Donald ‘Red’ Cottington

 

BRITT — Donald “Red” Cottington, 96, of Britt, formerly of Crystal Lake, passed away Monday (Feb. 19, 2007) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

 

Funeral services for Donald Cottington will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt, with Pastor Jerry Swanberg officiating. Burial will be at Crystal Lake Cemetery in Crystal Lake.

 

A lunch will be served following the burial at the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake.

 

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2007, at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W., Britt, and one hour prior to services at the funeral chapel.

 

Red Cottington, the son of Levi and Etheldra Perry Cottington, was born Aug. 16, 1910, in Stratford, Iowa. The family moved to a farm near Crystal Lake in 1916. Red attended country school through the eighth grade and then graduated from Crystal Lake High School.

 

On Oct. 14, 1932, Red was united in marriage with Henrietta Slattenow in Emmetsburg. The couple made their home in Crystal Lake where Red drove truck for the creamery for nine years. In 1941, Red purchased the Standard Oil tank wagon, which he ran until his retirement in 1971. Henrietta and Red had been married 62 years when she passed away on April 5, 1995. Red continued to live in Crystal Lake until 2002 when he moved to the Summit House in Britt.

 

He enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing and visiting with his customers on his gas route.

 

Red was a member of the Crystal Lake United Methodist Church, where he served on various committees. He served on various committees in the Crystal Lake Community including City Council from 1941 until 1965 and the Woden-Crystal Lake School Board. He was a Crystal Lake Cemetery sexton, township clerk for many years and helped organize the Crystal Lake Commercial Club.

 

Red is survived by his two children: Donna Gabby (Harold), of Peachtree City, Georgia, and Douglas Cottington (Sue), of Emmetsburg; six grandchildren: Kristie White (Jim) of Peachtree City, Georgia, Darsi Wellik (Tom) of Garner, Brent Gabby (Ana) of Arlington, Massachusetts, Dan Huinker (Shawn) of Garner, Lynn Runchey (Dave) of Ankeny and Erin Cottington of Des Moines; 15 great-grandchildren: James, Matthew and Katie White, Justin, Jordan, Jenna and Hannah Wellik, Sofia and Nicolas Gabby, Kelli, Kristin, Katlyn and Karah Huinker and Taylor and Isaac Runchey. He is also survived by three sisters: Gwen Rolland, MariLee McAlpine and Barbara Penquite; and three brothers: Rex Cottington, Bruce Cottington and Levi Cottington.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Henrietta; daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Joe Huinker; and two sisters and four brothers.

 

The family suggests memorials be made to Hospice of North Iowa or to the United Methodist Church in Crystal Lake.

Ronald E. Wagner

 

ALDEN — Ronald E. Wagner, 69, of Alden, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2007) at his home.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Christian Church in Iowa Falls. Burial will be at the Greenwood Cemetery, Nashua.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Linn’s Funeral Home in Iowa Falls.

Darlene R. Lambert

 

MASON CITY — Darlene R. Lambert, 78, of 1604 10th St. S.E., Mason City, formerly of Rockford, died Saturday (Feb. 17, 2007) at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City.

 

Funeral services for Darlene will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 805 E. Main Ave., Rockford, with Pastor Patricia Shaw officiating. Interment will be in the Riverside Cemetery in Rockford.

 

The family will greet relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at the church in Rockford.

Darlene Ruth Lambert was born Dec. 20, 1928, in Charles City, to John and Anna Gruis. She attended and graduated from the Rockford High School, Class of 1946. Darlene furthered her education in nurses training and became a certified L.P.N.

 

Most recently Darlene had been employed at Liberty Square in Nora Springs, doing the work she had enjoyed throughout her life, until retiring in 1996. She was also employed with several nursing establishments in the area.

 

Darlene was married to Leo “Bud” Esser and to this union three children were born. Later, Darlene was married to Alvin Lambert and to this union a son was born.

 

Some of Darlene’s interests included watching all sports, especially Iowa Hawkeye basketball and football and WWF Smack Down wrestling. She liked sewing, quilting and creating crafts. Darlene enjoyed playing cards at the Meadows card club. Her signature craft was making satin pillowcases and giving them to family members.

