BANCROFT - Mary Cleo Elsbecker, 70, of Bancroft, died Thursday (Jan. 24, 2008) at Kossuth Regional Health Center in Algona.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m.Monday at St. John's Catholic Church in Bancroft with Father Paul D. Bormann officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Bancroft.

Catherine Rose Fluhrer

MANLY - Catherine Rose Fluhrer 84, died Friday (Jan. 25, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.

Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 412 N. Broadway, Manly, with the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Manly.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 E. Spring St. in Manly, with a 4 p.m. scriptural service.

Memorials may be directed to the Catherine R. Fluhrer Memorial Fund.

Catherine Rose Brandt was born March 3, 1923, in Wesley, the daughter of Gustav and Ella Brandt. She graduated from Clear Lake High School.

Catherine met Verl Fluhrer at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake and later they were united in marriage, on Sept. 14, 1941, and to this union four children were born.

She enjoyed cooking, baking pies, gardening, quilting and making walnut crosses. She loved flowers especially violets and spending time with her family and friends. She was a great caretaker helping her neighbors and friends. Her greatest love was making Sunday dinner for her family.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and church guild; she was a Sunday school teacher for many years.

Catherine is survived by her children, Darlene (David) Diedrich of Grafton, Lester Fluhrer of Swaledale, and LuAnn (Alan) Adkisson of St. Ansgar; daughter-in-law, Jessie Fluhrer of Mitchell; grandchildren, Shelley Fluhrer and her friend, Steve, of Hastings, Minn., Randy (Chris) Fluhrer of Florida, Jennifer (Kevin) Klehm of Ankeny, and Chad (Jessica) Fluhrer; five great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen Henderson of Mason City and Mary Lou Hannafan of Clinton; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, son, Larry Fluhrer, siblings John, Gussie Jr. and Louis Brandt, Verna May Beeler, along with sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.

Orville S. Kinsel

HAMPTON - Orville S. Kinsel, 95, of Hampton, died Friday (Jan. 25, 2008) at the Hampton Health Care Center.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton, with the Rev. Dr. Edward R. Peterson officiating.

Josephine "Jo" Lady

ROCHESTER, Minn. - Josephine "Jo" Lady, 92, of Eyota, formerly of Rochester, died Thursday (Jan. 24, 2008) at St. Marys Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Resurrection Catholic Church in Rochester with the Rev. Thomas Loomis officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services on Wednesday at the church.

Josephine Puettman was born Nov. 6, 1915, in Stacyville. She was united in marriage to Milton "Roy" Lady on June 24, 1937, in Austin, Minn. He died in 1996.

They moved from Austin to Rochester in 1962. She worked at Kinsman Florist in Austin for many years, then working for the Clothing Care Center in Rochester from 1962 retiring in 1978.

She enjoyed spending time with her family doing crossword puzzles and playing cards.

She is survived by one son, Mason Lady of Rochester, Minn.; two sisters, Clara King of Austin, Minn., and Loretta Krebsbach of Stacyville.

Preceded in death by her husband, one brother, and eight sisters.

Gloria D. Rice

OSAGE - Gloria D. Rice, 81, of Osage, died Friday (Jan. 25, 2008) at the Mitchell County Health Center emergency room in Osage.

Gloria was born June 17, 1926, at Waterloo, the daughter of David and Ada (Griffin) Parr. She graduated from McIntire High School in 1943. After her graduation she moved to California to be with her parents. Following the end of the war, she returned to Osage.

Gloria was employed at Parr's Wallpaper and Paint Store in Osage. She married Dr. C.D. Rice on Feb. 18, 1951, at the Baptist Church in McIntire.

Gloria was a member of First Baptist Church and for many years attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church, both in Osage.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with the Rev. Steven M. Kellet and the Rev. Monte Follis officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Sunday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage.

Gloria is survived by a daughter, Debbie Farkas of Osage and her children, Rachel (Adam) Garms of Iowa City and Amy Farkas of Denver, Colo.; a son, David (Linda) Rice of Osage and their children, Katie Rice of Osage and Jason Rice of Plymouth; and two nephews, Gene and Stu Parr.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dr. C.D. Rice in 2001; and two brothers, Charles Parr and Douglas Parr.

