Leo Ellingston

BELMOND — Leo R. Ellingston, 77, of Belmond, died Saturday (Nov. 4, 2006) at his home.

Funeral services for Leo R. Ellingston will be held at 10:30 a.m. today at the St. Olaf Lutheran Church, west of Belmond. Pastor Lowell H. Halvorson will officiate. Burial will take place in the St. Olaf Cemetery.

Visitation for Leo R. Ellingston was held from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 5, 2006, at the Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond and one hour prior to services at the church.

Leo Robert, the son of Elling and Nettie (Ulstad) Ellingston was born on April 4, 1929, west of Belmond. He grew up in the St. Olaf area where he attended country schools. Leo then attended and graduated from the Belmond High School in 1947. After high school, Leo began farming. In 1951, Leo joined the U.S. Army and served in Germany during the Korean Conflict.

Leo was united in marriage to Opal Bogan on Dec. 7, 1974, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond.

The couple lived their entire married life in the Belmond area where they farmed. Leo retired from farming in 1992.

Leo is remembered as a meticulous farmer who treasured the times he spent with his grandchildren.

Leo was a life-long member of the St. Olaf Lutheran Church near Belmond, where he was baptized and confirmed.

Leo is survived by his wife, Opal; children, Curtis Bogan and wife, Louie, of Fort Worth, Texas, Bryan Bogan and wife, Kathy, of Arlington, Texas, Marna Bogan of Smyrna, Ga.; five grandchildren: Irene, Robert, Regina, Brenda and Bethney; one great-grandchild, Madeline Jo; a brother, Raymond and wife, Rebecca Ellingston of Belmond; two sisters, Eunice and husband, Lloyd Christenson, of Belmond, Avis Hopkey of Belmond; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, and three sisters, Maxine, Virgil, Bernice.

Sgt. 1st Class Shirlee Jean Gardinier

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Sgt. 1st Class Shirlee Jean Gardinier, 74, United States Army (Retired) of Spring Valley West died on Thursday (Nov. 2 2006.)

A joyful celebration of Sgt. 1st Class Gardinier’s life will be held at the family home in Columbia on Nov. 25, 2006, Thanksgiving weekend. Interment services will be held in Towson, Md., at a later date.

Remembrances in tribute to a life well lived may be made to Sister Care of Columbia, S.C.

Janice A. ‘Jan’ Arndorfer

HAMPTON — Funeral service for Janice A. “Jan” Arndorfer, 63, of Hampton will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, 2006, at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hampton, with Father Jim Miller officiating. Burial will be in the Hampton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton with a scripture service at 7:30 p.m.

Janice A. “Jan” Arndorfer, 63, of Hampton, passed away Sunday (Nov. 5, 2006) at the Franklin General Hospital- Hospice in Hampton. She was born on Sept. 22, 1943, in Buffalo Center, Iowa, to Jasper and Annie (Hunt) Dohlman. Jan graduated from Buffalo Center High School and attended secretarial school, earning her secretarial certificate.

She married David John Arndorfer on June 22, 1963, in Britt, Iowa. Jan was a childcare provider for 42 years. She had the good fortune of touching, nurturing, and teaching many children through the years. It was her mission in life to provide an abundance of love and guidance to inspire and motivate them to excel and be all that they could be.

Jan was a member of Franklin General Hospital Auxiliary, Mother’s Club, and Card Club. She was a lifelong member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Jan was a huge supporter of school events and activities and continued to attend many sporting events and extra curricular activities long after her own children had graduated. She was also an avid Hawkeye fan and supported the football program and attended most of the Iowa home games for the past 18 years.

She enjoyed bowling for many years and loved to attend the movie theater when the new movies came out.

Jan is survived by her six children: daughter, Teresa Arndorfer of Waukesha, Wis.; daughter, Dawn and husband Chris Rohrs, of Independence, Mo.; son, Michael “Arnie” and wife Diana “Dee” Arndorfer, of Hampton; daughter, Pamela “Pam” and husband, James Arndorfer of Green Bay, Wis., daughter, Carol and husband, Rodney Frike, of Blue Springs, Mo.; son, Nicholas “Nick” and wife, Amy Arndorfer, of Grain Valley, Mo.; 10 grandchildren: Skylar, Malaina, Chase, Connor, Brock, Ashton, Darien, Dalton, Kierra, and Lexi; brother, Henry “Hank” Dohlman of Buffalo Center; sister, Dorothy “Dort” and husband, ElDean Madetzke of Hampton; sister, Sharon and husband, Vernon Meinberg, of Hampton; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, David.

