Etta
Josephine
Bysong
was born
to
Beatrice
(Kelsey)
and Max
Bysong,
Oct. 10,
1907, in
rural
Fayette
County,
Iowa,
where
the
family
lived
during
her
childhood
years
except
for a
year in
Canada.
As a
young
woman,
she
worked
in
Marquette
and from
there
moved to
Charles
City
where
she met
Harry
Christopoulos.
They
were
married
on Aug.
14,
1929,
after he
returned
from a
six
month
visit to
his
family
in
Greece.
During
their 52
years
together,
they
often
wondered
how it
could be
possible
that
they
each
found
their
lifetime
love
when one
of them
was born
in a
country
halfway
around
the
world
from the
other.
Harry
started
his
Sweet
Shop and
News
Stand in
1929 and
Etta
worked
there
with him
for
several
years
before
they
closed
the
40-year-old
business
in June
1970.
The
fountain,
popcorn
machine
and
other
furnishings
were
donated
to the
Kinney-Pioneer
Museum,
where
they are
still
enjoyed
and
appreciated
by many.
Etta’s
wish for
her
legacy
was that
her life
and how
she
lived it
would
speak
for
itself.
Surely
that
wish
will be
granted
as her
family,
friends
and
acquaintances
recall
ways in
which
she
touched
their
lives
with her
thoughtfulness,
gracious
manner,
warm
smile,
stimulating
conversation,
caring
heart,
beautiful
handwriting,
and
“green
thumb.”
She was
very
appreciative
of the
loving
care-givers
at the
IOOF
Home, as
well as
of the
services
provided
by
Telephone
Reassurance,
Meals on
Wheels
and
Hospice,
thus the
suggestion
that
donations
be
forwarded
to any
of them
in her
memory.
Survivors
include
her
daughter,
Elaine
Bennett
of Mason
City;
two
sisters-in-law,
Mrs.
Julie
Bysong
of
Durand,
Wis.,
and Mrs.
Anna
Burns of
Dryden,
Ontario,
Canada;
her
attentive
niece,
Mrs.
Bonnie
Jolly of
St.
Paul,
Minn.;
and
several
other
nieces
and
nephews
in the
U.S. and
Greece.
Etta was
preceded
in death
by her
parents;
her
husband,
Harry in
1982;
her
brothers,
Frank
and Fred
Bysong;
her
sister,
Edna
Davis
Stephens;
and two
sons-in-law,

Harold Carlson
MASON CITY — Harold Carlson, 87, of Rockford, died Tuesday (Oct. 31, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services for Harold Carlson will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Rockford. Pastor Chuck Wallace will officiate. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery at Rockford. Military honors will be conducted at the graveside by Walker-Graper Post 338 American Legion of Rockford.
Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Carlson home, 410 W. Main Ave., Rockford. The visitation will continue at the church an hour prior to the service.
Harold Howard Carlson was born on June 19, 1919, in Hadley, Minn., the son of Soren and Gertrude (Effamsen) Carlson. His parents were direct immigrants of Denmark and moved to Marietta, Minn., where Harold graduated from the Marietta High School in 1937.
His father owned several creameries and Harold worked with his father in the business until he went to college. Harold graduated from Iowa State University in Ames in 1939 with a degree in dairy industries. After graduation, he returned to Marietta to work with his father.
On Dec. 31, 1941, Harold was united in marriage to Neola Marie Slininger and to this union three children were born: Sharon, Tom and Bruce. Neola passed away in November of 1969. Harold was inducted into the Army Air Force on July 10, 1942, and received an honorable discharge on Nov. 19, 1945. He returned home to Marietta to again work in the dairy business with his father until he became the creamery manager in Rockford.
He earned several state awards for Master Craftsman in the Art and Science of Butter Making. When the creamery closed, Harold and Neola operated the local drug store in Rockford. The store had the town’s only soda fountain and he became known as “Zeke” to the locals. Nearly every child in the area was treated to some kind of ice cream/soda concoction at the counter.
