Larry C. Olander

MASON CITY — Larry C. Olander, of 1125 Briarstone Drive, Mason City, died Friday (Nov. 24, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.

Memorial services will be held for immediate family on Monday, Nov. 27, at the First United Methodist Church, Boone, Iowa, with inurnment at Linnwood Cemetery, Boone. The family suggests memorials go to National Kidney Foundation.

Larry was born April 20, 1940, in Boone, the son of John Emil and Valora (Simmons) Olander. He graduated from Boone High School in 1958 and then attended Iowa State University, Ames, on a swimming scholarship.

He married Laura Katheryn Tippy on April 9, 1977, in Norfolk, Neb.

Larry completed more than 50 years in the grocery business, starting his career in Boone, and over the years has been employed by Fareway, Cash Wise, and Safeway stores in California, Nevada, Nebraska and Iowa.

Larry moved to Mason City in 1990 after owning and operating his own grocery store in Nebraska. He was produce manager for the Cash Wise grocery store for 10 years until it was purchased by Hy-Vee Food and Drug Store in 2000. He continued to work for Hy-Vee in its new location until he retired.

He enjoyed golfing, boating, fishing, drag racing, classic cars and was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan. The most important thing in his life was his family.

He was known by his family, friends and the community as the “The Good Guy.”

In 1991, he was the recipient of a kidney from the donor network, which helped him to enjoy many more wonderful years and he was privileged to meet the donor family.

Larry was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mason City, Iowa, and the Mason City Street Rods.

He is survived by his wife Laura Olander, Mason City, Iowa; four children: Jeffrey Olander and his wife Theresa, Wildwood, Mo., Michael Olander and his wife Kristine, Minneapolis, Minn., Melissa Hershey, Las Vegas, Nev., and Zachary Olander, Minneapolis, Minn.; seven grandchildren: Justin Olander, Kevin Olander, Andraya Olander, Caitlyn Hershey, Nathan Olander, Lauren Olander, Regan Olander; and one brother, Stan Olander, and his wife, Lavon, Milwaukee, Wis.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Patricia Willis and Calista Sutton; and one brother, John Olander.

Dorothy Penning

BUFFALO CENTER — Dorothy Penning, 88, of Buffalo Center, died on Saturday (Nov. 25, 2006) at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at Ramsey Reformed Church, rural Titonka, with Pastor Dennis Redeker officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday evening beginning at 5 p.m. and ending at 8 p.m. at Winter Funeral Home in Buffalo Center.

Muriel Elaine Buns

BRITT — Muriel Elaine Buns, 82, of Britt, entered her heavenly home on Thursday (Nov. 23, 2006). She was surrounded by love and family at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral services for Muriel Buns will be held Monday, Nov. 27, at 10 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church with Janelle Siffring, AiM, officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Britt.

Visitation will be held on today, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel in Britt and continue one hour prior to services at the church.

Faith and family were Muriel’s joys in life.

Born Sept. 8, 1924, to Oliver and Pauline (Bredeson) Sveen in Lake Mills, she was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith at Synod Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. After graduating from Lake Mills High School, Muriel earned her nursing degree from St. Joseph School of Nursing in Mason City. She first worked as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City, where she met her future husband, Robert “Bob” Buns. She also worked at Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Forest City Hospital in Forest City and later at Westview Care Center in Britt.

Muriel was united in marriage to Bob on July 2, 1952, at the Synod Lutheran Church in Lake Mills, and over the years the couple was blessed with five children. She and her husband made their home in Britt where she supported the family’s road construction business for more than 50 years. Muriel enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She and Bob spent the winter months in Texas and later Arizona. She participated in several Cancer Relay for Life walks.

Muriel was active in her faith throughout her life and was a member of First Lutheran Church in Britt, where she was a member of Elizabeth Circle.

Those who will carry on Muriel’s memory include her husband of 54 years, Bob, of Britt; her children: Tom (LeAnne) of Clear Lake, Susan (Ronald) Brooks of Britt, Gary (Rose) of Stewartville, Minn., Sandra (Kirk) Pearson of Klemme, and David (Vicki) of Louisville, Ky.; her 12 grandchildren: Sarah (Rob) Engebretson, Anthony Buns and Matthew Buns, Carrie (Anthony) Myers and Troy (Danielle) Brooks, Jessica Buns, Eric and Andrew Buns, Amy (Nathan) Bluhm, Melissa Pearson, Jennifer (Shane) Schreck and Keenan Gizzi; her great grandchildren: Korey, Nicholas, Austin, Emma, Michael, Sydney; her sister, Lois (Arden) Holstad, of Tucson, Ariz.; her sister-in-law, Margie (Ray) Hobbs of Britt; and several nieces, nephews and friends.