Jan will be greatly missed by her family, friends, and all of the children, whose lives she touched and inspired.

KANAWHA — Clarence N. Abbas, 90, of Kanawha died Monday (Nov. 6, 2006) at his home in Kanawha.

Eugene R. Krieger

ONSLOW — Eugene R. Krieger, 78, of Onslow, died Friday (Nov. 3, 2006) at the Shady Rest Care Center in Cascade, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 7, 2006, at Zion American Lutheran Church, Wyoming, with the Rev. Timothy Miller officiating. Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9 at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, Iowa, with military honors.

Visitation was held Monday Nov. 6, 2006, at Lahey Funeral Home in Wyoming.

Memorials may be given to the Zion American Lutheran Church, Wyoming, or Hospice of Dubuque.

Eugene was born on Dec. 28, 1927, in Mason City, Iowa, son of Richard and Ida (Albers) Krieger. He received a degree in chemical engineering from Iowa State University. He married Ileta P. Brown on Jan. 6, 1952, in Mason City, Iowa.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and the Korean War as a radioman and a machine gunner. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

He was an environmental control engineer for Dubuque Pack and FDL, retiring in 1992.

He was a member of Zion American Lutheran Church, Wyoming, and was a Master Gardener, and had served as a secretary for the Republican Party in Jones County.

He is survived by his wife, Ileta Krieger, Onslow; five sons, Curtis (Cathy) Krieger, Mason City, Richard (Cheryl) Krieger, Virginia Beach, Va., Kevin (Cathy) Krieger, Auburn, Neb., Gregory (Donna) Krieger, Hazel Green, Wis., and Eric Krieger, Dubuque; 15 grandchildren, one great-grandson; two sisters, Dorothy (Victor) Wenger, Onalaska, Wis., and Gretchen (Delmar) Sparks, Richfield, Wash.; and two brothers, Roland (Pat) Krieger and Dennis (Diana) Krieger, both of Iowa Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Margaret McCabe

GILBERT, Ariz. — It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret M. McCabe on October 31, 2006, due to complications of Alzheimer’s.

Margaret was born on July 4, 1925, in Duluth, Minn., the daughter of the late Catherine Callahan Gruesen and Dr. Joseph Gruesen. She was a graduate of Denfield High School, Duluth, Minn., and graduated with nursing honors from St. Scholastica College in Duluth.

She married the late Col. Lyle S. McCabe in June 1949, resided in Virginia, Minn., and moved to Mason City, Iowa in 1965.

Margaret and her late husband retired in Germantown, Tenn., in 1992.

Her sons Michael and Joseph, her husband Lyle, along with her parents and a brother, John J. Gruesen, preceded her in death.

She is survived by four daughters, Maureen Bidasolo and her husband Mike of Sisters, Ore., Colleen McCabe-Bricklin of Crestone, Colo., Kathleen (Trinka) Sterland and her husband Scott of Gilbert, Ariz., and Margaret Fulcher and her husband, Chuck, of Carson City, Nev., two sons, Stephen A. McCabe and his wife Anita of Germantown,Tenn., Patrick L. McCabe and his wife Susan of Broomfield, Colo.; 12 grandchildren, Meahgan, Molly, Michael, Jonathan, Ryan, Grant, Levi, Tanner, Christopher, Sarah, Erin, and Maggie; and one great-grandchild, Brady Conner.

She also leaves her sister, Barbara Gruesen Brown, and her brother-in-law, William T. Brown, of Memphis,Tenn., and their six children, and a brother, Thomas Gruesen of Calif., and his four children.

Margaret had an active nursing career and dedicated her life to helping others. She used her nursing skills to assist numerous non-profit organizations including the National Red Cross, especially with the bloodmobile project.

She was also very active in her church, especially with The Altar Society. She loved her family, knitting, gardening, swimming, and was a fabulous baker.

Her memorial will be held at 11 a.m, on Tuesday Nov. 21 at Our Lady of Perpetual Health in Germantown, Tenn.

The burial will be in Arlington, Va.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers remembrances be made in honor and memory of Margaret McCabe to: Page Robbins Adult Day Care Center, 1961 S. Houston Levee, Collierville, TN 38017.

