OSAGE
- Marie Christine Birkedal Field, age 90, formerly of
Osage, died peacefully at her home in San Gabriel,
Calif., Wednesday (June 4, 2008).
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, June 9,
at Rock Creek Lutheran Church, 3269 Foothill Ave.,
Osage, with the Rev. R. Dawson Tornes officiating and
assisted by the pastors in Marie's family. Burial will
be in Rock Creek Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Champion-Bucheit
Funeral Home in Osage with family time at 7 p.m.
Visitation will continue one hour before services at the
church.
Marie was born Oct. 20, 1917, at home in Dunn County,
N.D., the daughter of Peter and Sara (Motland) Birkedal.
She was baptized immediately at birth because they
thought she may not live. For the first years of her
life, the family spoke only Norwegian. When it was time
for Marie to go to school the family moved to a farm
near Osage where many relatives lived and Marie learned
English. She graduated from Otranto High School and
received an associate of arts degree in elementary
education from Waldorf College. Marie taught grades 3 to
8 in Carpenter, Plymouth and Osage from 1937-43. She
subsequently taught special education in Osage from
1964-83. In 1969 she received her bachelor of arts
degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar
Falls.
Marie was married to John Field, Jan. 28, 1942, at Rock
Creek Lutheran Church by the Rev. C. B. Gunderson. They
raised their family on a farm west of Osage. John died
in 1998. For the 10 years prior to his death, they spent
winters in California and came back to Iowa for planting
and harvesting. After John's death, Marie lived with her
daughter Geraldine in California, but still visited her
farm in Iowa every year. Marie was a life long member of
Rock Creek Lutheran Church and its organizations. She
was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa, Sons of Norway,
American Legion Auxiliary, and Shakespearean Club. She
was secretary of the Maakestad Picnic for many years and
served North Iowa CEC as president and SECDC as
consulting teacher for Area II. Scrapbooks, photo
albums, hosting family get-togethers and family history
were very important to her. She was especially known for
her Christmas family newsletter. She enjoyed traveling
very much. John and Marie drove through all 50 states,
the Canadian provinces, Mexico, Germany and Scandinavia.
They also traveled in England, Japan and Korea. Many of
these trips were happy times with the family. Family was
very important to both John and Marie. John did not live
to see Kai (age 6), Lilly (age 3), and John (age 1), but
Marie was able to enjoy these new little members of the
family. Her last trip was to Missouri to be at John's
baptism on June 1, 2008.
Marie had struggled with Parkinson's Disease since 1999.
Everyone admired her courageous spirit. She still went
to church every Sunday and attended family gatherings
and concerts. She was an inspiration to all of us. The
picture appearing with this obituary was taken on her
90th birthday.
Marie is survived by three daughters, Carolyn Cassidy,
Logansport, Ind., Geraldine Keeling, San Gabriel,
Calif., and Joanne Field, Topeka, Kan.; a son, Donald
Field, wife Kye-Suk and daughter Kai Marie, Topeka,
Kan.; two grandsons, Brendon Cassidy of Sherman Oaks,
Calif., Michael Cassidy and wife, Elizabeth, and
children Lilly and John, Warrensburg, Mo., one sister,
Margaret (Phillip) Luttio, and many nieces and nephews
and extended family.
Marie was preceded by her parents; her husband John; one
brother, Palmer; Carolyn's husband, Dick, Geraldine's
husband Steve;and many other loved ones. Blessed be
their memories.

BELMOND
- Harry M. Hinckley, 83, a lifelong
resident of the Belmond and Rowan area,
died Saturday (June 7, 2008) surrounded
by his loving family at the Belmond
Health Care Center in Belmond.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Wednesday, June 11, 2008, at the United
Church of Rowan, with Pastor Nancy
Hofmeister, officiating. Burial with
full military honors provided by the
Rowan Legion Post No. 159 will be at the
Graceland Cemetery, rural Rowan.
Visitation will be from 5 until 8 p.m.
today, June 10, 2008, at the Andrews
Funeral Home, 516 First St. in Belmond,
and continue one hour prior to services
on Wednesday at the church.
