CLEAR
LAKE - Idella Nicholas Dukes, 85, of Clear Lake, died
Friday (June 13, 2008) at the Good Shepherd Health
Center in Mason City.
A private memorial service is planned.
Memorials preferred to Hospice of North Iowa and World
Wildlife Fund.
Idella Mae Dukes was born on July 18, 1922, in Allison,
the daughter of William Hall and Viola (Folkers)
Nicholas. She married Harold Dukes in 1956.
Idella's passions included her children, her books,
traveling to Civil War sites, and cats.
Idella is survived by her children, Gary Dukes (friend,
Nancy Olson), Ken Dukes, and Lori Dukes; grandchildren,
Christopher Dukes and Brandon Dukes (wife, Sarah Anne);
great-grandson, Riley Joel Dukes; brother, W. L.
Nicholas (wife, Mary Lou) and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, sister, Bonnie
Schick and daughter-in-law Carla Brown-Dukes.

MASON
CITY - Marvin J. Rinnels, 78, formerly of 14 Quincy
Terrace in Mason City, and most currently of 4 Third St.
N.W., Apartment 542, in Mason City, died Friday
afternoon (June 13, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center North
Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday,
June 17, at the Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th
St. N.W. in Mason City, with the Rev. Steve Hansen
presiding. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery,
Mason City.
The family will greet relatives and friends today,
Monday, June 16, from 4 until 8 p.m. at Fullerton
Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City. Members
of the Loyal Order of the Moose will conduct a ritual
service in Marvin's honor at 7 p.m. The visitation will
continue on Tuesday at the church, one hour prior to the
service.
Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of
sympathy may direct them to the Marvin J. Rinnels
Memorial Fund.
Marvin Joe Rinnels, the second child of Ehme William and
Jennie (Eckhoff) Rinnels, was born on June 28, 1929, in
Parkersburg. He attended the Chapin Community Schools.
At a very young age, Marvin understood the value of a
solid work ethic. He was often the "father figure" in
the eyes of his 14 siblings.
In 1948, Marvin relocated to Mason City. He was employed
at the Northwestern Cement Company (Holcim), retiring in
1993 following many years of dedication to his position.
On June 9, 1956, Marvin was united in marriage to
LaVonne Joyce Gourley at the Wesley United Methodist
Church in Mason City. Marvin and LaVonne considered
themselves soul mates and were each other's best friend.
They became the proud parents of two daughters and two
sons.
Marvin and LaVonne treasured their time together. They
enjoyed dancing, especially to country music, waltzes
and the two-step, their Sunday morning breakfast trips,
grabbing ice-cream treats and enjoying them at East Park
and sharing day-to-day conversations and events.
Marvin was devoted to his faith. He was a former member
of the Wesley United Methodist Church, a current member
of Grace United Methodist Church and a member of the
Loyal Order of the Moose.
He is described as a very caring, "one of a kind man"
who was a true friend to all! Marvin was known for his
constant smile and his happy and positive disposition.
He always placed his family as his greatest priority,
enjoyed watching old Western movies, playing cards,
going fishing and collecting hats and caps. He loved the
color blue!
Marvin was a talented woodworker, well-recognized for
his lawn ornament creations, which grace many of the
lawns of his family and friends.
Marvin will be dearly missed by all who have shared in
his life.
He is survived by his wife, LaVonne Rinnels of Mason
City; his daughter, Deborah (John) Cowan of Lakeland,
Fla.; his son, David (Sue) Dickinson of Clear Lake; his
grandchildren, Melissa Dickinson, Matthew Holmes and
Christopher Holmes and his three great-grandsons,
Tristan, Colton and Noah. Marvin will also cherished by
his siblings, Darlene Benning of Plainfield; Simon
Rinnels of Wayland, Mich.; Alice Springer of Mason City;
twins, Jerry Rinnels of Mason City and Judy Kay Cassel
of Hastings, Mich.; twins, Larry Rinnels of Woodbury,
Minn. and Gary (Barb) Rinnels of Mason City; Don
(Connie) Rinnels of Cedar Falls and Jane Herman of
Charles City; his sister-in-law, Judy Rinnels of Clear
Lake; his brother-in-law, Floyd Benson of Cedar Falls
and numerous other relatives and friends.
Preceding Marvin in death are his infant daughter,
Kristi Rinnels; his son, Terry Rinnels; his parents,
Ehme and Jennie Rinnels; his two sisters, Henrietta
Benson and June Harmon and his three brothers, Harley,
Bob and John Rinnels.

