Baker, Velma P. "Babe"

MASON CITY - Velma "Babe" P. Baker, 92, of 741 S. Illinois Ave., died Thursday (Nov. 13, 2008) at the Good Shepherd Care Center.
A memorial service and celebration of Babe's life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave. in Mason City.
Velma "Babe" Baker, born April 25, 1916, in Dayton, Iowa, was the third of four children born to Robert M. and Elizabeth A. (Desch) Umsted.
She grew up and graduated from Dayton High School in 1934. While a student, she was a gifted athlete, and developed a love of sports that remained with her through out her entire life.
She was married to Cecil "Red" R. Baker on Jan. 1, 1936, at Fort Dodge. During their married lives they lived in several communities including Armstrong, Livermore, LuVerne (where their children grew up and graduated), Emmetsburg, Dayton, and lastly settling in Mason City in 1979. She resided at the Pilgrim Place apartments from 1987 until October of this year. She remained active until just recently when ill health prompted her move to the Good Shepherd.
During her lifetime, Babe held many jobs. She was an accomplished sewer, a great cook, and a fierce competitor at any card game, especially cribbage. Many a grandchild challenged her to a game only to regret it after she skunked them. In their earlier years, Babe and Red spent many happy hours fishing and going to dances. She especially loved baseball, and cheered for the New York Yankees all of her life, rarely missing their games on television. She was also a devoted fan of the Hawkeye basketball team, and also followed them via televised games. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mason City, her faith and church family being an important force in her life.
With love and devotion she was Red's caretaker during the years of his declining health. Of all her life's jobs and undertakings, Babe would have told you without hesitation that her greatest joy and source of pride was raising her three children. She dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always happy to hear from them and to know how their lives were going.
Survivors include her daughter, Karen J. Bird and husband Jim of Mason City; son, Mick Baker and wife Sally of Mason City, and daughter-in-law Cathie Baker of New Brighton, Minn. Also surviving her are her grandchildren: R. Diane Shanafelt of Sioux City, Donna Stolze of Sioux City, Jennifer Koehler of Silver Bay Minn., Bradley Baker of Minneapolis Minn., Susan Kral of Mason City, Andrew Baker of Eden Prairie, Minn., Chris Baker of Oxford, Iowa, and one sister Dorothy Schill of Weslaco, Texas. She is also survived by many great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins, including one very special cousin, MaryLou Strandberg (affectionately referred to as "sister of my heart") from Dayton. Others who will miss Babe are her special "family" and friends at Pilgrim Place.
She was preceeded in death by her brother Bobby in childhood, her parents, her husband Cecil R. "Red" Baker, her son Donald R. Baker, a grandson Donald Robert Baker Jr. in infancy, a great-grand daughter Leah Diane Shanafelt in infancy, and her sister Irene King.
Babe's last wish was to die in comfort and peace. With many family members beside her, and with the loving and skilled care of the staff at Good Shepherd and the Hospice care team, this gift was granted. With hearts full of gratitude, the family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to all these people and pray God's continued blessings upon each and every one of you.
Arrangements are with Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, 641-423-0924.

Fullerton, Maxine F. "Mick"