James R. Egner

WAVERLY — James R. Egner, 80, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Monday (Nov. 6, 2006) at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.

James was born on Nov. 10, 1925, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Gale Mercer and Helen (Raebel) Egner. He attended East High School and Gates Business College.

 He served in the Navy from 1943-1946. He was united in marriage to Allie Staples in San Francisco, Calif., on Dec. 1, 1945. He had worked as the director of environmental services and later as a consultant with Mercy Hospital in Des Moines. He retired in 1990.

 He is survived by his wife, Allie, of Waverly; his daughter, Leslie (Randy) Morris, of Waverly; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; one brother, Fritz (Peggy) Egner of Pensacola, Fla.

Clarence N. Abbas

 

KANAWHA — Clarence N. Abbas (also known as “Tanky,” “Bud” or “Nick”), 90, of Kanawha, passed away Monday (Nov. 6, 2006) at his home in Kanawha.

 

Funeral services for Clarence Abbas will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, at the United Methodist Church in Kanawha with the Rev. Cynthia Morrison officiating. Burial will be in Amsterdam Township Cemetery near Kanawha.

Clarence, one of nine children born to Daniel Abbas and Nancy Christians, was born on Sunday, June 4, 1916, on the family farm one mile south and one half mile east of Kanawha. He attended the country school three miles south of Kanawha through the eighth grade. Four years later, he graduated from Kanawha High School at the age of 16.

 

In 1936, Clarence was united in marriage with Vera Maddick. The couple had one son, Larry, born three years later.

 

Clarence and Vera farmed in Wright County until 1970 when they moved to Kanawha. He was a Pioneer Seed dealer for 42 years and was also a dealer for Hy-Line chickens. Clarence thoroughly loved his jobs.

 

For many years, the couple spent every winter at Pine-to-Palm Park in Weslaco, Texas. He enjoyed traveling, antiquing and collecting old toys.

 

Clarence enjoyed fishing and sports; at one time he had a young men’s kitten ball team and a bowling team. He also enjoyed good music, especially polka music, and doing nice things for people in need. He claimed he had about 150 of the best friends anyone could wish for.

 

Clarence was baptized at the Kanawha Christian Reformed Church and later joined the United Methodist Church in Kanawha. His joy was reading the Bible daily and in the past he enjoyed teaching the young folks society.

 

Clarence is survived by his wife of 70 years Vera; son Larry and his wife, Kathleen of Kanawha; three grandchildren, Kurt Abbas and his wife, Kara, and their two children, Kristen Keller and her husband, David, and their two children, and Nicholas Abbas and his daughter; numerous nieces and nephews.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel and Nancy Abbas; four brothers, Fred, Anno, Chris and George; and four sisters, Grace Veldhouse, Tena Peters, Bena Trenary and Faye Swyter.

VICTORIA, Minn. — Mary Jane Johnson, age 59, of Victoria, Minn., died Monday (Nov. 6, 2006).

 

A Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Victoria Catholic Church, 8228 Victoria Drive, Victoria, Minn. Visitation is 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a prayer service at 5:30 p.m. at the Bertas Funeral Home, 200 W. Third St. Chaska, Minn., and also one hour prior to the service at church. Lawrence Hultman

 

OSAGE — Lawrence Hultman, 88, of Osage, died Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2006) at the Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Osage.

 

Lawrence was born March 15, 1918, in Mitchell County, Iowa, the son of Albert and Hazel (Voaklander) Hultman. He graduated from Little Cedar High School in 1936. On Sept. 16, 1939, Lawrence married Lucille Mandler in Osage. He was a self-employed truck driver and farmed near Little Cedar until retiring and moving to Osage in 1982. Lawrence was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed playing cards, going to the casinos, and was a history buff.

 

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Little Cedar Cemetery in Little Cedar.

 

Visitation is from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a rosary at 4:45 p.m. and a Scripture service at 6:30 p.m.

 

Lawrence is survived by his wife, Lucille Hultman of Osage; a daughter, Janice (Gary) Mauer, of Oskaloosa; a son, Roger (Mary) Hultman of Austin, Minn.; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandson.

George T. Paulson


 

CHARLES CITY — George T. Paulson, 94, of 101 Hilltop Drive, Charles City, died Monday, (Nov. 6, 2006) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 S. Main St. in Charles City, with the Rev. Dennis Niezwaag officiating. Interment will be in Sunnyside Memory Gardens in Charles City. Military rites will be accorded by the Charles City Ceremonial Unit.