 

Darlene had lived most all of her life in the Rockford area. She lived in Mason City for the past six years.

 

Darlene is survived by her four children: James (Linda) Esser, of Rockford, Linda Grimm, of Hartland, Wis., Ron (Debi Angell) Esser, of Mason City, and Kevin Lambert, of Oxford, Wis.; nine grandchildren: Angie, Terrie, Billie Jo, Jayne, Malisa, Justin, Jeffrey, Dakota and Shelby; 15 great-grandchildren; and one brother, John “Junior” (Darlene) Gruis, of Rockford.

 

Darlene was preceded in death by her parents, John and Anna Gruis; her two husbands, Leo “Bud” Esser and Alvin Lambert; a granddaughter, India Ann Esser; five sisters and three brothers.

IOWA FALLS — Wilma L. Gehrke, 84, of Iowa Falls, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2007) at the Scenic Manor Care Facility in Iowa Falls.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at the Cottage Community Church, rural Iowa Falls.

Mabel May Ackerman

 

NORTHWOOD — Mabel May Ackerman, 84, of Northwood, died Monday (Feb. 19, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, 2007, at the Conner Colonial Chapel, 1008 First Ave. S., Northwood, with the Rev. Dennis Ganz officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time on Thursday at the chapel. Following the services, her body will be cremated with inurnment to be held at a later date.

 

Mabel May Ackerman was born on Sept. 4, 1922, in Cannon City, Minn., the daughter of Frank and Ora (Marsh) McGee. She received her education in the rural country schools near Faribault, Minn.

 

She was united in marriage to Joe Ackerman on Dec. 8, 1951, in Pine City, Minn. Mabel worked at the Sugar Beet Company in Mason City, Nicholas Farms, Kentucky Fried Chicken in Mason City for several years, and a variety of other restaurants in Mason City.

 

She enjoyed gardening, flowers, latchhook work, bird watching at her home with her family, and listening to the chimes on her clocks at home, but her great love and enjoyment was her family including her grandchildren.

 

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Joe Ackerman, of Northwood; children, Bea Lyons, of Jacksonville Beach, Fla., Robert (Kay) Ackerman, of Mason City, and Jim Ackerman and his special friend, Ralene Rippentrop, of Northwood; five grandchildren: Tom (Lynn) Lyons, Barbara Reeder, Lori (Mark) Johnson, Shannon Ackerman and Mike Legler; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Jerry Ackerman who died on Dec. 29, 2003; one sister and two brothers.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Arlie Gabrielson, 88, of Clear Lake and St. Petersburg, Fla., died Sunday (Feb. 18, 2007) at Seminole, Fla.

 

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 23, 2006, at the Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be held at the Clear Lake Cemetery.

 

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake.

Arlie was born Jan. 13, 1919, in Radcliffe, (Hamilton County) Iowa, to Julius and Josephine (Amundson) Heng. She graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1936.

 

She married Donald Gabrielson on Jan. 16, 1938, in Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. They were married by the Rev. Mostrom. They farmed in Radcliffe and Mason City and moved to Clear Lake in 1970.

 

She is survived by one daughter, Jo (E.R.) Lake, of Treasure Island, Fla.; one son, David Gabrielson, of St. Petersburg, Fla.; one sister, Doris Merrill, of Webster City; five grandchildren: Kim (Lonny) Smith, of Bellefontaine, Ohio, Tim (Lori) Yocum, of Story City, Paul Gabrielson, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Janeice (Bruce) Queen, of Parker, Colo., Jodie (Brian) Chute, of Parker, Colo.; 14 great-grandchildren: Ashley Smith, Aaron (Lindsay) Smith, Rebekah (Tony) Denning, Kristiana, Rachael, Lauren, Jacob, Jarah and “Bill” Samatha Smith, Shay, Jacob and Rachel Queen and Colby and Brendan Chute.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, and by her husband, Donald Gabrielson, on Dec. 7, 1984.

