BELMOND - Russell "Russ" E. Dougherty, 85, of Belmond died Thursday (Aug. 14, 2008) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond with Father Nils Hernandez and Deacon Nick Schmit officiating. Burial will take place in the St. Francis Cemetery near Belmond. Graveside military rites will be conducted by the Belmond Honor Guard.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, at Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick's Lane S. in Belmond, with a rosary and scriptural wake service at 4 p.m.

There will not be any viewing at the church on Monday.

GARNER - Curtis Nelson, 72, of Garner, died Thursday (Aug. 14, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. David Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner.

Palmer, W. Roger  
 
HAMPTON - W. Roger Palmer, 71, of Hampton passed away Thursday (Aug. 14, 2008) at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton.

A celebration of Roger's life will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at the First Christian Church in Hampton with Pastor John Chapple officiating. Inurnment at the Hampton Cemetery in Hampton will be at a later date. Per his wishes he was cremated.

A gathering will be from 11 am until the time of services on Saturday, Aug. 23, at the First Christian Church in Hampton.

Roger was born in the family home on Sept. 25, 1936, the eighth child of Joseph and Ruth (Fox) Palmer of Hampton. After graduating from Hampton High School in 1956, he served two years in the Marine Corps. In August 1959, he married Sandra L. Eckhardt of Sheffield and had one son, Patrick, in 1964. They later divorced.

In October 1969 he married Norma L. Abbas of Hampton.

Roger enjoyed life and there was no doubt that he lived it to the fullest. Over the course of his life he worked as a baker, owned The Palmer House tavern, was employed at Weldin's Ready Mix as a truck driver and later as plant manager and most recently owned Palmer & Palmer Computer Supplies with his wife Norma.

Roger was an avid Yankee fan and enjoyed trips with his wife Norma and their basset hounds in their motor home called, "The Yankee Clipper." Over the years they had traveled to all of the lower 48 states and to parts of Canada.

Roger also was a servant of the community in which he lived. He served as a Hampton volunteer firefighter for 17 years, Hampton City councilman, mayor of Hampton and as a Franklin County supervisor. He enjoyed helping other people in those roles of public service and was many times called "The People's Mayor".

He represented the city of Hampton at the christening of the submarine U.S.S. Hampton in Newport News, Va., in 1993. Roger was also active in the Democratic Party on the county level and also at many state functions.

Roger also gave his time to many Hampton civic organizations. For many years Roger umpired Little League baseball, Babe Ruth baseball and girls high school softball games. He also served on the Franklin County Development Board, was a former member of the Hampton Kiwanis - receiving the Distinguished Service Award in 1993 and the Hixson Fellowship Award in 1997. He was a life member of the AmVets, American Legion and Franklin County Historical Society.

Roger was a former member of the United Methodist Church and a current member of the First Christian Church. His other interests included meeting with "the boys" in Bradford every morning for coffee and cards, collecting coins and guns, watching old westerns and of course watching and cheering for the New York Yankees.

Roger leaves behind a loving wife, Norma; one son, Patrick and his wife, Becky, of Hampton; three brothers, James Palmer and Jess Palmer of Washington and Chuck Palmer of California; and two faithful basset hounds, Muffin and Daisy.

His parents; two brothers, Tom and Frank; and two sisters, Ruth Carmen and LaRae Palmer, preceded him in death.

OSAGE - Bridget Elizabeth "Betty" Driscoll Start, 102, of Osage and formerly of LeRoy, Minn., died Thursday (Aug. 14, 2008) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in LeRoy, Minn.

Visitation is from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage.

Richard Clausen was born April 10, 1939, in Osage. After graduating from St. Ansgar High School in 1957, he married Marlene Jahl Emma Krumheuer in 1960.

