Abel, Lyle Richard "Dick"  
 
STACYVILLE - Lyle Richard "Dick" Abel, 63, of Stacyville died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2008) at his home in Stacyville.

He was born Oct. 31, 1945, at Waterloo, the son of Marvin and Ruth (Thorson) Abel. Dick graduated from Allerton High School in May 1963. Dick earned an Associates of Arts Degree from Indian Hills Community College in May 1965, and graduated with honors from Culver-Stockton College with a B.A. in Business Administration in May 1967.

He joined the U.S. Army in June 1967 and served in Vietnam from January 1968 through March 1969. Dick worked as a district manager for the Hot Point Corp. in Colorado from 1970 to 1975. In 1975, Dick moved to Madill, Okla., where he worked for the Oklahoma Steel and Wire Co. as a business consultant and as the human resources director until ill health forced his retirement in 2000. Dick enjoyed fishing and gardening.

According to his wishes, his body was cremated. Memorial services will be held in Oklahoma at a later date.

Dick is survived by a brother, Larry (Elaine) Abel of Riceville; friend, James Brown of Stacyville; two nephews, Todd (Ris�) Abel of Lindstrom, Minn.; Brian (LeAndrea) Abel of Marshalltown; three great-nephews: Acea Spiegeler of Riceville, Joshua Abel of Burlington, Mass., and David Abel-Clapp of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his father, Marvin Abel; his mother, Ruth Davis; one niece, Constance Abel-Spiegeler; maternal and paternal grandparents, Lawrance and Blanche Thorson, and Boyd and Grace Abel.

OSAGE - Larry E. Ellingson, 71, of Strasburg, N.D., and formerly of Osage, died Monday (Nov. 3, 2008) in the Linton Hospital, Linton, N.D.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery, rural Osage, with military honors at the grave by the Osage American Legion Post 278.

Visitation will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home.

LATIMER - Elfrieda E. Pralle, 83, of Latimer died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2008) at the Hampton Health Care Center in Hampton.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Latimer, with Pastor Marvin Lorenz officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at the St Paul Lutheran Church in Latimer, and will continue one hour prior to services on Saturday.

FERTILE - Willys E. Spainhower, 87, of 705 W. Main St., Fertile, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2008) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating.

Visitation will be a half hour before the service.

Family suggests memorials to the Willys E. Spainhower Memorial Fund.

Willys was born May 10, 1921, in Chapin, the son of Theodore and Ruby Iowa (Crawford) Spainhower. He graduated from Hampton High School in 1938.

He worked for Douglas Air Craft, Lakewood, Calif., as a designer for more than 30 years. He married Barbara Moss. After he retired they moved to Kingman, Ariz.

In 2003 he moved to Fertile, Iowa, to live. He loved the outdoors, mountains, hunting and panning for gold.

He is survived by his brother, LaVere Spainhower of Walcott, Iowa; sister, Alice Ann MacMillan of Willits, Calif.; two stepchildren: Deborah Thomas and Diane Hommes; five nephews: Clifford Sorensen, Conrad Spainhower, Martin Spainhower, Theodore Spainhower and Craig Spainhower; four nieces: Judy Gergen, Patricia Sorensen, Rosalee Sorensen and Bonnie Church; and a special friend, Shirley Peterson of Clear Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, twin brother Julius E. Spainhower; wife Barbara; niece Janie Spainhower; and stepson Mick Moss.

IOWA FALLS - Julius "Juice" Winter, 55, of Iowa Falls died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2008) at the Hennepen County Medical Center, Minneapolis, Minn., following an automobile accident in Cerro Gordo County, Iowa.

Memorial services for "Juice" Winter will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at the Immanuel Memorial United Church of Christ, Alden. Inurnment will be at the Buckeye Cemetery.

CHARLES CITY - Anna M. Knapp, 88, of Desert Hot Springs, Calif., formerly of Charles City, died Monday afternoon (Nov. 3, 2008) at Eisenhower Memorial Hospital in Rancho Mirage, Calif.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008 at the Trinity Methodist Church in Charles City, with Pastor Dennis Johnson and Pastor Gary Van Wert officiating. Jeannine Milus will be the organist.

Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery at Nashua.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hugeback & Chenoweth Funeral Home in Nashua, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Anna Mildred Knapp was born March 20, 1920, in Minnesota, the daughter of Charles and Olga (Will) Conner.

She was united in marriage to Troy L. Knapp in Charles City, on Jan. 12, 1948. To this union a son, Lonnie, and a daughter, Shirley were born.

She worked with Troy on the family farm north of Nashua until retiring in 1997.

Anna was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Charles City.

Anna is survived by her son, Lonnie (Nancy) Knapp, of Desert Hot Springs, Calif.; her daughter, Shirley (Joel) Rasmussen, of Clear Lake; and four grandchildren, Jamie and Dusty Knapp and Adam and Alicia Rasmussen.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Troy, on Dec. 30, 2002; a grandson, Eric Knapp and her parents, Charles and Olga.

CLEAR LAKE - Ruth M. Seidel, 100 1/2, of 1400 Seventh Ave. N. Clear Lake, died Thursday (Nov. 6, 2008) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, 2008, at the Christian Church 302 Hwy. 18 W., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Scott Wilson officiating. Interment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. Clear Lake, and then one hour before the service on Monday at the church.

Family suggests memorials to Clear Lake Christian Church or Hospice of North Iowa.

Ruth was born Dec. 10, 1907, in Lincoln Twp., rural Clear Lake, the daughter of LeRoy and Rose (Hall) French. She attended Clear Lake School.

She married Ralph Wesley Tarr in 1926; they lived in Clear Lake where they raised their nine children. She worked at Curley's Caf� and the Surf Ballroom. While her children were growing up, she was a cub scout leader. Her husband Ralph died in an automobile accident.

On Sept. 20, 1958, she married Clarence Seidel and they farmed in the McIntire area. They retired from the farm in 1988 and moved to Garner, Iowa. Following her husbands death in 1991 she moved to Clear Lake to live.

Her greatest joy in life was being with her family.

The family would like to express their gratitude for the wonderful care given to her by Oakwood Care Center staff and the Hospice of North Iowa staff.

She is survived by six sons, Donald Tarr, of Wautoma, Wis., Allan Tarr, of Clear Lake, Marvin Tarr, of Fort Mitchell, Ala., William (Pat) Tarr, of Clear Lake, Richard (Jane) Tarr, of Champaign Ill., and Keith (Sharon) Tarr, Clear Lake; 28 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; brother, LeRoy (Lorraine) French, of Clear Lake; sister, Patricia Edward, of Hot Springs, Ark.; and sons-in-law, Leo Formanek, of Clear Lake, and Norman Spooner, of Nora Springs.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, two daughters, Cindy Lou Spooner and Mary Pat Formanek; son, Robert Tarr and his wife Polly; daughters-in-law, Pam Tarr, Betty J. Tarr, Betty R. Tarr and Norma Jean Tarr; brother-in-law, Lyle Edward; and three sisters, Violet Wreghitt, Ethel Lyn Patterson and Reba Homer.

Squier, Jo Ann  
 
RICEVILLE - Jo Ann Squier, 70, of rural Riceville, died Wednesday (Nov. 5, 2008) at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.

Jo Ann was born Jan. 31, 1938, at Osage, the daughter of Walter W. and Marcella E. (Green) Sheldon. She graduated from Osage High School in 1955.

Jo Ann married Maurice "Skip" Counsell on June 3, 1956, in Osage. Maurice passed away Feb. 12, 1974. She married Gene Squier on March 5, 1977, in Osage.

Jo Ann worked most recently as the Riceville Deputy City Clerk. She previously worked as a farm wife, bookkeeper, dental assistant, homemaker health aide, and self-employed crafter, in addition to her most important duties as that of mom and grandmother.

