Alden, Hartley

DOUGHERTY - Hartley Alden, 86, of Dougherty, died Thursday (May 29, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 2, at West Fork United Methodist Church, 2200 Tulip Ave. in Sheffield, with Pastor Elsa Lawry presiding. Interment will be at West Fork Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, 203 Maple St. in Sheffield.

Hartley Albert Alden was born to Floyd and Elsie (Hafermann) Alden on Nov. 14, 1921, near Latimer. He joined brothers Kenneth and Dale and one sister, Irma, with sister, Selma, born eight years later.

Hartley and siblings were the 10th generation of John and Priscilla Alden who came to America on the Mayflower.

In 1929 the family moved to the farm a quarter mile west of Dougherty. Three years later his mother died of tuberculosis. Fortunately, the Alden children were kept together on the Dougherty farm where Hartley continued to live until he got married.

As a boy, Hartley and his brothers loved the creek that ran through the farm. Besides swimming in the summer and skating in the winter, at age eight Hartley began his lifelong passion for running trap lines along that creek. He trapped and sold the furs for more than 70 years and could tell stories about it for hours.

Thanks to the influence and tender caring of his brother Kenneth and sister Irma, Hartley completed his schooling through the eighth grade and attended church and Sunday school at what is now West Fork United Methodist Church. Ken also helped Hartley and Dale learn the farming business and get started on their own.

Dale's future wife, Maxine, introduced Hartley to her friend, Dorothy Tweed, at the Mason City skating rink in 1945. They were married Jan. 26, 1946, in Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City by Rev. Alvin Rogness.

In January 1947 they moved to their current home, purchasing the farm for $100 per acre. It did not have a house yet, so Hartley built a 10' by 20' house to live in while he moved a schoolhouse to the acreage and remodeled it for his family.

Their first child was born while they lived in what would soon become the brooder house. Later the brooder house served as a playhouse for the children and then became Hartley's trapping shed.

Hartley and Dorothy had four children, Barbara, Holly, Janet and David, each born three years apart.

He worked hard to improve his homestead by planting trees, constructing buildings and cement yards for his livestock, and pattern tiling his farmland. He was passionate about farming, but even more passionate about his family.

He chose hobbies which could include his children and grandchildren as much as possible.

In 1964, he began his annual treks to Canada to fish and instilled the love of fishing in most of his grandchildren. Some of the Alden family's most cherished memories are from those fishing trips.

Hartley farmed with the help of Marvin Crooks and later Doug O'Connor and son David.

He retired from his farming operation in 1984 when David took over the business. He still loved to help in any way he could until 2006 when he suffered a stroke.

He died Thursday, May 29, from complications of a hip fracture.

Hartley didn't like to be the center of attention, quietly going about his business.

Besides farming, fishing and trapping he enjoyed reading and watching Westerns on television.

He was a lifelong member of the West Fork Church. His wisdom about life, kind heart and gentle spirit will be sorely missed by family and friends.

Hartley is survived by Dorothy, his wife of 62 years; sister, Selma Graham; children, Barbara (Dean) Hutchison, Holly (Tom) FitzSimmons, Janet (Ray) Wierson and David (Kathy) Alden; grandchildren, Todd (Jennifer) Hutchison, Amy (Marty Wolske) Hutchison, Paul (Susan) Hutchison, Julian and Colin Eighmy, Scott Wierson, Jennifer (Lee) Smith, and Jeff (Kate) Wierson; seven great-grandchildren and many other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Kenneth and Dale; sister Irma Riggins and her husband Worth; and grandson Roger Samuel Alden.

Those wishing to extend memorials or expressions of sympathy may direct them to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 Second St. S.E., Mason City, IA 50401.

John Sebo Steenhard was born on July 28, 1922, in Chapin to Joe and Gesina (Dannen) Steenhard. He was the sixth of seven children born to his parents and educated in the Chapin rural country school.

At the tender age of 11, John's parents both died together in a car accident. He went to live with and was parented and loved as a son by Harvey and Eva Hemmes of Latimer.

John realized the value of hard work at an early age, a trait he was known for all his life.