ROCKFORD - Maxine F. "Mick" Fullerton, 82, of 301 W. Main, Rockford, died Thursday afternoon (Nov. 13, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 17, at the First United Methodist Church, 21 Third St. N.W., Rockford with the Rev. Judy Wooton officiating. Interment will be next to Roger at Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Fullerton Schumburg Funeral Home, 302 W. Main, Rockford.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the First Methodist Church, Rockford Fossil Park, or the Fire Department all of Rockford.
Thoughts, condolences, and stories may be shared with the family through the www.Fullertonfh.com Web site.
Maxine Fay was born on Mar. 9, 1926, in Marble Rock to Jonathan "Joney" and Ruby (Buckingham) Laudner. Maxine was the fifth of 11 children born into the family. After several years in Marble Rock, the Laudners moved to Rockford, and it was there that Maxine (or "Mick" as she was often called) received her education. She graduated from Rockford High School with the Class of 1943. Previous to her graduation she resided with close friend and mentor, Helen Walker and family. In her senior year, she enrolled in the Normal Training program, completing it by taking the extra required classes following graduation.
For two years, Maxine taught at the Owen Center School. She then moved to Washington, D.C., to work in the Pentagon during the war. She returned to Rockford and with her sister Lorraine, shared teaching responsibilities at the little brick schoolhouse just west of Charles City.
On Aug. 1, 1947, the Rev. Charles Fort of Sheffield, who had officiated at Maxine's baptism and confirmation in Rockford, returned to perform the marriage ceremony for her and Roger James Fullerton, which took place in the apartment home of her friend Helen Walker. The newly married couple occupied an apartment in the same building for some time after their marriage. Mick worked along with Roger at Mosher Electric, which they had purchased from Virgil Mosher for the first five years and then "retired" to become a full-time mom for her two growing children, Anne and Jim. After seeing her children off to college, she returned to her bookkeeping duties at the store for the next 20 years. Both she and Roger were greatly pained by the closing and selling of the store. Over the many years as business people in Rockford, and serving countless customers in the store and at their homes, they felt remorse at the need to close their business and the impact it would have on the town and surrounding area.
Maxine's church work has always been a vital part of her life. Early on, she participated in the church as Bible and Sunday school teacher and as a M.Y.F. leader. Her involvement also included board chairwoman, financial secretary, treasurer, chairman of finance, stewardship, and auditing committee. Several times she was chairman of the pastor-parish committee, evangelism committee, and the administrative board. Her greatest challenge was being chairman of the Christmas children's program balancing home, lots of kids, and church work at that busy season.
Mick had a special place in her heart working with the women of the church and was past president of the UMW for four years, served as circle chairman and for many many years, and was the UMW treasurer. Along with her local work in the church she served on the district and conference in many capacities and was on the Iowa conference nomination committee. Her work with the woman of the church aided so many people not only in the church, but Rockford, the nation and internationally as the monies raised in a small town in Iowa went to help women all around the world doing missions.
Mick also had time for herself. She and Roger were some of the first families to help build the Rockford Golf Course and many Saturday nights were spent at potlucks and special golf events. She was quite a golfer in her time and won the club championship several times. Once a year she would get Roger to quit work for a week and take the kids somewhere to get away, most often to Clear Lake with her sister and her family. Even though the guys went back to work she made sure everyone had fun. Mick also was the family caregiver and nursed many relatives on both sides back to health or was at their sides when they died.
Mick followed football and enjoyed the Vikings and Hawkeyes but most especially loved to yell at the TV when the Hawks were playing basketball or the political debates were on. This year was no exception. She was a voracious reader and enjoyed reading her Daily Word, Upper Room, and both newspapers. Her Bible was well worn, earmarked and underlined.
Those who will hold dear the memory of a mom, sister and friend include her two children, Anne and her husband Steve High, Dodge City, Kan., and Jim and his wife Kelly, Mason City; her nine grandchildren, Morgan and her husband David Lemen and their daughter, Rylee, the only great-grandchild, Taylor High, Samuel, Alyssa, and Taylor Fullerton, Olivia, Annika, Benjamin and Ella; sisters, Wava Uker, Sheffield, Sandra (Daisy) and her husband George West, Palm City, Fla., Dianne Massee, Rockford, Ill.; brothers, Delbert and his wife Mary Lou Laudner, Larry and his wife Mary Laudner all of El Cajon, Calif., Marvin (Pete) and his wife Eileen Laudner Corcoran, Minn.; sisters-in-law, Mary Ellen Laudner and Shirley Fullerton both of Rockford and many, many, many nieces and nephews.
Her husband Roger of 58 years, parents Joney and Ruby Laudner, Marc and Ida Fullerton, sisters Lois and her husband Charles Schulz, Lorraine and her husband Louie, brothers Dallas and Ronald Laudner, and brother-in-law Carl Uker preceded her in death.

