Viola (Spillett) Awe
MASON CITY — Viola (Spillett) Awe, 87, a resident of the IOOF Home in Mason City and formerly of 10912 250th St., Clear Lake, died Friday (Jan. 18, 2008) at the IOOF Home.
Viola (Spillett) Awe was born July 11, 1920, in Thompson, the first child born to William and Crystal (Ball) Spillett.
Viola was employed at Nicholas Turkey Farm and Risto Manufacturing, but her most important job was “being the glue that held the family together.” She spent most of her life helping to raise her nephews and nieces, Allen Awe of Rockwell, Terry Awe, Dawn Ferch and Elaine Tyler, all of Mason City, Debbie Piper of Decorah, and John Awe of Rockwell, by whom she is survived. Vi is also survived by a nephew, Ronnie Kavars of Dubuque. “Warden Vi,” as she was fondly called, worked hard to keep all the kids in line, both young and old. Eighteen great-nieces and nephews lives’ were also touched by Aunt Vi. Seventeen great-great-nephews and nieces will have to learn about Vi from the wonderful memories she has placed in the hearts of those who knew her.
When the family moved to “the farm” in the early 1970’s, it became the weekly meeting place for everyone and their extended families. No one was ever turned away from the farm. We are thankful that our family got to really know each other and grow together there.
Vi was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Darlene Schellsmidt and Lillian Hoffman; one brother, Chuck Spillett; a niece; a great-great nephew and niece.
After a private family viewing, cremation will take place.
Memorial services will take place at a later date with inurnment at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
Thoughts, condolences and stories may be e-mailed to the family on the www.fullertonfh.com Web site.