 

The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton-Hage Funeral Home, 401 Blunt St. in Charles City. The visitation will continue one hour prior to George’s services Thursday at the church.

George T. Paulson was born in Fargo, N.D., the oldest of six children to Peter and Isabella (Temperley) Paulson. When he was two years old, the family moved to Aitkin, Minn., where George received his education in the schools of Aitkin County. In 1933 and 1934, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in California. George moved to Iowa in 1934, where he worked for farmers in the area, picking corn by hand. He later went to work for the Walsh Manufacturing Co. in Charles City as a shipping and receiving clerk, retiring in 1977 after 36 years with the company. In World War II, George served in the weapons section of the U.S. Army engineers at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

 

On May 14, 1938, George was united in marriage to Ila Mae Vorhes in Waterloo. One son, Raymond Lee, was born to them. Ila died on April 27, 1960. On July 15, 1961, he was united in marriage to Elnora (Larson) Villnow in Plato, Minn.

 

George was a member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he was an usher, served on the evangelism board and delivered Sunday church bulletins to the nursing homes. George was a life member of the American Legion, where he held the local positions of historian, commander and adjutant for 34 years. For 23 years, George served on the honor squad, folding hundreds of flags for military funerals, and also worked for years on the membership committee as well as being the oratorical chairman. He served as the American Legion fourth district commander, the district oratorical, the national security committee and was an Iowa department vice-commander. George was a member of Kiwanis, Amvets, 40 et 8, Senior Citizens, Heritage Club, a life member of the Floyd County Historical Society, a past member of the Toastmasters and Odd Fellows.

 

In retirement, he enjoyed being with family and friends, especially the grandchildren. George also enjoyed working in the garden and yard, playing cribbage and doing volunteer work with the American Legion, meals on wheels, Kiwanis and the Emerson toy program. He was commissioner at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital for nine years, where for many years he dressed as Santa Claus for the employees’ children.

 

George was known as an authority on American flag etiquette, and did many flag programs for schools and other organizations. In 1990, he was chosen the Charles City Man of the Year. In November 2000, a veteran’s museum was opened in Branson, Mo., within the museum are 50 life-size bronze statues of Army veterans from World War II, representing all 50 states. George Paulson represents the state of Iowa, which made George feel very humble, but proud his name was used. In November 2003, George was honored for 44 years of service, placing flag holders on veterans gravesites and making sure on every Memorial Day there were flags placed on the graves.

 

George is survived by his wife, Elnora; one son Raymond (Diann) Paulson, of Hugo, Minn.; one stepdaughter, Corinne (Gerald) Schauer of Pine River, Minn.; one stepson, Robert Villnow, of Glencoe, Minn.; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; 13 stepgreat-grandchildren and stepgreat-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by one sister, Elsie Paulson of St. Paul, Minn.; one brother, Peter Paulson, of Aitkin, Minn., and many other relatives and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ila; his parents; two brothers, Clifton and Chester; one sister, Helen Dragovich; and one stepdaughter-in-law, Anita Villnow.

Robert Charles ‘Bob’ McDonough

 

ELIZABETH CITY, N.C. — Robert Charles “Bob” McDonough, 85, of 106 Lisa’s Way, Elizabeth City, N.C., formerly of Rockwell, died Monday (Nov. 6, 2006) at Albemarle Hospital.

 

Mr. McDonough was born Oct. 26, 1921, in Cerro Gordo County in Rockwell. He was the son of the late Michael McDonough and Alice Dougherty McDonough. He was a former employee with the Armour Co. and a member of Holy Family Catholic Church.

 

Survivors include his wife, Florence Dunn McDonough; daughter, Barbara Russel, and her husband, Scott, of Chesapeake, Va.; grandchildren, Molly McCracken and her husband, Matt, Matt Russel and his wife, Mikki, and Hannah Miller and her husband, Justin, and his great-grandson, Robert McCracken.

 

A memorial Mass of resurrection will be held Thursday, Nov. 9, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church with The Very Rev. James Buchholz, V.F., officiating. rite of committal will follow in the church memory garden.

He was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Hampton.

 

He enjoyed sports, was in basketball and softball leagues and enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Chicago Bears.

