Myrtle Sylvester

CHARLES CITY — Myrtle Sylvester, 86, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich., formerly of Charles City, died Sunday (June 10, 2007) at Saint John’s Hospital in Detroit, Mich.

Funeral services for Myrtle Sylvester will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

For virtually all of her adult life, children were the primary focus and concern of Myrtle A. Sylvester.

Whether they were her own children, her children’s children or the children she instructed during a 30-year teaching career in northeast Iowa, her driving motivation was always the same — to guide them to a better life through education.

Even after her retirement from the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock community schools in 1985, Mrs. Sylvester remained active for more than three years as the parish education associate at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Charles City.

It was only with the onset of Alzheimer’s disease in the mid-1990s that she finally relinquished all formal teaching responsibilities, but she still spent happy hours with her grandchildren and, eventually great-grandchildren, frequently with a storybook or an encyclopedia in her hands.

Born Myrtle Agnes Heusman on July 19, 1920, in Floyd County, she was the second of three children of Arthur and Mathilda Troge Heusman. She attended rural elementary schools, graduated from Charles City High School and — after putting her own two children through college — earned her bachelor’s degree from Wartburg College.

Myrtle began her teaching career directly out of high school, teaching country schools in Cedar, St. Charles and Pleasant Grove townships in Floyd County. She was married to Donald E. Sylvester on Jan. 19, 1942, and the couple raised their two children — Curtis and Suzanne — on the 187-acre family farm nine miles southwest of Charles City.

Mrs. Sylvester returned to teaching in the 1950s and eventually spent 22 years teaching the sixth grade in the Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock school system. During that time she was also active as a Sunday school and Bible school teacher at St. John Lutheran in Charles City.

Although she was known for being strict and a disciplinarian, she was popular with her students as witnessed by the many graduation announcements, wedding invitations and birth announcements she received from former students years after they had left her classroom.

Mrs. Sylvester was a lifetime member of the National Education Association, an Altar Guild member and was active in establishing the St. John Lutheran Scholarship Fund. She resided in Charles City until 1997, when she moved to Michigan to be closer to her son.

Next to her family and teaching, the thing Mrs. Sylvester enjoyed most in life was sports. She was a longtime fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes (Mark Sindlinger in football, B.J. Armstrong in basketball and coach Hayden Fry), the Boston Red Sox (most notably Ted Williams) and most recently the Detroit Tigers.

Mrs. Sylvester is survived by her son, Curt Sylvester, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.; her daughter, Suzanne (Bill) Cattell, of Orlando, Fla.; her brother, Kenneth Heusman, of Monroe, Mich.; five grandchildren, Emily (Danny Burr) Cattell, Andrew Cattell, of Atlanta, Rebecca (Chris) Tull, Amy (Brian) Hayes and Dan Sylvester; eight great-grandchildren, Allison, Nicholas and Natalie Hayes, Kayla and Sophia Sylvester, Anna and Lucy Tull and Weston Cattell Burr; and three nephews, Kenneth (Gail) Heusman, Richard (Helen) Heusman and Jerry (Mary) Pesartic.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Cora Pesartic; a brother, Charles Heusman; and a niece, Janice Pesartic.

Memorials may be directed to the St. John Scholarship Fund, 200 S. Main, Charles City, IA 50616.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 15, at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Edward Bard officiating. A private inurnment service will be held later in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.

Those wishing to extend memorials, may wish to direct them to the Roger W. Harris Memorial Fund. Thoughts, condolences and stories may be e-mailed to the family on the www.fullertonfh.com Web site.

Roger West Harris was born to Daniel and Alma L. (Ferguson) Harris on June 23, 1922, in Rowan, the youngest of three sons. For many years, Bud lived on the farm, where he favored the wide-open spaces and fresh air, thus becoming a hard-working, ethical, “meat, potatoes and bread man!” He loved topping off a good meal with some type of dessert!

On Aug. 15, 1943, Bud was united in marriage to “his special jewel,” Pearl Jeannette Mondahl, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Their union was later blessed with the births of a daughter, Diann, and a son, Larry. Bud and Pearl delighted in dining out, fishing and traveling together, claiming they had visited nearly all of the states in the United States.

Bud’s greatest pride and priority was his family! He was devoted to the partnership of responsibilities of the home with his wife and held a contentment and philosophy that a family that works together and plays together, remains happy together!

Bud was employed for numerous years, as a tank wagon driver for Land O’ Lakes, Inc., Midland Oil branch in Mason City.