Mary Ellen Groh

THORNTON - Mary Ellen Groh, of Thornton, passed away Thursday (Jan. 24, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City at the age of 82.

Mary Ellen, the daughter of John and Freda (Wagner) Plonsky, was born May 22, 1925, at home in Mason City. She graduated from St. Joseph's Catholic High School in Mason City.

She met her true love, Victor Groh, at the skating rink in the old Armory in Mason City and they celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary on Aug. 6, 2007.

In 1950 she and Victor purchased the Thornton Enterprise newspaper. At a later date they also purchased the Rockwell Tribune and at that time both papers were renamed The Southern County News. Vic and Mary Ellen ran the Southern County News until it was sold in 1979, at which time they continued in commercial printing as The Printing Office until 1997.

Mary Ellen devoted her life to her husband, eight children, 12 foster children and her grandchildren. Her door and kitchen were always open, welcoming her grandchildren and neighborhood children to enjoy chocolate milk and pudding cups.

Mary Ellen will be sadly missed by her husband, Victor, of Thornton; daughters, Kristie (Mel) Pope of Middleton, Wis., Polly (Bob) Nordman of Savage, Minn., Amy Kuhlers of Waterloo; sons, Barry (Kim) Groh of Thornton, Steve (Nancy) Solum of Franklinton, N.C.; her 14 grandchildren, Christopher Green, Tom (Angelica) Green, Brian Pope, Brad (Maria) Pope, Michelle (Fred) Bartman, Derek (Susan) Nordman, Cory (Bethany) Nordman, Nicholas Nordman, Angela (Kyle) Fogt, Scott, Ashley and Randy Groh, Kody and Kasey Kuhlers; and her great-grandchildren, Grant and Reagan Pope, Ethan, Evan and Elizabeth Grace Nordman.

She is also survived by sister, Margaret Schmolke; and brothers, John and Robert Plonsky; sisters-in-law, Pauline Bull, Dorothy Larken, Delores Miller, Rosie Redman and Lorraine King; brother-in-law, Donald Groh; and many nieces and nephews.

Mary Ellen was preceded in death by children, Vickie, Randy and Lisa; her parents, Freda (Plonsky) Ong and John Plonsky; and sister, Imogene Berg.

Mary Ellen believed in helping others and generously donated her body to the University of Iowa Medical School.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell at 3 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 28.

Friends may also greet the family at the Sacred Heart Parish Center in Rockwell to help celebrate the life of Mary Ellen between the hours of 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. on Monday.

Robert L. Bailey

CHAPIN - Robert L. Bailey, 76, of Chapin, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2008) at the Sheffield Care Center.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Retz-Grarup Funeral Home, Sheffield, with Pastor Dwayne Henrichs presiding. Interment will be in the spring at Wayside Cemetery, Chapin.

His family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Robert L. Bailey was born on June 3, 1931, in Thayer, Iowa, son of Jesse Ross and Maymie Pear (Petershon) Bailey. Bob attended school at Thayer, Iowa. Robert was united in marriage with Delores Stiffler on July 23, 1950, in Osceola, Iowa. They made their home in Thayer and he worked for the CB&Q Railroad for several years.

In 1955, Bob and Delores moved to Chapin and he worked for several years at the Sheffield Brick and Tile and then the Mason City Stone Plant for nine years. In 1965 he started working for Greimann Brothers in Chapin and retired from there in 1997.

Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting and gardening. He also enjoyed stock car racing and for several years he had his own stock car and raced at Wright County Raceway in Belmond. Bob enjoyed working on cars and helped at Mike's Repair in his retirement until his health declined.

He is survived by his wife, Delores; two daughters: Marlene (Jerry) Harms, of Evansdale, and Marilyn (Lee) Uhlenhopp, of Marshalltown; son: James, of Chapin; two sisters: Phyllis (Donald) Clark, of Afton, and Ruby (Ronald) Cornelison, of Lorimor; two brothers: Gary (Connie) Bailey, of Winterset, and William (Marjorie) Bailey, of Enid, Okla; sister-in-law: Shirley Bailey, of Creston; six grandchildren: Jamie (Patrick) Hollaway; Jeremy (Sara) Harms; Jerret (Janet) Thompson; Robert Thompson and Haley and Sierra Bailey; five great- grandchildren: Johanna and Jaydon Thompson, Gunner Thompson, Bailey Hollaway and Jana Harms; and many nieces and nephews.