Muriel was preceded in death by her parents and her father and mother-in-law.

Muriel’s family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of North Iowa.

Eric N. Buseman

WEST DES MOINES — Eric N. Buseman, 61, of West Des Moines and longtime resident of Belmond, passed away Saturday (Nov. 25, 2006) at the Johnston Mercy Hospice Unit in Johnston.

Hurshel L. Earles

OSAGE — Hurshel L. Earles, age 91, of Osage, died Friday (Nov. 24, 2006) at MCRHC-Hospice Unit in Osage.

Hurshel was born August 13, 1915, in Corwith, Iowa, the son of John L. and Amizon (Dunfee) Earles.

Hurshel farmed near Crystal Lake, Lime Springs, and Osage. He moved to Osage in 1966 and worked at Osage Cemetery, Farmer’s Produce, and was custodian at the Home Trust and Savings Bank before retiring. Hurshel was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Osage and the Osage Senior Center. He delivered Meals on Wheels until he turned 90. He earned recognition from the Iowa state governor for his volunteer services. He enjoyed gardening and making wooden crafts.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28, at the First United Methodist Church in Osage with the Rev. Dr. J. Samuel Subramanian officiating. Burial will be in the Little Cedar Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage and will continue one hour before services at the church.

Hurshel is survived by three daughters: Betty Norrie of Rochester, Minn., Susan (John) Campbell of Harlan, Linda (Paul) Dawson of Newton; three sons: Jerry (Mary Ellen) Earles of Independence, Keith (Carol) Earles of Traer, Steven Earles of Clear Lake; one sister, Nona Van Dusseldorp of Britt; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth in 2001; brothers: Willis, Harlow, Burkley, John, and James; sisters: Sylvia Kearney, Murre Fillenworth, and Estle Earles; a son, Richard Earles; a daughter, Marjorie Earles; and a granddaughter, Sheri Earles.

CHARLES CITY — Duane Garman, 73, of Charles City, died Friday, (Nov. 24, 2006) at his home.

A funeral Mass for Duane Garman will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Monsignor Russell Bleich and the Rev. Carl Ries will concelebrate the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Charles City. There will be a flag presentation by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

Nellie Margaret Pletcher

CLARION — Nellie Margaret Pletcher, age 89, lifelong resident of Clarion, Iowa, passed away Saturday, (Nov. 25, 2006) at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion, Iowa.

Memorial services for Nellie Pletcher will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at the First United Methodist Church in Clarion, Iowa, with Pastor Don Morrison officiating.

Zelma Rae Johnson

MASON CITY — Zelma Rae Johnson, 86, of Mason City, died Friday (Nov. 24, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

A funeral Mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday (Nov. 27, 2006) at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams, with the Rev. Jon Seda officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to the Zelma Rae Johnson Memorial Fund.

Zelma Rae Johnson was born March 19, 1920, in Mason City, the daughter of Lacey and Amanda (Carson) Watkins. She attended school in both Mason City and Clear Lake, graduating from Clear Lake. She was married to Robert F. Johnson and to this union four children were born. Zelma and her husband spent most of their life living in Mason City. She enjoyed cooking, crossword puzzles, and crocheting and was especially known for being a great cook. She also enjoyed vacationing in Willmar, Minn., with her late husband. She was a long-time member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

Zelma is survived by her children: Elizabeth Engstler and husband, Marvin, of Garner, Paul Johnson and wife, Deb, of Mason City, Joe Johnson of Hackensack, Minn., and Ellen Johnson-Maye and husband, Mike, of Seattle, Wash.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sisters, Donita Evenson of Beresford, S.D., and Betty Jean Fiske of Garner; numerous nieces and nephews and her special cat, Romeo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob; sister, Mary Ann; and daughter-in-law, Joan Johnson.

