Carolyn Eleanor Moore, the daughter of James and Josephine (Maeller) Moore, was born March 30, 1924, in Oelwein. She lived for a short time in Maynard before moving with her family to a farm near Oelwein. She was baptized April 20, 1924, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Hazelton.
Carolyn attended Stanley area schools and went on to graduate from high school.
On Dec. 1, 1945, Carolyn was united in marriage to Clarence E. Grummitt, following his return from military service, by the Rev. E.L. Cooney in Fayette County. Their union was blessed with two sons, James and Dennis, and three daughters, Rita, Diane and Mary.
Carolyn and her husband owned and operated a dairy farm at Arlington for 23 years. In addition to assisting her husband with the farming operations, Carolyn was a lifelong home maker, devoted wife and nurturing mother. She and Clarence strived very hard to instill the values of hard work, determination, perserverance and having a strong faith life in the lives of their children.
They made sure that the kids attended catechism at Strawberry Point on a weekly basis and would occasionally reward them with special treats of ice cream on the way home from religious activities and events. The couple also enjoyed following the many athletic and extra-curricular activities of their children when they were growing up.
After 23 years on the dairy farm they sold it and moved into Oelwein for a short time where Clarence worked as a plumber and Carolyn stayed home. During this time they worked on their hotel/motel management certifications and eventually moved to Clarion, where they owned and operated the Evans Kay Motel for eight years.
Following their retirement, the couple moved to Boone for seven years and became very active in the church there. They then moved to Ogden and resided there for seven years until Clarence passed away in December 2000.
Carolyn moved to Belmond in 2000 and had lived there since that time.
In addition to helping on the farm and working with her husband in the hotel/motel business, Carolyn had furthered her education in her 50s by taking insurance courses at Eagle Grove, and eventually obtaining a license to sell insurance in the state of Iowa.
Those who knew Carolyn will remember her as a gentle yet strong lady who was a very dedicated, determined, and disciplined person. She was a meticulous seamstress making many clothes for her children and did beautiful handicraft such as quilting. They will remember her wonderful gardens and the delicious bounties it produced such as her rhubarb.
Carolyn enjoyed restoring furniture, watching RFD programs on TV, and special times with family and friends. She had a lifelong love of music and was diligent in making sure that her daughters had the opportunity to learn to play the piano. She and Clarence enjoyed old time music and in earlier years looked forward to an evening of dancing the polka.
She enjoyed collecting dolls and the solitude of an evening playing solitaire. Carolyn and Clarence made various trips to see their children and looked forward to excursions to visit her sister in Valders, Wis.
She had also enjoyed her trip to visit Italy. She was always active in her faith life wherever she lived and in recent years was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and various quilting groups.
Carolyn is survived by her children, James Grummit and wife, Mary, of Big Spring, Texas, Dennis Grummitt and wife, Brenda, of Clarion, Rita Anderson and husband, Steve, of Clarion, Diane Sharry of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mary Swenson and husband, Dennis, of Poplar Bluff, Mo.; her siblings, Marion Stiefvater of Valders, Wis., Burton Moore of Hazelton, Beatrice Phillips and husband, Delbert, of Jesup, and Joseph Moore and wife, Annette, of Cedar Rapids; 13 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 Friday, Jan. 11, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church, 21 Third St. N.W. in Rockford, with the Rev. Kenneth Kent Officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery, Rockford.
Visitation will be held from 4 until 8 p.m. today at the church.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Sheila R. Tegtmeier Memorial Fund.
Sheila Tegtmeier was born on 28 September 1964 in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Cyrus and Darlene (Arndt) Berk. Sheila grew up on the family farm southwest of Rockford. She attended schools in Rockwell and Rockford and graduated from Rockford Senior High School in 1983. In all of her travels she attended many colleges across the US and in foreign countries.
On 28 December 1985, Sheila was united in marriage to Rory Tegtmeier at the
United Methodist Church in Rockford. To this union were born two sons. Rory and Sheila had recently celebrated 22 years of marriage.
For all of her life she was a farm girl at heart, loving animals and once aspired to become a veterinarian. She especially enjoyed raising pigs with her father as a young girl, mucking out the barn and loving on the baby pigs. Instead of becoming a farmer’s wife she became an Army spouse and traveled the world, faithfully supporting and following her husband through many tours and assignments around the world. Whenever duty called her husband, Sheila dutifully packed the families affects, bundled up the boys and followed Rory wherever the Army sent him. Sheila was the reason for his success. Sheila once made a pair of bets with her husband, saying that he would not only be promoted but that he would also be selected for a prestigious job. She knew him better than he did and she won both bets.
She was fond of boasting that she had moved 16 times and lived in three countries and 8 states and had visited twice as many. She always said her favorite countries were Scotland and Ireland.
Sheila enjoyed cross stitching, reading, collecting ceramic pigs, watching movies, taking her boys bowling and volunteering. Sheila was a loving and deeply caring mother to her own children, making sure they wanted for nothing while attending every sporting event and every function. She not only loved her own children but also was actively involved with helping special needs children. She always worked to help and care for special needs children wherever she lived. Sheila was actively involved with Special Olympics; handicapped job skills training and life skills. Wherever she was at she was drawn to the elementary schools where she would work as a Special Education Assistant Teacher or Aide.
Sheila was a member of the Methodist Church.
Sheila is survived by her husband of 22 years, Rory, of Ankeny; two beautiful boys, Rory II, of Ankeny and Zachary, of Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; her mother, Darlene Berk, of Mason City; and father, Cyrus Berk, of Rockford; sisters, Sandy and her husband, Ron Goranson, of Mason City, Sherry Berk, of Mason City, Susan and her husband, Bryan Dalton, of Martinsville, Ohio; brother, Mike Berk,of Mason City; mother and father-in-law, Sally and Myron Stadtlander, of Rockford; two sisters-in-law, Sylvia and her husband Paul Hendricks, of Ely, Minn.; Carla and her husband, Dave Preston, of Ankeny; two brothers-in-law, Dale and his wife, Jacque Tegtmeier, and Kevin and his wife, Marla Tegtmeier, of Des Moines; as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Her grandparents preceded Sheila in death.

Eleanor set a shining example for all of us to follow as a wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and as a giving, caring member of her church and community. Much of Eleanor’s life was devoted to thinking of others every minute, helping where needed in her church, always having a meal ready for visitors, taking time to “fix” hair weekly for several relatives and helping at the Sheffield Care Center every week. “I’m too busy” was not in her vocabulary. Family always came first, and some of her favorite time was spent in her kitchen and her large vegetable garden. Eleanor is truly her family’s inspiration and hero.
When you thought we weren’t looking, Eleanor, we looked … and we say thank you and we love you for all the things we saw when you thought we weren’t looking. Blessed are those who give without remembering and take without forgetting.
