Warren Arnold Tilton
MASON CITY — Warren Arnold Tilton, 80, of 123 Fifth St. N.W., Mason City, died Sunday (Feb. 11, 2007) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Memorial services are being scheduled for Saturday, June 2, 2007, in Mason City, with the Rev. Jeffrey Dahlin, of Praise Community Church, officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery, where he will be interred with his late wife, Charlotte.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 1, 2007, at the Masonic Temple, 302 First St. S.E., Mason City, where a Masonic service will be held that evening.
Warren Tilton was born in Oskaloosa on Dec. 28, 1926, and was raised in Mason City. After graduating from Mason City High School in 1944, Warren enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he trained to become an aerial gunner. Warren graduated from his training in the top five percent of his class, after which he was attached to a PBM Mariner, a twin-engine flying boat, as an upper deck turret gunner and ordnance man engaged in anti-submarine flights out of Florida. Warren subsequently served in the Naval Reserve until 1974, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer.
After the war, Warren graduated from Hamilton Business College under the G.I. Bill. He then worked for the Rock Island Railroad, Standard Oil, and other local firms until in 1956 when he was appointed to the Mason City Police Department. Warren served the Department until 1985, retiring with the rank of Superintendent of the ID Bureau.
Warren married Charlotte Rae Jones of Spirit Lake, Iowa, in 1951, and in a marriage lasting nearly 52 years, they raised three children: daughter, Mona Grupp, of Severna Park, Md., son, Glenn Tilton (deceased), and daughter, Robin Tilton, of Mason City.
In 1972, Warren graduated from North Iowa Area Community College with an Associate Degree in Law Enforcement, proudly sharing the stage with daughter, Mona, who graduated at the same time. Beginning a second career at age 47, while still working with the MCPD, Warren became a registered nurse in 1974, serving as the first male RN at Mercy Hospital in Mason City until 1992.
Warren served his community in many other capacities over the years, attaining leadership positions as Scoutmaster, Mason, Red Cross instructor, officer in the National Police Officers Association, and Shriner. Warren and his family attended First Methodist Church.
In retirement, Warren Tilton enjoyed reading history, assembling his family’s genealogy and traveling. He was known for his unfailing sense of fun, his compassion (enhanced through his experience as nurse in a Psychiatric Unit), and his tolerance, qualities of character for which he was held in high esteem by family, friends, and colleagues. His sense of humor remained his foremost characteristic to the very end, endearing him to the many who visited or cared for him in his final days. In the end, Warren achieved his earnest desire to pass away on his 56th wedding anniversary.
Warren Tilton was preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte; and his son, Glenn.
He is survived by a sister, Marcene Paulsen, Mason City; brother, Terold Tilton, San Diego; daughter, Mona Grupp, Severna Park, Md.; daughter, Robin Tilton, Mason City; granddaughters Charlotte Grupp (Tempe, Ariz.), Victoria Grupp (Severna Park), Jasmine Lane (Mason City), and Tami Barnes (Minneapolis, Minn.); grandsons, Nathaniel Grupp, (Severna Park) and Cpl. Eric Myers (Fort Riley, Kan.); sons-in-law, Eric Grupp (Severna Park) and Bruce Lane (Mason City); and many nieces and nephews.
