John Malcolm Ott was born on Feb. 4, 1915, in Franklin
County, Pa., the son of Roy Conrad and Easter March
(Hill) Ott. He was the third of 14 children born to his
parents.
At the age of two, Malcolm moved with his family to
Iowa. After a short time the family returned to
Pennsylvania for a few years but eventually relocated
and permanently made Iowa their home. Malcolm attended
rural country school and high school in Greene.
While living in the Dougherty and Greene area, he
assisted with his family's grain farming operation, the
profession he maintained all of his adult life and
always residing in Floyd and Butler counties.
On Aug. 29, 1940, on his family's farm near Greene,

daughters and a son.

rides into the countryside to check out the area crops
and farms.
Malcolm was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church
in Marble Rock for more than 40 years and later a member
of the First Baptist Church in Charles City, where he
served as a deacon. When he physically could no longer
attend church services, Malcolm found religious comfort
in watching television ministries.

BELMOND
- Rosa VanGerpen, 102, went to join her heavenly family
on Monday (June 9, 2008) at the Belmond Health Care
Center in Belmond.
Funeral services for Rosa VanGerpen will be held at
10:30 a.m., Saturday, June 14, at Calvary Baptist Church
in Belmond with the Rev. Gary Schneider officiating.
Interment will be at the Belmond Cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 13, at
Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S., and one hour
prior to services at the church on Saturday.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to

Rosa Frances was born Nov. 22, 1905, in Aplington, the
eleventh of 12 children, the daughter of Jann and
Engelina Bruns. Her parents were farmers, immigrants
from Ostfriesland, Germany.
When Rosa was only 2, her father died. At the age of 7,
her mother remarried and Aeilt Reemtsma of Aplington
became her stepfather.
Rosa attended public school in Aplington for several
years. At age 13 she was baptized and joined Aplington
Baptist Church.
A few years later, she found employment as a housekeeper
for a retired sea captain in nearby Ackley.
On Jan. 5, 1927, in Aplington, she was united in
marriage to John J. VanGerpen, a feed dealer from
Buffalo Center, where they moved and started a family.
For three years they farmed, then set up a hatchery and
feed mill operation which continued for a decade or so.
After briefly residing in Hampton and Sheffield, they
moved to Belmond in 1941.
As a loving mother, Rosa's greatest joy was her family.
She enjoyed cooking and caring for flowers for which she
seemed to have a special talent.
Her church affiliation was Baptist.
Those thankful for sharing in Rosa's life are all eight
of her children: the Rev. Emory VanGerpen and his wife
Phyllis of Washington, Iowa; Myrna Vandermeulen of
Colorado Springs, Colo.; Arthur VanGerpen and his wife,
Carol, of LaHabra, Calif.; Irvin VanGerpen and his
special friend, Carol Lockett, of Hampton; Merle
VanGerpen and his wife, Eunice, of Webster City; Edythe
Henthorne and her husband, Bill, of Denver, Colo.; John
VanGerpen and his wife, Pam, of Garner; and Dr. Royce
VanGerpen and his wife, Cherie, of Spokane, Wash.; 22
grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both parents, her
step-father, and her husband, John VanGerpen in 1993.
Her life span, despite its hardships, was longer than
any of her 11 siblings.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to
direct memorials to Belmond Health Care Center or
Calvary Baptist Church in Belmond.

CLEAR
LAKE - Marcia A. Connell, 81, of Clear Lake, died
peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on

Marcia Jean Ashland was born on November 28, 1926, to

Grocery stores.
She enjoyed sailing on the lake and the outdoors. She
enjoyed fishing, pheasant hunting and trapshooting with
her father.
She graduated from Clear Lake High School, attended
Lindenwood College in St. Charles, Missouri, and
graduated with a business degree from the University of
Iowa.
Marcia worked as a buyer for Marshall Fields in Chicago
after graduating from college.
Marcia and James F. Connell were married on September 3,
1949, and lived in Iowa City before moving to Clear Lake
where Jim managed what is now Woodford Lumber and Home
Company.
Their first daughter, Sarah, was born while Jim was
serving in the Army in the Korean Conflict.
She was active in the Girl Scouts with her daughters and
headed up the Red Cross swimming program at City Beach.
Marcia had a dry sense of humor, was a hard worker and
staunchly independent until breaking a hip a few years
ago.
Marcia enjoyed taking family trips in the summer, going
on fishing trips to Canada with Jim and good friends,
golfing, hunting for morel mushrooms and having picnics
with family and friends.

activities.

reinvest in the companies.
She enjoyed wishing employees happy birthday and keeping
up with their childrens' activities.
She also believed strongly in giving back to the
community. She established scholarships at Clear Lake
High School and North Iowa Area Community College.
Marcia and her family are grateful they could protect
one of the last stretches of lakeshore wilderness on
Clear Lake. The family gave up the property right in
1992 to develop what is now Woodford Ashland Lone Tree
Point Nature Area via a conservation easement with the
Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation. The family still owns
the property, but allows public access for low impact
use.