S.W., died Saturday (June 14, 2008) at his home after a
short battle with lung cancer.

James Edward Balek was born on Sept. 20, 1924, in Mason
City, the son of Joseph and Jennie (Brown) Balek. James
was the ninth child of 11. James remembers home as being
918 S. Carolina and then 830 S. Jersey. James attended
and graduated from St. Joseph Catholic School.
Following graduation he entered the U.S. Army, and was
stationed in Europe during World War II.
James married Vivian Ruth Logeman on Sept. 30, 1949, at
St. Joseph's Catholic Church. They resided in Mason
City, where he worked for Pacific Gamble Robinson as
foreman until his retirement in 1987. Following his
"retirement" he went back to work part-time for the same
company and also learned to play farmer, to drive a
tractor and do field work for his son.
Jim, like his father, had several passions, one being
totally devoted to his family and another being an avid
fisherman.
Jim is survived by the love of his life, wife, Vivian
Balek, of Mason City; and his other passions, his kids:
Ron and wife Sheila Balek, of Manly, Deanna and husband,
Ed Harris, of Rockford, Fred Balek, of Mason City and
special friend, Donita Roben, of Rockwell, and Ted Balek,
of Mount Pleasant; grandkids, James Thomas and wife
Debbie Balek, Amy Marie Balek, Matthew James Balek and
Jessica Michelle Balek; great-grandkids, Jackson and
Joey Balek; special niece, Karen Fedderson, of Charles
City; brothers, Walter and wife, Cathryn Balek, of
Edina, Minn., and Bob Balek, of Mason City; and sister,
Betty Wellington, of Mesa, Ariz.; and many nieces,
nephews and cousins.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters,
Anna Hoselton, Vi Bernemann, Carrie Riley, Lillian
Wellington and Helen Buffington; and two brothers,
Joseph Balek and Leonard Balek.

CITY - Gale A. Brierly, 87, of Nora Springs, died Monday
(June 16, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit in Mason City.
Per his request, Gale will be cremated and no services
are being planned.
Gale was born on July 13, 1920, the son of Garrett and
Adda (Tibbetts) Brierly in Rudd, Iowa. He enlisted in
the United States Army in 1942.
In 1952, Gale married Betty Carpenter in New Hampton,
Iowa.
Gale loved to go hunting, especially coon hunting. He
also enjoyed fishing, camping, telling stories, talking
with his friends, and going for rides.
Gale is survived by his wife, Betty, of Nora Springs;
his children, Dennis (Pat) Brierly, of Crooks, S.D.,
Howard (Janice) Brierly, of Heber Springs, Ark., Barry
Brierly, of Santa Rosa, Calif., Marilyn (Richard)
Ritter, of Rockford, Iowa, Kathy Brierly, of Plymouth,
Iowa, Susan (Larry) Mausehund, of Rudd, Iowa, Patty (Lanne)
Book, of Klemme, Iowa, and Randy (Shannon) Brierly, of
Marble Rock; his grandchildren; and great-grandchildren;

CLEAR
LAKE - Carol Jacobsen, 74, of Clear Lake, died Sunday
(June 15, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient
Unit in Mason City of cancer.
Born Carol Anne Calvert, on Oct. 31, 1933, the daughter
of Thomas and Helen (James) Calvert in Carroll, she was
raised in Paton, where she graduated from Paton High
School in 1951. In 1953, she married Roger Jacobsen.
They raised two children and lived briefly in Perry and
Ottumwa, before moving to Clear Lake in 1970.
Carol was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She was a
member of Zion Lutheran Church of Clear Lake and
volunteered countless hours at the Village Store in
Clear Lake. Whatever she did in her life, whether
enjoying her love of gardening, playing bridge,
exercising or traveling, it was all about friends and
friendships she made along the way.
Carol is survived by her daughter, Darcy Hook and her
husband, Steve, of Mason City, son, Thomas Jacobsen, of
Ames; four grandchildren, Stephanie Stine and Sean Hook,
of Mason City and Mujigae and Peri Jacobsen of Ames;
great-grandson, Jakob Stine, of Mason City; and her
beloved, cat Beau.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband of 43 years,
Roger; and her sisters, Treva Cox and Elaine Knapper.
According to her wishes, no funeral, visitation or
memorial service has been scheduled.
She requested that her body be cremated and that her
ashes be scattered together with those of her husband.