John was inducted into the U.S. Army on July 26, 1944, from Fort Snelling, Minn., and served his country in the Philippines during WWII. While in direct conflict, John was seriously injured. He was honorably discharged from his military duties on May 7, 1946, from Brooke General Hospital in Texas. John was awarded a Purple Heart and returned to Iowa.

Following his return to civilian life, John engaged in livestock and grain farming with his brothers, George and Else. He lived most of his adult life in Franklin and Cerro Gordo counties.

John reaffirmed his Christian faith during his adulthood.

On Dec. 17, 1949, at the Assembly of God Church in Mason City, John was united in marriage to Evelyn Mae Shadle. The couple became the proud parents of a son, Stanley.

John and Evelyn continued farming south of Clear Lake until 1962 when they made the decision to move to Mason City.

John accepted a job position with DuBois Farm Supply, working with a variety of farm related duties.

He later became employed with Holsum Bakery and a few years later at Butt'r Topp Bakery until his time of retirement.

John was a gentle and patient man. It is claimed by his family that "John would give you the shirt off his back!" It seemed he was always available when anyone needed assistance of any kind.

John found great joy in tending to his yard and flower gardens, spending time with his son, Stan, or completing intricate woodworking projects.

He enjoyed adding a new hat to his collection and was known at times to be quite the prankster!

John is survived by his wife, Evelyn Steenhard and his son, Stanley Steenhard, both of Mason City; his brother, George (Merle) Steenhard of Rockwell; his three sisters-in-law, Phyllis Steenhard of Meservey, Marge Steenhard of Belmond and Molly Steenhard of Indianola; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Robert Gean Avery, the son of John and Eva (Fischer) Avery, was born on April 23, 1931, in Miller, S.D. His family moved to the Eagle Grove area when he was a young boy. He attended country school and the Eagle Grove school until his family moved to Rowan in his freshman year of high school. Bob graduated from the Rowan High School in the class of 1949.
He and Anna Mae (Annie) Tudor were married at the Little Brown Church on Jan. 6, 1952. Prior to his induction into the Army in March of 1952, he worked for the railroad and various farmers in the area.
Bob was particularly proud of his service to his country, including a year-long deployment to Korea, where he served as a military policeman. He was honorably discharged in March 1954 and returned to the Rowan community where he lived for the rest of his life.
With help from their parents, Bob and Annie began farming in 1954 on rented land north of town. He was known for his clowning and trained mule, his skill as a square dance caller and amateur auctioneer, his drumming in the Aitken Hearts and Country Cousins, his decorative and humorous welding, and his love of stories, practical jokes and tall tales. Many times only the twinkle in his eye gave him away.
Bob was a great role model and teacher for his family. He was especially proud and supportive of Annie and daughter-in-law Terri's musical performances.

MASON CITY - Merlene I. "Jackie" Reed, 84, of 1261 Goodman, High Island, Texas, and formerly of Rockwell, Swaledale and Mason City, died Sunday (June 1, 2008) at her home in Texas.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 6, at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E., Mason City, with James Fullerton, CFSP, CPC, officiating.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to send donations to Hospice. Condolences, thoughts, prayers and stories may be sent to the family at www.Fullertonfh.com.
Merlene was born on Nov. 4, 1923, in Rockwell, the daughter of Henry and Margaret "Thomas" Arndt. She was raised and attended school in Rockwell. Yes, she walked to school and several times was chased by a bull. At an early age and through her life she played guitar and sang. The family remembers many enjoyable evenings singing with their mom.
She was united in marriage to William "Bill" M. Reed on Sept. 16, 1950, in Mason City. They made their home on a farm near Swaledale where they had horses and other animals.
Her green thumb was evident in her flowers and huge vegetable garden. From that garden she made the best use of the produce. She made the best potato salad ever and loved to bake cookies for the kid's school events. Over a four-year period she helped her husband build a house in Clear Lake.
She sewed for the family and made the grandchildren blankets, pillows and stuffed toys. In her later years she would make sequined calendars for everyone. Going to the Surf Ballroom on Saturdays with all the relatives was a special treat for her and her husband. In her spare time she was a huge Michael Jordan fan with the Chicago Bulls. When she could still get around she attended her grandchildren's sporting events.