Bob is preceded in death by his parents; brother, Richard; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Leland Eckardt.

Burial will be in the Concordia Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Joice, with military graveside honors conducted by members of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post No. 6779 of Northwood, and members of the Edward Tosel American Legion Post No. 110 of Manly.

The family of James "Emerson" Evans has requested that memorial contributions be made to First Lutheran Church in Northwood, Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, rural Joice, or a charity of one's choice.

James Emerson Evans was born on August 30, 1919, at Mason City, the son of Martin and Maimie (Thompson) Evans. He was baptized at Bethany Lutheran Church in Joice, and reaffirmed the faith of his baptism through confirmation at the Beaver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Joice. He attended Joice Public School and graduated in 1938, and also attended Iowa State University at Ames.

Emerson enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1941, and served in the 190th Field Artillery for 44 months in World War II in the European Theater. Following his service to his country, he returned to Joice and was manager of the Saxerud Lumber Company for 10 years in Joice. In 1956, he was appointed Postmaster at Joice and served in that position for 34� years.

He was united in marriage to Sylvia Brunsvold on Sept. 19, 1948, at Concordia Lutheran Church at rural Joice.

Emerson was a longtime faithful member of Bethany Lutheran Church at Joice and was a member and also president of the church council for several years. He was active in town affairs, a member of the Joice City Council for six years, served on the Joice Fire Department, and was a member of the Worth County Historical Society.

Emerson enjoyed many sports, hunting, fishing, golfing, and especially baseball. He was a baseball player on the Joice town baseball team.

In 1994, Emerson and Sylvia moved to Northwood, and joined First Lutheran Church.

Emerson was a life member of Our Buddies VFW Memorial Post No. 6779 of Northwood, and the Edward Tosel American Legion Post No. 110 of Manly for 60 years.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years, Sylvia Evans of Northwood; sister-in-law, Ione Evans of Faribault, Minn.; nephews, Russell (Jane) Evans of Louisville, Colo., Mark (Michele) Evans of Faribault, Minn., and Douglas (Betty) Evans of Zimmerman, Minn., one great-nephew, Eric Christianson of Joice; as well as many extended family members and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and a sister: Homer, Carol, Russell, Ernest, Lynn, and Donald.

MASON CITY - Mildred E. Hoveland, 91, of 421 26th St. S.W., died Thursday evening (Jan. 24, 2008) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 29, at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave. in Mason City with the Rev. Emily Horrell officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Mildred Elizabeth Hoveland, the daughter of Herman and Minnie (Warner) Thiemann, was born on March 24, 1916, in Klemme. "Millie" or "Sue," as she was fondly known by many of her family and friends, graduated in 1934 from Klemme High School.

On Oct. 1, 1942, Mildred was united in marriage to Arnold Emil Hoveland in New London, Conn. Following Arnold's discharge from the service, the couple relocated to Mason City in 1943, where Mildred had since resided. They became the proud parents of two sons and two daughters.

Mildred was employed as a seamstress for 17 years at Mason City Tent & Awning. She was also active within her church and community as a devoted member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, the Miriam Circle, the Altar Guild and DAV Auxiliary.

Some of Millie's interests and hobbies included playing the piano, tending to her yard and flower gardens, playing cards, especially "500," quilting, knitting and crocheting. She was an avid golfer at many of the area courses. Millie's golfing "claim to fame" occurred in her early 80s on the Clear Lake Golf Course, when she shot a hole-in-one on Hole No. 1!

Millie was a very upbeat, hard-working and energetic woman who immensely enjoyed the music of Lawrence Welk and staying in close contact with her children and their families. She treasured the occasions of welcoming and hosting family and friends into her home, especially during the holidays.

Mildred will be dearly missed by her family and friends who have shared in her life.

