Leslie Carl Kruse

HAMPTON — Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hampton, with the Rev. Karl Bollhagen and Vicar David Lingard officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

Leslie Carl Kruse, 86, of Hampton passed away Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2008) at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

He was born March 28, 1921, in Hampton, to Carl G. and Sophia (Schulz) Kruse. Leslie graduated from the Hampton Community High School. He married Gertrude Grunder on Feb. 25, 1951, in Wilton Junction. Leslie was a farmer and farmed in Mott Township all his life. He was proud of the fact that the family farm became a Century Farm in 1994.

Leslie was active in many groups and organizations. He was a lifelong member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, a member of the Men’s Club and served as Sunday School teacher and superintendent, and on the Board of Elders. He also served on the Chapin Elevator Board, was a 4-H leader and active in the Purebred Angus Association.

After Leslie retired from farming he enjoyed his time, continuing activities with family and friends, at church and at the Hampton Senior Center. Most recently he was a resident of the Hampton Health Care Center and made many friends while living there.

He enjoyed playing cards with his buddies and Friday afternoon bingo. The staff at the Hampton Health Care Center really made him feel like the special person he was.

Leslie is survived by his daughter Marlys and husband, John, Stefl of Runnells, daughter Rhonda and husband, Bruce, Nordin of Minneapolis, Minn.; son Paul and wife, Teresa, Kruse of Granger; brother, Clarence and wife, Ione, Kruse of Hampton; grandchildren, Tim and wife, Holly, Stefl, Kristen and husband, Nick, Boyd, Lisa Stefl and Mark Stefl, Addison Nordin, Ian Nordin and Harrison Kruse.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude, in 2007; his parents; sister, Velma Fehd; and infant brother.

Wilma Fisher

LIVERMORE — Wilma Fisher, 75, of Livermore died Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2008) at the Humboldt Care Center North.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Livermore, with the Rev. Henry Friedrich officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery in Livermore.

DES MOINES — Roberto Nicasio Lopez del Rosario, 64, died Saturday (Jan. 5, 2008) in Phoenix, Ariz.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Grace United Methodist Church, 37th and Cottage Grove, Des Moines.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 11, at the Grace United Methodist Church, 37th and Cottage Grove, Des Moines, with special music at 7 p.m.

Evelyn Smith

BRITT — Evelyn Smith, 83, of Rogers, Ark., formerly of Britt, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 8, 2008) at the Heritage Park Nursing Center in Rogers, Ark.

Funeral services for Evelyn Smith will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W., Britt, with Pastor Robert Dodge officiating. Burial will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to services Saturday at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel.

Evelyn Gloria Smith, the daughter of Frank J. and Pearl (Volding) Smith, was born on June 15, 1924, in Crystal Lake, Iowa. She attended the Crystal Lake Schools and graduated in 1942.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Calvin L. Smith on Aug. 26, 1944, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. The couple farmed the family farm until 1973, when they moved into Britt. Evelyn then worked in the Britt High School cafeteria for a number of years before retiring due to her health.

Evelyn was a member of the United Methodist Church in Britt and was active in Rebekah’s Lodge and the Women’s Group. Evelyn also enjoyed traveling and visiting with relatives and friends.

Evelyn is survived by her son, Arnold Smith and his wife, Paulette, of Rogers, Ark.; three grandchildren: Troy Smith of Rogers, Ark., Justin Smith and his wife, Trisha, of Plymouth, Minn., and Jolene Smith of Washington, Mo.; great-granddaughter Kaily Smith; two sisters: Mable McAndrews of Pennsylvania and Arline Blay of Oregon; along with other family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Calvin, on Aug. 27, 1984; three sisters: Betty Madsen, Ella Curley and Mildred Harley; four brothers: Luverne, Milton, Wilbur and Arlan “Smitty” Smith.

BUFFALO CENTER — Robert Bronleewe, 82, of Buffalo Center died Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center–North Iowa in Mason City.

FOREST CITY — Irene M. Barkema, 89, of Forest City died Thursday (Jan. 10, 2008) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Irene M. Barkema

FOREST CITY — Irene M. Barkema, 89, of Forest City, died Thursday (Jan. 10, 2008) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at Cataldo Funeral Chapel, 160 E. Fourth St. in Garner, with the Rev. Bruce Barber, Irene’s son-in-law, officiating. Burial will be at Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

Irene Marjorie Barkema, the daughter of Rollie and Thea (Thompson) Romp, was born June 15, 1918, at Ames. She spent her early life in Jewell and then moved to Garner where she graduated from Garner High School in 1936.

