Shirley J. Koci

MANLY — On the morning of Feb. 23, 2007, Shirley J. Koci, at the age of 82 years, 11 months and eight days, left this world and went to her heavenly home.

The family will receive friends at visitation from 2 until 4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, at the Bride Colonial Chapel, 110 Spring St., Manly, Iowa.

A celebration of life and service of Christian burial shall be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 428 West Walnut St., Manly, Iowa, with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt officiating. Burial will be in the Plymouth Bohemian Cemetery, Plymouth, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be presented to organizations that were dear to Shirley, such as Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Manly, Hospice of North Iowa or the American Heart Association.

Shirley Jeanne Ciner was born on March 15, 1924, at the family home, located at 128 West North Street in Manly, to Charles and Edith (Seberson) Ciner. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Lutheran faith.

At a young age her family moved to a farm northeast of Manly where Shirley attended country school. When Shirley was of junior high age, her family moved to Kensett where she attended school, participating in band and basketball. Shirley was a graduating member of the Kensett High School Class of 1942. Shirley then attended Hamilton Business College until she secured a position at Iowa State Univeristy. She continued her employment at Beardshear Hall until her marriage.

On Sept. 19, 1944, at the old Lutheran church in Manly, Shirley married the love of her life, Lowell H. “Bud” Koci. While Bud was serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps, the newlyweds were stationed in Hastings, Neb., and San Diego, Calif. While in San Diego, Shirley worked at the Naval Depot.

During this time she wrote wonderful descriptive letters back home depicting a very different lifestyle as seen through the eyes of a young displaced Midwest bride.

Following her husband’s honorable discharge in September 1945, the young couple returned to their home community, the Manly area, where Shirley lived the rest of her life with the exception of ten years spent in Nora Springs.

Shirley was a quiet, unassuming lady who liked to read, listen to Lawrence Welk and travel.

She lived by the motto, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all.”

She gave of her time and talents by participating in Altar Guild and Star collating at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, teaching Bible school, leading Girl Scout troops, participating in various school organizations such as PTA and Music Mothers. She was a member of the Pioneer Town and Country Club and the American Legion Auxiliary . She also served on the Worth County Welfare Board for many years. She was also an excellent bridge player and enjoyed the company of others in the many bridge clubs she played in over the years.

Shirley’s true life calling was being a good wife and mother. She loved her family deeply. Her two daughters, Jeanie and Ann, could always count on their mother to be a constant pillar of never ending, unconditional love and support, as well as a source of much fun. Laughter, along with well-balanced meals, was served on a daily basis. Bedtime hugs and kisses and “Now I Lay Me Down To Sleep” prayers were a ritual. No mother could have been more devoted to her daughters and in return her daughters cherished her.

Shirley was a friend to all and especially accepting and kind to her sons-in-law. She found endless joy and delight in her five grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

Left to mourn her passing and to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Jean Marie and her husband, Roy Arends, of Alexander, and Ann Jeanette and her husband, Michael “Mick” Burkart of Cedar Rapids; her five grandchildren: Kelly Lynn and her husband, Joe Pratt, of Urbandale; Matthew Lowell Burkart of Houston, Texas; Jill Michelle Burkart and her husband, D. Hampton Finger, of Austin, Texas; Andrew Joseph Arends of Las Vegas, Nevada; and Johnathan Charles Arends and his wife, Kelle of Wichita, Kan.

Nicholas Lowell Pratt of Urbandale, and George Vincent Finger of Austin, Texas, are the beloved great grandsons.

Also surviving is one sister-in-law, Pearl Urbatsch of Forest City.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Lowell H. “Bud” Koci and her parents, Charles and Edith (Seberson) Ciner.