She is survived by her three children, Richard "Rich" and Joan Hoveland of Waterloo, William "Bill" and Jan Hoveland of Sarona, Wis., and Susan "Sue" and Bob Hastings of Oro Valley, Ariz.; her son-in-law, Jack Finley of Homerglen, Ill.; her sister-in-law and lifelong friend, Lillian Thiemann of Clear Lake; her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, David Hoveland; Michael Hoveland; Amy and Rodrigo Ibanez and their children, Daniel and Jennifer; Michelle and Matt Waters and their children, Alex and Ellie; Cory Finley and Aaron Finley; numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

CLEAR LAKE - Reinhardt "Reiney" A. Andersen, 90, of 426 18th St. W. in Clear Lake, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2008) at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.

Reinhardt was born on May 2, 1917, the son of Ernest and Regina (Petersen) Andersen, in Clear Lake. Reiney graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1935. He attended North Iowa Area Community College and subsequently Coe College in Cedar Rapids. Reiney then returned to Clear Lake to work with his father in construction and completed flight school in Nebraska to become a pilot.

At the onset of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a pilot and a flight instructor where he was involved in the Pacific Theater. Reiney married Jane Ann Fisher on Dec. 29, 1943, in Ottumwa.

Following his discharge from the service, he returned to Clear Lake and continued working with his father. He later took over Andersen Construction Company and operated it with his brother (Stanley) until he retired at the age of 84. He was very instrumental in building many businesses and homes in Clear Lake and the surrounding areas.

Reiney helped with Boy Scout Troup 75 and taught Sunday School. He was a longstanding member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake V.F.W. and American Legion.

Reiney is survived by his wife, Jane, of Clear Lake; two children, Dr. Jon (Joyce) Andersen, of Olney, Ill.; and Amy Andersen, of Bloomington, Minn.; three grandchildren, Aaron Andersen and Ashley Andersen, of Olney, Ill.; and Alyssa Florey, of Bloomington, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Harry and Stanley Andersen; and infant grandson, Andrew Florey.

Aurelia Joan "Wegie" Eskildsen

CLEAR LAKE - Aurelia "Wegie" Joan Eskildsen, 85, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (Jan. 26, 2008) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 30, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Scott Wilson of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ, officiating.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the chapel.

The family of Wegie Eskildsen has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be directed to the family in her memory.

Wegie was born on July 27, 1922, in Faribault, Minn., the daughter of Edgar Genoa and Bessie Mae (Marshall) Fent. She attended and received her education in the Kensett school system, graduating from Kensett High School in 1940. Wegie worked most of her life in the retail and customer service for grocery stores and restaurants in the North Iowa area.

She was united in marriage to Ray Eskildsen on Oct. 24, 1958, in Albert Lea, Minn. In 1966, Wegie and her husband Ray owned and operated the River City Glass Company in Mason City, until they retired in 1988.

She enjoyed gardening, working in her yard, did artistic paintings, loved animals, and feeding the birds, but her great love and enjoyment was her family and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ in Clear Lake.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Ray Eskildsen of Clear Lake; her children, Reta (Darrell) Ulve of Kensett, Paula Gerdes, of Lake Geneva, Wis., Jay (Connie) Bjorgo of Ripley, Okla., Jeffrey Eskildsen of West Bend, Ind., Larry (Sue) Eskildsen of El Centro, Calif., Roger (Jennifer) Eskildsen, of Mason City, and David (Patti) Eskildsen, of Bullhead City, Ariz.; 17 grandchildren, Todd, Teri, Jason, Matt, Brandy, Heather, Eric, Dawna, Brandi, Brad, Brian, Jeremy, Ryan, Chad, Dawn, Shannon and Shane; 22 great-grandchildren; and many extended family members and friends.

Mildred Elizabeth Hoveland, the daughter of Herman and Minnie (Warner) Thiemann, was born on March 24, 1916, in Klemme. "Millie" or "Sue," as she was fondly known by many of her family and friends, graduated in 1934 from Klemme High School.

On Oct. 1, 1942, Mildred was united in marriage to Arnold Emil Hoveland in New London, Conn. Following Arnold's discharge from the service, the couple relocated to Mason City in 1943, where Mildred had since resided. They became the proud parents of two sons and two daughters.