CLARION — Raymond Ansel, age 70, of Clarion, died Friday (Nov. 24, 2006) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

Mildred Jane Jurgenson

 


MESERVEY — Mildred Jane Jurgenson, 85, of Rockwell, formerly of Meservey, died Sunday morning (Nov. 26, 2006) with her daughters at her side.

 

 Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, at the Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake with the Rev. David Wiersbe officiating.

 

 Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 28 at Ward–Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Graveside services will be Wednesday, 1:30 p.m. at the Meservey Cemetery, Meservey, Iowa.

 

 Memorials may be given to Evangelical Free Church, Clear Lake, Salem United Methodist Church, Meservey, Iowa, or Red Bird Mission, Beverly, Kentucky.

 

Jane was born on May 4, 1921, in Stanford, Kentucky, to Morgan and Martha Kinningham Slusher. She attended schools in Kentucky and graduated from Red Bird Mission School, Beverly, Kentucky, in 1940.

 

She graduated with a two-year teaching certificate from Union (Westmar) College, Lemars, Iowa, in 1942.

 

 Jane taught school in Alexander, Iowa, during the 1942-43 school year. She met G. Earl Jurgenson, a family practice physician, in Meservey while visiting her friend’s Salem E.U.B. church. They married in Truman, Minn., on May 9, 1943. She was at her husband’s side during the remaining 37 years of his medical practice.

 

 Earl retired in 1980. The couple moved to Hot Springs Village, Ark., where they lived until returning to Iowa in 1992. They settled in Clear Lake and enjoyed nine years close to family and friends, old and new. Earl died on March 2, 2001. Jane moved to Homestead Assisted Living, Mason City, in 2002, and to the Rockwell Community Nursing Home in Rockwell where she resided until her death.

 

 A devoted member of the Salem U.M. Church during her years in Meservey, Jane taught Sunday school. She was a member of the Federated Womens Club and held local and state offices during her active membership years. She was an avid bowler and bridge player and nurtured lasting friendships throughout her lifetime. Jane was filled with an abiding faith in her Lord that carried her from the hills of Kentucky to the farmlands of Iowa, embracing new experiences with laughter and joy. She will be remembered by family and friends as a supportive source of strength.

 

 Jane Jurgenson is survived by daughter, Susan, and her husband, Robert H. Pals, of Meservey, daughter, Judy, and husband, Dr. Robert Gross, of Clear Lake; grandchildren: Thomas Pals and wife, Valerie, of Alexander, Sara Pals of Meservey, Alison Gross of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Cooper Gross of Vermillion, South Dakota; great-grandchildren: Robert, Brianna and Brandi Pals; brother, William Slusher and wife, Virginia, of Overland Park, Kan.; sister-in-law, Faye Slusher, of Meservey; and beloved nieces and nephews.

 

 Her husband Earl; parents, Morgan and Martha; brothers: James, George, Joseph and Ronald Slusher; sisters: Lucille Messer, Kathleen Bargo, Blanche Greer and Ethel Davis, preceded her in death.

Dorothy Penning


 

BUFFALO CENTER — Dorothy Penning, 88, of Buffalo Center died on Saturday (Nov. 25, 2006) at Timely Mission Nursing Home in Buffalo Center.

Dorothy Sleper Penning was born to Dick and Anna (Meyer) Sleper on Nov. 14, 1918, while Dick was serving in France during World War I. She met her father when she was two years old.

 

Dorothy was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Ramsey Reformed Church in rural Titonka.

 

She attended German Township country school No. 4, Titonka High School, and the Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls.

 

She married Clarence B. Penning on Dec. 31, 1941, and continued teaching while he served in the South Pacific, returning home on January 11, 1946. Upon his return, the couple farmed near Britt, Iowa.

 

In February 1963, the family moved to the Penning farm near Buffalo Center.

 

Dorothy served in the Ramsey Reformed Church in many capacities and enjoyed each one. She and Clarence enjoyed local celebrations, fairs, and reunions of family and classmates. She will be missed and remembered in the hearts of her family, friends, and former students.

 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, on Oct. 22, 1997; brothers-in-law, Marvin Penning and his wife, Mildred, and John Penning; and by sister-in-law, Thelma Penning Beenken.