Joan attended McKinley and Harding elementary schools, Monroe Junior High in Mason City, as well as Washington School in Chicago, Ill., where she received two school scholarships and studied under direction of her master artist, Otis Osbourne, at the Art Institute of Chicago. A delightful opportunity for her! Her first job at 14 was a checkout clerk at a local grocery store earning $.25 an hour, then working at a drugstore soda fountain for $.35 an hour. She then progressed to factory work earning $.50 an hour at age 16 for G & G Wood Products, painting and stenciling Chicago Fire Department barricades, constructing chair frames, children's chairs and toy boxes along with tending to the office business while her employer was out. Moving on to Mason City, she was a babysitter, did car-hopping at Hasse's Drive In, and Zanios Produce.

While working as a checkout clerk at her uncle John Eberhardt's grocery store at age 17, she entered into marriage with Marvin R. Davis Perkins on April 22, 1956, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. One son, William Ray Perkins, was born to this union on May 9, 1957, in Albany, Georgia, at Albrook Air Force Base.

She returned to Chicago with her son William shortly after to be with her parents where she waitressed the midnight shift at The White Cottage Caf directly across the street. Also, she worked part time at her father's cousin, Jake Jackson's, hotel restaurant where she learned to be a short order cook. She joined in marriage with Curtis Burtness on March 31, 1959, in Austin, Minn., when her son William was 2 years old. They were blessed with their first child, a son, Randall Curtis, who was born April 10, 1961, in Panama City, Panama Canal Zone. They had three more children born before term then God blessed her with two beautiful daughters born 10 months 18 days apart at Fort Benjamin Harrison Military Base in Indianapolis, Indiana. They spent 13 months in Mason City while her husband, Curtis, was stationed in Korea from 1967-1969. Their next move was to Fort Bliss, El Paso, Texas, then Mason City, when he shipped out to Germany. They transferred to St. James, Minn., for his last duty station, retiring after 22 years, with the U.S. Army and then moved to Northwood, in 1972, Mason City in 1975, and at last settled down in Manly, in 1983, and then back to Mason City in September, 2008.

Between her many travels, her jobs were babysitter, a "ding dong" Avon lady, Tupperware lady, bartender/manager, cook, deli manager, salesclerk in numerous departments, and cosmetologist at The House of James, Indianapolis, Ind.

After her children were grown, she became a certified member with the Newspaper Institute of America in New York City in 1987. She completed high school and graduated at North Iowa Area Community College in Mason City in 1988, followed by computer and genealogy courses. She was a poet and member of the National Poetry Association, North Iowa Genealogical Society and a life-time member of the VFW Post 1133. Her hobbies were writing poetry, planning surprise parties, cooking, baking, decorating cakes, painting, sewing, crocheting, ceramics, interior design, bingo, fishing, camping, surfing the Internet and most of all loving her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Through the years, she continued to teach herself the art of cake decorating and supplying cakes to family, friends and friends of friends.

At the age of 63, she was accepted by Wilton Industries and became a Wilton Method Cake Decorating Instructor. A special thank-you to her beautiful daughter, Marcie Porterfield, for her encouragement to teach the art of cake decorating and a special thank-you to her beautiful daughter, Margie Bartholomew who taught her how to power shop! What fun they are! A special thank you to her dear dear cousin, Betty Lou Harris, for always being there for her all her life.

The hardest part of Joan's journey is to leave behind her greatest treasures, her family, her life, her world, her love.