Mildred was employed as a seamstress for 17 years at Mason City Tent & Awning. She was also active within her church and community as a devoted member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, the Miriam Circle, the Altar Guild and DAV Auxiliary.

Some of Millie's interests and hobbies included playing the piano, tending to her yard and flower gardens, playing cards, especially "500," quilting, knitting and crocheting. Everett William Jurgemeyer was born on March 5, 1926, in rural Garner, the son of William and Anna (Sandersfeld) Jurgemeyer. He was the youngest of four children. Everett was baptized as an infant and confirmed as a youth at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garner. At the time of his death, he was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Ventura.

Everett served his country in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947.

On May 18, 1948, he married Marjorie Hartbeck. He farmed in the Garner area until 1958 when they moved to a farm in the Rockwell area. In 1983, they moved to Mason City and Everett continued farming with his son until his retirement.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marjorie, of Mason City and their five children, Kathryn Berrill, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Karen (Paul) Schultz, of White Bear Lake, Minn., William (Karon) Jurgemeyer, of Rockwell, Barbara (Lowell) Heintz, of North St. Paul, Minn., and Jacqueline Thomson, of Menomonee Falls, Wis.; 13 grandchildren: Mark and Eric Berrill, Jason and Stephen Schultz, Thomas, Jodi and Brittany Jurgemeyer, Andrew, Samuel, Jessica and Joshua Heintz, and Kevin and Stephanie Thomson; sisters-in-law: Gladys Jurgemeyer, of Garner, Lucille Jurgemeyer, of Garner, Esther Seims, of Marshalltown, and Miriam Fritzmeier, of Muskegon, Mich. He is also survived by five nephews and two nieces.

David R. Kalvig

MASON CITY - David R. Kalvig, 78, of 1051 17th St. N.E., died Sunday (Jan. 27, 2008) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Rolling Acres Free Methodist Church, 604 23rd St. S.W., with Pastor Larry Day officiating. There will be no visitation. The body has been donated to Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery at a later date.

David was born on Sept. 21, 1929, in Ackley, the son of Vern and Anna Marie (Thiel) Kalvig. David married Betty Jane Lynch on June 12, 1948, in Mason City. He worked for Northwestern States Portland Cement Company for 30 years. He retired in 1979 as a maintenance lead man.

Following retirement, David had a flea market and scrap iron business that he considered more of a hobby than going to work. Some additional hobbies included hunting, fishing, ice fishing, and spending summers at the cabin in Red Wing, Minn.

He gave of himself helping friends and neighbors and volunteering his time in helping keep East Park clean. His final gift was his decision to donate his body to science so that others could learn and be helped.

David is survived by his wife, Betty Jane Kalvig, of Mason City; son, Joseph Kalvig (Vicki), of Nora Springs; grandchildren, Amy Johnson (Russ) of Osage, Erin Neeley (Brian) of St. Ansgar, Jody Hackbart (Jason) of Grafton, David Kalvig of Garner, John Corley (Darcy) of Polson, Mont., Camie Corley of Northwood and Stephanie Condit of Creedmoor, N.C.; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers, Donald Kalvig (Shirley) of Northwood, Arthur Kalvig (Cathy) of Northwood and Carl Kalvig (Carolyn) of Northwood; sisters, Verna Weitzel (Gene) of Northwood and Dorothy Schoolcraft (Jim) of Hudson; brother-in-law, Gaylen Quam (Vivian) of Northwood; many nieces and nephews, special friends, Bud and Alice Heinold, of Mason City.

In 1980, he met Barbara Carlson; together, a son was born.

Gary enjoyed fishing, golfing, video games, and movies; he greatly enjoyed spending time with his grandmother Dena, helping her with her groceries, yard work, and flowers.

He is survived by his spouse of 28 years, Barbara Carlson, of Mason City; son Jesse Carlson, of Mason City; stepdaughter, Jolene Carlson, of Mason City; special friend Mark Gladwell, of Mason City; brother, Steve (Lori) Rollefson, of Forest City; sister, Barbara (Rick) Bitterman, of Algona, along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Irene M. Sorbo

Irene was born on Jan. 16, 1914, in Silver Lake Township, Worth County, the daughter of Hans Martin and Serena Ovidia (Thompson) Bendickson. She was baptized at Silver Lake Lutheran Church in March of 1914. She was confirmed at Silver Lake Lutheran Church in June of 1928.