 

She is survived by her children: Barbara Penning Donkersloot and husband Robert of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; Douglas Penning and wife, Karen, of Buffalo Center, and Carolyn Penning Edgar and husband, Jay, of Mason City; her grandchildren: Carina Donkersloot and fiancé, Jeff Degase, Ryan Donkersloot and fianceé, Michelle Adler, and Austin Donkersloot; brothers-in-law, Robert Penning and wife, Magdalene, and Richard Beenken, and sister-in-law, Amelia Graves; and aunt, Ruby Sleper

Nellie Margaret Pletcher


 

CLARION — Nellie Margaret Pletcher, age 89, lifetime resident of Clarion, Iowa, passed away Saturday, (Nov. 25, 2006) at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

Nellie Margaret Pletcher, daughter of Frank and Ora Barker, was born on Dec. 17, 1916, in Clarion. She was raised and educated in Clarion, graduating from Clarion High School in 1934. She enjoyed working for three generations of the Sumners family at the Sumners Insurance Agency.

 

Nellie was united in marriage to Raymond (Rab) Pletcher on July 6, 1940. They made their home in Florence and after Rab retired, they built a home on Lake Cornelia.

 

Nellie enjoyed her bridge club, UMW Circle, and her coffee klatches. She was always “on the go” and loved visiting with her friends.

 

She is survived by her son, John, and his wife, Barbara; grandsons, Ryan and Brett.

 

Nellie was preceded in death by her husband, Rab; sisters, Leone and Ellen; brothers, Emory, Clare, Bill, Guy, and Glen.

Raymond Ansel

 

MASON CITY — Raymond Ansel, age 70, passed away Friday (Nov. 24, 2006) at the Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.

 

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006 at 10:30 a.m. at St John’s Catholic Church with Father Chris Podhajsky officiating. Burial will be at the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery.

 

A visitation will be held from 5 until 8 p.m. this evening at the Ewing Dugger Helgeson Funeral Home, 602 North Main Street, Clarion, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. A parish wake service will be held at 7 p.m.

 

Raymond Lee Ansel, son of George and Wilda (Phillips) Ansel was born on June 22, 1936, at Oak Park, Ill., and was educated there. On May 4, 1957, Ray was united in marriage to Barbara Andorf at Elmhurst, Ill. The couple made their home in the area. In 1961 the family moved to Kanawha. Ray and Barbara owned and operated the Farmers Club, and later had the distributorship for Marigold milk route. In 1999 the couple moved to Clarion and has since resided there.

 

Ray’s life centered around his family, and grandchildren and the special times they spent together canoeing in the boundary waters. He enjoyed mowing his and his neighbor’s yard.

 

Ray was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church where he served on the Parrish Council. While Ray lived in Kanawha he was a member of the City Council, and was a 36-year member of the Kanawha volunteer fire department.

 

Surviving Ray are his wife, Barbara of Clarion; daughters, Betsy Mraz and her husband, Lynn, Laurie Schreur and her husband, Herbert; sons, Joseph Ansel, Mark Ansel and his wife Meridee; three granddaughters: Kathrine, Leanna and Makayla; eight grandsons, Garrett, Matthew, William, Jacob, Kevin, Tyler, Noah, and Jaden; three step-grandchildren, Zac, Marissa, and Hannah and many nieces, nephews and friends.

 

Preceding him in death were his parents; son, Michael; three sisters: Betty, Vivian, and Muriel; and a brother, Bill.

Funeral services for Eric N. Buseman will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday evening, Nov. 28, at the Lutheran Church of Hope, corner of Jordan Creek and Ashford in West Des Moines. FERTILE — Goldie A. Felland, 78, of Fertile, died Saturday (Nov. 25, 2006) at The Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, at the Fertile Lutheran Church in Fertile with Pastor Dennis Ganz officiating. Burial will be at Brush Point Cemetery in rural Fertile.

 

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 28, at the Petersen Lund Funeral Home, 505 N. Clark St. in Forest City, and an hour prior to service at the church.

 

Goldie A. Felland was born in rural Leland, on Oct. 5, 1928, the daughter of Alfred (Swede) Anderson and Gladys (Hagen) Anderson. She received her education in rural school near her home, attended Leland schools and graduated from Lake Mills High School.

 

On Jan. 25, 1950, she married Roger Felland at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Leland. The couple made their home in Fertile their entire married lives. Goldie worked retail sales for many years in Forest City. She worked for Sid Reuben, Lynn’s Clothing, Anderson’s Clothing and Forest Fashion. Dressing up for Ridiculous Days was a favorite time for Goldie. She worked for several years at the Fountain Center Treatment Center in Forest City until retiring.