Jennison, Margaret "Gie"

RICEVILLE - Margaret "Gie" Jennison, 96, of Riceville,
died Sunday (June 15, 2008) at the Riceville Family Care
Facility.
Memorial Services will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, June
21, 2008 at the Welcome Center in Riceville, followed by
a 10:30 a.m. Mass at the Immaculate Conception Catholic
Church in Riceville officiated by Father Atwood.
Margaret Rose (Benson) Jennison was born May 12, 1912 in
Riceville, the daughter of John "Jack" Benson and Anne (Seavy)
Benson. She was united in marriage to Lloyd Jennison on
August 19, 1927.
Gie entered a life of farming and raising a family on
the Jennison Family farm. There she raised seven
children while farming at her husband's side during the
Great Depression. For several years she also drove the
school bus for the Jamestown Township.
In 1967, Gie and her husband, Lloyd, purchased the Burke
Hotel in downtown Riceville, renaming it the Jennison
Inn. They operated the hotel and dining establishment
until retirement in 1977. Hundreds of locals and
visitors were seated in the spacious dining room or cozy
front snack bar for home cooked meals and hot coffee.
After retirement, the Jennison Inn became the gathering
place for her large and boisterous family and her many
friends. There she reigned over activities with an iron
will, a grand sense of humor, and frequent '9 no trump'
or higher bids. Gie enjoyed all music and the many, many
family sing-alongs over the years. In earlier years, she
also enjoyed producing variety shows for the Riceville
community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband,
her siblings, and three of her children: Anne Irene,
Jean Jenkins, Charles Jennison and two sons-in-law,
Keith Yager and Tom Jenkins.
She is survived by her children: Mary Yager of
Riceville; Jane (Darald) Elliott, of Osage; James "Sam"
(Maureen) Jennison, of Burlington; Steve (Carol)
Jennison of Littleton, CO.; and daughter-in-law, Laura
Jennison, of Riceville. She will be greatly missed by 22
grandchildren, and over 52 great-grandchildren and
great-great grandchildren.
Memorials may be given to the Riceville Food Pantry, the
Elf Shelf in Riceville, or the charity of the donor's
choice.

Terry Gene Theilen was born on Sept. 20, 1950, in Mason
City, the son of Elmer and Doris (Lamoreux) Theilen.
Terry graduated from Mason City High School in the Class
of 1969. After graduation he followed in his father's
footsteps as a union ironworker. Working for the Local
67 of Des Moines, he helped with the IDS Building in
Minneapolis, and the Principal Building in Mason City,
just to name a few. Terry worked as a union ironworker
for 23 years.
Terry was united in marriage to Nancy Sweeney on Sept.
4, 1976; to this union three children were born. For the
past several years Terry worked for the Local 33 as a
union plumber steamfitter.
Terry loved his dogs Maggie and Toby, gardening,
computers, listening to music, watching NASCAR and
cooking. He greatly enjoyed Corvettes! His greatest love
was spending time with his family and friends. He will
be remembered for being a helpful hand. He was a member
of the Ironworkers Local Union 67, Plumber Steamfitter's
Local Union 33 and a member of the Corvette Association.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Theilen; children,
Amanda (Joe) Klatt, Joshua Theilen and Ryan Theilen;
grandchildren, Owen and Oliver Klatt; sister, Dawn
Theilen and Darick; brother, Jerry (Mary) Theilen, all
of Mason City; sister-in-law, Carolyn (Michael) Lura, of
Gardner, Kan.; brother-in- law, Jim (Linda) Sweeney, of
Mason City; along with aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews,
and many friends.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, parents,
mother and father-in-law; and two special dogs

