Shull, Jesse Francis

MASON CITY - Jesse Francis Shull, 84, of Mason City, died Thursday (Sept. 4, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today (Saturday, Sept. 6) at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Interment will be at the Sheffield Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield with military honors performed by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.

Memorials may be directed to the Jesse Shull Memorial Fund.

Jesse Francis Shull was the third of five children. He was born on July 20, 1924, to Jesse Franklin and Annetta (Deshler) Shull on a farm in the small community of Glen Elder in west central Kansas. His mother wanted him named after his father but did not want him to be called Junior so she chose the second name of Francis instead of his father's middle name of Franklin. He was called Francis by all who knew him.

The Shull family moved to Iowa in March of 1933 to a farm south of Dougherty and this was home to Jesse Francis until Dec. 14, 1942, at which time he enlisted in the Navy. Because our country was at war at that time, his enlistment was for the duration of World War II.

When Francis was honorably discharged he returned to his parents' home, which at that time was in Sheffield. His father was no longer farming as his three sons had enlisted and he had sustained an auger injury which incapacitated him. Since farming was the only occupation Francis knew, his transition from the military to civilian life necessitated a change in his occupation and at the urging of a local painter he became an interior/exterior decorator.

He worked for and with several painters until his apprentice period was over and started his own business in 1970. Francis retired in 2000 after 52 years due to ill health.

In 1952, Francis married Jeanne Thurston and they had 56 years of beautiful memories to share with each other. They were both avid golfers and enjoyed many years of circuit husband/wife tournaments in the surrounding territory.

Francis was a member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed being a Christian and a part of the church family.

He leaves to mourn in his passing from this life his beloved wife, Jeanne Shull of Mason City; one sister, Doris Imerman of Newell; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Brouwer and husband, Duane, of Iowa Falls; many nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, great-grandnieces and great-grand-nephews and a multitude of friends, all of whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Richard (Margie) Shull and Lowell (Lucille) Shull; and one sister, Joyce Bosma (Alfred James).

Arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home and Crematory, 641-423-0924.

Virgel Dean was one of five brothers born to Lawrence and Catherine (Steenblock) Winters on March 4, 1928, in Mason City. He attended school in Mason City. During his youth, he was the number one paperboy, selling papers in Central Park. He would take his money so he could attend the matinee at the theater and would spend his nickel on popcorn and then have to walk home. But boy, did he love the movies and he idolized Gene Autry even to this day. He then worked for Ideal Laundry and Cleaners before he spent 31 years as a sweeper operator and other jobs at Lehigh Portland Cement Company. He retired in 1984.

In the evenings after work, he would work on stock cars. He could fix just about anything mechanical. He had the adage of doing it right the first time. He collected his "Junk Gold Mine" of antique car parts, frying pans, and Danbury Mint collectable cars along with a lot of other things. He had a big heart and would help anyone especially his kids, and his pride and joy were his grandchildren.

Virgel would love to share his stories of the "Good Old Days" with everyone. Even in the last few years of his life, he was very appreciative of all the help that he received from his children and spouses.

For the past 57 years, he has celebrated his life with his wife Bette "Davis" who he married on June 24, 1951, and raised their seven children.

Bette, his wife, survives him along with his two daughters, Sandra "Sam" Field and Victoria and her husband Barry Rowe all of Marble Rock; five sons, Mike, Mason City, Barry and his wife Jackie, Marble Rock, Willard "Will" and his wife Tina, Klemme, Tracy and his wife "Heather", Rockford and Jamie and his wife Misty, of Austinville; seventeen grandchildren, Kelly, Jason, Alby, Jessica, Mindy, Gage, Wesley, Dalton, Nathan, Katie, Nicole, Dereck, Christopher, Coby, Cortney, Isabella, and Mary Ann; ten great-grandchildren, Kerri, Kole, Hayley, Levi, Hunter, Zach, Colton, Devon, Taylor and Jack; one brother, Ted and his wife Sandy Winters, Marble Rock and many many nieces and nephews along with a host of friends.

His parents; three brothers, Richard, Jerry and Marvin and one grandson, Douglas Wayne Best, preceded him in death.

Gossman Jr., Duane K. "Bud"

FOREST CITY - Duane K. Gossman Jr., 56, of Forest City, died Saturday (Sept. 6, 2008) at Palmer Health Center in West Union, following a motorcycle accident.
Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008, at St. James Catholic Church in Forest City, Father Henry Huber officiating. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery in Buffalo Center.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and an hour prior to service at the church.
Duane was born in Buffalo Center, on April 9, 1952, the eldest son of Duane Gossman Sr. and Lila Arndt. The family were sharecroppers in Thompson at the time and Bud spent his first 18 years on the farm. Three sisters and a brother would follow him.
He started out life experiencing its hardships early on, he had a pyloric obstruction at birth and required surgery at 6 weeks old, weighing less than his birth weight. Later Bud will develop asthma which he had difficulty with his whole life. Bud attended school at Thompson Community School and despite his asthma, was able to participate in track.
After high school, he did a brief seasonal job at Green Giant in Blue Earth, Minn., and then went to work at Winnebago Industries, where he remained for the rest of his time. He was employee No. 26 at the time of his death. Bud married Sandy Christensen early on and they had a daughter Dawn. After their divorce, Bud met and married Deborah Haverly and to this marriage were born his daughters, Brianne and Morgan. This ended in divorce and Bud remained out on the acreage southwest of Forest City.
Bud seemed to take on life head-on, but remained the peacemaker. His heart was as big as they come - Bud chose to wear his just above his waist. He was the person who would get the call that someone was stuck along the road, or they needed help moving, or they wanted help. Bud always responded and never let people down.
His life was littered with hardships that would knock the normal person down, but his sentiment runs deep and he was known for keeping most everything to remind him of the good times of his life. In later years he would start suffering from a series of illnesses that eventually contributed to his untimely death.
He leaves behind his three daughters, Dawn (John) Bodenham, of Mount Pleasant; Brianne Gossman, of Eagen, Minn. and Morgan Gossman, of Forest City; his parents, Duane K. Gossman Sr. of Thompson, and Lila Gossman of Buffalo Center; three sisters, Bridget Neilon (Jerry Hanson) of Northwood, Diane Penning, of Alden, Minn., and Linda (Mark) Kemmerer, of Clear Lake; a brother, Kent (Karana) Gossman, of Renton, Wash.; and two grandchildren, Adam and Aaron; and many, many friends.
He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents; and a nephew, Jarrett Roberts.
He will be sadly missed by all.