They farmed near Stacyville from 1957 to 1978. He was active in his church, 4-H and Saddle Club for many years. His hobbies included horses, farming, watching sports, enjoying home-cooked meals, playing cards and spending time with his grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his mother Helga and father Clayton; his daughter, Renae; son, Todd; and brother, Allen.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene Clausen of Osage; son, Marlin (Renee') Clausen of Stacyville; a son, Mark (Tonya) Clausen of Rochester, Minn.; a daughter, Tricia Clausen; Shari (Brian) Mork of Osage; his sister, Linda (Gregory) Munson of Rochester, Minn.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

BELMOND - Russell E. Dougherty, 85, of Belmond, passed away Thursday (Aug. 14, 2008) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Russell Erwin, the son of Earl and Gertrude (DeNui) Dougherty, was born on Dec. 19, 1922, at Iowa Falls. The family moved to Clarion when Russ was five years old. He attended the Clarion schools, graduating in 1941.

Russ and Maxine (Martin) were married June 7, 1948, in Clarion. They eventually opened a jewelry store in Belmond, moving there in 1949.

Left to survive Russ is his wife of 60 years, Maxine; sons, Dennis (Joan), of Belmond, Ron (Diane), of Ankeny, Steve (Val) and Randy (Kris) both of Belmond; brother, Dale (Irene), of Clarion; sister, Gerene Smith of Eagle Grove; grandchildren, Mark (Tammy), Phil (Christine), Brad (Amanda), Eric (Jayme), Jennifer (Joel) Eddleman, Jill (Todd) Sears, Katie (Tim) Barkema, Sara (Nic) Sailsbury, Neil Dougherty, Jacki, Chelsey, and Shelby Dougherty; 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Loren; brother-in-law, Spencer; and infant grandson, Ryan.

MASON CITY - Richard Francis "Rick" Dunlavey, 44, of 221 Second St., N.W., Mason City, died at his home.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 2502 S. Jefferson Ave., Mason City, with the Rev. Emily Horrell officiating. Inurnment will be at a later time at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, St. Ansgar.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, Mason City, and one hour before the service on Tuesday at the church. Family suggests memorials to Richard F. Dunlavey Memorial Fund.

Rick was born March 26, 1964. in Des Moines.

He graduated from high school in Mason City. He worked for Perkins in Mason City during high school and continued to work for them for more than 20 years. He also worked at Wal-Mart since 2001. He was known as a very dedicated and loyal employee.

Rick loved the holidays, family gatherings, going out to eat and having his favorite meal of cheeseburger, fries and small Coke. He also enjoyed listening to music, playing video games, board games, collecting and going on trips with "Off The Beaten Path." He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Mason City.

Rick is survived by his father and stepmother, Frank and Phyllis Dunlavey, Mason City; his brother, Paul Dunlavey, Mason City; stepbrother, Daniel Klampe and his wife, Barbara, of Waseca, Minn.; three stepsisters, Sue Dahle, of Rochester, Minn., Tamera Penning and her husband, Matthew, of Iowa City, and Janis Abkes and her husband, Bruce, of Jonesborough, Tenn.; nieces and nephews, Collin Dunlavey, of Denver, Colo., David and Julia Dunlavey of Mason City and several cousins.

His mother, Lila Y. Dunlavey, preceded him in death.

GARNER - Curtis G. Nelson, 72, of Garner died Thursday (Aug, 14, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at the United Methodist Church in Garner with the Rev. David Wagner as officiant. Burial will be in Concord Township Cemetery in Garner with military rites by the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Cataldo Funeral Chapel in Garner and will continue one hour prior to services.

Curtis Gene Nelson, the son of Raymond and Alta Mae (Wellendorf) Nelson, was born April 29, 1936, on the home farm east of Garner. He attended school at Garner and then worked for Wayne Greiman. Curtis served his country in the U.S. Army in Korea.

On Dec. 16, 1961, he married Joann Louise Arndt in Albert Lea, Minn. They made their home in Garner until 1974, when they moved to the family farm east of town. Curtis farmed for several years and then drove as an independent truck driver for Stockbergers and later for Overnite Express Co. For the past few years he worked for Steve Prohaska on a seasonal basis. He enjoyed playing pool and cards and wintering in Arizona with Joann. He was a member of the Garner VFW Post.