Jo Ann was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osage since 1952 where she was a member of various church organizations. She served as the Sunday service facilitator at the Mitchell County Care Facility for a number of years.

Jo Ann was instrumental with the restoration and maintenance of Beaver Creek (Brownville) Cemetery since 1978. She was a local organizer of the Riceville Blood Drive for 30 years, and was on the American Red Cross District Board for several years. Jo Ann was a 4-H leader. She was also a volunteer for the Easter Seals Society, and was a former local Farm Bureau president. Jo Ann enjoyed baking, crocheting, knitting, gardening, sewing, and loved birds.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage, with the Rev. Anna Blaedel officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Jo Ann is survived by her husband, Gene Squier, of Riceville; children, Merry (Jim) Spiers of Grant City, Mo., Donald (Shelly) Counsell of Orchard, Denise Counsell of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Deanna Counsell and Mark Muth of Delano, Minn., Heather (Pete) Rysavy of St. Ansgar; three brothers, Gary (Vieta) Sheldon, of Phillipsburg, Mo., Walter (Sharon) Sheldon, of Osage, Allyn (Darlene) Sheldon, of Osage; a sister, Sharon (Howard) Shaw, of Osage; grandchildren, Derek and Cole Counsell, Merrideth Spiers, and Logan Rysavy; mother-in-law, Norma Squier of Stacyville; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Maurice D. Counsell; Loren and Grace Bucknell, who helped raise her; step-mother, Alzina Sheldon, and father-in-law, Paul Squier.

Swartz, Scott Alan  
 
MASON CITY - Scott Alan Swartz, of Clear Lake, died Thursday morning (Nov. 6, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City following a courageous battle with cancer. He was 44 years, six days of age.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake. Following the service there will be a lunch at the Best Western Holiday Lodge, Highway 18 East, Clear Lake.

Scott was born Halloween day, Oct. 31, 1964, at International Falls, Minn. He graduated from Mariner High School in White Bear Lake, Minn., and Alexandria Technical College, Alexandria, Minn.

He is survived by his widow, Tami (Fickle) Swartz, whom he married May 13, 1995, at White Bear Lake; two sons, Timothy and Thomas, and one daughter, Tinysha.

Also his parents, Samuel and Charlotte Swartz, of Clear Lake; his mother in-law, Trudy Fickle of Cambridge, Minn.; two brothers, Samuel (Dawn) Swartz, of Spring Lake Park, Minn., and William Swartz, of Lake Elmo, Minn. Also four sisters, Debra (Steven) Vagstad, of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Patricia (Donald) Sames, of Hugo, Minn., Jacqueline (Carl) Folsom, of Culver City, Minn., and Vickie Swartz, of Alexandria, Minn. Also many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by both sets of grandparents, an uncle, an aunt, and two nieces.

Scott enjoyed being a father and uncle. His greatest joy was his family. He wanted to thank everyone who touched his life.

Scott served in the Army in Georgia and Oklahoma. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed playing hockey as a youth.

CLEAR LAKE - Lorrine Willger Thomes, 86, of 401 W. 10th Ave. N., Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Nov. 4, 2008) at the Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Clear Lake, with the Rev. John Tilp officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. Clear Lake, with a Scriptural wake service at 3 p.m. Visitation will also be one hour before the service on Monday at the church.

Family suggests memorials to Lorrine Thomes Memorial Fund.

Lorrine was born March 30, 1922, in Cashton, Wis., the daughter of Peter and Mabel (Sletten) Willger. She graduated from Gilman High School in Gilman, Wis.

Lorrine married Ben Thomes June 14, 1941, in LaCrosse, Wis. She attended Milwaukee Area Technical College in Cudahy.

She worked at the Cudahy Health Department for over 29 years and later worked at the Milwaukee Airport in the private airplanes parts department .

She was past president of the Kelly Senior Center Council, secretary of Kelly Center Travel Club, past president of the Christian Mothers and Cudahy Home Makers, P.T.A., Den Mother Cub Scouts, and Clear Lake Friendly Garden Club. She enjoyed making quilts at St. Patrick's and Zion Lutheran Church.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake.

