Lynna F. Smith

BELMOND — Lynna F. Smith, age 90, of Belmond, Iowa, most recently a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center, Belmond, died peacefully in her sleep Friday (Feb. 9, 2007) at the Belmond Health Care Center.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 12, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Belmond. The Rev. Christopher Podaski will be officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery near Belmond.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E., Belmond, with a parish rosary at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the services Monday at the church.

Lynna’s family suggests that those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial in her name may wish to consider the Belmond-Klemme Elementary School Building Fund, St. Francis Catholic Church Building Fund, “St. Francis Forever,” or to a charity of their choice.

Lynna Frances Dominy, the daughter of Frank and Jessie (Lowenberg) Dominy, was born April 14, 1916, on her parents’ farm west of Goodell, Iowa, in Hancock County. Lynna was one of three daughters, including Marilyn and Donna, and one son, Phillip, to bless this marriage.

Lynna attended Goodell area schools and graduated from Goodell High School.

During her childhood and school years, she and her family were active members of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Goodell.

On May 29, 1937, Lynna, was united in marriage to Leo Smith, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. This union was blessed with a son, Lee, and a daughter, Sandy.

Following their marriage, the couple farmed in the Goodell and Belmond areas for a number of years. In addition to assisting Leo with the farming operations during their time on the farm, Lynna had been employed in various other occupations outside the home. She had spent periods of time working as a nurse’s aide at the Belmond Hospital and had worked in the offices of Dr. Misner and Dr. Classic veterinary firms for years.

Lynna was a devoted wife and mother throughout her life. Her family was first and foremost, as she worked very hard to provide them with the necessities of life and nurtured them with love and tenderness. One of her greatest joy’s of life was not in her own accomplishments, but in the successes in the lives of her family. She took great pride in their achievements and was always pleased when they furthered their education, which was something she believed in so strongly throughout her entire life’s journey.

Lynna had been a longtime member of the St. Francis Xavier Rosary Society and the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. A favorite past time was raising a large garden and sharing its bounty with her family.

As her family and friends reflect back on the memories of Lynna’s life, they will remember her great happiness in times spent in the company of her family and friends. They will cherish the times spent in her presence at the Christmas holidays, a season which she so dearly loved. They will relish the memories of the aromas and tastes that came from “Mom” and “Grandma’s” kitchen as she prepared many meals and delicious desserts, such as divinity and other specialities for them to enjoy. Lynna’s grandchildren always looked forward to homemade meals at her home, a favorite of all was her homemade beef and noodles, followed by her sugar cookies.

Those who knew her well will remember her for her strong faith and good sense of humor. They will remember Lynna, fondly, as a lady of quick wit and who had many favorite phrases.

Following a decline in health, Lynna, became a resident of the Belmond Health Care Center in April 2005. During her time there she enjoyed the many activities for the residents and visiting with her many friends, family, fellow residents, and the care center staff. She always looked forward to visits from her family.

Those left to cherish the legacy of her life include her son, Lee Smith, Grand Junction, Colo.; daughter, Sandy, and husband, Terry, Anderson, Belmond; sister, Marilyn and husband, Bob, Kral, Garner, Iowa; grandchildren, Mike Smith, Matt (Sheryl) Smith, Marc (Mary) Smith, Michelle (Fred) Collichio, Lance (Kathy) Chandler, and Lane (Sue Ann) Chandler; and 16 great-grandchildren; also nieces, Judy (Mike) Webb and Linda (Jason) Lohman; and nephews, Steve (Ronda) Kral and Tom (Deb) Kral.

Richard L. ‘Dick’ Finders

KLEMME — Richard L. “Dick” Finders, age 77, a resident of Klemme, most recently of the Westview Care Center, Britt, died Friday (Feb. 9, 2007) at the Westview Care Center in Britt.

Funeral services will be held at 4 p.m. today at the Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main St., Klemme. The Rev. Donna Buckman will be officiating.

Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until the time of the service today at the funeral home.

Burial with full military honors will be held at the Resthaven Park Cemetery, Glendale, Ariz., later in the week along with additional services in Arizona.

Richard Lee “Dick” Finders, the son of Carl and Helen (Large) Finders, was born Nov. 23, 1929, at Ferguson, Iowa.

In the early years of his life, his family moved to Klemme, where he attended Klemme schools. Richard attended Klemme High School and graduated with the class of 1948.

During his early adult years, Dick was employed with the Klemme Creamery and drove a milk truck, delivering the creamery’s products throughout the region. He was also employed for periods of time at Northern Lumber, Doc Anderson Veterinary, drove school bus, helped area farmers and drove truck.

On Oct. 12, 1948, Richard entered into military service as a member of the United States Army. He spent a portion of his military tenure in Germany, along with various other places during his nearly four years of duty to his country. On Feb. 14, 1952, Dick was honorably discharged as a sergeant first class.