- Dessie Christina Beck, 87, of Lakota, died Tuesday
(June 17, 2008) at the Hospice of North Iowa, Inpatient
Unit in Mason City.
Funeral services for Dessie Christina Beck will be at
10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 20, at First Presbyterian
Church in Lakota with the Rev. Ron Wheeler officiating.
Burial will be at Maple Hill Cemetery in Lakota.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 19,
at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Bancroft.
Dessie was born Sept. 27, 1920, near Lakota to Albert
and Johanna Heyens Bosma. She received her education in
the rural schools near Ledyard and Lakota. After her
schooling, Dessie helped her parents on the farm.
Dessie was married to Kenneth Beck on Sept. 27, 1941, at
First Presbyterian Church in Lakota. The couple farmed
near Lakota for more than 40 years. They retired in 1985
and moved into Lakota.
Dessie's husband Kenneth preceded her in death on Feb.
12, 1987.
Dessie was a member of First Presbyterian Church in
Lakota where she was a member of the Church Circle and
the Presbyterian Women.
She also belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary in
Lakota.
Dessie enjoyed traveling, and all types of handiwork.
She loved people and enjoyed visiting with her many
friends and family. She especially loved being with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Surviving are her children, Robert Beck and his special
friend Judy Hector of Fairmont, Minn.; Betty McShane of
Waseca, Minn.; Ella Hazelton and husband Al of Harlan,
Linda Beck of Odessa, Texas, and Dale Beck and wife
Jerrilynn of Norwalk. Also surviving are six
grandchildren, one step-grandson, six
great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and a host
of friends.
Dessie was preceded in death by her parents; her
husband, Kenneth; four brothers, Herman, Heyo, Albert
"Hap" and Edward; and two sisters, Gertrude Picht and
Hannah Wilcox.

OSAGE - Gerald Francis, 83, of Osage died Tuesday (June
17, 2008) at home.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday,
June 21, at First United Methodist Church in Osage with
the Rev. Dr. J. Samuel Subramanian officiating. Burial
will be at the Osage Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 20, at
Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue
one hour before services at the church.
Gerald was born January 25, 1925, the son of Otha and
Wanda (Lundy) Francis. He attended all 12 years at the
Orchard School, graduating in 1942.
Gerald was united in marriage to Zella Fritcher in 1948
at First United Methodist Church in Osage.
Gerald and Zella farmed near New Haven for 42 years and
then retired and moved to Osage. Gerald enjoyed farming
and caring for livestock and kept a few cattle and sheep
until his death.
He was a Hawkeye fan and seldom missed watching a
basketball or football game.
He enjoyed playing 500 with the card club and also at
the Senior Center.
His survivors include his wife, Zella Francis of Osage;
sons, Gary (Barbara) Francis of Osage, Herbert (Claire)
Francis of Las Cruces, N.M., Kenneth (Shea) Francis of
Cedar Rapids and Robert Francis of Pierre, S.D.; a
daughter, Colleen (Mike) Counsell of Gainesville, Fla.;
three sisters, Maxine Dostart, Betty Kleckner and
Juanita Halvorson, all of Osage; nine grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; a son,
David, in 1986; a son, James, in 2008; and two brothers,
Melvin and Keith.

OSAGE - Lloyd F. Indra, 92, died Tuesday (June 17, 2008)
at Faith Home in Osage.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Friday, June 20, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in
Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will
be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage with military
honors at the grave by Osage VFW Post 7920.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Champion-Bucheit
Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 5:30 p.m.
Lloyd was born Oct. 26, 1915, to Joseph and Amelia
(Hovel) Indra, on a farm west of Osage.
He helped on the family farm until 1943, when he entered
the U.S. Army in Camp Fannin, Texas. There, he
specialized in telephone communications.
He was sent overseas in 1944 to New Guinea in the South
Pacific. After that island was liberated, Lloyd was sent
to Luzon in the Philippines in the initial invasion of
Manila. There he received the bronze star for repairing
telephone lines under enemy fire. He was a member of the
Headquarters Battery of the 51st Field Artillery Unit of
the (Red Star) Sixth Division. When Japan surrendered,
Lloyd was sent to South Korea for occupation duty before
coming home in 1946.
He then farmed and worked as an electrician for Arnie
Bartsch and Bill Nack. In 1955, he became self-employed
as an electrician.
Lloyd was a life member of Osage VFW Post 7920.
Lloyd is survived by his brother, John Indra of Osage
and numerous cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister,
Leona Indra.