Lorrine is survived by three children, Norb Thomes and his wife, Marie, of Clear Lake, Ceci Thomes, of Cerrillos, N.M., and Gine Thomes-Cotter, of Phoenix, Ariz.; seven grandchildren, Colleen Cotter and her husband, David, of San Diego, Calif., Jon Dunnum and his wife, Suzy, of Albuquerque, N.M., Kathy Rewolinski, of Gilbert Ariz., Colin Cotter and his wife, Melanie, of Frisco, Texas, Jeremy Dunnum and his wife, Jacqueline, of Albuquerque, N.M., Thomas Rewolinski, and his wife, Liz, of Gilbert, Ariz., and Andy Thomes, of Clear Lake; three great-grandchildren, Somiya Dunnum, Kira Dunnum and Cleo Cotter; one brother, Norbert Willger and his wife, Rose, of Racine, Wis.; and one sister, Esther Abramovicz, of Thorp, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, daughter, Phyllis Rewolinski; a brother, Glenn Willger; and one sister, Angeline Nichols.

MASON CITY - Dick Coe 80, of 2 Circle Terrace, died Thursday (Nov. 6, 2008) at the Manly Nursing and Rehab Center.
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10, at Bethel United Methodist Church, 503 E. South St., Manly, with Pastor Don Preston, officiating. Burial will be in the Bohemian Cemetery, Plymouth.
Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 East Spring St., Manly; and continue one hour prior to the service at the church.

Dick Coe was born June 20, 1928, in Mason City, the son of Wayne and Ruth Ann (Wharam) Coe. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1946. Dick and his family farmed west of Manly. He was united in marriage to Margaret Jacks on April 29, 1950, in Waterloo; to this union three sons were born.
In 1957, the family moved to a farm north of Plymouth. Dick farmed and worked at the sugar beet plant and was a mechanic for Armour; retiring in 1983. Dick owned and operated a bulldozer doing custom work.
Dick and Margaret enjoyed time in the Peace Corps, spending time in Siera Leone, West Africa, from 1975 to 1977. He liked traveling, both in the United States and abroad, wintering in the Rio Grand Valley, Texas. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, working in his shop and his garden.
Dick was a member of US Farmers Association and he attended Bethel United Methodist Church, Manly.
Dick is survived by his wife, Margaret Coe, of Mason City; sons, James (Laurie) Coe of Libertyville, Iowa, Dale (Cheryl) Coe of Fargo, N.D.; grandchildren, Amber Lynn Coe of Libertyville, Mike Humphrey of Fargo, N.D., Scott Humphrey of Milnor, N.D., Angie Taylor of Fargo, N.D.; great-grandchildren, Michael Jr., Brittney, Myranda, Theron, Hailey Jo, Jaiden and Tihlor; brothers, James L. Coe of Parkers Prairie, Minn., and Duane D. Coe of Nora Springs; sisters, Elda Thielen of Rockford and Ruth Ann Scholl of Mason City; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Dick is preceded in death by his parents, son, Robert "Scott" Coe; brothers, Keith and Ellis Coe.