Upon returning to civilian life he was united in marriage to Donna Greiman. This union was blessed with three daughters, LeiAnn, Karen, and Melissa.

Richard was employed for a time in the airline industry in California. He later became employed in the lumber industry, where he assumed many different managerial, technical assistant positions, leadership capacities, and various support roles. Much of his focus was on market development, start-ups, stability, and restructuring of the various companies he had worked for in the industry.

Though he was a relatively quiet and reserved man, he truly enjoyed the times and journeys that life laid in his pathways. Dick was very proud of his German heritage and relished the opportunity to share this heritage with family and friends. He was a man who loved to have one-on-one conversations, as well as sharing stories of his life with those in his presence. His recollection of the places he had been and the people he had met was excellent.

His knowledge of the American Indians, their artifacts, and their cultures was vast. He was a person who looked forward to investigating and researching into the subject of the day, whether it was determining the species of a plant, flower, animal, or bird.

Richard was an avid fisherman. Those who knew him well would often cross trails with him on his way home from the completion of a successful fishing excursion long before they commenced their own days. A successful and enjoyable day for Richard over the last many years would include casting a fishing line or two in an area lake or river, or maybe just spending time exploring where the area fishing hot spots were. He also enjoyed gardening and was an expert at growing tomatoes. Dick also had a keen ability at the task of cooking.

Richard enjoyed times spent with his wife, Donna, and his daughters and their families. He loved to travel and explore the many places his journeys took him.

Following his wife’s passing, he became re-acquainted with his present companion, Helen Roths, who was also widowed and someone he had known during his years in Klemme. During their years together they shared many mutual loves and interests. They spent much of they year in Camp Verde, Ariz., and returned to Klemme for a few months at a time. The couple shared Richard’s interest in taking journeys on life’s back roads.

Taking the rugged mountain roads and back country roads brought great joy and excitement to Richard and Helen’s lives as they explored the great outdoors and all it’s wonders. In addition to times spent with his and Donna’s own children and their families, Richard enjoyed times spent with Helen’s children and their kids, Hunter, Tyler, Laura, Sarah, Zach, Miake, Erin and Little Kelsey, often taking them on fishing trips around the area. They, too, will miss Dick’s warm smile, friendly conversations, inviting and intriguing stories of life, and his compassion and affection for those around him. All who knew him will reflect back upon his patriotism and remember the special time he had traveling to South Carolina for a military reunion. Richard’s gentleness, friendly personality, and the twinkle in his eye will bring fond memories.

Those who will cherish the memory of his life include his daughters, LeiAnn Tomanini, Phoenix, Ariz., Karen (Craig) Steele, Dewey, Ariz., and Melissa (Darren) Spicer, Gardnerville, Nev.; brothers, Don (Elaine) Finders, Lake Havasu, Ariz. and Jerry Finders, Gardnerville, Nev.; sister-in-law, Nellie Flagler; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins; also his companion, Helen Roths, Klemme, and her children and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Donna; and a sister-in-law.

Andrews Funeral Home, Klemme, (641) 587-2510.

Gordon ‘Gordy’ Beier

KLEMME — Gordon “Gordy” L. Beier, age 68, a longtime resident of Klemme and former custodian of the Klemme and Belmond-Klemme schools, died Tuesday (Feb. 13, 2007) at his home in Klemme surrounded by the love of his family following a lengthy and courageous battle with kidney disease.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the Klemme United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paddy Druhl will be officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, at the Andrews Funeral Home, 528 E. Main St., Klemme, and continue one hour prior to the services at the church on Friday. The family suggests those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial consider the dialysis unit in Mason City in the name of the family, to his family, or the donor’s choice.

Gordon Lowell Beier, was born March 31, 1938, on his parents’ farm in Liberty Township, Hancock County, the son of Elmer and Faye (Bridges) Beier. As a child he was baptized and confirmed at the Liberty Methodist Church.

He attended Liberty Township No. 8 rural school for the first eight years of his education before attending and graduating from Klemme High School.

Gordon was united in marriage to Ione Rosendahl. This union was blessed with five children, Jeri, Jody, Joan, Benji and Jennifer. Gordon and Ione were later divorced.

Gordy was later married to Jane Hrubes on Oct. 29, 1989, at Garner, Iowa.

Gordy had worked in various occupations during his lifetime including a time in the tiling profession with Rosendahl Tiling, in the dairy industry in Vacaville, Calif., and had done quite a little truck driving throughout the region for various entities including Rath Trucking of Clarion.

For more than 19 years he had been a meticulous and hardworking custodian at the Klemme Schools and later with the Belmond-Klemme Schools. His years in this profession were a labor of love, as both Gordy and the youth he was so often in the presence of at the schools, shared a mutual admiration for one another. His warm smile and personality were traits that were inviting and friendly to almost everyone. The kids truly enjoyed Gordy’s caring and insightful ways. His attention to the details of his job were seen by many who knew him.