Grafton, died Tuesday (June 17, 2008) at the Muse Norris
Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

20, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton with the Rev.
Wayne Ellingson and Irmgard Ellingson, associate in
ministry, officiating. Burial will be at St. John's
Cemetery-Rock Township, rural Osage.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, June 19,
at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Grafton and will continue
one hour before services at the church.
Bonnie was born March 1, 1931, a mile and a half east of
Grafton, in Worth County, to Art and Dora (Schultz)
Trettin.
She was baptized March 21, 1931, and on March 25, 1945,
was confirmed in her faith at Emmanuel Lutheran Church
in Grafton.
She graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1949.
On Sept. 7, 1951, she was united in marriage with Elery
Kruger at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
She was a devoted and active lifelong member of Emmanuel
Lutheran Church in Grafton. She taught Sunday school for
25 years and was a longtime member and officer of
Emmanuel Women of the ELCA.
Bonnie was a Worth County homemaker health aide for 19
years, a certified nurse aide at the Good Samaritan Home
in St. Ansgar for seven years, and a morning cook at the
Gobbler's Roost in Grafton.
She loved her family and her many friends, enjoyed
cooking for her guys and keeping up her acreage.
Bonnie is survived by her five sons: Thomas Kruger of
Grafton, James and Rose Kruger of Grafton, Mike and
Jeanie Kruger of Grand Junction, Colo., Joel and Julie
Kruger of St. Ansgar, and Jon Kruger and his friend,
Susan, of Aurora, Ind.; her nine grandchildren: Tim,
Chris, Lynn, Jamy and his wife, Holly, Jessena, Lindsey,
Kory, Kelsi and Stacey; one great-granddaughter, Hannah;
one great-grandson, Zack; two step-granddaughters:
Noelle Blair and Nicole (Toby) Axelsson; and four
step-great-granddaughters: Aubrie and McKenna Blair and
Hannah and Emilie Axelsson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elery Kruger,
in 1989, and by her parents.
May God bless Bonnie's memory among us, and may God
grant faith, comfort, and peace to her family and
friends.

Marion was born Sept. 28, 1917, in Chicago, Ill., the
daughter of Albert and Veroncia Francis (Faehtke)
Vodicka. She graduated from Glenbard High School, in
Glen Ellyn, Ill., in 1935. She graduated from St. Mary's
College, South Bend, Ind., in 1939 with a history
degree. She took graduate courses in teaching criteria
at Northern Illinois, DeKalb, Ill.
Marion married Richard D. Casey Sr. on Nov. 8, 1941, in
Glen Ellyn, Ill.
Marion owned and operated Casey Drug Co. in Mason City
and Clear Lake with her husband Richard from 1946 to
1975. Following her husband's death, she owned and
operated Casey Drug Co. from 1975 to 1986.
Marion enjoyed University of Iowa and Notre Dame
football, she was an avid sports fan, and voracious
reader. She enjoyed cards and cribbage, and was an
extensive world traveler. Marion was known to be a
gracious host, great cook and her brownies will be
missed by all.
Marion was a member of St. Joseph's Parish for more than
60 years, PEO, Girl Scouts of America, Clear Lake Yacht
Club, several book clubs, bridge clubs, OT, and the
Mason City Country Club.
Marion is survived by her children, Susan D'Amico and
her husband, Richard, of Tujunga, Calif., Richard Casey
Jr. and his wife, Bobbie, of Clear Lake, Elizabeth Casey
of Santa Clarita, Calif., William Casey and his wife,
Carol, of Iowa City, and Mary Casey and her husband,
Sal, of Tujunga, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth
D'Amico and her husband, Patrick, Gregory D'Amico and
his wife, Emily, William Casey, Bridget Casey Gutsche
and her husband, Ted, Steven Barsevick, Kaitlin Doucette
and Margaret Casey; two great-grandchildren, Seth and
Veroncia Houghton; brother, Albert Vodicka Jr. and his
wife, Eleanor; sister, Irene Monaghen; sister-in-law,
Ann Casey Johnstone; and many nieces and nephew's.
Marion was preceded in death by her parents, husband,
Richard; two sisters, three brothers-in-law and one
sister-in-law.