 

She enjoyed antiquing, quilting and doing crafts. She was a member of the Worth County Election Board for years and an active member of the Fertile community — anything to do with Fertile she was an ardent supporter of volunteering for many different efforts over the years.

 

She was a member of Fertile Lutheran Church, Women’s Circle, and the Clear Lake VFW Women’s Auxiliary.

 

She is survived by her children, Sheila Trees, of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; Lona (Marty) Trees, of Forest City; Tanya Olson of Forest City and six grandchildren: Jessica (Trees) Walter of Forest City, Sarah Trees of Phoenix, Ariz., Andy Trees of Forest City, Ann Trees of Ames, and Taylor and Sydney Olson of Forest City; and a great-granddaughter, Madeline Walter. Also surviving is a brother, Gerald (Judy) Anderson, of Forest City; several nieces and nephews; and special friends Ruth Ouverson and Jody Smith.

WEST DES MOINES — Eric N. Buseman, 61, of West Des Moines and longtime resident, of Belmond, died Saturday (Nov. 25, 2006) at the Mercy Hospice House in Johnston after a long battle with cancer.

Eric Norman Buseman was born on Sept. 11, 1945, in Belmond, the son of Lester and Ida (Steenblock) Buseman. Eric grew up in Belmond, graduating from Belmond High School with the Class of 1963.

 

He farmed in Belmond for many years. He owned a John Deere dealership in Belmond for a time. Eric was an active member of the community, being a volunteer with the Belmond ambulance organization.

 

Eric moved to Des Moines in 1997. He enjoyed life to the fullest. Eric invented different items, holding patents on a number of them. He enjoyed attending dances and playing softball with his team, the Rusty Pipes. Eric attended the Lutheran Church of Hope.

 

Eric’s greatest joy was being a father and grandfather.

 

Eric is survived by four children: Todd (Michelle) of Belmond; Cathy (Ryan) Johnson of Urbandale; Wendy (Brian) Lambert of West Des Moines; and Beth (Josh) Kaiser of Cumming; one brother, Harold (Donna) Buseman of Belmond; companion, Bets Kohnen; six grandchildren: Ashlyn, Alex, Ella, Mya, Evan, and Elise; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

 

Eric is preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Bev Robbins.

Born Nov. 26, 1967, in Ames, Iowa, to John and Karen Brockett, Kathy passed away on Friday (Nov. 3, 2006) after a courageous and lengthy battle.

Prior to her illness, Kathy worked for over a decade at Bright Horizons Family Solutions as an assistant director, caring for children that she loved.

 

She was very active in her church and with The Resolve Group, Dallas Chapter, where she served on the board.

 

A private graveside service was held Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2006, followed by a 11 a.m. memorial service and reception in Kathy’s honor at the Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church, 9800 Preston Road in Dallas, Texas, with the Rev. Elizabeth McLean and the Rev. Dr. Ann Hoch officiating.

James was born on Feb. 2, 1924, in Henning, Minn., the son of Roy E. and Regina (Myre) Thomas. The family moved to Mason City where he attended school. While in high school, James worked for Mason City Tent and Awning and at the Decker’s Packing Plant. After graduation from Mason City High School in 1943 he joined the United States Marines. James served on the USS McClean in the Pacific Theatre until his discharge in 1945.

 

He was employed with the Northwestern Portland Cement Company where he supervised boilers until later becoming an electrician.

 

James was united in marriage to Beverly Niver on Oct. 15, 1949, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. They made their home in Mason City, where they raised nine children.

 

James life centered around the love he had for his family. He was a very devoted husband, father, and grandpa.  He enjoyed gardening, working on cars, woodwork crafting, fishing and pheasant hunting. His greatest passions were his grandchildren and spending time with the family pets, Kally, Dude, Tosha and Gizmo. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 101 and the Master Gardners Club.

Paul Steven Helgeson was born on Jan. 6, 1942, in Story City, Iowa, the son of Kerner and Florence (Severson) Helgeson. He attended and graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1960, Waldorf College in 1962, and also from Iowa State University.