Those wishing to express their
sympathies through a memorial in Harry's
name may wish to direct them to the
family.
Harry Merton Hinckley, the son of Samuel
Dwight and Nellie Belle (Carter)
Hinckley, was born on June 17, 1924, on
his parents' farm in rural Rowan. He was
raised in rural Rowan and attended Rowan
area schools. As a young man, he
enlisted in the United States Army,
serving during World War II. Harry had
spent time during his military tenure in
Germany, as well, as having some
involvement in the Battle of the Bulge.
Upon being honorably discharged from the
service he returned to civilian life and
began farming in the rural Rowan area.
On Dec. 12, 1948, he was united in
marriage to Jean Aldrich at the church
in Rowan. Their union was blessed with
three children: Karen, Robert, and
Thomas. The couple continued to farm and
raise their family on the farm for a
number of years.
In addition to working the land and
raising a crop, Harry, along with his
wife and children, raised sheep and
milked dairy cattle. He had also spent
some years employed as a custodian at
the Rowan Schools during his time of
farming, as well as, doing some custom
farming and assisting other farmers with
their tasks. Harry eventually went to
work at Hagie Manfacturing in Clarion,
where he was diversified at many
different tasks including, welding,
cut-out torch work, and milling. He was
a dedicated employee at Hagie's for more
than 20 years. In later years, Harry
could be found helping out with the many
chores at Aldrich Tree Farm near Rowan.
Harry and his wife were wonderful
parents and always strived to include
their children in whatever they did.
Their children fondly remember family
trail rides together through Bingham
Park near Rowan and along the trails in
the Grove near Belmond. Trips to a horse
show, sledding at Gunderson's Hill and
an afternoon spent riding snowmobiles
are also one of many favorite
reflections.
Harry was truely an animal lover who
enjoyed the company of wide variety of
dogs and cats, especially his buddy
"Mel." He enjoyed watching and feeding
the squirrels and birds. He was very
much a horse enthusiast and had assisted
with the Iowa State High School Rodeo
for several years when Belmond was the
host. Harry was a longtime member of the
Belmond Trail Blazers Saddle Club. A
favorite adventure was taking his family
to the Chuck Wagon Races at the Clay
County Fair.
Harry was an excellent dancer and a very
proficient "two-stepper." He and Jean
spent many years together as members of
the "Grand Squares" square dancing club
in Rowan. Harry was always involved in
supporting his children and grandkids
many extra-curricular activities whether
it was their participation in the 4-H
programs, or any of their other
involvements. He received great joy in
attending many of his children and
grandchildren's sporting events and was
their Number One cheerleader on the
field and in life. Harry was also known
to do a little woodworking from time to
time.
Harry's wife, Jean passed away in
September of 1983. After a period of
time he enjoyed the special
companionship of Hazel Lester. The two
enjoyed each other's company for many
years.
Harry was a long-time and very active
member of the Rowan Lions Club. He was a
member of the Disabled American
Veterans, and a 61- year member of the
Rowan Legion Post No. 159. He was very
patriotic and proud of his military
service and that of his comrades, a
trait which shown through strongly in
his participation on the Rowan Military
Funeral Unit for 55 years.
In the later years of his life, Harry
might be seen tooling about town
checking up on the happenings of the
day, or stopping by to see what family
was up to. His daily excursions would
surely include a stop for a visit and
cup of coffee at Keeling Auto and a
possible run for parts. His daily
adventures would then include a meal or
two followed by his favorite chocolate
malt or ice cream at Laurie's Diner.
Later in the day, Harry might be found
spectating at an athletic event, car
race, or keenly following his favorite
Iowa Hawkeyes Basketball team on
television. Though he was somewhat quiet
in his mannerisms, he always seemed
ready for a little conversation with
those in his presence. His friendly
smile, the twinkle in his eyes, and warm
hello will be deeply missed by his
family and many friends.
