Ed Wallace; the mother of his children, Edith; his second wife, Lorraine; his daughter, Sharon Nehls and his sister, Virginia Rice.
Jiggs Rice had a twinkle in his eye and a spring in his step. He gave it his best, had lots of friends and lots of fun. He was one of a kind?.we will miss him so much.

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Luella Zanios Rumeliote, 91, passed away peacefully on Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2008) surrounded by family. Formerly of Mason City, Luella moved to Minneapolis to be close to her dearly loved family.
Preceded in death by the love of her life, husband Costa; parents James and Vasiliki (Bessie) Zanios and nine sisters and brothers, Marie Malakataris, Fala Soumas, Stella Pathoulas, Jean James, George Zanios, Tom Zanios, Gertrude Ringus, Elizabeth Paras and Chris Zanios.
She is survived by her daughters Tena Zahariades, Bloomington, Minn.; and Elaine Boosalis (James), Bloomington, Minn.; grandchildren Stephanie Stephenson (Sean) of Phoenix, Ariz., Krisanthya Reiman (Dean) of Elk River, Minn., Andrea Pfleider (Greg) of Plymouth, Minn. and Michael Boosalis (Maggie) of San Antonio, Texas; her four precious treasures, great-grandchildren Nicole Zahariades, Reinnen Pfleider, Tatum Pfleider and Samuel Stephenson. She is survived by one sister, Helen Berris of Detroit, Mich.
Born Aug. 7, 1917, in Mason City, Luella was one of 11 children. She married Costa D. Rumeliote in October 1938. Luella and her husband founded Costa's Supper Club in Mason City. After Costa's untimely death in 1955, she continued to operate the club until the late 1960s. She loved her family and enjoyed baking and cooking her special recipes for them and others.
Luella also loved gardening, playing cards with friends and family as well as being active in the hospitality business. She was involved in the Greek Orthodox Church both in Mason City and Minneapolis, and particularly enjoyed St. Mary's Seniors Group. She was limitless in her caring and nurturing.
The family would like to thank everyone at Mount Olivet Home and especially Jeff Schleif and the staff of the third floor, as well as Dr. Jennifer Olson of Park Nicollet Clinic.
A memorial prayer service was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at at St. Mary's Greek Orthodox Church, 3450 Irving Ave. S., Minneapolis, Minn.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Transfiguration, 1311 Second St. S.W., Mason City, with the Rev. Joseph Mirowski officiating. Trisagion prayer services will be held at 6 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 22, at the church. The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Internment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Schutter, Harry J.  
 
TITONKA - Harry James Schutter, 63, of Titonka, died Wednesday (Sept. 17, 2008) on his homestead, the same farm where he was born and spent his entire life.
A funeral Mass for Harry J. Schutter will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at St. John's Catholic Church, Bancroft with Father Paul D. Bormann officiating. Burial will be in Bingham Township Cemetery, rural Woden, with military honors conducted by the Titonka American Legion and VFW.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home, Titonka, with a Scripture prayer service beginning at 5 p.m. Further visitation will be one hour prior to the mass at the church on Monday.
Harry James Schutter was born Feb. 25, 1925, in German Valley, son of John and Martha (Bruns) Schutter. He attended German Township School and then farmed with his family before entering the service. Harry served in the Army from 1949 to 1953 serving as a corporal in the 196th Field Artillery.
On Feb. 3, 1960, Harry was united in marriage to Marcella Kelley at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. He farmed in German Valley until his retirement in 1992. Harry loved being with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Following retirement, he enjoyed wood carving and traveling with his wife. Harry was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Woden and later at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft.
Throughout the years he was involved with 4-H, the Knights of Columbus, Titonka VFW and American Legion.
He is survived by his wife Marcella of Titonka; two sons, John and his wife, Paula, of Lynnville and Joe and his wife, Kelly, of Lakota; six grandchildren, Crystal Price of Brooklyn, Heather Talbert and her husband, Mike, of New Sharon, Amanda Russel and her husband, Kyle, of New Sharon, and Jenna, Krista and Rachel Schutter all of Lakota; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Taylor of Algona and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Vernon Schutter.