 

Upon completing his schooling he was a salesman for Farm Service Co. in Indianola before moving to Northwood to raise his family on their farm west of Northwood. He also worked for Farm Service Co. in Worth County, and sold insurance for Farm Bureau in Northwood. The family farmed for 25 years in the Northwood area before his retirement moving into Northwood in 2002.

 

He was united in marriage to Sharon “Shar baby” Reyerson on Aug. 1, 1964, at Silver Lake Lutheran Church, rural Northwood, and to this union three children were born, Michelle, Susan and Steven.

 

He enjoyed entertaining friends, hosting Bible study groups, music, auctions, remodeling homes, landscaping, and his mission trip to Mexico with the Christian farmers organization, but his great love and enjoyment was his family, grandchildren and countless friends. Paul was also a special uncle to his many nieces and nephews.

 

He was a member of Evangelical Free Church in Clear Lake, First Lutheran Church in Northwood, and the Worth County Extension Council in Northwood.

 

Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 42 years; Sharon Helgeson, of Northwood; children, Michelle Perry and her husband, Rick, of Marion, Susan Kliment and her husband, Darrin, of Northwood, and Steven Helgeson and his wife, Katie, of Roland; seven grandchildren, Alyssa, Rachel, Jaclyn and Nicholas Perry, Caleb, Samuel and Josiah Paul Kliment; sister, Kathryn Helgeson of Gurnee, Illinois; a brother, Thomas Helgeson and his wife, Barbara, of Radcliffe; and a sister, Linda Thompson and her husband, Dave, of Shenandoah; and many nieces, nephews and countless friends.

Donald Matthew Bowers and Alice Viola Bowers

 

APPLETON, Wis. — Donald Matthew Bowers, 83, and Alice Viola (Bergelin) Bowers, 81, both of Appleton, went to be with their Savior on Nov. 28, 2006.

 

Don was born June 6, 1923, son of Earl W. and Esther L. (Wiegand) Bowers; Alice was born Dec. 14, 1924, daughter of Albert J. and Hertha C. (Harder) Bergelin.

 

Don and Alice were united in marriage on Feb. 23, 1947, at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church in the Town of Chilton and were blessed with almost 60 years together. Both were long-time members of Faith Lutheran Church, Appleton. They enjoyed traveling together, spending time with their children and grandchildren and shared a love of gardening.

 

Donald served in Co. D, 534th Engineer Boat & Shore Regiment of the U.S. Army from January 1943 to January 1946, serving in the South Pacific and Japan.

 

He was employed at Appleton Papers for 43 years. He will be remembered by his family for his barbeque ribs, homemade soups, Chex mix, and the ability to fix anything.

 

Alice was employed as a seamstress at Geenen’s Department Store and in retail sales at Gloudeman’s. Her family and friends will always hold fond memories of her homemade pies, handmade quilts, and embroidered dishtowels. Alice was an active member of the Women’s Guild at Faith Lutheran, where her homemade mini-pies were one of the hottest selling items at their annual fall bazaar.

 

Donald and Alice are survived by their children, Leslie of Long Lake, Minn., Keith (Nancy) of Appleton, Wis., Kathy (David) Pitcher of Mason City, Wayne of Iowa City; eight grandchildren, Jessica Bowers of Milwaukee, Wis., Andrew Bowers of Milwaukee, Wis., Marcia (Jon) Schraa of Oshkosh, Wis., Jason Bowers of Appleton, Wis., Joe Bowers of Oshkosh, Wis., Scott Pitcher of Forest City, Suzanne Pitcher of Mason City, Melissa (William) Lawless of Mason City; and one great-grandson, Ryan Schraa, of Oshkosh. MARBLE ROCK — Obert Allen Stromley, of 205 River St. North, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

 

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 428 W. Walnut in Manly, with Pastor Linda Johnson Prestholt and Pastor Patricia Shaw officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Mason City.

 

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Bride Colonial Chapel 110 E. Spring St. in Manly.

 

Memorials may be directed to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly or St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Marble Rock.

 

Obert Allen Stromley was born Sept. 27, 1916, in Mona, the son of Christian and Nelina (Johnson) Stromley. Obert attended Somber Lutheran School, Mona, and Lyle Community School. He farmed with his father until moving to Minneapolis, Minn., where he attended Dunwoody Institute for body and fender work.