Kenneth Roger Dixon was born on Feb. 12, 1939, in
Northwood, to Emil and Almira Dixon and Kenny attended
school in Manly and Mason City. The night of graduation,
he left to serve his country with the Air Force for four
years. Kenny loved to enjoy the outdoors, especially if
it involved fishing on the Mississippi River or close to
his home in Clear Lake.
One of Mr. Dixon's favorite pastimes was making new
friends wherever he happened to be and conversations
with these newly-formed acquaintances came easy. This
served him well during his16 years of co-ownership and
operation of his automobile dealership in Clear Lake.
In his younger years, he greatly enjoyed dancing with
his wife and Polka music always got his feet moving.
Mr. Dixon is survived by his wife of 40 years, Karlene
Akers Dixon; one son, Chad Dixon and wife Cheri, and
granddaughter, Kimberly Dixon of Humble, Texas; sisters,
Janet Lane of Mason City, Marlene Rague and her husband,
Roger, of Sun Lake. Ariz., Geraldine Pacheco and her
husband, Able, of Thornton, Colo., and Diane Simmons of
Parker, Colo.

Clear Lake, died Wednesday (June 18, 2008) at the
Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

2008, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N.
Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with Pastor Rhoda Preston
officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in
Mason City.

Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.
Shirley was born March 21, 1918, in Britt, the son of
Ellis and Hilma (Johnson) Dudgeon. He attended Britt
High School and graduated with the Class of 1939.
Shirley enlisted with the United States Navy in 1939,
served in World War II, and was a Chief Motor
Machinist's Mate and was honorably discharged in 1945.
Shirley was one of the last Pearl Harbor survivors! He
was on the Battleship Helena with his brother, and had
recently attended the 50th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor
with his wife, Dorothy.
Dorothy Hanson and Shirley were married March 2, 1946,
at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Mason City, to
this union five children were born.
After he was honorably discharged, Shirley became a
farmer. His land and his animals, whether it be cows,
pigs or chickens were very important to him. Shirley was
never materialistic and his greatest joy came from
helping his fellow neighbors and farmers.
He was a very patient, caring and loving father and
husband, although he was known to be a bit stubborn at
times. Shirley enjoyed taking his family fishing,
camping and to the Iowa State Fair, in his younger
years, and then bowling, golfing and playing pool as he
grew older. He also helped with Meals on Wheels, and
went to the Senior Citizens Center in Clear Lake every
day for lunch. He and Dorothy also loved to spend their
winters in Texas in their later years and they made many
good friends. Shirley had three main passions in life,
farming, the military and friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Dorothy of Clear
Lake; his sons, Michael (Cathy) Dudgeon, of Kansas City,
Mo., Patrick Dudgeon, of Clear Lake, and Peter Dudgeon,
of Des Moines; his grandson, Bo Dudgeon, of Arlington,
Texas; his granddaughter, Lisa Kuchenbecker, of
Arkansas; his great-grandchild, Lydia Kuchenbecker, also
from Arkansas; his brother, Dale Dudgeon, of Boston,
Mass.; sister-in-law, Gloria Dudgeon, of Britt; special
aunts, Fannie Zeigler, of Mason City, and Elsie Berhow,
of Kanawha; and many other relatives and friends.
Shirley was preceded in death by his parents; daughters,
Lisa and Linda; and his brothers, Floyd and Wayne.

- Jerry Ones, 57, of Frederic, Wis., and formerly of
Osage, died Wednesday (June 18, 2008) near Osage.
Jerry was born June 24, 1950, in Osage, the son of
Justin and Clara (Kroneman) Ones. He attended and
graduated from Osage High School in 1968. Jerry was
united in marriage to Julie Heitmann in 1972 at Rock
Creek Lutheran Church and they made their home in Nora
Springs. They later divorced.
Jerry was employed at Tatum's Hardware Hank in Nora
Springs. He then was the owner and operator of Ones
Plumbing and Heating. In 2004, he moved to Frederic,
Wis., to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
Jerry enjoyed bowling, playing pool, taking walks, and
spending time with his children, grandchildren, and
family.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June
22, 2008, at the Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269
Foothill Ave. in Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes
officiating. Burial will be in the Rock Creek Cemetery.