MASON CITY - Lydia Katherine Elizabeth Grekoff, 84, of Mason City, died Friday (Sept. 19, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 2008, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 419 North Delaware Ave., with the Rev. Mark Lavrenz officiating.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. today, Monday, Sept. 22, 2008 at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave.

Lydia was born on Dec. 10, 1923 in Mason City, the daughter of Daniel and Katherine (Senner) Schultz. She graduated from Mason City High School.

On June 6, 1948, Lydia married George Grekoff in Mason City. She worked as a sales clerk for J.C. Penny Co. for more than 15 years. Lydia was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she was a member of Ladies Aid. She also belonged to other church groups as well. She enjoyed gardening and traveling with her husband.

Lydia is survived by her husband, George, of Mason City and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, David Schultz; two sisters in infancy, both named Mary.

Jay is survived by his mother, Ellen Mae Ouverson of Clear Lake; his wife of 47 years, Marty; three sons, Brian (Mary) from Stratford and their children, Spencer Ouverson of Boone, Emily Gallagher of Ames, Cassie of Fort Dodge and David, Dylan, and Mariah Trammell of Stratford; Todd of Clear Lake and his children, Stephanie and Casey Ouverson of Des Moines, his fiancee, Chris Dirks and her son, Braiden, and Eric (Elizabeth) from Webster City and their children Emma and Erin. He is also survived by sister, Dianne, and brother-in-law Marlin Miller of Clear Lake; brother-in-law, James Thomson and sister-in-law, Janet Thomson, of Traverse City, Mich.; brother-in-law, Ted Lemen, and sister-in-law, Cecile Lemen, of Denver, Colo.; his aunt, Lucile Westover, Clear Lake and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Ouverson.

Buzz enjoyed riding his Harley, camping, fishing, snowmobiling, working alongside his nephews, spending time joking and talking with everyone he met. He had a special place in his heart for Kim.

Brian will be greatly missed by his significant other, Kim Burkett; his mother, Lila Gruelke of Allison; sister, Verla and Todd Nolte of Dumont; sister, Lanette Benson of Allison; brother, David and Heather Benson of Waverly; eight nephews, Roger, Christopher, Derek, Trent, Dane, Jared, Gabriel and Sam; six nieces, Chasidy, Tonya, Hannah, Ivy, Hannah and Rachel, one great-nephew, Harley; two great-nieces, Hailey and Chloe; two step-children, Courtney and Luke and many uncles, aunts and cousins.

OSAGE - Beda B. Dodge, 85, of Osage, died Sunday (Sept. 21, 2008) at her home.

She was born on April 26, 1923, on a farm north of Little Cedar, the daughter of Wilbur and Mary (Penney) Elliott. Beda married Dean Dodge on Feb. 26, 1944. They lived on a farm southeast of Osage and farmed until retiring in 1982, when they moved to Osage. Dean died on Nov. 8, 2005.

Beda was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was a great caregiver, taking care of her ailing mother, elderly father and her disabled daughter. Beda was also faithful to follow her grandchildren in their sporting and music events and treasured those times.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 25, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Anna Blaedel officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24 at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

His survivors include a daughter, Ruth Dodge, Osage; a son, the Rev. Robert Dodge and his wife Brenda, Britt; six grandchildren, Beda Dodge of Elkhart, Ind., Kama Dodge of Waterloo, Timothy Dodge and his wife Hillary of Altoona, Kristin Volk and her husband Ryan of Altoona, Amy Dodge of Britt and Jeremy Dodge of Britt; two great-grandsons, Samuel Dodge and Caleb Volk and sister, Frances Morse of Osage.

WINNETKA, Ill. - George S. Marty, 78, of Winnetka, Ill., formerly of Mason City, Iowa, and Deerfield, Ill., passed away on Wednesday (Sept. 3, 2008).

A memorial service was held on Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Winnetka Congregational Church.

