Adams, Robert Payne

DENVER - Robert Payne Adams, 58, publisher of the Denver Forum and Stacyville Monitor Review, died suddenly over the weekend at his home in Denver, Iowa.

Bob started the Forum newspaper in Denver in 1976 with his brother, Kim, now publisher of the Jesup Citizen Herald.

He recently won a first place award from the National Newspaper Association for writing a personal series of articles that were published in several Iowa and Minnesota newspapers. The series was his first-person viewpoint of his successful struggle with bladder cancer three years ago.

Over the years, he and his newspapers have won over a hundred awards from the Iowa Newspaper Association.

Bob will be buried this weekend in a small cemetery on the shores of Lake Alexander, Minn., where his best lifetime memories occurred at the family's lake cottage.

All Iowa publishers are invited to a memorial service for Bob in Denver, Iowa, next week.

The memorial gathering will be from 1:30 to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Community Center, City Hall in Denver, Iowa.

Survivors include his brother, Kim Edward Adams, 415 Third St., Jesup, IA 50648; 319-827-1128; publisher@jesupcitizenherald.com; and his sister, Char Adams, 8533 Cortland Road, Eden Prairie, MN 55344.

Andrews, Candice S. "Candii"

ALEXANDER - Candice "Candii" S. Andrews, 31, of rural Alexander, died Tuesday (Nov. 18, 2008) at the Belmond Medical Center, Belmond.

Public visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 22, 2008, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E. Belmond. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery near Rowan.

A private family funeral service will be held Saturday at the Andrews Funeral Home, Belmond, with the Rev. Nancy Hofmeister officiating. Those wishing to consider expressing their sympathies through a memorial in Candice's name may wish to consider Hospice of Wright County, Candii's family, or to the donor's choice.

Candice "Candii" Sue Andrews, the daughter of Verlynn and Lyn (VerHelst) Andrews, was born Dec. 17, 1976, at Belmond. She was one of three children to bless this union which also includes her brother, Shawn, and sister, Laura Andrews.

Candii was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy following a birth accident. Though every aspect of her life was touched with this disability, it did not define her. She loved to tease family and friends, especially her home health aides Brenda, Sarah and Teresa.

She also laughed easily, found joy in the little things and loved hard. She taught all the true definitions of kindness, humanity and love. All who had the honor to witness it will miss her smile, joyful presence and sweetness. Candii was the light of Christ to many and a joy to all.

Candii attended Hampton-Dumont special education for many years. She had numerous hobbies and loves, including playing with her niece, teasing, watching movies (especially romance and scary) and collecting snow globes. A favorite place to visit was Mount Rushmore.

Candii loved laughing and playing games, especially Uno. She loved being surrounded by family, Nancy Drew mysteries, anything purple, warm socks and her puppy, Keebler.

Candii was fond of watching TLC Channel and a favorite show was "What Not To Wear." She looked forward to dining out, especially if it included a trip to a Chinese restaurant.

Candii's presence will be missed in the lives of her parents, Verlynn and Lyn Andrews, of Alexander; her brother, Shawn Andrews and sister-in-law, Tawnda Andrews; and her niece, Evelyn Andrews, all of Mapleton, Minn.; her sister, Laura Andrews, of Sheffield, and soon-to-be brother-in-law, Brandon Bird, of Sheffield; grandma, Maurine VerHelst, of Belmond; Grandma, Enid Andrews, of Belmond; and many extended family and friends.

Candii was preceded in death by her paternal grandpa, Vergene Andrews; and maternal grandpa, Kenneth VerHelst.

Ronald was born on Oct. 22, 1927, to Clarence "Bub" and Merle (Tapager) Burdick of Lake Mills. He was raised on the family farm and attended Bristol country school and graduated from Lake Mills High School with the class of 1945.
On Feb 4, 1951, he married Noreen Elaine Vinge at Lime Creek Lutheran Church, rural Emmons, Minn. They made their home on the Burdick farm, where they lived their entire married lives. Although the village is gone, Ronald was the self-proclaimed "Mayor of Bristol" carrying this through to even meeting the Lord Mayor of Bristol, England, in his chambers.
Ronald had a lifelong love of farming and exemplified, successful farming practices. He was widely known for raising delicious sweet corn and was always so generous with it. An avid outdoorsman, Ronald spent many years hunting, especially for pheasant and deer. He and Noreen made many fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada. Ronald's love of hunting and fishing led him to teach his children and grandchildren to enjoy the outdoors as well.
Ronald was a perfectionist when it came to refinishing antiques, building furniture, and repairing Noreen's auction finds. Reading fiction, the daily newspapers, and following sports were some of Ronald's passions. He was always well-versed with the news and current events. He had a gift for telling jokes and always displayed a great sense of humor.
In their early years, Ronald and Noreen enjoyed dancing, playing cards, going to the movies and out for dinner frequently with friends. Throughout their married lives, Ronald and Noreen traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad. Seeing new sights and meeting new people were highlights of these trips. One of Ronald's favorite memories was asking people if they had ever met someone who had flown on the Concorde.
Ronald was a lifelong member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Lake Mills. He was proud of his English and Danish heritage and of his active involvement in the Democratic Party over the years. Having three grandsons brought great joy to Ronald's life.
Ronald is survived by three children, Bruce and his wife, Diane Burdick, of Lake Mills, Nancy and her husband, Gary White, of Independence, Mary Nell Fullerton of Mason City; three grandsons, Tyler and Thomas Burdick of Lake Mills and Samuel Fullerton of Mason City. Ronald is also survived by a brother, Blaine C. "Jim" and his wife, Brigette, of Excelsior, Minn.; two sisters, Mary Joy Norton and Carmen Boyington of Bandera, Texas. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Heinzerling, Delila Josephine