Carol ‘Joanie’ Duffield

 CHARLES CITY — Funeral services for Carol “Joanie” Duffield, 70, of 5 Bird Circle, Charles City, formerly of Greene, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 9, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. Carol JoAnn Figgins was born Dec. 16, 1935, in rural Pocahontas, a daughter of Val Eugene and Pauline Laura (Craig) Figgins. She died Monday (Nov. 6, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

 She received her education in the Mason City public schools and as a young lady was employed as a nurse’s aide at Mercy Hospital in Mason City. On Sept. 15, 1958, she was united in marriage to James Arthur Duffield in Canton, S.D. In 1964, they made their home in Greene where she was employed by the Candle Shop, Sonny’s, and the Greene Inn. She was last employed by Bill’s Foods until she was forced to retire in 1998 after being diagnosed with cancer.

 Her interests included crocheting, knitting and going to rummage sales.

 Her family, especially her grandchildren, were her life and joy. She walked the Relay For Life every year up to the end.

 Living family members include her loving husband, Jim, of Charles City; her daughter, Connie (Dan) Glandon, of Charles City, three sons, Terry Taylor of Springfield, Ore., Del Duffield of Charles City, David (Debra) Duffield of San Diego, Calif.; six grandchildren, Cody Duffield, Lindsey Glandon, Joshua Duffield, Cassandra Glandon, Jesse Duffield and Jason Glandon; her sister, Betty (Gordon) Pennington, of Black Water, Mo.; sister-in-law, Martha Starkey, of Charles City, and daughter-in-law, Karen Hughes, of Osage.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and one son, Douglas James Duffield; and one brother, Bill Figgins.

The Rev. Paul James Evans

CHARLES CITY — The Rev. Paul James Evans, 89, of 400 Blunt St. in Charles City, died Tuesday afternoon (Nov. 7, 2006) at his residence.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Monsignor James Barta and the Rev. Jon M. Seda officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 123 Second St. S.E. in Mason City, with a Scripture vigil service and the reciting of the rosary beginning at 6:30 p.m. The visitation will continue one hour prior to the Rev. Evans’ service at the church.

Paul James Evans was born on Dec. 4, 1916, in Mason City, to Claude Theodore and Bridget Vivian (Duffy) Evans. He was the fourth of eight children born to his parents.

Paul was educated in the Mason City schools. During his high school years, Paul enjoyed participating in sports and was among the graduates in the class of 1934.

Following high school, Paul attended Columbia College (Loras) in Dubuque where he achieved his B.A. degree in philosophy. He was also the football coach at Columbia College during this time. He continued his education and direction in life entering St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, M.D. Upon completion of his degree in 1942, Paul was ordained as the Rev. Paul James Evans by Archbishop Beckman in Dubuque.

Father Evans was extremely proud of his life in the priesthood and served in parishes (all in Iowa) at Fairbanks, the Cathedral in Dubuque, Waukon, Waverly, Reilly Ridge, Balltown, Van Horn, Gilbert, Greene, New Haven and Charles City. He formally retired in 1988 and continued to live in Charles City to be near family.

The Rev. Paul James Evans was the first graduate of Holy Family Catholic High School to become an ordained priest. Throughout his life, his home church, Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City, was very special to him.

Some of Father Evans’ interests and hobbies included golfing, collecting antiques, gardening, bird watching, especially hawks, his fondness for reading history and theology publications, playing cards, especially “500,” traveling, sight-seeing and cheering for the Cubs and White Sox baseball teams. Father Evans also treasured the time he spent listening to classical music, especially Mozart and Beethoven, solving home plumbing problems and crafting woodwork items.

The Rev. Paul J. Evans is survived by his soul mate and companion of 54 years, Mary Zegan, of Charles City; his sisters, Ellen (George) Huber of Mason City, Mary Etta Rees of Mesa, Ariz., and Ruth Ann McGowan of Mason City; his caregivers, Mary Cross and Carrie Mauter; and numerous other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Preceding the Rev. Paul Evans in death are his parents, Claude and Bridget Evans; his four brothers, Morris, Robert, Lorin and John Evans; his two sisters-in-law, Patricia Evans and Violet Evans; his three brothers-in-law, John Brunson, Dale Rees and James McGowan Sr.; and one niece, Barbara Brunson Kelp.

Philip W. Olson

GARNER — Philip W. Olson, 60, of Garner, died Monday (Oct. 23, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Philip Wayne Olson, the son of Harvey and Asa “Ruth” (Ward) Olson, was born June 21, 1946, at New Richmond, Wis. He attended school at Richmond. Philip served his country in the United States Navy during Vietnam. Following his honorable discharge he returned home to Wisconsin.