Irene married Harvey Barkema on Dec. 8, 1945, at the United Methodist Church in Garner after Harvey returned from service in World War II. They were engaged for four years while Harvey served his country in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater.

Harvey and Irene made their first home in Klemme where Harvey was employed by the Klemme Creamery for seven years. In 1953, Harvey and Irene moved to a farm east of Klemme where they began farming. In 1957, they moved to a farm west of Forest City where they farmed until 1981. After they left the farm, Irene enjoyed traveling with Harvey delivering motor homes for Winnebago Industries.

Irene was a mother to six children, Ronnie Roy born in 1946, who lived only one day, Lon Harvey born in 1948, Ned Hauko born in 1954, Tom Ray born in 1959, and Lisa Ann and Lori Ann, born in 1961. Irene loved her family and worked hard to care for them. She was a born teacher. She spent many hours playing school and reading with her children. Irene and Harvey believed in education and were proud of the accomplishments of their children and grandchildren.

Irene found great pleasure in playing the piano and singing hymns. She had a beautiful singing voice and a charming laugh. Irene also enjoyed many different craft activities, especially crocheting.

Irene attended Calvary Baptist Church in Forest City where she made many good friends.

Irene is survived by her husband, Harvey, of Forest City; five children, Lon (Jacque) Barkema of Mason City, Ned (Deb) Barkema of Franklin, Ohio, Tom Barkema of Forest City, Lisa (Bruce) Barber of Bedford, Texas and Lori Barkema of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Bill (Lila) Romp; and a sister-in law, Barb Romp.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, Ronnie Roy; a sister, Fern Pruyn; and three brothers, Marlin, Lee Roy and Tom Romp.

Robert Joseph DeSchepper Jr.

JASPER, Minn. — Robert Joseph DeSchepper Jr. was called home to the Lord on Thursday (Jan. 10, 2008) at the age of 78 years, six months and 13 days.

Bob was born to Robert Sr. and Edna (DeReu) DeSchepper on June 28, 1929, at the family farm east of Jasper, Minn. He grew to adulthood on the farm and attended country school.

On June 30, 1951, he was united in marriage to Betty Pearl Dickey in Pipestone, Minn. They farmed the family farm together until Bob’s passing. Bob and Betty were married over 56 years, their 50th wedding anniversary was celebrated in New London, Minn., with all the family members in attendance.

Bob loved the farm life, being happiest when working outdoors. His love of fishing has passed on to his children and grandchildren. He never passed up an opportunity to play cards or visit with friends over a cup of coffee.

Bob is survived by his wife, Betty DeSchepper, of Jasper, Minn.; four children, Susan (Boyd) Dahms of Rudd, Victoria (Craig) Oye of Valley Springs, S.D., William (Susan) DeSchepper of New London, Minn., Charles (Colette) DeSchepper of Jasper, Minn.; 10 grandchildren, Scot Dahms of Peru, Ind., Tamara (Jason) Kremin of Tyler, Minn., Joshua (Christina) Oye of Cottage Grove, Minn., Chad Oye and his fiancée, Brooke Mullaney, of Dresser, Wis., Sean, Alec, Eli and Grace DeSchepper of New London, Minn., Troy and Karli DeSchepper of Jasper, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Connor, Kaden and Jenna Kremin of Tyler, Minn.; and three sisters, Mavis (Gordon) Holt, Darlene (Donald) Houg and Patricia (Milton) Fritz, all of Jasper, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Robert; and a daughter, Julie.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper with interment in East Eden Cemetery, rural Jasper.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Jasper, Minn., with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Margaret Kathleen Ramker

MASON CITY — Margaret Kathleen Ramker, 81, of Mason City, died Thursday (Jan. 10, 2008) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Craig Steimel of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City officiating. Inurnment will be in the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Dougherty.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday and one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the chapel.

The family of Margaret Kathleen Ramker has requested that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa in her memory.

Margaret Kathleen Ramker was born on Feb. 19, 1926, in Dougherty, the daughter of Daniel and Margaret (Forrett) Mullin. She attended and received her education at St. Patrick’s Catholic School, graduating from St. Patrick’s Catholic High School in 1944.