CLEAR LAKE - LeRoy "Red" Jackson Sr., 85, 215 S. Third St. Apt. 1., Clear Lake, died Thursday (Nov. 6, 2008). He passed away at home surrounded by his children under hospice care.
A visitation with family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Saturday, Nov. 8, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. Clear Lake.
According to his wishes, his body has been cremated.
Memorials may be given to the LeRoy Jackson Memorial Fund.
LeRoy (Red) was born March 31, 1923, in Kanawha, the son of Lewis and Selma (Jacobson) Jackson. Following graduation from Kanawha High School, he entered the Navy in 1942 during World War II. He married Marie Kelly in 1945 in New Jersey.
After an honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to work in Kanawha. Red later formed Jackson Brothers Construction Co. They moved to California in 1978 to work construction with his oldest son.
Red returned to Iowa and retired in Clear Lake in 1989. He joined the Clear Lake VFW. He enjoyed his daily huckly buck card game at Elly's, Thursday night poker with his friends and Wednesday night pool league where he quickly became known for making the 8-ball on the break 15 times.
Red had a great ability for making friends where ever he was. He really enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and always gave them a two-dollar bill.
Red is survived by Marie Jackson of Clear Lake; six children, Sandy Jackson of Pearblossom, Calif., Dan Jackson and his wife, Vicki, of Clear Lake, Kelly Jackson and his wife, Nelda, of Garner, Matt Jackson of Little Rock, Calif., Joseph Jackson and his wife, Kay, of New Baden, Ill., and Maureen Kozisek and her husband, Kevin, of Garner; sisters, Marian Kraft of Kanawha, Luetta Stoeckel of Barnegat, N.J., Vivian Waage of Goodell; brothers, Lewis Jackson Jr. and his wife, Ethelene, of Kanawha, Paul Jackson and his wife, Kaye, of Kanawha; and sister-in-law, Fern Jackson of Richland Center, Wis.; 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Red was preceded in death by parents, brothers, Stanley and Alvin Jackson; brothers-in-law, Fritz Waage, Kenneth Kraft and Jack Stoeckel; son, Charles Jackson; and grandson, Travis Jackson.

Kahlstorf, Donald Henry  
 
Donald Henry Kahlstorf passed away Saturday (Nov. 1, 2008) in Sun City, Ariz., in the arms of his savior Jesus Christ.
He was born March 20, 1930, in Garner, and graduated from Britt High School. He enlisted in the Air Force in 1947 and served 23 years before being discharged as a master sergeant. He served in France, the Panama Canal Zone, Formosa and Vietnam and earned a Bronze Star medal. He followed his military career working in civilian airlines for 25 years, including helping establish America West Airlines in 1981 as reliability analyst, and in retirement worked at Tip Top Nursery.
Don was a member of Grace Bible Church in Sun City and served as an usher.
He is survived by his wife, Elda; and children, Donald Eugene Kahlstorf (Becky), David Duane Kahlstorf (Tamera), James Gregory Kahlstorf, Carolyn Buquet (Richard) and Lantz Trantham (Yvette). He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren; older siblings, Edna Fisher, Harold Kahlstorf, Millie Sonerholm and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Frieda Kahlstorf; his first wife, Pauline; and siblings, Robert Kahlstorf, Gertrude Mortenson, Donna Kahlstorf and Laura Baade.
A memorial service was held at Grace Bible Church, Sun City, Ariz., at 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 7.

MASON CITY - Alma Campbell, 97, of 1011 N. Tyler Ave., Mason City, died Thursday (Nov. 6, 2008) at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.

Alma was born on April 10, 1911, in Buffalo Center, a daughter of Samuel Peter and Bertha (Engadal) Sampson.
Alma was united in marriage to Melvin Campbell in Mason City on Dec. 24, 1928. The couple made their home in Mason City in 1929, where Alma has lived ever since. Besides being a homemaker and loving mother, Alma was a proud gardener and an excellent cook, her specialty being pies. Her highest priority was her family. She loved entertaining on Sundays and welcomed everyone into her home. She always maintained her strong Christian values. She attended the First Assembly of God church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin, in 1994; brothers, Peter and Sigwald Sampson; sister, Betty Behr; brothers-in-law, Elmer Behr and Leighton Field; and sister-in-law, Virginia Sampson.