 

Obert was united in marriage to DeAlda Burdella Anderson on July 26, 1943, at the Central Lutheran Church in Minneapolis; to this union five children were born. In 1946, the family moved from the Twin Cities to Manly, where he owned and operated the Manly Motor Co., which expanded to selling boats and motors.

 

After retirement in 1978, Obert enjoyed the craft of woodworking. He would travel around to craft shows selling his assorted woodworking crafts. Obert was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Manly, where he served as president on the church council, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, and a past member of Manly City Council.

 

He loved dancing, fishing, camping, traveling south for the winter and north for the summer to their lake home on Lake Jefferson in Minnesota. Obert’s greatest love was spending time with his family and friends.

 

Obert is survived by his children, Richard (Pat) Stromley of Mason City, Deanna Stromley of Eden Prairie, Minn., Duane (Daphne) Stromley of Manly, John Stromley of Burlington, and Janice (Gary) Marken of Manly; grandchildren Randall (Kris) Stromley of Des Moines, Robert Stromley and fiancee, Kristi Tabbert, of Mason City, Dawn (Scott) Bentten of Lisbon, N.D., Danita (Travis) Ostrom of Grand Forks, N.D., Andrew (Amie) Marken of Manly, Sara Marken of Manly, and her special friend, Travis Dunbar, of Mason City; great-grandchildren, Abigail, Samuel and Claire Stromley, Hunter and Isac Bentten; brothers and sisters, Reuben (Helen) Stromley, Esther Nelson, Rodney (Wilma) Stromley, Wayne (Linda) Stromley, Mike Stromley, Marg (Dean) Saathoff, Ardith, Barbara, and Rachael; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Stromley, Velma (Don) Roberts, Joy (LaVern) Warner, Arlene (Leo) Martie, Norma Streich, Charlotte Cobeen and (Bob Thoen); brother-in-law, Millard (Cynthia) Anderson.

DaeShawn Marquis Rodriguez

 

MASON CITY — DaeShawn Marquis Rodriguez, seven-week-old beloved son of SaNisa Rodriguez, of 104 N. Jefferson Ave. in Mason City, died silently in his sleep on Monday afternoon (Nov. 27, 2006).

 

DaeShawn’s funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with Elect Lady Yavonne Jones and Pastor Paul Hasel officiating. Cremation will follow the service in the care of Cremation Services of North Iowa and Fullerton Funeral Homes.

 

The family will greet relatives and friends from 8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning until the time of DaeShawn’s service at Fullerton Funeral Home.

DaeShawn Marquis Rodriguez was born into the welcoming arms of his mother, SaNisa, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City on Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2006. He instantly captured the hearts of all his family members!

 

SaNisa claims that when DaeShawn became tired or fussy, she could easily calm and comfort him by wrapping him in a soft, cuddly blanket and hum songs to him. At the tender age of seven weeks, DaeShawn was very alert and constantly “checking out” his family and surroundings. He easily made known that he recognized his Mom and bottle through voice and gesture! DaeShawn’s smile and baby giggle was infectious to all who were near him. He recently delighted in the new experiences of a swing and trying a small amount of mashed potatoes and turkey juice on Thanksgiving Day.

 

DaeShawn will be an angel forever and cherished in the hearts and minds of those who shared in his short life.

 

He is survived by his loving mother, SaNisa Rodriguez, of Mason City; his grandparents, Gloria Rodriguez of Mason City and Timothy Bekish Sr. of Des Moines; his great-grandmother, Joann Bekish, of Des Moines; and his aunts and uncles, Timothy Rodriguez II, Laurissa, Tamisha, Iesha, Layesha, Charlessa, A’liyah, Tre’Devonte, and Keegan Bekish. DaeShawn will also be dearly missed by numerous great-aunts and uncles, cousins and other relatives and friends.

 

Preceding DaeShawn in death are his great-grandparents, Guadelupe and Maria Rodriguez; and his great-grandfather, Chester Greenup Sr.

Willis Baldwin


 

CHARLES CITY — Willis Baldwin, 83, of Charles City, died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2006) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

 

A funeral Mass for Willis Baldwin will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Carl Ries celebrating the Mass. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Military honors will be conducted by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

 

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a vigil Scriptural service at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the Mass.