George was a graduate of Mason City High School, Class of 1948, graduated with a business degree from Northwestern University, served two years in the Navy during the Korean War and worked for 37 years for the Harris Trust and Savings Bank in Chicago, retiring as vice president of the Trust Department.

His lifelong love of golf and sailing brought him back to North Iowa and his North Shore Clear Lake cottage every summer of his life.

George is survived by Cynthia, his wife of 51 years; one son, Douglas; one daughter, Susan McDonnell and grandchildren, Timothy, Andrew, Jon and Katie McDonnell and Anneliese and Austin Marty.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Rita and George Marty and by his sister, Jean.

ST. ANSGAR - Charles Kenneth Warrington, 85, died on Friday (Sept. 19, 2008) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 1204 State St. in Osage, with the Rev. John Moser officiating. A luncheon will follow at the KC Hall, 1403 State St. in Osage. Burial will be in the St. Ansgar Cemetery following the luncheon.

Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home, 207 S. School St. in St. Ansgar with a 5 p.m. Scripture Service. His wish was to be cremated.

Charles (Chuck) was born on Oct. 30, 1922, on the family farm in rural St. Ansgar, the son of Frederick and Anna Delia (Monahan) Warrington. Chuck had one sister, Marcene (Heimerman). He was baptized and confirmed at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Chuck attended school in Oregon and St. Ansgar. He married Dixie Frank on Sept. 9, 1947, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage and to this union, seven children were born.

He farmed for many years and then began his woodworking hobby, making countless wood items for friends and family. He took great pleasure in spending time with his family and especially his 20 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Survivors include Dixie, his wife of 61 years; three sons, David and his wife Betty (Wilde) of Plymouth, Tom and his wife Amy (Thome) of West Bend, Dan and his wife Wanda (Mayer) of St. Ansgar; four daughters, Becky and her husband Dean Bartusek of Hanlontown, Donna and her husband Dave Capuzzi of Rochester, Minn., Sue and her husband John Hackenmiller of Burlington and Dawn and her husband Eric Tollefson of Charlotte; 20 grandchildren, Angi Smith, Holly Overturf, Eric Warrington, Ryan and Evan Bartusek, Brendt, Adam, Luke, Ross and Jordan Warrington, Elissa Berding, Joe and John Warrington, Jenna and Jamie Capuzzi, Tyler, Rachel and Claire Hackenmiller, and Walker and Wyatt Tollefson; 15 great-grandchildren; one sister, Marcene Heimerman of Stacyville and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family would like to give special thanks to all the doctors, nurses, aides, and caregivers who provided special care for Chuck in the past months.

Gary Allen Mestad, the son of Orval and Trina (Linne) Mestad, was born Feb. 14, 1946, at Mason City. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1964. He continued his education at NIACC in Mason City and graduated from Mankato State University in 1970 with a bachelor of science degree in elementary education.

On Aug. 15, 1970, he married Merikay Marth at First Methodist Church in Mason City. That same year they moved to Garner where Gary began teaching fifth grade at Garner-Hayfield Community Schools. The next year he moved to seventh- and eighth-grade social studies. He earned his MSE in education administration-secondary in 1997 at Drake University. He enthusiastically coached both boys' and girls' middle school sports and varsity softball before retiring in 2001. Gary took two softball teams to the state tournament. Sports, especially coaching, was a major part of his life. Gary enjoyed collecting records and CDs, going to the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake and listening to many kinds of music. He was an avid Buddy Holly and St. Louis Cardinals baseball fan.

He is survived by his parents, Orval and Trina Mestad of Clear Lake; a brother, Curtis Mestad of Clear Lake; an uncle, Henry (Donna) Linne of Coralville; and a cousin, Kathy Hanna of Boulder, Colo.

Gary was preceded in death by a nephew, Adam Benish.