Those left to cherish his memory include
his daughter, Karen (Harlan) Tulp, of
Belmond, and their children, Elizabeth
Tulp and special friend (Seth Malek), of
Garner, Holden and fiancee, (Tracy
Heifner), of Belmond, and Kyle and Heath
Tulp, both, of Belmond; Harry's son,
Robert (Robin) Hinckley, of Sheffield,
and their children, Micah (Marty)
Duncan, of Fraser, and McKray Hinckley,
of Sheffield; and Harry's son, Thomas (fiancee,
Tammy Strand) Hinckley, of Alta, and
Tom's children, Brandon, Joshua and
Mindy, all of Alta; also one sister,
Ardyce Riis, of Hampton; his
brother-in-law and wife, Dan and Mary
Aldrich, of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many
cousins, nieces,and nephews, also his
special friend, Hazel Lester, of Fort
Collins, Colo. and family.
He was preceded in death by his parents,
his wife, Jean; three sisters, Marie Utz,
Ruth Hoke, and Neva Aldrich, a brother,
Lyle Hinckley, and an infant brother,
Edward Hinckley.

Rasmussen, Dorothy L.
|
|
|
SHEFFIELD
- Dorothy L. Rasmussen, 88, of
Sheffield, passed away Saturday (June 7,
2008) at the Sheffield Care Center.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30
a.m. Thursday, June 12, at Richland
Lutheran Church, 300 Elm St., Thornton,
with the Rev. Sam Schmeling officiating.
Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery,
Sheffield.
Visitation will be held from 4 until 7
p.m. Wednesday, June 11, at the Retz-Grarup
Funeral Home, 203 Maple St., Sheffield.
Dorothy Leona Rasmussen was born on
Sept. 23, 1919, in Latimer; daughter of
Dick and Emma (Freie) Muhlenbruck.
Dorothy was the youngest of 10 children.
Her dad was so happy when she was born,
because he now had five boys and five
girls. When she was teased by her older
siblings she used to say, "Just wait
'til I get big and you get little." Her
father died on Christmas day when she
was seven years old, and because of
those memories, it was never a very
happy time for her.
Dorothy survived an accidental gunshot
wound in 1935. She wasn't expected to
survive at the time, so it was a miracle
that she lived to be 88. In 1936, she
married Earl Rasmussen. They lived on
various farms in Franklin County. In
1950, they moved to their farm west of
Sheffield, where they lived until 1963
when they moved to town.
Dorothy loved to go to the movies. When
Sue and Kathy were young the three of
them would go to the movies for less
than $1. Some of her favorite actors
were Cary Grant, Clark Gable, and Paul
Newman. Dorothy loved being a homemaker
and a mother.
She enjoyed cleaning, as well as
organizing, and was always making lists.
She enjoyed music and played the piano
"by ear." She lived through the
Depression and was very frugal her
entire life. Dorothy was always
concerned about her appearance. She
liked to have her hair fixed and her
lipstick on.
She was extremely proud of her
daughters, Janiece, Sue, and Kathy; and
her grandchildren for all of their
accomplishments. She was glad to have
lived so many years in her home, but was
frustrated that she was unable to clean
and do things for others. She had
resided in the Sheffield Care Center
since April. Dorothy had been in failing
health and was relieved to join her
Heavenly Father.
Dorothy will be greatly missed by her
three daughters, Janiece (Leo) Renberg,
of Sheffield; Sue (Bob) Rube, of
Sheffield; and Kathy (Dale) Brayton, of
Sheffield; six grandchildren, Lisa
(Fred) Wood, of Wake Forest, N.C.; Brad
Renberg, of West Des Moines; Jen
Swenson, of Sheffield; Andrew (Laura)
Brayton, of San Diego, Calif.; Valerie
Brayton, of Sheffield; and Alexander
Brayton, of Sheffield; and four
great-grandchildren, Alexa and Jackson
Wood, of Wake Forest, N.C.; and Jordan
and Jacob Swenson, of Sheffield; three
sisters-in-law, Lydia and Marian
Muhlenbruck, of Latimer; and Elaine
Rother, of Tampa, Fla.; and many nieces
and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her
parents; her husband Earl in 1994;
brothers, Harry, Alva, Bernhardt, Lloyd,
and Ervin Muhlenbruck; and sisters,
Tillie Plagge, Lydia Klunder, Agnes Lage,
and Alberta Muhlenbruck.