MASON CITY — Shirley Marie Schintgen, 71, of 217 Fifth St. N.W., died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2007) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

 

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 23, at the Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service. Inurnment will be in Elmwood St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Mason City.

Shirley Marie Schintgen was born on Sept. 15, 1935, in Mason City, the daughter of Carl and Lola (Tietgen) Dreher. She graduated from Mason City High School in 1953. Throughout her life she worked at Fareway, the Treasurers Department at the courthouse, Iowa Kemper Insurance, and most recently for RGIS Inventory Services.

 

She enjoyed animals, nature, western history, traveling, taking care of her flower garden, and especially spending time with her family. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church.

 

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Michael (Christine) Schintgen, of Ontario, Canada; stepson, Daniel Schintgen, of Mason City; two sisters, Delores Dreher of Manly and Joan Dreher of Mason City; two step-grandchildren, Leia Schintgen of Williams and Jason Schintgen of Rockford, Ill.

Ross Joseph Caniglia was born July 19, 1931, at Omaha, Neb., a son of Samuel L. and Lillian (Morgan) Caniglia. He was united in marriage to Maureen A. Reefe on Aug. 18, 1951, at Omaha, Neb.

 

Ross was a graduate of Cathedral High School in Omaha, Neb., and a 1951 graduate of Elgin Watch College in Elgin, Ill. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War. While in the service he graduated from Ita Jima Engineering College, Ita Jima, Japan.

 

Following his discharge, Ross studied at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., where he earned BS and BA degrees in business and marketing.

 

Early in his career, he worked for Lincoln National Life Insurance Co., earning its Man of the Year award, and Hallmark Cards, Houston, Texas. Moving to Mason City in 1965, he opened Ross’s Hallmark & Jewelry in Willowbrook Plaza. Along with his brother, William, he developed Regency Shopping Mall and various residential developments on Mason City’s eastside.

 

Ross’s interests were varied, from teaching a gourmet cooking class at NIACC, hunting, fishing, playing cards and winemaking to piloting his own airplane.

 

He held memberships and was involved with: Holy Family Catholic Church, Holy Family Parish Council, Past-President of Holy Family PTA, Past-President of Iowa Jewelers Association, Certified Jewelry Appraisers Association, an original announcer on KCMR radio, founding board member Hawkeye Harvest Food Bank, Rotary, VFW, American Legion, Elks, Knights of Columbus, Mason City Country Club and Black Angus Cattleman’s Association, and Mason City Chamber of Commerce.

 

He is survived by his wife, Maureen Caniglia, of Mason City; a son, Scot (Mary) Caniglia, of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter, Deborah Caniglia, of London, U.K.; two granddaughters, Taylor and Spencer Caniglia, of Omaha, Neb..; a sister, Jean (Paul) McCullough, of Bremerton, Wash.; a brother, William Caniglia, of Albuquerque, N.M.; two brothers-in-law, Dr. William Reefe of Roanoke, Va., and John J. (Sharon) Reefe of Omaha, Neb.; a sister-in-law, Joan (Tom) Heafey, of Omaha, Neb.; and nieces and nephews.

 

Ross was preceded in death by his parents, beloved aunt, Fina Carnazzo; and uncle, Judge Samuel P. Caniglia.

Bertha Shaw

CRESCO — Bertha Shaw, 100, of Cresco, passed away on Monday (Feb. 19, 2007) at the Evans Memorial Home in Cresco.

 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007, at the First Lutheran Church in Cresco.

 

Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco, and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Britt.

 

Bertha Margaret Shaw was born in Walcott on Nov. 8, 1906, to John H. and Johanna (Suelau) Strohbeen. She attended elementary school in Walcott and high school in Davenport, and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1928.

 

On June 10, 1930, Bertha married David F. Shaw at her parent’s home. They moved to Britt where he practiced medicine until 1972, except for five years during World War II when he served as a flight surgeon for the Army Air Force.

 

They lived in Long Beach, Calif.; Delhart, Texas; and Pratt, Kan. During one year when David was in Guam with the 20th Air Force, she and their two sons came back to Britt. They spent the last year in Vallejo, Calif.