Her family moved to Nunda Township, in Freeborn County, Minnesota, in 1927, then to Mansfield Township in 1929. She attended rural schools in both Worth County, Iowa, and Freeborn County, Minnesota.

On June 10, 1934, Irene was married to Clarence O. Sorbo in Northwood, at a former pastor's home instead of at Silver Lake Church so they could be married in the Norwegian language.

They farmed with his parents in Silver Lake Township until 1949 when they purchased the family farm. Clarence and Irene farmed and raised their family on the north shore of Silver Lake until they moved to Lake Mills in 2001. Irene entered Lake Mills Care Center on Dec. 11, 2007.

Joys of Irene's life were spending time with her family, working in her garden growing flowers and vegetables, gathering and sharing family history, and visiting with friends and neighbors. She was active in her church circle as long as she was able.

Barbara Jean Bahling

TITONKA - Barbara Jean (Hott) Bahling was born Aug. 28, 1920, in Algona, the only child of Obadiah and Olga Magnuson Hott. She died Monday (Jan. 28, 2008) at the Westview Care Center in Britt at the age of 87.

Barbara was raised in the rural Doan Church area and graduated from Burt High School in 1937. She attended Gates Business College in Waterloo and worked in the offices of Rath Packing Co. until her marriage.

On Nov. 28, 1940, Barbara was united in marriage to Gerald Bahling in the old United Methodist Church parsonage in Titonka. They farmed south of Titonka until their retirement in 1977, when they moved into town. Each year they looked forward to wintering in Mercedes, Texas.

A lifetime member of the Doan United Methodist Church, Barbara was also a 70-year member of Eastern Star. She loved to cook, sew and play bridge and belonged to numerous card clubs both at home and in Texas.

Barbara was a devoted wife and mother of six children, Frances (Gary) Ommen, of Clear Lake; Janet (Kent) Brown, of Hampton; Mary (Royce) Gray, of Burt; James (Shirley) Bahling, of Beggs, Okla.; Gary (fiancee, Laurie) Bahling, of Titonka; and Kristin (David) Jacobsen, of Dows.

She was a loving grandmother to Ed (Macaila) Eick, Aimee (Chris) Turney, Michael (Sharon) Brown, Layne (Cher) Brown, Curtis (Kim) Brown, Michelle (Brian) Garner, Angela (Brandon) Reed, Betsy (Mark) Barglof, Jesse Bahling, Hadley (Hillary) Bahling, Desty Bahling, Brock Bahling, Kandice Zwiefel and Jaclyn Zwiefel. Barbara was great-grandmother to Morgan and Garrett Eick, Cole Turney, Logan, Hunter, Lauren, Taylor and Curtis Brown, Emma and Madelyn Reed and Jacob Barglof.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald, in 1993; daughter, Janet, in 1994; grandson, Jeffrey Gray, in 1976; granddaughter, Kelli Zwiefel in 1986; and special cousin, Lucille Vogel, who was raised by Barbara's parents.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at the United Methodist Church with Pastor Robin L. Thomas officiating. Burial will be in the Buffalo Township Cemetery.

CLEAR LAKE - Keely S. Boss, 38, of 2400 South Shore Drive in Clear Lake, died Monday (Jan. 28, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Lorraine Branstad

FOREST CITY - Lorraine Branstad, 89, of Forest City, died Sunday (Jan. 27, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. today at Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, with Pastor Mark Decker of Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson officiating. Burial will be at Rose Hill Cemetery in Thompson.

Phyllis Lorraine Branstad was born on a farm north of Leland, on Dec. 7, 1918, the daughter of Philip and Lydia (Seikmeier) Branstad. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith and confirmed at Bethany Lutheran Church in Thompson.

Lorraine received her education in a rural school near her home, attending King No. 1 county school. She graduated from Thompson High School.

In 1945, she and her sister, Julia, went to California to work in civil service. After a year and a half, she returned to the Midwest and made her home in Waukegan, Ill., where she worked in the military pay department at the Great Lakes Naval Base there. She retired in 1973 after 28 years of service. She also ran a boarding house in Waukegan.