MASON CITY - Loy O. Pike, 75, of Mason City peacefully joined his heavenly father on a beautiful morning Sunday (Sept. 21, 2008) at Good Shepherd Health Center.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday (Sept. 26, 2008) at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with Robert Orr officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

Loy was born April 13, 1933, in Osage (minutes after his twin brother Roy). His parents were Harold R. and Pearl (Naber) Pike. He graduated from Osage High School then went to work for Armour for 32� years. He also owned and ran Pike's Maid Rite with his wife and kids before retiring in 1985.

Loy married Clara (Pat) Prohaski and together they raised their four children.

Loy enjoyed taking his family on long summer vacations in their camper, giving his children the opportunity to visit almost every state in the United States. Sitting around the campfire with the Prohaski families making s'mores and singing songs late into the night at Yellow River Forest was an important weekend activity. He enjoyed the holidays when all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren gathered for a day of family togetherness. Loy also enjoyed fishing trips up north with his son and friends.

When Parkinson's disease was finally able to slow him down he began playing cards and putting puzzles together with his many friends at Good Shepherd. It was not unusual for Loy to "sneak off" on his scooter for a cruise around town, enjoying his freedom!

Loy was a positive man, despite what Parkinson's had done to his body, and he never missed a chance to joke around with the nurses and staff at Good Shepherd.

Loy is survived by his children, Lois Awe and husband, Allen, of Mason City, Deb Walkner of Mason City, James Pike and wife, Cindy, of Plymouth, Diana Padilla and husband, Hermeregildo, of Clear Lake; nine grandchildren, Jennifer, Brandi, Clair, A. Noble, Joshua (Rebecca), Gabriel, Denver (Angie), Drew and Darcie (Eusebio); 11 great-grandchildren, Jarrod, Lucas, Alea, Miracle, Brian, Orion, Angel, Adan, Alena, Trevor and Jacob; three brothers, Dean Pike and wife, Anna, of Houston, Texas, his twin brother, Roy Pike and wife, Shirley, of Marion, and Paul Pike and wife, Emily, of Ocala, Fla.; three sisters, Sharon Uhlenhopp and husband, Lynn, of Cedar Falls, Patsy Crowe and husband, John, of Vancouver, Canada, and Shannon Miller and husband, Tom, of Ocala, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one brother, Darrell Pike.

Vince was born on Dec. 22, 1953, in Albert Lea, Minn., the son of James and Doris (Anderson) Tweed. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. Vince attended and graduated from Lake Mills High School in 1972, following which he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. Vince served two years and was honorably discharged.

On Nov. 29, 1975, Vince was united in marriage with Amy Willert at Salem Lutheran Church, and the family made their home in Joice, Iowa. Vince was a tool and die maker by trade, working at Midway Tooling in Lake Mills until 1994 when the family moved to New York.

Vince had been employed at CMP Industries in Albany, for the past 5� years as a tool and die maker, where he was also chief steward. He was the president of Local Union No. 838, and was a member of the Otto/Chose Post No. 235. Vince was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Albany.

He enjoyed spending time with his granddaughters, who were his pride and joy. His hobbies included hunting with his father, fishing, watching sporting events, and attending car races in Brainerd, Minn.

Survivors include his loving wife of 33 years, Amy (Willert) Tweed; his loving daughter and son-in-law, Erin and Eric Wood of Colonie, N.Y.; his cherished granddaughters, Kirstin and Hailey Wood; parents, James and Doris Tweed of Lake Mills; sister, Jennifer Tweed of Des Moines; mother-in-law, Iva Willert of Lake Mills; sister-in-law, Ruth Furness of Lake Mills; brother-in-law, Edward (Deb) Willert of Shell Rock; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Carl Willert; and brother-in-law, Jerry Furness.

MASON CITY - Robert R. "Bob" Burns Jr., 81, of Mason City died Monday (Sept. 22, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Faith Baptist Church, 1807 S. Kentucky Ave., with Pastor Steven Cox of Clear Lake Regular Baptist Church and Pastor Jeff Dahlin of Praise Community Church officiating. Interment will be held in Memorial Park Cemetery with veterans honors conducted by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., and also one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the Robert R. Burns Jr. Memorial Fund in care of the family.