 

Along with being a homemaker, she was a member of the Congregational Church, Nota Bena Club, Medical Auxiliary and Library Board. She was a Red Cross volunteer, Den Mother, golfer, avid bridge player, and she enjoyed spending time at the cottage on Spirit Lake.

 

After the death of her husband in 1980, she came to Cresco and lived with David and family until 1992 when she broke her hip and had been a resident at the Evans Memorial Home ever since.

Domingo L. Garza was born on April 29, 1923, in Cactus, Texas, the son of Norverto and Marguretia (Lugo) Garza.

 

Domingo was united in marriage to Cruz P. Luna on Jan. 12, 1952, in Carrizo Springs, Texas. After their marriage he went to work for Deckers as a butcher, where he worked for 33 years until his retirement in 1983. For many years he raised his granddaughter Nikki (Garza) Gieseke.

 

He enjoyed traveling to see family, gambling, gardening, yard work and taking trips to Texas.

 

He is survived by his daughter, Dora (Steve) Gould, of Clear Lake; his son, Victor (Barb) Garza, of Buffalo Center; seven grandchildren: Nikki (Jeff) Gieseke, Levi (Jenny) Van Oort, Jesse Garza, Danielle Hall, Daphne (Matt) Bernard, Joel Gould and Toni Gould; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters: Julia Ramierez and Meeli Ramierez; one brother, Galo (Maria) Ramierez; and a special niece, Emma Villarreal.

 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Cruz, sister Ramona, and his parents, Norverto and Marguretia.

William ‘Bill’ Brennan

 

CHARLES CITY — William “Bill” Brennan, 53, of Charles City, died Wednesday (Feb. 21, 2007) at his home, of cancer. Bill entered his Lord’s presence while surrounded by loving family and friends.

 

Funeral services for Bill Brennan will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastor Alan Schulz officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.

William Eugene Brennan was born April 20, 1953, at Fort Dodge, the son of Bernard and Vivian (Gernhart) Brennan. He graduated from Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock Community School in 1971 and attended North Iowa Area Community College.

 

Bill was united in marriage to Lou Bucknell on April 8, 1982, at the Little Brown Church. Bill worked at Fareway in Charles City while at home with his parents. He then worked at Bissonnette Chevrolet in Charles City, Coopers in Osage and was proprietor of Bill’s FS and Bill’s Auto Detail before returning to his career in the grocery business. Bill then worked for HyVee in Charles City, Econofoods in Charles City until their closing and was currently at Econofoods in Clear Lake.

 

One of his favorite pastimes was working on cars. His 1969 GTO was one of his pride and joys. Bill enjoyed visiting with people and also helping people in whatever way he could, being remembered as the “quiet helper.” Family, however, had first place in his life and he always looked forward to spending time with them.

 

Living family members include his wife, Lou, of Charles City; three children, Amy (Kevin) Krueger, of Floyd, Heather (Aaron) Thompson, of Olivia, Minn., and Adam (Keri) Hull, of Osage; three grandchildren, Anna Hull and Emma and Lily Thompson; his father, Bernard Brennan, of Charles City; his mother, Vivian Brennan, of Mason City; three brothers: Joe (Kayla) Brennan, of Osage, Bernie, of Mason City and Neal (Tammie), of Plymouth; a sister, Sandy (Richard) Wilde, of Osage; his father-in-law, Cletus Bucknell, of Ionia; and many nieces and nephews.

Kenneth E. Kalahar

 

MASON CITY — Kenneth E. Kalahar, 86, of 2904 Sunrise Court, died Tuesday (Feb. 20, 2007) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

 

Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Wendy Abrahamson, St. John’s Episcopal Church, officiating. A gathering of family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, with Masonic services at 6:30 p.m. conducted by Harding Lodge No. 649 A.F. & A.M.

Ken was born Sept. 4, 1920, in Fort Dodge, the son of Mack and Anna (Willey) Kalahar. He graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1938, received his B.S. degree in 1949 and his M.S degree in 1952 from Iowa State University.