In addition to working at the schools, Gordy had been employed at the Town Mart in Klemme for many years, where once again his personality and friendliness shown brightly. He was always one to remember the names of many of the customers and quick to share a smile and a bubbling hello when they came through the door. His presence, wit, sharing of the local news, and jokes will be missed by many.

For many years, Gordy had spent time helping out on the farm with the Pringtnitz family where he would look forward to time in one of the pieces of machinery out in the field working the earth or doing whatever task was at hand. As long as he had a few Thermoses of coffee he could fulfill this role for hours. If Gordy wasn’t seen sitting in the seats of one of the pieces of farm equipment, he might be found in the machine shop or other building at the farm once again making sure that everything was clean and in good repair.

He truly loved to spend time with his family. He looked forward to teaching his kids and grandkids how to fish, taking them on camping excursions, or doing nearly anything that meant sharing times with each of them.

One might find Gordy sitting next to them at the piano in a family sing a long, or in the middle of a game which they were playing. He loved music and sang at many funeral services over the years with his sister and others, as well as in the church choir.

Many times, Gordy could be found at the wheel of “Grandpa Gordy’s Shuttle Bus Service” taking them to one of their many extra-curricular activities, or taking them out for a treat. He was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan and loved to attend Vikings home football games from time to time. His love for the “Purple and Gold” was only matched by his love of the “Green and Yellow” details of the farm machinery. On a summer evening he could often be found in the back yard sitting with family and friends sharing fellowship and stories with one another long after the embers of the fire had cooled down. He loved animals and was especially fond of birds, foremost humming birds, which often took a liking to him.

Gordy loved to golf and looked forward to sharing the spirit of Christmas year-round. He was always one to put the needs of others before his own. He enjoyed an occasional trip to the casino to play the slots. Gordy was very proud of his 26 years of sobriety as a member of AA.

Those who were privileged enough to be a family member, friend, or an acquaintance of Gordy’s will remember his welcoming mannerisms and his ability to brighten their day with his magnetic wit. They will remember his courageous battle with his health for the last many years and the great perserverance he had shown.

His family will cherish the memories of those special times spent with Gordy and remember the many humorous footsteps and stories he left for them with his Bridge Removal and Fencing Service, or finding him taking a nap in the machine shop as one of the “Geritol Guys,” watching him with enough coffee to supply for a long time, tooling around in his black pickup, and for just being the one and only “Gordy.”

Those left to remember his life include his wife, Jane Beier of Klemme; sons, Ben Beier and his sons, Trent and Tanner, of Lake Mills, Jesse and wife, Angie Pringnitz, and their children, Kelsi and Jake, of Garner, Jerry and wife, Karrie Pringnitz, and their children, Jade, Jace, Joseph and Jenna, of Garner, Roy Hrubes and his special friend, Jamie, of Shellsburg; daughters, Chris Jackson and husband, Eric, and their children, Lucas and Miranda, of Garner, Jeri VerHelst and her children, Justin and his wife, Tonia, and Stacey of Humboldt, Jody St. John and husband, Gary, and their children, Chad and Cory, of Fort Dodge, Joan Arndt and husband, Bill, and their children, Nikki, Sammi, and Keith, of Fort Dodge, and Jennifer Slattery and husband, Mark, and their children, Audra, Kurt, Lauren and Emma Taylor, of Ridge, Ill.; and great-grandchildren, Bailey and Olivia Ver Helst, of Ruthven; also surviving are his sisters, LaVonne Simon of Winterset, Beverly Thorson of Klemme, Janis (Wayne) Smith of Webster City, Joann (Roger) Hansen of Kanawha; and brothers, Robert (Donna) Beier of Pleasantville, Ronald Beier of Leonardville, Minn., James Beier of Newtown, Pa., and Roger (Linda) Beier of Mason City; also a brother-in-law, Doug Doolittle, of Webster City; and many nieces and nephews.

Across two feet of space, Mr. Lasorda extended his hand and complimented Jerry on his choice of attire. The two exchanged a few words before Mr. Lasorda was quickly ushered out of sight. Just another thrill in Jerry’s many travels.

Jerry and his sons also enjoyed many deep-sea fishing adventures. He always loved to fish and had no shortage of friends and family willing to accompany him on a day-trip to the Channel Islands or San Diego, Calif.

Jerry and his wife, Linda, loved drives to places like Pismo Beach, Sonoma, Laughlin, Las Vegas and Wisconsin to visit their beautiful grandsons.

Jerry graduated from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles and San Fernando Valley College.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and the U.S. Army Security Agency in Chitose, Japan.