On Dec. 4, 1976, he married Doreen M. Schaumberg at the Methodist church in St. Louis Park, Minn. They lived in the Twin Cities for 20 years, Amery, Wis., for seven years and in 2003 moved to Garner. Phil was employed as a handyman for many years. He enjoyed watching John Wayne movies, mowing lawn and hunting.

He was a lifetime member of the Garner VFW and American Legion and served in the Garner Veterans Ceremonial Unit.

Carl was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Clear Lake, the son of Danish immigrants, Chris and Martha (Saling) Larsen. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1939. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942, and fought in World War II, serving on the USS Denabola ship touring the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and South Pacific.

Carl married Ann Jindrich June 7, 1947, in Swaledale, Iowa. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 27 years, retiring in January 1979. He was proud to say he lived his entire live in Clear Lake.

Carl loved hunting, fishing and gardening; his greatest love was spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling to the renaissance festivals with his sons.

Carl was a member of the Clear Lake VFW, the DAV, National Letter Carriers Association, and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Carl is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann Larsen, of Clear Lake; eight children, Barbara Bentele and her husband, John, Mason City, John Larsen and his wife, Mary, Clear Lake, Katie Virden and her husband, Tim, Cedar Rapids, Julie Tiedemann and her husband, Merle, Mason City, Chris Larsen and his wife, Kristi, Mason City, Matt Larsen and his wife, Sue, Clear Lake, Mary Huey of Medford, Ore., and Jeannette Jones, of Anchorage, Alaska; 24 grandchildren,11 great-grandchildren; sister, Emma Teeter and her husband, Cecil, Lawrence, Kan.; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dale worked as a carpenter and also worked at Hormel for 22 years. He was a faithful member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Lyle, where he served as vice president, council secretary, deacon and trustee. Golfing, fishing and playing pool were his passions.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Virginia Knode; one brother, Marvin Bensend; and an infant sister.

Carl E. Larsen

CLEAR LAKE — Carl E. Larsen, 201 S. Fourth St., Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, surrounded by his loving family.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S. with the Rev. John Tilp officiating.

 Interment will be Saturday in the Clear Lake Cemetery with full military honors conducted by the Clear Lake V.F.W Post 4868.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with a Scripture wake service at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials may be directed to the Carl E. Larsen Memorial Fund.

Carl was born Jan. 12, 1921, in Clear Lake, the son of Danish immigrants Chris and Martha (Saling) Larsen. He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1939. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and fought in World War II, serving on the U.S.S. Denabola Ship touring the North Atlantic, Mediterranean and South Pacific.

Carl married Ann Jindrich on June 7, 1947, in Swaledale. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 27 years, retiring in January 1979. He was proud to say he lived his entire life in Clear Lake. Carl loved hunting, fishing and gardening; his greatest love was spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling to the Renaissance festivals with his sons.

Carl was a member of the Clear Lake V.F.W., the D.A.V., National Letter Carriers Association and the St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

Carl is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ann Larsen, Clear Lake; eight children, Barbara Bentele and her husband, John, of Mason City, John Larsen and his wife, Mary, of Clear Lake, Katie Virden and her husband, Tim, of Cedar Rapids, Julie Tiedemann and her husband, Merle, of Mason City, Chris Larsen and his wife, Kristi, of Mason City, Matt Larsen and his wife, Sue, of Clear Lake, Mary Huey, of Medford, Ore., Jeannette Jones, of Anchorage, Alaska; 24 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Emma Teeter and her husband, Cecil, of Lawrence, Kansas; along with several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

 Carl was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Jim and Paul Larsen; sister, Marie; and son-in-law, Mike Jones.

MASON CITY — Lawrence M. “Larry” Mason, 66, of Mason City, died Thursday (Nov. 9, 2006) at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Stanley J. Patterson

 

MASON CITY — Stanley J. Patterson, 89, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Mason City, died Wednesday (Nov. 8, 2006) at Montclair Nursing & Rehab Center in Omaha, Neb.

 

Stan was born on Aug. 12, 1917, in Algona, the son of Harold A. and Gusta E. Patterson. He graduated from St. Cecilia’s Academy in 1936. He attended Iowa State College and graduated from Hamilton Business College in 1941.