 

Ken served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. in 1942 during World War II. He then served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948 to 1965. He retired from the Air Force with the rank of major.

 

Ken married Jeanne Hilton on Feb. 7, 1942, in Princeton, Mo. While living in Mason City, Ken was director of Gas Operations for Interstate Power Company, Alliant Energy. In 1972, he transferred to Dubuque and retired in 1985 after 32 years with Interstate Power. The Kalahar’s returned to Mason City in 2003.

 

While in Dubuque, Ken was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church and then St. John’s Episcopal Church in Mason City. Through the years, Ken was active in a number of fraternal organizations including Masonry, Boy Scouts and Rotary. He was a member of Harding and Metropolitan Masonic Lodges, past Master of Metropolitan Lodge in Dubuque, past president of High Twelve International, 1987-88, York Rite, Knights of the York Cross on honor, Scottish Rite, El Kahir Shrine, Eastern Star, Grotto, Sojourner and was a Double Headed Eagle in the Masonic Lodge.

 

He was a member of Rotary, past president of Mason City Rotary, 1964-65, and past Rotary No. 5970 District Governor. Ken received the Silver Beaver Award in Boy Scouts and was past president of Winnebago Council. He was also a member of Chamber Ambassadors and was past president of the Midwest Gas Association.

 

Ken was a loving husband, father, grandfather and enjoyed spending time with his family at their cabin in Northern Minnesota.

 

Ken is survived by his wife, Jeanne Kalahar, of Mason City; daughters, Suzan Klevos and husband, Paul, of Humboldt, Jodie Stevens and husband, Terry, of Alexander; sons, Kenneth Kalahar II and wife, Joanne, of Ankeny, Jon Kalahar and wife, Julie, of Dubuque; grandchildren, Jeffrey Klevos, Tad Kalahar, Christina, Katie and Kara Gaiser, Kaycee and Courtney Kalahar; great-grandchildren, Kristina and Jessica Kalahar and Jordan Elizabeth Latham.

MASON CITY — Eva A. Taylor, 91, a resident of the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City and formerly of 924 N. Fillmore Ave., Mason City, died Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 20, 2007) at Good Shepherd.

Eva was united in marriage to Jay Taylor on June 27, 1933, in Mason City. To this union, Eva and Jay were blessed with four daughters.

 

Some of Eva’s interests and hobbies included dancing with Jay in their earlier years, crocheting, quilting, needlework, flower gardening and scrap-booking. She found great joy in taking long walks, listening to piano music and spending time with her daughters and their families.

 

Beyond homemaking and tending to her own family, Eva was employed by numerous families in the area as a child-care provider and for house cleaning service. She was a former member of the Moose Lodge.

 

Eva will be dearly missed by her daughters, Mary and Bud Heitland, of Mason City, Joan Taylor of Fort Collins, Colo., Ruth Ann and James Kuper of Greeley, Colo., and Rose Taylor, of Mason City; her 10 grandchildren: Jeffery (Sue) Heitland, Sara (Robert) Matheus, Dawn (David) Stoltenberg, Kathy Burgener, Hugh (Chris) Burgener, Terry Burgener, Jacob Burgener, Phyllis (J.T.) Sayotovich, Carol Kuper and Linda Butler. She will also be cherished in the hearts of her 18 great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; her special friend, Linda Faught; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Helma H. Gruhn

ELDRIDGE — Helma H. Gruhn, the daughter of Ingwer (Henry) and Anna (Martensen) Jacobs, was born at Sanborn, Iowa, on May 9, 1915. She lived her youth and received her education at country school Lincoln No. 8 and later attended school in Hartley.

Helma was united in marriage to Ernest Gruhn Jr. in 1936. They were blessed with one daughter, Joyce. Following their marriage they farmed for a short time until the untimely death of Ernest in 1937.

For 40 years, she worked for the Central Iowa Telephone Co. and later the GTE phone company, both of Hartley.

Helma moved to the assisted living care center in the fall of 2002. She was admitted to the Baum-Harmon Mercy Hospital in Primghar on Feb. 17, 2007, because of health problems and died there on Feb. 18, 2007.