She was united in marriage to Kenneth Ramker in 1948 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dougherty. After their marriage they owned and operated the Dougherty Bar for eight years before moving to Waverly where Kathleen worked for the Waverly Publishing Co. for 20 years until her retirement. After her retirement Kathleen continued to live in Waverly where she took care of her husband and mother. Kathleen moved to Mason City in 2001.

She enjoyed crocheting, music, crossword puzzles, Scrabble and other games, baking, making peanut brittle for Christmas, and was an avid reader.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City and former member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dougherty.

Left to cherish her memory are her nieces and nephew, Charlene Manwaring of Mason City, Donna Henry of Decorah, Linda Alden-Johnson and her husband, Jerry, of Marana, Ariz., Michael Alden and his wife, Penny, of Manly, Susan Pittman and her husband, Keith, of Waterloo, and Sonja Cadwell and her husband, Tim, of Hamilton, Mo., as well as many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Kenneth; one brother, Virgil (Bernadine) Mullin; one sister, Marie (Mike) Alden, and two great-nephews, Kevin Henry and Virgil Hansen.

Earl Louis Smith

HAMPTON — Earl Louis Smith, 74, of Hampton, died Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2008) at his home.

There will be no visitation or funeral services for Earl Louis Smith. Burial will be at the West Side Cemetery in Marble Rock.

Earl Louis Smith was born Oct. 19, 1933, near Marble Rock. Earl Louis Smith is the eldest son of George Clifford Smith and Henrietta Alice Fink-Smith of Marble Rock.

On May 19, 1953, he was united in marriage to Betty Mae Vorhes-Smith, the daughter of Doyle Edgar Vorhes and Lorraine Veonne Ackley-Vorhes-Ripley, at Greene. Out of this union they had four children.

Earl Louis Smith is survived by daughter, Shirley A. Smith; son, George C. Smith and family; son, Doyle E. Smith and family; and daughter, Brenda L. Jutting and family.

Earl Louis Smith is also survived by one brother, Harry (Mary) Smith and family of Waterloo; five sisters Alice (Marvin) Lamb and family of Charles City, Sharon (Richard) Frascht and family of Marble Rock, and Linda Nelson and family of Dougherty, and one sister-in-law, Donna Crooks and family of Charles City. Earl Louis Smith is survived by several other family members consisting of uncles, aunts, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Mae Vorhes-Smith; his beloved parents, George Clifford (G.C.) Smith and Henrietta Alice Fink-Smith; his beloved mother and father-in-law, Doyle Edgar Vorhes, Lorraine Veonne Ackley-Vorhes-Ripley, and stepfather-in-law, Max Ripley. Earl Louis Smith will surely be missed by both family and friends.

Donald Reisetter

FOREST CITY — Donald Reisetter, age 83, of Forest City, died Friday (Jan. 11, 2008) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Barb Spaulding officiating. Burial will be at Madison Township Cemetery in rural Forest City with graveside military rites conducted by the Forest City American Legion and the Leland VFW.

Visitation will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 14, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N Clark St., Forest City, and an hour prior to service at the church.

Don was born on Dec. 16, 1924, in Radcliffe, Iowa, the son of Archie and Percy (Bergeson) Reisetter. Don graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1942, attended Waldorf College and graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in advertising, and served two terms in the United States Navy.

On Feb. 28, 1953, he was united in marriage to Cleone Peterson. Don’s entire professional life was spent as the advertising manager at the Forest City Summit for nearly 40 years.

Don served within many organizations including the Forest City Jaycees, Forest City Parent Teacher Association, Winnebago County March of Dimes, a member of the Forest City Veterans of Foreign Wars, Forest City Chamber of Commerce, Forest City Frontier Days Committee, Waldorf College Alumni Association, Forest City Parks & Recreation, the Forest City Men’s Bowling Association. He was a member of the Forest City Barbershop Chorus, and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. Don was an avid golfer and bowler. He achieved two holes-in-one, and was inducted in the Forest City Bowling Hall of Fame in 2004. He loved to play cards, shoot pool and loved to sing, especially hymns. Don also loved baseball and was a lifetime fan of the St. Louis Cardinals.

Don will be remembered for his sense of humor, his competitive nature and was admired by many for his sheer determination and upbeat attitude. Don’s Christian faith was evident in his battle with Parkinson’s disease for over 20 years. Don enjoyed his years at the Good Samaritan Center and the Manly Care Center, and while a resident in Manly, wrote his autobiography.