She is survived by her husband, Curtis G. Burtness of 49 years, her daughter, Margie Bartholomew and special friend, Mike Arispe, and his children, Jeremy and Alicia Arispe, Mason City, her daughter, Marcie Porterfield and husband Brad, Manly, her son William Perkins and his wife Tracey and her children, Arkansas; grandchildren, Marcus Sater, Dionne Sater, Christina Perkins, Billie Mae Perkins, Denver, Colo., Christopher Thompson, Cory Doland, Manly, Alicia Bartholomew and Timothy Bartholomew, Mason City, Alyssa Porterfield and Zachary Porterfield; her great-grandchildren, Cheridan, Lakota, Saphira, Melanie, Thomas, Nikki, Joshua, Emmalea Sater, Paige Guliano, Denver, Colo., and Jaiden Thompson, Plymouth, her sister, Jeanette "Jenny" Klunder, Mason City, and special friend, Wayne Smith, Leland, her special nephews, Dean and Rick Klunder, Mason City, her beautiful nieces, Julie and daughter's Whitney, and Cheyanne Sheehan, Osage, Teresa and husband, Ron Sargent, and their daughter, Chelsey, and twin boys, Nickolas and Jacob Sargent, Clear Lake; Aunt Velma Ficken and family, Theidosia, Mo., Aunt Dorothy Michales, and family, Ojai, Calif., along with many cousins and friends. Family and friends knew her skills as a seamstress, quilter and crocheter; many have received her work as gifts from her heart. Ellen enjoyed being outside tending to her yard and flowers. But the most joy in her life came from her family, especially caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren!

Her family includes her children, Gary Rhodes and his wife, Gail of Clive, and Donna Lawler and her husband, Junior, of Eldora; grandchildren, Scott Rhodes (Susan) of Urbandale, Kristin Wilcox (Dan) of Urbandale, Staci Kadolph (Kurt) of Ankeny, Tiffany Christensen (Konrad) of Ankeny, and Kelsey Marske (Andy) of Urbandale; great-grandchildren, Ellen, Anna, Colin, Peyton, Kaden, Eli, and Abby; and one sister, Treva Rothenberger of California.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one sister, Evelyn Smith; and four brothers, Frederick, Paul, Donald, and John Beard.

Vala, Teddi Lundgren

MARBLE ROCK - Teddi Lundgren Vala, of 702 Bradford St., Marble Rock, died Sunday (Nov. 16, 2008) at her home in Marble Rock.

There are no services being planned and cremation has taken place.

Theodora Jean Lundgren was born to Carl and Else Lundgren Sept. 23, 1943, in Elizabeth, Union County, N.J. She began her career as a dancer (the youngest) on Broadway and performed in "West Side Story," "Destry Rides Again," "Red Head" and others before graduating from Abraham Clark High School (Roselle, N.J.) in 1961.

She lived and worked in New Jersey as an executive secretary for Wilcolator and then The Money Store until 1971, when she suffered injuries from a traffic accident in Florida while visiting her parents.

She remained in Florida and after a long recuperation continued as an executive secretary and became involved with community theater in the area, where she met her husband, Michael (from Rockford, Iowa). They were married July 1, 1977, in Sarasota, Fla., and that fall moved to Hawaii, where she continued her executive secretarial skills with the NAPA distribution center while her husband worked for Hawaiian Printing, a division of Vanier Graphics.

The couple moved to San Antonio, Texas, in 1982, accepting a transfer when Vanier Graphics opened a new plant. While in Hawaii the couple developed a wood crafting business (exotic hardwood boxes) and in Texas Teddi opened a gift shop, Rare Discovery, selling her husband's woodcrafts, supplemented with appropriate and unique hand crafted art.

Within the year Michael resigned from Vanier and the couple went full time in the gift and craft business, traveling to art shows, producing and selling a succession of crafts.

Around 1986 Teddi developed her own craft - exquisite and unique hairpieces, earrings and broaches - made from natural feathers from wild and exotic birds. Her work was featured in the November 1990 issue "Sunshine Artist," a national publication. She also became the Texas (and later Iowa) reporter for that magazine. Many artists and craftsmen still thank her for her vital information and the wit and charm in her column.

The couple moved to Marble Rock in 1988, continuing in their travels coast to coast, transitioning from feather art to hardwood kaleidoscopes. Teddi not only helped with the production of the scopes, but also expertly handled the enormous task of almost daily applying and booking shows, the bookkeeping and actual sales at the shows. During this time the couple participated in some of the finest shows in at least 33 states.