MASON CITY - Delila Josephine Heinzerling, 73, of 1615 South Carolina, Mason City, died Saturday (Nov. 22, 2008) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City with her girls at her side. Her battle with Lewy Body Dementia is now over, and Lila is at peace in Heaven with Butch.
A funeral service for Lila will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 26, 2008, at the Wesley United Methodist Church, 1405 Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Steve Hansen officiating. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 122 West, Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 4 until 7 p.m. with a time of remembrance service at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third Street N.E., Mason City. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the church.
Delila Josephine Bennett was born on Feb. 24, 1935, in Pocatello, Idaho. Lila spent her childhood with her parents, Elmer and Louise Martin, and sister, Barbara, in Idaho, Nevada, California, Virginia, and finally Iowa. She spoke of taking the troop train to Iowa after the war. She attended the old Monroe Junior High School and graduated from Mason City High School in 1954, the year Meredith Willson wrote the Mason City High School fight song. In 1955 she married the love of her life, Earl Conrad "Butch" Heinzerling. Their daughters, Cherie and Karen arrived shortly after. Their third daughter, Joyce, was born after they moved into their lifetime home at 1615 South Carolina.
Lila worked at the Younkers cosmetic counter when the girls were young. After that she found her dream job as a para-professional with the Mason City School District. The children at Grant, Madison and Harding were her "kids". The students, along with her great many friends in the faculty at these schools, meant the world to her. She retired at the age of 70 and returned to Harding again the following school year to become "Grandma Lila" through the Foster Grandparent Program. Her retirement present, a black and white Shih Tzu she named Muffin, brought her great joy and became her fourth daughter.
After Butch's unexpected death in 1985, Lila embraced her life with her children and grandchildren. She was a great cook, making regular meat and potatoes meals, with always too much food. She enjoyed sitting at the head of the table and sharing in the laughter that came with the family gatherings. She embraced Christmas and was reluctant to open any of her presents until she'd seen everyone else open the many items she had chosen for them. She will always be known for making the greatest homemade sour cream chocolate cake.
Lila enjoyed her monthly card club group and was a member of the VFW Women's Auxiliary.
Lila's beloved and devoted sister, Barbara Heinzerling, was always there for her and was her Saturday night, after church, dinner companion for many years. After Lila's move to the I.O.O.F. home, Barb continued to visit Lila throughout the week and the two sisters would share the latest news of their families.
Lila was a very strong woman who instilled an amazing bond in her daughters. This bond is what guided Cherie, Karen and Joyce through Lila's battle with Lewy Body Dementia. Cherie, Karen and Joyce will always be indebted to their mother for the strength and compassion she allowed them.
Those left to cherish Lila's memory are her children, Cherie (Bryan) Molander of Mason City, Karen (William) Thomson of Mason City, and Joyce (Jack) Odegaard of Mason City; seven grandchildren, Suzanne Molander, Jason (Krissy) Molander, Adam, Ryan and Benjamin Harrer, and Lindsay and Callie Odegaard; a great-grandson, Christopher Molander; a sister, Barbara Heinzerling of Mason City; her godchildren, Gail Hanson and Kenneth Heinzerling; in-laws, Pat Heinzerling, Glen (Dallas) Heinzerling, Phyllis Marshall, Dean (Jan) Heinzerling, Maxine (Harold) Hanson and Doris (Dale) Kaus; as well as many nieces and nephews, as well as many other extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Earl, who died on June 19, 1985; two brothers-in-law, Elmer and Carl Heinzerling; and her mother and father-in-law, Ruby and William Heinzerling.