MASON CITY - Gladys Mae Detmering died Saturday (Nov. 8, 2008) at Heritage Care Center in Mason City, surrounded by her loving family. She was 87.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at the United Methodist Church in Wesley with the Rev. Denise Group officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Wesley.
Gladys Mae Detmering was born Feb. 11, 1921, at LuVerne, Iowa, the daughter of Orville and Jesse (Olinger) Alexander. She graduated from LuVerne High School in 1939. Gladys worked for a short time in DeKalb, Ill., before being united in marriage to George Detmering on June 18, 1942, in Bethany, Mo.
Gladys and George farmed at LuVerne until 1952. They moved to a farm northwest of Wesley where they farmed until 1980, at which time they built a home and moved into Wesley. She worked at the Corwith-Wesley Community Schools as a secretary for 12 years.
She was an active member of the Methodist Church in Wesley, where she was organist, as well as a Sunday school teacher and was active in many community activities. Gladys prided herself in her homemade chocolate cake and her raisin cream pie!
George and Gladys moved to Mason City in 2000, to be closer to their family. George passed away on July 11, 2002, and Gladys continued living in their condo in Mason City with her dog, Buffy, with the 24-hour, seven days a week care of her daughters and granddaughters. In September 2005, she moved to the Heritage Care Center Alzheimer's Unit in Mason City.
Gladys is survived by her three daughters, Linda Kay and Ronald Rippentrop, Vicki Lee and Jerry Als, and Kathy Jean and Daniel Tresemer, all of Mason City; her grandchildren, Shelley Huebner, Heidi and Greg Rippentrop, Casey and Kelly Als, Brad Tresemer and Kim Ryan. She also has 14 great-grandchildren, Chris and Jamie Huebner, Nick and Zack Solum, Caleb and Matt Rippentrop, Gavin Als, Jordan, Brock and C.J. Tresemer, Ali, Amanda, Tracey and Chris Ryan. Also surviving is her sister, Irma and Glenn Wigans of Humboldt; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; sisters, Evelyn and Marvel; brothers, Everett and Vernon.

OSAGE - Richard L. "Dick" Gast, age 84, of Osage died Friday (Nov. 7, 2008) at Faith Lutheran Home in Osage.

Dick was born Jan. 20, 1924, near Nora Springs, the son of Clifford and Alma (Paulson) Gast. Dick attended schools in Osage. In 1940, Dick was a state high school wrestling champion, as was his brother, George. They were the first brothers to win state titles in Iowa in the same year. He graduated from Osage High School in 1941.
Dick was united in marriage to Lyla Hackbart on July 28, 1944, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Osage. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946. Dick farmed, worked at the Osage Feed and Seed, and for the Iowa Department of Agriculture as an ag products inspector. Dick was a member of Rock Creek Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Osage VFW Post 7920 and a member of the Osage American Legion Post 278. Dick enjoyed attending sporting events and playing cribbage, in which he once had a perfect hand. Dick loved, most of all, spending time with his family.
Dick is survived by his wife, Lyla Gast of Osage; three sons, Ron (Jane) Gast of Monticello and their children, Tracy and Trevor, Bruce (Cheryl) Gast of Osage and their children, Ben and Matt, Del (Karen) Gast of Osage, and their children, Carly and Jessie; 8 great-grandchildren; one brother, Bill (Colleen) Gast of Nora Springs; one sister, Marlys (Clarence) Wegman of Inver Grove Heights, Minn.; several nieces and nephews.

Bob Gilbert was born July 15, 1917, the oldest child of David and Ollie (Sloter) Gilbert. After completing the eighth grade he began his life-long dedication to farming.
On July 29, 1941, Bob was married to Bernice Fjone of Lake Mills. Later in 1941, Bob was called to serve his country and was inducted into the Army. He was assigned to the 9th Armored Division engineers where he became a heavy equipment operator. During World War II he saw action in the European Theater, from landing at Omaha Beach on D-Day to the victory in Europe in 1945. He was particularly proud of his service at Bastogne, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge, and the action he and his unit took to preserve the critical bridge over the Rhine River at Remagen, Germany.
Bob's son, Gary, was born in 1944 while Bob was in Europe. After the war, Bob returned to Iowa and farming near Lake Mills. His son, Danny, was born in 1946. The family lived on their farm until Bob and Bernice retired and moved to their home on South Winnebago Street.
Bob and Bernice were married 51 years until Bernice died in 1997. They spent many evenings greeting passers-by on the "Rice Lake Road" from their porch at 706 Winnebago.
He is survived by two sons: Gary Gilbert and his wife, Jayne, of Houston, Texas, Danny Gilbert and his wife, Mary, of Edmond, Okla.; three grandchildren, Deanna Gilbert Cone of Houston, Nic Gilbert and Mandy Gilbert of Oklahoma City; and two great-grandchildren, Brooke and Parker Cone of Houston; a brother, Albert Gilbert of Klemme; and a sister, Lucille Proctor of Cresco; and several nieces and nephews.
Bob is preceded in death by his parents, David and Ollie Gilbert, of Thornton; his wife, Bernice; his sister, Bernice Asbe of Kanawha; and brother, Harry Gilbert of Ottumwa.

