Minnie M. (Steenblock) Meyers
BELMOND — Minnie M. (Steenblock) Meyers, age 85, of Belmond, Iowa, died Thursday (May 31, 2007) at the Belmond Medical Center in Belmond, with her loving family at her side.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, June 4, at the Belmond United Methodist Church. The Rev. Michael Druhl will be officiating. Burial will be in the Belmond Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 until 7 p.m., today, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 1st St. S.E., Belmond, and continue one hour prior to the services at the church Monday. Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in honor of Minnie may wish to consider the American Diabetes Association, American Cancer Society, or direct them to Minnie’s family.
Minnie M. Steenblock, the daughter of Elso and Lena M. (Smidt) Steenblock, was born on Sept. 10, 1921 at Belmond. She attended Belmond Schools and graduated from Parker School.
In the early years of her life, Minnie took on the responsibilities of helping to raise her siblings. This role which began when she was a young lady became the center focus of her life’s journey as she always nurtured and cared for the needs of her family, her husband, and her children and grandchildren and their families.
Minnie was united in marriage to Harm “Bud” Meyers, on Jan. 23, 1945, at the Belmond Baptist Church parsonage. Their union was blessed with three daughters: Sharon, Darlene, and Joyce, and a son Garry.
Minnie was a homemaker throughout her entire life. She also worked at the Hill Motel as a housekeeper for 25 years. Minnie assisted Dr. A.M. Nelson in various roles, including the delivery of countless babies, and helping to bring many of her own relatives into the world.
Minnie was a devoted wife and mother who spared no energy in providing a loving home in which to raise her family. Minnie also cared for her parents as they declined in their health over the years. She was a meticulous housekeeper and a terrific cook. Her family reflects back on the delicious Sunday afternoon meals, her special cinnamon rolls, hot breads, homemade pies, and, of course, topping it all off with tea and fresh cream.
Minnie loved a wide variety of music, was a proficient yodeler, and she and “Bud” enjoyed dancing, especially if it meant an opportunity to include the polka and the two-step.
They enjoyed card parties with various couples around the area. Family members also remember various trips that were made to the Grotto in West Bend. Minnie cherished any opportunity to spend time with her family, whether it was on the holidays, a birthday celebration, or other event that brought the relatives together. She loved to be in the stands at any of her grandchildren’s sports, and other events cheering them on. Minnie even enjoyed following the high school girls softball team.
Following “Bud’s” passing in February of 1981, Minnie became active in various bowling leagues in town and had won several trophies over the years.
Minnie’s home was the root and foundation of her life. She took great pride in decorating it and filling the yard with beautiful flowers, and a large vegetable garden which produced a bountiful supply of mouth watering beets and other produce she canned for her family.
Minnie also found time to help the ladies of the church with funeral lunches and other activities when called upon. Minnie enjoyed the challenge of a crossword puzzle. She also enjoyed poetry, and the messages of greeting cards and visits from family and friends.
For the past four years during her time at the Belmond Health Care Center, she enjoyed many of the activities that took place, be it an afternoon sing-a-long, a competitve game of bingo, or a time of relaxation in front of “The Lawrence Welk Show.”
Those who knew her well will remember her busy hands, her fiesty personality, her big heart, and her devotion to her family. They will miss her presence in their own ways, be it a visit with mom, her hosting a family gathering, or having Grandma cheering from the bleachers.
Minnie is survived by her daughter, Sharon Schmalbeck, Belmond, son, Garry and wife, Lori Meyers, Stillwater, Minn., daughter, Darlene and husband, Neil Thomas, Dows, and daughter, Joyce and husband, Roger Brown, Ankeny; her grandchildren, Brian Schmalbeck and wife Kari, and their children Tatum and Maci; Molly, Matthew, Jake, and Megan Meyers; Janelle Holmgren, and her husband Tim, and their children Olivia, Mitchell, and Thomas; and Amelia, Aleksander, and Aleyna Brown; also many nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harm “Bud” in February 1981; her grandson, Jonathan Thomas; and granddaughter, Amanda Meyers; also her siblings, George, Peter, Lena, Ellsworth, Henry “Butch,” Paul, Ronald “Roach,” Arlena “Georgie,” Elso “Eddie,” Ruth, and half-sister, Kate.