Lorraine loved music. She enjoyed dancing and singing in church choirs. She sang several times with the Billy Graham Choir. She enjoyed caring for her houseplants and gardening. She loved the outdoors and over the years treasured the company of several cats and dogs.

Lorraine moved to Forest City in 1995. Failing health forced her to enter the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City in May of 2007.

Lorraine is survived by her siblings, Paul Branstad, of Buffalo Center; Julia (Francis) Burnham, of Forest City; Clifford (Grace) Branstad, of Thompson; Donald (Verneil) Branstad, of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Glenn Branstad, of Bensonville, Ill.; and 11 nieces and nephews.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Doris Lehman.

Keely worked at the Half Moon in Clear Lake as a waitress. She loved spending time with her children, taking them shopping. She loved her cats, dogs and enjoyed drawing, reading and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Seattle Seahawks fan. She was a member of Clear Lake VFW Auxiliary.

Keely is survived by her husband, Dale Boss, of Clear Lake; four children, Scott and Rachel Church of Joice, Nicole Boss of Miller, and Ashley (Brandon) Robins of Nora Springs; grandson, Tanner Robins; her mother, Jill Scott of Clear Lake; her father, Joe Scott and his wife, Barb, of Clear Lake; brothers, Tony Scott and his wife, Cindi, of Mason City, and Stephen Scott of Seattle, Wash.; stepsister, Stacy Lester of Clear Lake, and stepbrother, Jason Scott of California; and several aunts and uncles.

Doris Ione Grundel

ST. ANSGAR - Doris Ione Grundel, 86, of St. Ansgar, died on Monday (Jan. 28, 2008) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage.

Doris was born on Nov. 23, 1921, near Floodwood, Minn., the daughter of Glenn Foy and Velma Ione (Garrett) Chapin. She was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist faith. She attended Plymouth High School in Plymouth, graduating in 1936, where she loved to play basketball.

Doris married George Grundel on Jan. 30, 1943, in Plymouth at the home of her parents. They farmed in the Nora Springs and Carpenter area, with Doris being an active part of the farming operation. She taught Sunday school for many years and was president of the Womens Group at the Otranto Community Church.

She enjoyed playing cards, Yatzee, dancing and was an excellent cook. Doris loved children which was reflected in the babysitting of grandchildren and neighborhood children.

She entered the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar in July 2007.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Kenneth Chapin and his wife, Pauline; brother-in-law, Roland Grundel and his wife, Pearl; and twin great-grandsons, Alex and Ryan Baardseth.

She is survived by her husband, George, of St. Ansgar; two sons, Dennis (Marjorie) Grundel of St. Ansgar, and Jerry (special friend Susan Tanner) Grundel of St. Ansgar; two grandchildren, Deborah Baardseth of Buffalo, Minn., and Robert Grundel of Brownsdale, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Ashton and Ellie Baardseth.

Betty A. Weiland, 81, of Dumont, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 29, 2008) at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

She was born Jan. 18, 1927, in rural Butler County, to Ray and Leola (Hutchinson) Hahn. Betty attended Bristow schools, where her and Paul always shared the lead roles together in the school plays, and graduated from the Bristow High School in 1944.

She married her high school sweetheart, Paul E. Weiland, on June 18, 1946, in Bristow. Betty and Paul spent their married life farming four miles north of Bristow on what is known as "Weilands Corner." This true farm couple were rarely seen without each other. She taught Sunday school for many years at the EUB Church in Bristow and was a choir member and very active in Ladies Aid.

Betty is survived by her husband, Paul Weiland of Dumont; son, Jerry and wife, Virginia Weiland, of Hiawatha; daughter, Jerilyn Miller of Forest City; granddaughter, Connie and husband, John Gogla, of Cedar Falls; granddaughter, Cher Nielsen and friend, Jim Aldrich, of Alexander; granddaughter, Shannon Miller of Alexander; eight great-grandchildren, John Jason, Eric and Meagan Gogla, Kendra, Zachary, Chance and Christian Nielsen and Cally Miller; sister, Maxine Chestnut of Clarksville; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson Mark Weiland; son-in-law, Virgil Miller; one sister, one brother and a infant brother.