Robert was born Jan. 3, 1927, in Elm Creek, Neb., the son of Robert R. Sr. and Pearl (Case) Burns. He attended school in Brooklyn, Iowa, and graduated from there in 1945. He entered the Army in 1951 and served his country until he was honorably discharged in 1953.

He was married to Joy Lathrop on April 14, 1962, in Kirksville, Mo., and to this union four children were born. Bob worked as a land surveyor for the Iowa D.O.T. for 30-plus years until his retirement. After retirement Bob started his own private land surveying business which he ran until 1999.

He enjoyed nature, bird watching, gardening, flowers, listening to Southern gospel music and also playing board games. He also liked camping with his family in his younger years and enjoyed traveling the country. Bob cherished his family and the time he spent with them. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is survived by his wife, Joy, of Mason City; children, Ginny Kruger and husband, Terry, of Fort Dodge, Vicki Hearn and husband, Keith, of Plymouth, Robert G. Burns and wife, Martha, of Clear Lake, and Randy Burns and wife, Tammy, of Rockwell; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; brothers, Norman Burns and wife, Maxine, of Brooklyn, Iowa, Gerald Burns and wife, Mary, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; sister-in-law Joanna Lasof and husband, Mark, of Vancouver, Wash.; mother-in-law Della Brungardt and husband, Henry, of Mason City; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, father-in-law, one great-grandson, two brothers and two sisters.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Austin, Minn., with the Rev. Jon Bitter officiating. Interment is at Grandview Cemetery, Austin, Minn., with military honors by American Legion Post 91.

Gilbert, Betty Lou "Rusty"  
 
Betty Lou "Rusty" Gilbert, 80, formerly of Ottumwa, died Monday (Sept. 22, 2008) at the Lake Mills Care Center in Lake Mills.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Winnebago Lutheran Church, rural Lake Mills, with Pastor Bill Peters officiating. Cremation will follow the service, with inurnment at a later date.

Visitation will be one hour prior to services Sunday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Central Iowa, or to the donor's choice.

Betty Lou "Rusty" Ashenhurst was born March 5, 1928, to Harry and "Katie" Ashenhurst in Lamoni, Iowa.

Rusty graduated from Swaledale High School in 1946. She married Harry Gilbert on Feb. 22, 1948, and had two sons, Stephen and Michael.

Harry was a police officer in Lake Mills for seven years, six of which he served as chief of police. Rusty used her artistic ability and went to work for the Graphic Publishing Co. Rusty was known throughout the community as the talented lady who painted local children's portraits and helped photographer John Carlson pose bridal parties.

Harry and Rusty were the administrators of the Winnebago County Home from 1969 to 1979. Rusty became an LPN in 1971.

In February 1979, Harry and Rusty moved to Fairfield, Iowa, to become the administrators of the Jefferson County Care Facility.

In 1992 they moved to Ottumwa, Iowa. Rusty retired and Harry continued to work at the care facility. Harry passed away in 1995 after 47 years of marriage. Rusty lived in her home in Ottumwa until April of 2008 when she moved to the Parkview Care Center in Fairfield, Iowa. She moved again on Sept. 19, 2008, to the Lake Mills Care Center to be closer to friends and family and died at peace on Sept. 22, 2008.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sister.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Stephen Gilbert and wife, Dana, of Bloomfield, Conn.; son, Michael Gilbert and wife, Cindy Faith, of Salem, Ore.; grandchildren, Jessica Gilbert of Philadelphia, Pa., Ashley (Gilbert) Knoecklein of Philadelphia, Pa., Melissa (Gilbert) Poncelet Del Sole of Little Falls, N.J., Stephanie Gilbert of Sacramento, Calif., Audra Gilbert of Seattle, Wash., and Cpl. Jonathon Gilbert serving in Afghanistan.

Former Clear Lake resident Walter B. Pedelty Jr. passed away on March 23, 2008, at his home in Cassville, Mo. A private family inurnment will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Clear Lake Municipal Cemetery.