In 1996, in an effort to reduce the degree and distance of travel, Teddi developed a unique and highly successful soy candle, using natural fragrance and essential oils. Some may remember her kiosk during the Christmas seasons at Southbridge Mall in Mason City, and the feature article in the Globe Gazette on Dec. 18, 1999.

Failing health precluded continuing with the candle production, traveling and selling at shows after 2002 and instead some may remember Teddi at local auctions, enthusiastically bidding on almost anything, and particularly collectible glassware. She ran a lively and successful business on Ebay. Michael continued producing kaleidoscopes on a limited basis and also repaired and restored antique and collectible cuckoo clocks. When no longer able to get to the auctions, she continued the Ebay business with scopes and clocks.

By 2006, her medical needs made scope and clock production more and more difficult. Instead of giving up, she discovered a whole new area in which to excel. She became a home agent for a California flower company, taking phone sales and customer service over the internet. The computer was her window to the world. In spite of the increasing, enormous physical restrictions in later life she remained as active, enthusiastic and gregarious as the Broadway show dancer. She leaves literally hundreds of dear friends nationwide -indeed worldwide.

She was preceded in death by her father in August 1982 and 20 years almost to the day by her mother in 2002.

She is survived by three cousins, Gail, Ellen and Joan; and her husband, Michael; and feathered son, Vinnie.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Reid's Funeral Chapel, 423 Bradford St., Marble Rock, 888-823-REID.

Baker, Velma P. "Babe"

MASON CITY - Velma "Babe" P. Baker, 92, of 741 S. Illinois Ave. died Thursday (Nov. 13, 2008) at the Good Shepherd Care Center.

A memorial service and celebration of Babe's life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., Mason City.

Velma "Babe" Baker, born on April 25, 1916, in Dayton, Iowa, was the third of four children born to Robert M. and Elizabeth A. (Desch) Umsted.

She grew up and graduated from Dayton High School in 1934. While a student she was a gifted athlete, and developed a love of sports that remained with her throughout her entire life.

During her lifetime Babe held many jobs. She was an accomplished sewer, a great cook and a fierce competitor at any card game, especially cribbage. Many a grandchild challenged her to a game only to regret it after she skunked them. In their earlier years, Babe and Red spent many happy hours fishing and going to dances.

She especially loved baseball, and cheered for the New York Yankees all of her life, rarely missing their games on television. She was also a devoted fan of the Hawkeyes basketball team, and also followed them via televised games.

She dearly loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and was always happy to hear from them and to know how their lives were going.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen J. Bird and husband, Jim, of Mason City; son, Mick Baker and wife, Sally, of Mason City; daughter-in-law, Cathie Baker of New Brighton, Minn. Also surviving her are her grandchildren, R. Diane Shanafelt of Sioux City, Donna Stolze of Sioux City, Jennifer Koehler of Silver Bay, Minn., Bradley Baker of Minneapolis, Minn., Susan Kral of Mason City, Andrew Baker of Eden Prairie, Minn., Chris Baker of Oxford, Iowa; and one sister, Dorothy Schill of Weslaco Texas. She is also survived by many great-grandchildren and several great-great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews and cousins including one very special cousin, MaryLou Strandberg (affectionately referred to as "sister of my heart") from Dayton, Iowa. Others who will miss Babe are her special "family" and friends at Pilgrim Place.

She was preceded in death by her brother Bobby in childhood; her parents; her husband, Cecil R. "Red" Baker; her son, Donald R. Baker; a grandson, Donald Robert Baker Jr. in infancy; a great-granddaughter, Leah Diane Shanafelt in infancy; and her sister,Irene King.

Babe's last wish was to die in comfort and peace. With many family members beside her, and with the loving and skilled care of the staff at Good Shepherd and the Hospice care team, this gift was granted. With hearts full of gratitude, the family wishes to extend its sincere thanks to all these people, and pray God's continued blessings upon each and every one of you.