Don is survived by his loving wife, Cleone, of Forest City; a daughter, Barbara Andrews, Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Douglas, and his wife, Mary, Forest City; three grandchildren, Marika and Jeremy Andrews, Sacramento, Calif.; and Melissa Reisetter, Forest City; three brothers, Eugene (Lois) Reisetter, Grinnell, Carrol (Thora) Reisetter, Ellsworth, and Howard (Naomi) Reisetter, Story City; two sisters, Phyllis Oakland, Story City, and Joyce Hughes, Des Moines; a sister-in-law, Elaine Thompson, West Union; and many nieces and nephews.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers-in-law, Henry Oakland, John V. Thompson and Duane Peterson; and a sister-in-law, Verna Peterson.

Esther Violet Basinger

MASON CITY — Esther Violet Basinger, 83, of 1646 Eighth St. S.W., died Friday (Jan. 11, 2008) at her home.

Memorial services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at St. James Lutheran Church, 1148 Fourth St. S.E., with Pastor Paul Nelson officiating. A private inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to St. James Lutheran Church.

Esther was born Jan. 12, 1924, in Madrid, Iowa, the daughter of Paul and Anna (Lokmer) Udrovic. She graduated from Madrid High School and attended the University of Iowa in Iowa City. She also attended Drake University in Des Moines, where she received her B.S. degree in elementary education. While at Drake University she was a member of Alpha Lambda Delta, National Honorary Sorority and was selected for inclusion into Kappa Delta Pi, an international honor society in education. On Aug. 20, 1947, she married Harold “Bud” Basinger in Madrid.

She was a secretary for the State University of Iowa athletic department and later taught in the elementary school at Tiffin, Iowa. Esther was on the staff for the Mason City Public Schools before retiring in 1985.

She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and Hope Circle. As a previous member of St. Paul Lutheran church, she served as president of the Lutheran Church Women, Sunday school teacher and Lutheran League sponsor. She held offices for the Washington School PTA and served as president of the Mason City Instrumental Parents.

She was a Brownie Girl Scout leader for five years, President of the American Legion Auxiliary and active in Women’s Club. Esther was a Democrat activist and was involved in many other community projects.

She enjoyed spending time with her grandsons and loved to attend their concerts and ballgames. Esther enjoyed their music and having political discussions with them.

Esther is survived by two daughters, Crystal Anne Bell and husband, Scott, of Mason City and Carol Anne Meyer and husband, John, of Mason City; five grandsons, Jason and wife, Ann, Eric and David Bell and Paul and Matthew Meyer; two sisters, Katherine Peterson of Harcourt, Iowa, and Josephine Schaumburg of Des Moines; brother-in-law, Bill Basinger and wife, Jean, of Des Moines.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1998; her parents; four brothers and one sister.

Gerald ‘Jerry’ Hanna

TULSA, Okla. — Gerald “Jerry” R., Hanna, 63, of 1929 E. 55th St., Tulsa, Okla., formerly of Forest City, passed away Thursday (Jan. 10, 2008) at St. John’s Medical Center, Tulsa, Okla.

A celebration of Jerry’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 246 S. Clark St. in Forest City, with the Rev. Wayne Hagen officiating.

Visitation will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Tuesday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Visitation will also be held one hour before the service at the church on Wednesday.

Memorial donations may be made to the Gerald Hanna Memorial Fund.

Jerry was born Aug. 22, 1944, in Forest City to Harold and Vivian (Dahlby) Hanna. He attended school in Buffalo Center and served in the United States Navy.

He owned and operated Hanna Construction in Forest City until moving to Tulsa in 1997. In Tulsa, he was employed as a housing inspector for the Creek Indian Nation.

He enjoyed celebrations with family and friends, time near the lake, country music, horses, home projects, bird watching and fishing. His family wrote, “Jerry’s incredible work ethic, playful disposition, and generosity were an inspiration to his family. He lived his life with sincerity and bravery.”

