Leonard W. Woodwick
RAKE — Leonard W. Woodwick, 82, of Rake died Saturday (Sept. 1, 2007) at St. Luke’s Lutheran Home in Blue Earth, Minn.
The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at
Zion
Lutheran
Church in Rake, with Pastor Karl Rydholm officiating. Burial will be at
West
Cemetery with Military Honors given by the Rake Color Guard.
Visitation will be today from 5 to 7 p.m. at Winter Funeral Home, 414 First St. N.W., Buffalo Center, and one hour before the service at the church.
Leonard Warren Woodwick was born on Sept. 1, 1925, in rural Rake, the son of Henry Woodwick Sr. and Josephine Chilson. Leonard grew up in the Rake area and attended country school until the eighth grade.
He helped his father farm until he entered the U.S. Army in 1945 and was stationed in
Kellogg,
Mich. When he returned from the service, Leonard began farming again with his father and worked various construction jobs building grain elevators.
On Sept. 7, 1959, he married Gladys Geerdes. To this union three daughters were born, Joyce, Connie and Sandra.
Leonard started working at the Rake Farmer’s Co-op Elevator delivering feed. He later was promoted to manager of the Rake Feed Mill. He worked there until his retirement in 1990. He was very proud of his accomplishments there, receiving many awards for breaking sales records. Leonard was a dedicated employee for 40 years.
He loved visiting with all his customers and even when Alzheimer’s took so many of his memories. He still knew his daughters, all of his grandchildren and always wanted to visit about the people of Rake.
Some of his family’s fondest memories were visiting Dad at the feed mill, playing on the feedbags and riding to the top of the elevator when Dad would be drying corn.
In 1990, Leonard retired and moved to
Spirit
Lake. He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, Cardinal and Hawkeye games and family gatherings. Leonard entered St. Luke’s Lutheran Home, Blue Earth, in 2005. He departed from this life on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2007, on his 82nd birthday.
Leonard is survived by his three daughters: Joyce Tweeten and her husband, Dennis, of Rake, Connie Clay and her husband, Dennis, of Blue Earth, and Sandra Woodwick of Blue Earth; six grandchildren: Jesse Clay of Mankato, Laura Clay of Mankato, Amy Clay of Blue Earth, Jaclyn Bromeland of Mankato, Elias Bromeland of Elmore and Benjamin Bromeland of Rake; two great-grandchildren: Hannah Aasum and Levi James; a step-son, Greg Geerdes of Rake; brother, Henry Woodwick of Rake; three sisters-in-law: Bessie Woodwick of Algona, Dorothy Jones of Lake Crystal, and Velma Gerdes of Woden; a brother-in-law, Dwayne Geerdes of Rake; and by many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Gladys; three brothers: LaWayne, James and Willis; sisters-in-law, Bonna Woodwick, Dorothy Geerdes and Arlet Christianson; a brother-in-law, William Gerdes; a niece, Diane Knudtson; and a nephew, Dennis Woodwick.
Although it’s so hard to let you go Dad, it was harder seeing your struggles with the disease that took part of your mind, But right to the end it couldn’t take your great sense of humor or that special twinkle in your eyes when you could make someone laugh. We love you Dad and we will miss you terribly!