 

Willis “Willie” Neal Baldwin was born March 7, 1923, at Charles City, the son of Edmond and Faith (Day) Baldwin. He graduated in 1941 from Charles City High School where he played on the basketball and track teams. Willie proudly served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946.

 

On April 16, 1953, he was united in marriage to Marlys Carpenter at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in New Hampton. He worked for 50 years at the Oliver/White Farm Equipment company where he was a tool designer. Willie was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, the VFW, American Legion, Moose Lodge and the YMCA.

 

His interests included roller skating and photography in his early years, fishing, golfing, playing cards and ping pong, bird watching, cartoon illustrating and bowling, having been inducted into the Charles City Men’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame. Willie also redesigned the City Improvement Association clock in Central Park.

 

He always enjoyed his patio and took special pride in his lawn care. Family was always important to Willie and he looked forward to spending time with them all, especially his grandchildren and great- grandchildren. He always looked forward to taking his family “up north.”

 

Living family members include his wife, Marlys Baldwin, of Charles City; four children, Jeff (Diane) Baldwin of Mason City, Becky Miller of Minnetonka, Minn., Cathy (Kevin) Snow of Rochester, Minn., and Mike (Tina) Baldwin, of Mankato, Minn.; nine grandchildren, Matthew, Stefanie and Steven Baldwin, Erin (Kyle) Mays, Callie and Ryan Miller, Kari Snow, and Sydney and Trevor Baldwin; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas Mays and Raylin Miller; a brother, Dwight Baldwin, of Pennsylvania.; two sisters, Lois Newman of Charles City, and Helen (Roger) Hirsch of Rockwell; and three sisters-in-law, Joy Baldwin of Greeley, Colo., Mary Ann Hebert-Baldwin of Charles City, and Claudette Baldwin of Osage.

Quentin F. Casanova


 

BELLA VISTA, Ark. — Quentin F. Casanova, 82, of Bella Vista, Ark., died Tuesday (Nov. 28, 2006) at Concordia Care Center in Bella Vista, Ark. He was born on June 14, 1924, in St. Paul, Minn., to Frank Casanova and Alice Benechet Casanova.

 

He was raised and educated in Minnesota. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in electrical engineering.

 

Quentin married Kathleen Dustin on Nov. 24, 1948, in St. Paul, Minn. He worked as an electrical engineer until retiring from Consolidated Electric of St. Paul in 1982. They moved to Bella Vista, Ark., in 2002. He was a member of the Bella Vista Community Church.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Yvette Korn and Joann Johnson.

 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Kathleen Casanova, of Bella Vista, Ark.; three daughters, Carol L. Barth and husband, John, of Greene, Mary Wymore and husband, Burton, of Moline, Ill., Kitty A. Eoff of Bella Vista, Ark.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Norman Lincke

 

OSAGE — Norman Lincke, 82, of Osage, died Wednesday (Nov. 29, 2006) at the Faith Home in Osage.

 

Norman was born Aug. 22, 1924, at Mitchell, Iowa, the son of Paul and Abigail (Dodge) Lincke. Norman graduated from Osage High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, landing in Normandy on D-Day. His tour also included Luxemburg, Belgium and Germany. Norman was presented with a Medal of Appreciation from the Ambassador of France.

 

He returned to Osage, where he married Eileen Puettmann on Oct. 9, 1946, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Norman was employed as a mechanic for the Iowa DOT for 36 years. He was a member of the Osage VFW and the Osage American Legion. Norman was an accomplished carpenter and made many pieces of furniture for his family. He enjoyed dancing, fishing, and his grandchildren.

 

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 2, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at the Osage Cemetery with military honors at graveside by Osage VFW Post 7920 and Osage American Legion Post 278.

 

Visitation is from 2:30 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a rosary at 3 p.m.

 

Norman is survived by his wife, Eileen Lincke, of Osage; two daughters, Claudia (Larry) Lacour of Osage and  Donna Adams and friend, Rex Ratcliff, of Hampton; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Stephen Francis Doll

 

Stephen Francis Doll was born July 13, 1931, in Walham, Mass., and passed on to be with his family at 9:35 p.m. on Nov. 28, 2006 at Hospice of North Iowa.

 

Stephen was preceded in death by his father, mother, brother and two sisters.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2, at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. in Mason City, with the Rev. Steve Palo officiating. Interment of her cremated remains will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