Survivors include his wife, Joann, of Garner; his children, Kim (Lorie) Nelson of Garner, Traci (Michael) Klesel of Garner and Krystal (Chuck) Irelan of North Liberty; seven grandchildren, Travis, Trever and Taylor Nelson, Colter and Nathan Klesel, and Britany and Shaun Irelan; a sister, Darlene Lundberg of Forest City; a brother, Kermit (Shirley) Nelson of Lake Mills; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two nephews, his brother, Theodore Ray, who died in infancy; and a brother-in-law, Milo Lundberg.

MOLINE, Ill. - Alda Toye, 80, of Rock Island, died Wednesday (Aug. 13, 2008) at Trinity Medical Center West, Rock Island.

Memorial service will be 1 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 19, at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111 First St. A, Moline, with a visitation from noon until 1 p.m. Inurnment will be at National Cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials can be made to the VFW Velie Auxiliary.

Alda was born Nov. 27, 1927, in Mitchell County, the daughter of George and Ruth Herron Wilson. She married Adolph Toye on Feb. 8, 1947, in Osage. He preceded her in death on July 31, 1998.

Alda was employed at the Rock Island Arsenal. She was a member of the VFW Velie Auxiliary, Moline.

Alda enjoyed gardening and maintaining her yard, fishing and spending time with her grandchildren.

Alda is survived by her sons, Michael Toye of Moline and David Toye of Rock Island; grandchildren, Michele (John) Rudi, Lori (Scott) McAdams, Robert (Crystal) Toye and Abbey Toye; six great grandchildren; sisters, Dora Eastman of McIntire, Iowa and Joan (George) Edwards of Hot Spring Village, Ark.; brother, Robert Wilson of St. Ansgar, and Donald Wilson of Osage.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Terrence and Thomas Toye; a brother, Richard, and a sister, Shirley.

MASON CITY - Buenetta "Bea" Jane Sharpe, 92, died Wednesday (August 13, 2008) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at the First United Methodist Church, 119 South Georgia, in the Wayside Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Stiles officiating. Private family burial will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery, prior to the memorial service.
Family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Buenetta "Bea" Jane Angell was born on Jan. 7, 1916, in Delhi, Iowa, the daughter of Howard Lasalle and Verna Jane (Jakelin) Angell. She graduated from Washington High School, Cedar Rapids.
Bea was united in marriage to David W. Sharpe on April 12, 1936, in Nashua at the Little Brown Church and to this union three children were born. Bea and David made their home in Toledo, Iowa, later moving to Mason City in 1947. Bea worked at Younkers. She was head of the jewelry and handbag department. She worked at Sears in the catalog department for many years until her retirement.
Bea was a loyal and active member of the First United Methodist Church, long time member and golf enthusiast at the Highland Park Golf Course receiving various awards and trophies. She was a member of the University of Iowa I Club, Mason City Women's Club and District Chairman for Iowa Women's Golf Association for several years. Bea enjoyed the Senior Center, cruises and bus trips with her friends, making ceramic art pieces, and league bowling. She was a faithful Iowa Hawkeye fan attending games with her family. She was most proud of being a mother, grandma and great-grandma.
Bea is survived by her children, Sandy (Herb) Ohrt, Iowa City, Sue (Dave) Novotny, Raleigh, N.C.; eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; along with other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dave; and daughter, Sally Reel.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Carol Holstad, 89, formerly of Northwood, Iowa, died on Friday (Aug. 15, 2008) in Fort Collins, Colo.