Bud was a gentle and kind man who was known for his infectious smile and the twinkle in his eyes! He never had an ill word about anyone and treated and respected all people as equals. Bud was always excited to learn the latest details of his children’s travels and lives and delighted in visiting with anyone. Every morning, Bud joined his friends at Pro’s for coffee and an early day visit.

Some of Bud’s other interests included going for rides to check out the scenery, especially, farms and crops (from his earlier years, his heart never left the farm), occasionally trying his luck at games of chance, and soothing his fascination and curiosity of studying objects to figure out “just how they work!” Some of the smallest inventions, intrigued him. Recently, Bud and Larry bought a fishing boat together and last week they traveled to the Mille Lacs, Minn., area for a fishing trip, returning just a few days ago.

Those left to cherish Bud’s memory include his daughter, Diann and Jim Moreland of Omaha, Neb.; his son, Larry Harris, of Mason City; his granddaughter, Samantha Harris, of Mason City; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Bernice “Beets” and Jim Trizulny of Mason City, Arlene Johnson of Manly, Norman and Milly Mondahl of Harrison, Ark. and Jerry and Vel Mondahl of Mason City. He will also be sadly missed by numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Bud in death are his wife, Pearl J. Harris, on May 17, 2005; his parents, Daniel and Alma Harris; his two brothers, Delmar and Delos Harris; and his two brothers-in-law, Dean Johnson and Gilman Mondahl.

Linda K. Acker

MASON CITY — Linda K. (Gossman) Acker, 61, of 1008 Delaware Ave., Mason City, bravely ended her brief battle with ovarian cancer at the University of Iowa Hospitals and went home to be with her Heavenly Father on June 12, 2007. Linda faced this challenge in her life like she did all others, with courage and dignity.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Agape Christian Family Church in Clear Lake with Pastor David Toyne officiating. Private inurnment will be at a later time in the Garden of Memories in Waterloo.

Visitaiton will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., in Clear Lake, and will continue one hour before the service on Saturday at the church.

The family suggests memorials to the Linda K. Acker Memorial Fund in care of the family at 2708 S. Lakeview Drive, Clear Lake, IA 50428.

The blessing began on Aug. 1, 1945, in Decorah, Iowa, where Linda Kay was the second-born daughter of Arland and Kathleen (Knox) Gossman. They moved to Evansdale, Iowa, where Linda spent the rest of her childhood growing up with her four sisters and three brothers in their humble surroundings at 910 East End Ave.

She graduated from Columbus High School in 1963 and moved to Milwaukee, Wis. She worked at Wisconsin Electric. She met and married James Acker and together they had three sons. They later divorced.

In the face of adversity, Linda moved back to Iowa with her three boys and made a home in Mason City as she started her new life as a single mother. She would begin to learn that independence suited her and this strong and loving mother would push forward to raise the beautiful sons who stand by her side today. Her amazing powerful steps have left an impact on them that will last forever.

You may have encountered her smile or her beautiful blue eyes if you frequented any of the Barlas establishments where she had worked for the past 23 years, most recently the Hanford. Many friendships have grown and been nurtured through those years and we know Linda will be remembered. New friendships were made when Fleet Farm opened in Mason City where Linda was employed as cashier from that day to the present.

Linda’s life was dedicated to her three sons and later to the arrival of her five precious grandchildren, Michiah, Alexis, Kailee, Camry and Nick. She loved spending time with them and they always put a smile on her face.

Linda was a giver. Her selflessness resonates throughout our lives and it is with honor and pride that we remember her.

Linda is survived by her sons, Chris, of Des Moines; Sean (Lorna), of Mason City; and Adam, of Mason City; three granddaughters, Alexis, Kailee and Camry, of Mason City; two grandsons, Michiah, of Oregon and Nick of Mason City; three sisters, Theresa Diane Gossman of Chicago, Dureen (Gary) Bradshaw of Clear Lake and Denise Gossman Hauptly of Des Moines; three brothers, Dennis Michael (Sherri) Gossman of Chicago, Mark (Amy) Gossman of Denver, Colo., and Jeff (Lana) Gossman, of Denver, Colo.; and nine nephews, three nieces, three grandnephews, six grandnieces and several aunts and uncles.

Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Arland and Kathleen Gossman; a sister, Jeanine Brasher; maternal and paternal grandparents; and a niece, Savanah Lynn Bradshaw.