Claude was born June 29, 1919, in Greene, the son of John C. and Margaret (Hammel) Merfeld. He farmed for a short while, before joining the Army.
Claude married Hilda (Kruse) on Sept. 5, 1942, at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Claude worked for Franklin County as a heavy equipment operator after being honorably discharged from the Army.
In 1954, Claude and his family moved to Mason City, and he worked for 29 years at the former Builders Supply Co. in Mason City as a yard foreman and truck driver.
Claude enjoyed fishing, woodworking and traveling. He also loved to go fishing at the many lakes in Minnesota and do anything outdoors. He was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church and served on the church council at one time.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Werstein, Mason City; five grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; his brothers, Lyle (Betty) Merfeld, Mason City, Kenneth (Sharon) Merfeld, Emmetsburg, his sister, Arlene (Gordon) Kammrad, Mason City, and his sisters-in law, Alma Karsjens, Mason City, and Ester Day, Clear Lake.
Claude was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Hilda, in 2005; his daughter, Kathryn; and his "son in law" Frank Kiroff.

DAVENPORT - Bonnie L. Lee, 64, of, Davenport died Saturday (Nov. 8, 2008) at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice- Genesis VNA in Bettendorf.

Funeral services to celebrate Bonnie's life will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, 2008, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly Road at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Burial will be in Oakdale Memorial Gardens.

Bonnie was born in 1944 in Garner, a daughter of John and Irma Haaf.

On Aug. 18, 1962, she was united in marriage to Richard C. Lee. Mr. Lee preceded her in death on Sept. 23, 1977.

Bonnie enjoyed doing arts and crafts, and, above all, enjoyed spending time with her family.

Survivors include her four kids, Ronald D. (Diane) Lee, Long Grove, Iowa, and their children, Adam and Rachel; Steven R. (Julie) Lee, Summerville, S.C.; Rebecca (Brian) Downs of Summerville, S.C. and their children, Jaime and Kyle; and Jana (Keith) Foran of Davenport, and their children, Keshia and Travis; a great-granddaughter, Selena Foran; four siblings including twins, Philip (Sonny) Haaf of Cedar Rapids, and Phyllis Kern of Clear Lake; Wanda Worley of Cedar Rapids and Mark Haaf of Clear Lake; several nieces and nephews; and her special friend, her cat, Roscoe.

In addition to her husband, Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Juanita Straaka.

Doris A. Olson was born in Thompson, Iowa, on March 24, 1919, the daughter of Percy and Anna (Nolton) Hagenson. She was baptized and confirmed in Thompson and graduated from high school there.

On April 7, 1946, she was united in marriage to Elmer Olson in Thompson. The couple lived in rural Leland for several years and in 1951 began farming east of Forest City. In 1994 they moved to town. For many years, Doris worked as Insurance Secretary for Winnebago Industries.

Doris was a member of Forest Evangelical Lutheran Church and active in Ladies Aid. She enjoyed china painting, crocheting, doing cross-word puzzles and a good game of "500".

Doris is survived by her son, David Olson, and his wife, Wendy, of Mason City, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Elmer, a brother, Marion Hagenson, and a sister, Addie Borg.