MASON CITY - Gertrude Frances Knoll, 96, died Saturday (Aug. 16, 2008) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2008, at the Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church, 340 20th St. S.W. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jack Vanden Heuvel officiating. Burial will be in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. today, Tuesday, Aug. 19, 2008, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City, and continue one hour prior to the service on Wednesday at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church, Newman Catholic Elementary Library and Hospice of North Iowa.
Gertrude Frances Cooper was born in rural Wright County on April 24, 1912, the ninth child of thirteen to John and Johanna (Benninga) Cooper. She graduated from Kanawha High School in 1929. After high school, she worked various jobs for area farm families.
On March 30, 1933, she was united in marriage to Clayton "Bud" Knoll at the Lutheran Parsonage in Clear Lake. To this union two children were born: a daughter, Janice, and a son, Jerry.
Gertrude and Bud lived on the family farm in Kanawha and farmed until their retirement. They moved to Mason City in 1971, where Gertrude worked for several area restaurants including at King's Food Host making pies.
Her greatest love was spending time with her family and friends. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, trying new recipes, walking, traveling and taking bus trips. Gertrude and Bud enjoyed many years volunteering at the Newman Catholic Elementary cafeteria.
She was a member of the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, catechism and she was the secretary of the ladies aid. When she moved to Mason City, Gertrude and Bud were members of the Rolling Acres Christian Reformed Church, where they enjoyed participating in various activities and attending Bible studies.
She is survived by her children, Janice Sowers, of Cresco, and Jerry (Barb) Knoll, of Mason City; grandchildren, Kay (Larry) Core, of Springfield, Va., Brian Sowers, of Marshalltown, Ryan (Molly) Knoll, of Mason City, Angie (Todd) Gilbert, of Clear Lake, Arlene Wright, of Waterloo, DeeAnn (Rick) Sovereign, of Cresco; 13 great-grandchildren; along with nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Gertrude is preceded in death by her parents, John and Johanna Cooper; husband Bud of 74 years, on March 13, 2008; granddaughter, Sara Knoll; great-grandson, Dylan Sowers; son-in-law, Darrell Sowers; grandson-in-law, Bob Wright; eight brothers, four sisters, eight sisters-in-law, and three brothers-in-law.

CLEAR LAKE - Marcella A. Lee, 95, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (Aug. 17, 2008) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2008, at the Galilean Lutheran Church, Highway 18 W. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Jeff Ungs officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, and continue one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Galilean Lutheran Church.
Marcella was born on Jan. 26, 1913, in Fertile, the daughter of Andrew and Minnie (Purcell) Oswald. She was the ninth of eleven children. She attended school in Fertile, graduating in the Class of 1930.
Marcella was united in marriage to Selmer "Sam" Lee on June 30, 1932, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown. Together they resided in Hanlontown, Oskaloosa, Mason City and the last 50-plus years in Clear Lake.
Marcella was a charter member of Galilean Lutheran Church and participated in extensive volunteer ministry. Her greatest love was spending time with her grandchildren. Marcella enjoyed fishing; she caught many big ones through the years and had lots of pictures to prove it!
Marcella is survived by son Jon (Mary) Lee, of Clear Lake; daughter, Joan Dodge of Gilbert Ariz.; grandchildren, Jay (Lori) Dodge, of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Jack (Patricia) Dodge, of Mitchell, S.D.; Jan Dodge, of Gilbert, Ariz.; Jerry Dodge, of Lakeville, Minn.; Allison (Don) Hiscocks, of Britt; Ben (Sarah) Frederick, of Clear Lake; Zach Frederick, of Clear Lake; great-grandchildren, Andy, Aizik, Jackson, Jordan, Ryan and Nathan; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers, Albion "Doc" Oswald, Leo Oswald, Rollie Oswald, and Norman "Bud" Oswald; sisters, Idona Nelson, Avilla Kaplan, Claire DeVine, Veronica Johnson, Ella Mae Oswald, and Mary Ellen Oswald; son-in-law, John Dodge; and two great-grandchildren, Emma and Charlie Hiscocks.

MASON CITY - Lisa Marie Navin, 43, of Mason City, died Saturday (Aug. 16, 2008) at her home.
A memorial service for Lisa will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, 2006, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Mason City, with Charlene Albright officiating. Inurnment will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery, Highway 18 W., Mason City. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the chapel.
Lisa Marie Navin was born on April 4, 1965, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Bessie Coop. She attended school in Sioux City.
Lisa enjoyed crocheting, animals, decorating, cooking, cleaning her home, watching detective and crime shows on TV, and she loved to help others out.
Survivors include her children, Thomas Anderson of Sioux City, Desiree Navin of Sioux City, Shawn Navin of Anamosa, Matthew Albright of Mason City, and Tony Navin of Clear Lake; her life partner, Ken Stroebel of Mason City, her grandchildren, siblings, other extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by a grandchild.