Jerry was married to Judith Berkland, the mother of Jennifer, Jeffery, Jason and Joni. She passed away in 1977. He was married to Margo Osborn (Heywood) on March 3, 1978, in Ventura, Iowa. He became stepfather to C.J., Julie and Jill.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Margo (Heywood) Hanna; children, Joni Miller and husband, Richard, of Forest City, Jeff Hanna and friend, Brenda Katz, of Clear Lake, Jill Kramer and husband, Mike, of Garner, Julie Bradshaw and husband, Jason, of Clear Lake, C.J. Osborn and wife, Pam, of Newton; 13 grandchildren; one sister, Janeane Flugum of Orange, Texas; three brothers, Steve Hanna and wife, Betty, of Crystal Lake, Vance Hanna of Harrison, Ark., and Keith Hanna and wife, Kendra, of Northfield, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his son and daughter, Jason and Jennifer; first wife, Judith; parents, Harold and Vivian, and stepfather, Art Cepeda; and granddaughter, Savannah Bradshaw.

HAMPTON — Earl Louis Smith, 74 years, of Hampton, died Wednesday (Jan. 9, 2008) at his home.

Earl Louis Smith was born Oct. 19, 1933, near Marble Rock. Earl Louis Smith is the eldest son of George Clifford Smith and Henrietta Alice Fink-Smith of Marble Rock. On May 19, 1953, he was united in marriage to Betty Mae Vorhes-Smith, the daughter of Doyle Edgar Vorhes and Lorraine Veonne Ackley-Vorhes-Ripley at Greene. From this union, four children were born.

Earl Louis Smith is survived by daughter, Shirley A. Smith; son, George C. Smith and family; son, Doyle E. Smith and family; and daughter, Brenda L. Jutting and family.

Earl Louis Smith is also survived by one brother, Harry (Mary) Smith and family of Waterloo; five sisters, Alice (Marvin) Lamb and family of Charles City, Sharon (Richard) Frascht and family of Marble Rock, Linda Nelson and family of Marion, Marie (Gary) Peer and family of Craig, Colo., Judy (Ted) Pitzenberger and family, of Dougherty; and one sister-in-law, Donna Crooks, and family of Charles City.

Earl Louis Smith is survived by several other family members consisting of uncles, aunts, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Betty Mae Vorhes-Smith; his beloved parents, George Clifford (G.C.) Smith and Henrietta Alice Fink-Smith; his beloved mother and father-in-law, Doyle Edgar Vorhes, Lorraine Veonne Ackley-Vorhes-Ripley; and step-father-in-law Max Ripley.

Earl Louis Smith will surely be missed by both family and friends.

Robert E. Pierce

VENICE, Fla. — Robert E. Pierce, 76, of Venice, Fla., formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Jan. 2, 2008) at home.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Jan. 9, at the First Christian Church, Venice, Fla. His body was cremated.

The Ewing Funeral Home, Venice, Fla., was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Pierce was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War. He and his beloved wife, Donna (Floy) moved to Venice in 1996 after owning Roberts Construction Co., Mason City, for 32 years. He was a lifelong member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Mason City.

Survivors include his wife, Donna, of 34 years; two sons, Robert and Roger; three daughters, Glenda Alberts, Faith Brown and Kim Ramsey; two stepsons, Michael Jeffery and Douglas Floy; a stepdaughter, Terri (Floy) Gardner, and a sister, Shirley Jenkins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel and Melvin Pierce, and a brother, Lee Pierce.

Mary H. Behr was born on Jan. 10, 1913, at Dougherty, a daughter of Edward and Margaret (Murphy) Donnelly. She was a 1931 graduate of St. Patrick’s High School, Dougherty.

 

She was united in marriage to LeRoy “Scoop” Behr on March 4, 1935, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Dougherty. To this union seven children were born. Mary and LeRoy farmed and raised their family in the Mason City, Swaledale and Rockwell areas.

 

Mary was a faithful and devoted wife and mother with an unconditional love for her family and faith. She was especially proud of her Irish heritage, Irish Catholic faith, and her Irish roots in the Dougherty area. Mary enjoyed visiting with her many friends. She will be remembered for her quick wit, sense of humor, and unfailing sense of devotion to her family

 

She was the oldest member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Guild at the church.

 

Mary is survived by her children, Dorothy DeVary, Rockwell, Rilla (Pete) Arnold, Mason City, Lee (Deb) Behr, Rockwell, Ron (Bev) Behr, Rockwell, Paul C. Behr, and friend, Suzanne McCarty, Denver, Colo., Dennis (Jane) Behr, Rockwell; daughter in-law, Sue Behr, Mason City; 34 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Therese (Chuck) Gagnon, Mason City.

