Lawrence H. (Larry) Larson
BELMOND — Lawrence H. (Larry) Larson, of Belmond and formerly of Rockwell City and Thornton, was called to his Heavenly Home on Wednesday (Aug. 29, 2007) in Scottsdale, Ariz., where he had resided near his daughter Kathryn, for the final eight months of his very fulfilled life. Born March 16, 1918, in Lohrville, Iowa, to Vegor and Lillian (Voss) Larson. He was 89 years old.
He began working in the Rockwell City area where he met Lyda Barnes, a school teacher. Larry and Lyda were married June 30, 1940, in Sheffield. Four children were born to their union and survive them: Susan Nelson of Bloomington, Minn., Nancy Larson of Des Moines, Kathryn (Merlin) Wenzel of Phoenix, Ariz., and L. Joe (Kelly) Larson in Ankeny. He is also survived by his dear brother, Harold (Eldora) Larson of Pomeroy; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews, all of whom he loved and enjoyed teasing, and to whom his memory will probably always bring a smile.
In his early life as a laborer, Larry spent one year working for the REA, living in a tent, moving across the Plains States. He was proud of the fact that he had helped set the original electric poles in Wright County! He and Lyda began farming in 1945. They farmed near Rockwell City, Laurens and Thornton. In 1963, they quit farming and moved to Belmond. He retired in 1979 to care for his beloved wife, Lyda, until her death from Alzheimer’s Disease. She has been awaiting his Heavenly arrival since 9-9-91.
His accomplishments were many. Larry served on the Belmond City Council for over five years, and served as mayor of Belmond from 1977 until 1996. He was a charter member of the Belmond Ambulance Service and served his community in that capacity for 23 years. He was named Outstanding Citizen of the Year by the Jaycees in 1997. In 1998, he received the Iowa Volunteer Hall of Fame award, the first Wright County recipient of that award, presented to him by then-Gov. Terry Branstad. He will be remembered by those who knew him because of his servant’s heart, always willing to help others.
Larry’s children will honor his life in a memorial service at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond. The family will receive visitors at the church from 9 to 10 a.m. Private graveside services will be held.
Memorials are preferred to Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org), a cause dear to both Larry and Lyda, or to a charity of your choice.

Adam Joseph Raney
ALGONA — Adam Joseph Raney, 23 of Algona, was granted his angel wings on Sept. 7, 2007, following a courageous battle with cancer. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Adam touched throughout his short, yet very memorable life.
Adam graduated from Bishop Garrigan High School in 2002 where he played various instruments in band and excelled in art. He also attended La James College in Fort Dodge; although he was unable to finish college due to illness, he cherished the time he had making new friends and enjoying his independence. Adam spent much of his time designing his tattoos, playing pool and cards with friends, spoiling his dogs and cats and valued his family and friends.
While Adam’s illness made him appear frail, he possessed strength, perseverance and an ability to overcome incredible odds and challenges. He enjoyed music, watching movies, sleeping late and loved the color orange. His beautiful smile always made you know that things would be okay. Although we will miss him everyday, he will forever remain in our hearts.
Adam is survived by his loving parents, Howard and Marlene (Golwitzer) Raney, of Algona; brother, Jason Raney and his wife, Heather, and their children Jacob and Jenna of Fairmont, Minn.; brother, Daniel Raney and his wife, Amber, of Blairstown; sister, Diana Moore and her husband, Brian, and their children Nathaniel and Olivia, of Wesley; grandmothers, Theresa Golwitzer and Dorothy Raney, both of Algona.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers John Golwitzer; and Willis (Howard) Raney.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Cecelia’s Catholic Church in Algona with Father Paul Eisele officiating.
The Wilson-Lentz Funeral Home of Algona was in charge of arrangements.

Lydia also looked forward to being the support crew to Harold, her grandsons, and others who they farmed along side. She was always sharing her wonderful culinary and baking talents with them by providing them with home cooked meals and bringing nourishment to the fields.
Lydia relished the opportunity to entertain family and friends and anyone who would stop in for a visit, or gather for a family celebration. They would be invited to cup of coffee and share a slice of homemade pie, cookies, a delicious dessert, or a mouth watering meal made with her loving hands.
Lydia was always up for a good conversation and loved to share a story with her many friends and family. Lydia was always one to be sure the needs of others were placed before her own.
In addition to working the farming operations with her husband, Lydia had worked for many years as a regional district manager for World Book Encyclopedia. She had also worked for periods of time at Chub’s Drive-In, Clarion and at the A&W in Belmond.
Lydia had been active in the community as well, serving for a time as a 4-H Judge, on the 4-H County Committee, and as a member of the Wright County Rural Women’s Chorus.
Her church life was very important through her life’s journey. In earlier years she was active at the Reformed Church in Alexander. She was a past member of the United Methodist Church of Clarion and currently was a longtime member of the Belmond United Methodist Church. Lydia had been active in the United Methodist Women and the Rebecca Circle.
Lydia always looked forward to her get together for a game of bridge, whether, with the ladies at Bridge Club, or a competitive game with her grandkids at the holidays or another occasion. Gardening, cooking, baking and canning were among her favorite passions.
She enjoyed all kinds of music and will be remembered by those who knew her well for her beautiful writings. She took great pride in writing her thoughts be it in a letter to a loved one or friend, or in her plans for a presentation at a lady’s group meeting. Lydia never met a stranger. She was a lady of great hospitality and shared her warm and welcoming personality with nearly everyone. Many will reflect upon Lydia’s trait of introducing herself as, “my name is Lydia Baker, will you be my friend?!” Her family will miss her beautiful smile, warm and caring attitude, and the unending love of “mom” and “grandma.”
Her memory will be cherished fondly in the life of her daughter, Cynthia Kay Mayo and husband, Phil, of Belmond; her grandsons, Philip George (Jody) Mayo Jr. and wife, Lisa, and John Percy Mayo and wife, Michelle, and Eric Thomas Mayo and wife, Christine, all of Belmond; her great-grandchildren, Nicole Marie Mayo, Andrew Taylor Mayo, Corbin Andrew Mayo, Gregory Eugene Collins, Ashlyn Rose Mayo, and Victoria Ravin Mayo; a brother, Harry Ostendorf, of Oshkosh, Wis.; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband J. Harold Baker, March 24, 2006; her sisters, Clara Klehm and Jeanette Olinger; and her brothers, Frank Ostendorf and John Ostendorf.