Over the years, Harold was delighted to hear from some of his old customers that wanted to know exactly how to make “real vanilla phosphates” for their own children. Harold and Neola sold the drug store and moved to Mason City, where he became the ice cream maker for Birdsall’s.
Harold was united in marriage on November 5, 1970, to Marcella (Drury) Carlson and embraced her three children into his life: Janice, Deanna, and Marilyn. He took up golfing at the age of 60 and it became his passion. Weather permitting, he golfed nearly every day until this past season, when his health prevented him from hitting the course. He had a lifelong love of music, playing the trombone in the Marietta Community Band as it traveled from town to town on hayracks in the 1930s. He loved big-band music, dancing, traveling, playing cards and spending time with family. Until his health prevented it, he filled the Wednesday 4-6 p.m. slot as an announcer at KCMR Radio for nearly 15 years. He was active in his church and community, serving on boards and committees throughout his adult life.
Harold is survived by his wife of nearly 36 years, Marcella; six children, Sharon (Earl) Gwin, Tom Carlson, Janice (Russell) Kornegor, Deanna (Jim) Mallo, Bruce (Terry) Carlson, and Marilyn (Charles) Johnson; 16 grandchildren, Kimberly (Clarence) Elford-Wiley, Jamie (Natalie) Gwin, Dustin (Lillian) Gwin, Kandice (Darrin) Gwin-Cassidy, Whitney (Chris) Lacour, Cody (Monica) Carlson, Kristi (Neil) Fullerton, Rachel (Brad) Schultz, George Kornegor, Matt (Susan) Kornegor, Jaimie (Jon) Groven, Jacob (Darci Hillman) Mallo, Austin (Lizzie Young) Carlson, Spencer Carlson, Lucas Johnson and Taylor Johnson; 11 great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Eva (Paul) Ruud, Ruth (Lyle) Olson and Martha (Dennis) Hatfield; and a sister-in-law, Jane (David) Carlson.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Neola; and three brothers, Art, Carl and David.

Etta J. Christopoulos
MASON CITY — Etta J. Christopoulos, 99, of Mason City, died Sunday (Oct. 29, 2006) at the IOOF Home.
Funeral services for Etta will be held at 10:30 a.m. today (Nov. 2, 2006) at the Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Kathy Graves of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Visitation was held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday (Nov. 1, 2006) at Major Erickson Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to Telephone Reassurance, Meals on Wheels and Hospice of North Iowa.
Etta Josephine Bysong was born to Beatrice (Kelsey) and Max Bysong on Oct. 10, 1907, in rural Fayette County, Iowa, where the family lived during her childhood years except for a year in Canada. As a young woman, she worked in Marquette and from there moved to Charles City, where she met Harry Christopoulos. They were married on Aug. 14, 1929, after he returned from a six-month visit to his family in Greece.
During their 52 years together, they often wondered how it could be possible that they each found their lifetime love when one of them was born in a country half way around the world from the other.
Harry started his Sweet Shop and News Stand in 1929 and Etta worked there with him for several years before they closed the 40-year-old business in June 1970. The fountain, popcorn machine and other furnishings were donated to the Kinney-Pioneer Museum, where they are still enjoyed and appreciated by many.
Etta’s wish for her legacy was that her life and how she lived it would speak for itself. Surely that wish will be granted as her family, friends and acquaintances recall ways in which she touched their lives with her thoughtfulness, gracious manner, warm smile, stimulating conversation, caring heart, beautiful handwriting and “green thumb.” She was very appreciative of the loving care-givers at the IOOF Home, as well as of the services provided by Telephone Reassurance, Meals on Wheels and Hospice, thus the suggestion that donations be forwarded to any of them in her memory.
Survivors include her daughter, Elaine Bennett of Mason City; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Julie Bysong of Durand, Wis., and Mrs. Anna Burns of Dryden, Ontario, Canada; her attentive niece, Mrs. Bonnie Jolly of St. Paul, Minn.; and several other nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Greece.
Etta was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harry, in 1982; her brothers, Frank and Fred Bysong; her sister, Edna Davis Stephens; and two sons-in-law, William (Bill) Mahone and James (Jim) Bennett Sr.