Ruth Elizabeth Hillis, was born in Beatrice, Neb., on March 10, 1909, the daughter of Martin Lumas and Anna Laura (Smith) Wickwire. She was the only daughter of six children and relocated with her family to a farm near Cartersville in 1915, where she also attended rural schools. In 1929, Ruth moved to Mason City.

 

On May 9, 1933, in Allison, Iowa, Ruth was united in marriage to Roy John Hillis. The couple lived in the Rockwell and Sheffield areas throughout their adult lives. Following Roy’s death in January of 1984, Ruth moved to Mason City.

 

For numerous years, Ruth was employed as a waitress and was always known to be a hard worker. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker, who remained in close contact with her entire family and their interests. Ruth treasured each new adventure that she could share with her loved ones!

 

Some of Ruth’s leisure activities and interests included playing cards, reading, piecing jigsaw puzzles, cooking and baking.

 

She was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church in Mason City, the Senior Citizens and the R.S.V.P.

 

Ruth will be fondly cherished by her three children, Dorothy Kollman of Mason City, Anna (Steve) Anderson-Jicka of Nora Springs and John (Lorraine) Hillis of Grand Island, Neb.; her daughter-in-law, Alice Hillis of Duncombe and her two brothers, Lee “Babe” (Carrie) Wickwire and Gordon (June) Wickwire, all of Rockwell. She is also survived by her 13 grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and 14 step-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives and friends.

 

Preceding Ruth in death are her husband, Roy J. Hillis; her son, Glenn Hillis; her two grandsons, Tom and Dwane Hesley; two great-grandchildren; three sons-in-law and three brothers.

Marian Loretta, the daughter of Joseph and Ruth Richardson Larson, was born on Feb. 23, 1918, in Wright County near Belmond. She grew up in the Belmond area and graduated from Belmond High School in 1936.

 

Marian was united in marriage to Carlyle A. Didio on July 24, 1937. The couple made their home in Belmond where they farmed and raised their family. After raising her six children, Marian returned to school, where she received her bachelor’s of science degree in education from Drake University. Marian taught first grade in Belmond and Garner. Marian retired from teaching in 1984.

 

Carlyle passed away in 1979. In 1986, Marian married Frank Ernst of Palmer. The couple lived near Palmer until Frank’s death in 1996. Marian returned to Belmond where she lived until recently moving into the Meadows Assisted Living in Clarion.

 

Marian was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, where she was active in the Rosary Society and study clubs. Marian was a 60-year member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas. She enjoyed her many world travels. Marian was an avid card player and occupied her time with crossword puzzles and reading. She looked forward to the monthly birthday club gathering. Most important to Marian, though, was her family, for whom she was so very proud.

 

Marian is survived by three daughters: Sandra Stern and husband, Wayne of Rockford, Ill., Mary Ruth Prewitt of San Diego, Calif., Geraldine Daniels and husband, Louis, of Glendale, Ariz.; two sons: Dennis (Cuddy) and wife, Kim, of Clear Lake, Daniel of Belmond; ten grandchildren: Mark Stern and wife, Kathleen, Michael Stern, John Stern, Jason Stern and wife, Karice, Kelsey Prewitt, Erin Strong and husband Mike, Andrea Daniels, Natalyn Daniels, Diena Mennenga and husband Daren, Ryan Didio; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters: Doris Shear of Kanawha; Clarice Yarger of San Diego, Calif.; JoAnn Betten and husband, Kerny, of New Hampton; a brother, James Larson of Kanawha; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

 

She is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands; a son, Charles; brother, Lowell Larson and a daughter-in-law, Kathy Didio.

Shirley Grace Rodgers was born in Greene on March 11, 1924, the daughter of Pearl Helen (Flynn) and Fred Floyd Salsbury. She was the tenth of thirteen children born to her parents. She attended school in Greene.

 

Following high school, Grace moved to Vancouver, Wash., where she met her future husband, Leeward “Wayne” Rodgers. The couple was united in marriage on Oct. 11, 1944, in Vancouver, and relocated back to Iowa in 1945.

 

For over 22 years, Grace was employed at the Brick and Tile Building in Mason City as a janitress. She was a former Girl Scout leader and member of the VFW and American Legion Auxiliaries.

 

Grace was a fiercely independent and strong-willed woman who possessed a precise and unique style — all her own! She had a wonderful sense of humor and always held her husband, daughters and entire family as her highest priority.