Mr. Pedelty, son of Walter B. and Hazel (Hill) Pedelty, was born on April 11, 1919, in Mason City. He was united in marriage on April 11, 1942, in Nevada to his wife, Pauline, who preceded him in death five years ago.

Walter was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during World War II. He enlisted immediately upon graduation from high school and served four years on the USS Tern. Following his discharge he worked for his uncle driving a produce truck in California. He was drafted back into the Navy and was a plank holder on the USS Porterfield which was launched on June 13, 1943.

Upon his return from the Navy, he was an over-the-road truck driver for several years. From 1968 until 1980 he was the fleet manager for Winnebago Industries in Forest City, Iowa. He and his wife, Pauline, retired 28 years ago and moved to Cassville, Mo., to make their home.

Walter will be remembered for his quick smile, intelligence and humanity.

Survivors include one nephew, Jerould Pedelty and his wife, Judy, of St. Ansgar, Iowa; one niece, Marilyn Parsons of Urbandale, Iowa; and four great-nephews: Spencer Parsons, Zackary Parsons, Eli Pedelty and Isaac Pedelty.

FREMONT, Calif. - Raymond B. Swalve, 86, of Fremont, Calif., formerly of Garner, died Friday (Sept. 19, 2008) at his home in Fremont.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner with the Rev. David Graham officiating. Burial will be in Ell Township Cemetery in Klemme with military rites by the Klemme Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Raymond B. Swalve, the son of John and Wilhelmina (Sandersfeld) Swalve, was born Jan. 5, 1922, on a farm south of Klemme. He graduated from Klemme High School in 1940. Raymond served his country in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.

On May 14, 1947, he married Lorraine Knoll. They made their home in Garner until the summer of 1970 when they moved to Fremont, Calif. Raymond was employed with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in San Francisco where he last served as deputy chief appraiser. During this employment he received an outstanding performance award and achieved the grade of GS14. After retiring in 1985, he and Lorraine remained in Fremont. He was a skin and lung cancer survivor.

He was a member of Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ in Klemme during his early life and later was a member of Zion Evangelical and Reformed Church in Garner. Raymond sang in the choir for many years, served as a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent, deacon, elder and was on three different pulpit committees.

Raymond is survived by his nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his soul mate, Lorraine, Dec. 20, 2001; his parents; brother, Harold Swalve; and sister, Wilma Cline.

MASON CITY - George White, 87, of Mason City entered into eternal life Monday (Sept. 22, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at the New Hope Christian Church in Marshalltown.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 25, at the Pursel-Davis Funeral Home, 405 W. Main St., Marshalltown.

George William White was born Dec. 2, 1920, in New Providence, Iowa, the son of Levi Wellington and Annie Laura (McCracken) White. He graduated from Whitten High School in 1939 and that fall enlisted in the Navy where he served for six years. He served as a hospital corpsman during World War II and rose to chief pharmacist's mate before discharge.

George was united in marriage to Margaret Schwarck on June 28, 1942, in Waynesville, Mo. He graduated from Logan Basic College of Chiropractic in 1954 with a doctor of chiropractic degree.

George and Marg eventually made their home in Marshalltown for more than 40 years where he was a member of the New Hope Christian Church and served in many leadership positions.

He had a passion for missions and youth, serving on the board of the N.E. Iowa Christian Camp for more than 20 years. George retired from Fisher Controls in 1983. For the last four years George had lived in Mason City, Iowa, and had been a member of the Church of Christ there.

George is survived by his son, Ronald (Karen) White of Stewartville, Minn.; his daughter, Judith (Alan) Sheldon of Mason City; his son Larry (Marsha) White of Indianapolis, Ind.; his son Kevin (Bonnie) White of Rochester, Minn.; his brother James (Helen) White, Loveland, Colo.; his brother Levi White, Jefferson City, Mo., his 11 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

George was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; brother, Arthur Dale White; and his grandchildren, Craig White and Timothy White.