Don was born May 15, 1920, in rural Clear Lake, the son
of C. Edmund and Marion (Aitchison) Ransom. He attended
country schools and Mason City High School. Don farmed
in the local area until he started work at Decker's. He
married Lucile Harriott March 26, 1939, in Fort Des
Moines.
Don and his brother Keith opened their own business,
Ransom Brothers Garage in Ventura. He later worked for
Dewey Electric as their shop foreman. Don and Jim
Schmidt invented a stump picker that was used in the
southern states. He also opened a shop to repair small
motors in Ventura and he fixed clocks.
He enjoyed listening to all types of Blue Grass music,
playing Blue Grass music and attending Blue Grass
festivals. He was a partner in stockcar racing team No.
13 and loved snowmobiling.
Don was a member of Ventura Redeemer Lutheran Church. He
was a longtime member of the Ventura Lions Club where he
served as treasurer. He was a member of the Ventura Fire
Department for over 61 years and also served the
Protective Association Board as Secretary. He was on one
of the first City Councils of Ventura.
Don is survived by, and will be dearly missed by his
daughter, Donita Wood and her husband Don, of Pinetop,
Ariz.; brother, Keith Ransom and his wife, June, of
Ventura; sisters, Lois Hubbard and her late husband,
Lynn, of Mason City, and Ruth Norris and her husband,
Chuck, of Mason City; two grandchildren, Mark Wood and
his wife, Christy, of Mesa, Ariz., and Jeff Wood and his
wife, Bridget, of Lakeside, Ariz.; and five
great-grandchildren, Kelly Wood, Andrew Wood, Aaron
Wood, Tyler Lang and Cassidy Suprik; and many nieces,
nephews, and cousins.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife,
Lucile, who passed away Feb. 5, 2002.

Warren D. Smidt, 68, of rural Clayton, Wis., died
suddenly early Friday morning (June 13, 2008) as the
result of injuries sustained in an auto accident.
Warren Donald Smidt was born on Feb. 4, 1940, in Forest
City, the son of Meindert and Minnie (DeWall) Smidt. He
grew up in Woden, and graduated from Woden High School
in 1958.
Warren worked on his parent's farm for several years
before he entered the United States Air Force in 1963
and was honorably discharged in 1967.
Warren was married to Phyllis Brooks on June 29, 1966,
in Britt. They continued to work on the family farm and
raised six children, Donald, Frances, Mark, Keith, John,
and Charles.
In 1980, Warren moved his family to Rice Lake, Wis.,
where he operated a dairy farm. It was also during this
time that he began driving a truck for Buhr Brothers in
Clear Lake, Wis.
On April 12, 1997, Warren was married to Beverly Curtis
at Moe Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, and together they
made their home in rural Clayton, Wis. He retired in
2004.
Warren is preceded in death by his son, Charles Smidt;
his parents, Meindert and Minnie Smidt; step-grandson,
Bennett Walter Curtis; great-grandchild, Thomas Laverne
Amick Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Curtis; sons and
daughter, Donald Smidt (Denise Wick), Frances (Mike)
Flaherty, Mark (Patty) Smidt, Keith (Shantel) Smidt,
John Smidt; and daughter-in-law, Sherri Smidt; step-sons
and step-daughters, Kathy (Willie) Dux, Patty (Wayne)
Sullwold, Jim (Marty) Curtis, David (Shayne) Curtis,
Mike Curtis (Heidi Bloomer), Becky (Clint) Waalen, Tim
(Shawn) Curtis, and Jeff (Jennifer) Curtis; six
grandchildren; 30 step-grandchildren; five
step-great-grandchildren; former spouse, Phyllis
(Brooks) Smidt; brother and sister, John Smidt, of Woden,
and Grace Barnes, of Iowa City; and many other
relatives, family and friends.

LAKE MILLS - Opal A. Solomonson, 96, of Lake Mills, died
Thursday (June 19, 2008) at the Lake Mills Care Center
in Lake Mills.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at
the Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, with Pastor W.
Paul Weeg officiating. Burial will be at North Prairie
Cemetery in rural Scarville.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the
Mittelstadt Funral Home in Lake Mills and one hour prior
to services on Monday at the church.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa, Waldorf
College, Lutheran World Relief or the Salem Window Fund.