She is survived by her daughter, Joyce Bryant and her husband, Jim, of Eldridge; two grandsons, Jeff Bryant and his wife, Melinda, of LeClaire, Iowa, and Terry Bryant and his wife, Dawn, of Cumming, Ga.; two great-granddaughters, Jennifer and Sarah Bryant; one great-grandson, Jackson Bryant; two brothers, Glenn Jacobs, of Denver, Colo., and Delbert Jacobs, of Kansas City, Mo.; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Helma was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, the Dorcas Society, Kilo Club, Rebekahs, and many bridge clubs over the years.

Donald Dean Steinberg, son of George and Hazel (Steele) Steinberg, was born Jan. 5, 1930, in rural Buffalo Center, Iowa. He graduated from Buffalo Center High School in 1947. He was baptized and confirmed in the Methodist Church.

Donald married Gelaine Erdahl on Sept. 20, 1952, and to this union two children were born: Randall and Mary. He farmed near Buffalo Center until Dec. 8, 1988. Donald married Olga (Sager) DeMeo at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont, Minn. on April 12, 1978. They moved to Mason City on Dec. 8, 1988. Donald was confirmed and became a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. He was employed at Kraft Foods and then at Hy-Vee West and Hy-Vee East until his health failed. Donald retired in 2004.

Donald is survived by his wife, Olga, of Mason City; one son, Randall Steinberg, and wife, Cheryl, of Buffalo Center, Iowa; one daughter, Mary Albrecht, and husband, Richard, of Oronoco, Minn.; three stepsons, Arlo Sager and wife, LeAnn, of Fairmont, Minn., Darrel Sager and wife, Linda, of Fairmont, Minn., Curtis Sager of Truman, Minn.; one step-daughter, Audrey Mohr, and husband, Otto, of Mapleton, Minn.; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Steenhard and husband, Alfred, of Buffalo Center, Iowa, Marlys Bruns, of Titonka, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Alice Mary Miller was born Jan. 1, 1922, in New Hampton to Jerome and Stella (Sheridan) Shekleton. She received her teaching certificate from the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls.

She was united in marriage to Walter H. Miller on Feb. 19, 1949, in Lawler. She taught school in rural schools of Chickasaw County, junior high at Rockwell, Iowa, and at Sacred Heart in Boone for 24 years.

After her marriage, they moved to a farm west of Templeton, Iowa. Because of her husband’s ill health, they moved back to Boone where she then resumed teaching. She retired from active teaching in 1989, but continued as an aide in the school library for several years.

She was a 50-year member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Boone and a present member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton.

She enjoyed embroidering, reading, playing cards and tutoring. She especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her sons, Mark W. and wife, Michele Miller, of Norwalk, and Jerome A. and wife, Terry Miller, of Iowa City; a daughter, Maggie M., and husband, Steve Pearson, of Hampton; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Norbert J. Neuerburg

OSAGE — Norbert J. Neuerburg, age 93, of Osage, died Friday (Feb. 23, 2007) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

Norbert was born Oct. 11, 1913, in Wadena, Minn., the son of Nicholas and Louise (Tabery) Neuerburg. He married Estella Mandler on June 29, 1938, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They began their married life in Waterloo, where Norbert worked at Rath Packing Co. They then farmed in Minnesota, after which they farmed for 30 years near Cresco, Iowa.

Norbert also hauled milk for several years for the Schley Cheese Co. and drove a school bus for several years for the Howard-Winneshiek Community School District. He retired from farming and moved to Osage in 1986.

He was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus. Norbert enjoyed playing cards, dancing, fishing, and pitching horseshoes, and mixed with everything — a little mischief.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4:30 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a rosary at 5 p.m. and a Scripture service at 6:30 p.m.

Norbert is survived by two sons, Joseph of Traverse City, Mich., and Ronald and wife, Marilyn, of Eldora; four grandchildren; three sisters; three brothers; three sisters-in-law, including Leona Rogers and Lucille Hultman of Osage; and special friend, Beulah Cockrum, of Osage.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Estella, in 1997; his parents; and two brothers.