 

Grace prided herself in her meticulous laundry abilities, enjoyed listening to music, watching movies, building dollhouses, going shopping and for afternoon rides and preparing for the holidays, especially Christmas. Grace was fond of small pets and her current companionship with her cat, “Norm,” and treasured being outdoors and tending to her flower gardens and roses.

 

Those cherishing Grace’s memory include her two daughters, Judith “Judy” Schultz and Janet “Jan” Rodgers, both of Mason City; her brother-in-law, Leroy Hummel of Stockton, Calif.; her three grandchildren, Kevin (Cyndi) Schultz, Terry (Julie) Schultz and Kimberly (George “Nick”) Harrison; her five great-grandchildren, Emma Schultz, Todd Schultz, Lea Schultz, Sara Schultz and Ava Harrison. Many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends also survive Grace.

 

Preceding Grace in death are her husband, Leeward “Wayne” Rodgers on Feb. 17, 2007; her parents, Pearl and Fred Salsbury; her son-in-law, James Schultz; her nine sisters, Ruth Bowman, Phyllis Miller, Dorothy Passmore, Eleanor Parr, Floy Hummel, Myrtle Ackley, Hazel Salsbury, Beth Salsbury and Carol Salsbury, and her three brothers, Ralph, Ray and Donald Salsbury.

Evelyn Lucille Tjarks, the daughter of Edd and Christena (Nieman) Luppen was born on July 3, 1925, near Kanawha. She attended country school near her home and graduated from Kanawha High School in 1943. After graduation, Evelyn attended the Iowa State Teacher’s College for one year. She then moved back to Kanawha and began working at the drug store until she was married.

 

Evelyn was united in marriage with James T. Tjarks on June 29, 1948, at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church. After they were married, the couple farmed on the family farm until 1993, when they moved into Britt.

 

Evelyn was a member of the Woden Christian Reformed Church, where she was very active in the Ladies Aid, helped as a Sunday School teacher and with the Calvinettes. She was also a 4-H leader and helped with Music Boosters when her children were in school.

 

Evelyn was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved spending time with family and friends especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Evelyn enjoyed quilting and sewing and had three main priorities in life … faith, family and farming.

 

Evelyn is survived by her children: Wayne (Jean) Tjarks of Holland, Mich., LaDonna (Wally) Mulder, of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, Joyce Tjarks of Wesley, and Marlin (Deanne) Tjarks of Wesley; grandchildren: Joel Tjarks, Karina (Brian) Schebor, Kenton (Nicole) Tjarks, Krista (Rob) Severn, Justin (Cheryl) Mulder, Ryan Mulder, Heidi Tjarks and Eva Tjarks; five great-grandchildren; brother Edward (Billie) Luppen, of Kanawha; sister, Marlene Brooks, of Britt; brother-in-law, Henry (Anna) Tjarks, of Britt; as well as many nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Jim, on July 25, 2006; sister Ardell (John) Kruger; and an infant sister.

Alma J. Pals, 84, of Alexander, passed away Sunday (Jan. 13, 2008) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell.

 

She was born on May 8, 1923, in Alexander, Iowa, to Louis and Dora (Larsen) Bell. Alma graduated from Alexander High School in Alexander, Iowa. She was married on Nov. 30, 1942, in Baltimore, Md., to Willie Pals.

 

She was a member of Alexander United Methodist Church in Alexander. She was also a member of the Kitchen Klatter Band, Alexander Cemetery Society and United Methodist Women.

 

Alma loved to read, embroidery, traveling and camping. She was a big Hawkeye fan, but one of her biggest joys in life was making chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren.

 

She is survived by her son, Don and wife, Nina Pals, of Mason City; daughter, Judy and husband, Gene Pastour, of Johnston; grandson, Troy and wife, Nichi Pals, of Alexander; grandson, Tony and wife, Tami Pals, of Mason City; grandson, Shane and wife, Kara Pastour, of Ankeny; and granddaughter, Angela Pastour, of West Des Moines; great-grandchildren, Tyler Pals, Cassidy Pals, Tory Pals, Cole Pals, and Mason Pals; sister, Inez Ginapp, of Belmond; sister, Dorothy Poland, of Rockwell; sister, LaVonne Card of Alexander.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother Eldon Bell; sister Erma Neal; great-grandchildren, Andrew, Elizabeth and Annah Pals.