 

He served as a staff sergeant in the 365th Squadron of the 305th Bomb Group of the U.S. Air Corps as a medical administrative non-com for four years. He was honorably discharged in October of 1945. He then went to work for the Iowa Employment Security Commission as a veteran’s employment placement specialist for 10 years, at which time he transferred to a position as unemployment insurance tax auditor. Twice, Stan received the Spirit of America award from the IRS. He retired March 15, 1985.

 

He served as adjutant for Clausen-Worden Post of the American Legion. He was responsible for the military burial services of 200 bodies of World War II veterans that were returned to Mason City. He also was the Chef De Gare of La Societe Forty et 8 Chevaux. Stan was proud of the fact that while involved with this group, they provided the lighting for Roosevelt Field.

 

Stan was also a lifetime member of the American Legion. A fourth degree Knight, Stan had been a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1946. He held the title of state and district treasurer in the International Association of Personnel in Employment Security for two years. As a member of Holy Family Catholic church, he was a lay distributor and head usher for 25 years.

 

After his retirement, Stan had been active in SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) since 1984. For 10 years he helped senior citizens file their income tax reports, earning recognition from AARP for his efforts. Mr. Patterson also served on the Mason City Civil Service Commission for six years, chairing the commission for three of those years. He received letters of recognition from the governor of Iowa and the mayor of Mason City for his years of civil service to the community.

 

Stan was preceded in death by wives, Grace and Vivian; and by a daughter, Patricia Ann.

 

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Mary Patterson, of Omaha; grandchildren, Stephen Patterson and wife, Dana, David Patterson and wife, Angela, Abigail Blair and husband, Mark; and five great-grandchildren.

 

Private services are planned, followed by interment at Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

 

Memorials are suggested to the Knights of Columbus or to Holy Family Catholic Church in Mason City.

Pauline J. Vala

 

CHARLES CITY — Pauline J. Vala, 93, of Charles City, died Thursday (Nov. 9, 2006) at the 11th Street Chautauqua Guest Home in Charles City.

 

A funeral Mass for Pauline Vala will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City. Monsignor Stanley J. Hayek will celebrate the Mass. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Roseville.

 

Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Hauser Funeral Home, 1205 S. Main in Charles City, with a rosary to be recited at 4:30 p.m. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the Mass on Monday.

Beth A. Hofman

 

MASON CITY — Beth A. Hofman, 46, of 10 Ridge Road N.E., died Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

 

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 302 Fifth St. S.E., with the Rev. Harry Koelker and the Rev. David Kucera officiating. Inurnment services will be held at a later date.

 

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Nov. 10, 2006, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.

 

Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

 

Beth was born June 4, 1960, in Hoven, S.D., the daughter of Oscar and Anna Marie (Rausch) Roesler. She graduated from Hoven High School then attended Black Hills State College in Spearfish, South Dakota.

 

Beth married Hal Hofman on Sept. 25, 1982, in Hoven. The Hofmans moved to Mason City in 1997.

 

Beth had a deep faith and thoroughly enjoyed serving her church, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church.

 

She enjoyed volunteering and was a proud mother of her two boys, Jeremy and Adam.

 

Beth is survived by her husband, Hal, of Mason City; two sons, Jeremy, of Ames, and Adam, of Mason City; parents, Oscar and Anna Marie Roesler, of Hoven, S.D.; brothers and sisters, Dan Roesler and wife, Marcy, of Mobridge, S.D., Ron Roesler and wife, Maria, of Mobridge, S.D., Deb Libis and husband, Dave, of Mott, N.D., Mary Scherr and husband, Randy, of Ghent, Minn., Dave Roesler and wife, Charlotte, of Salem, S.D., Carol VanDusen and husband, Troy, of Watertown, S.D., Connie Aymar and husband, Dwight, of Miller, S.D.; mother and father-in-law, Harold and Barb Hofman of Beresford, S.D.; brother-in-law, Steve Hofman and wife, Mary, of Madison, S.D.; sister-in-law, Cindy Wockenfuss of Crete, Neb.; many nieces and nephews.

Ronny Arthur Moeller

 

OKOBOJI — Ronny Arthur Moeller, the son of Arthur and Gladys (Simpson) Moeller, was born July 8, 1940, at Spencer. He graduated from Everly High School in 1958.

 

He was united in marriage to Willia Mae Nagel on Oct. 22, 1961, in Hartley. He was employed as a foreman at Iowa Mold and Tool in Garner for many years, and as manager in Ontario, Canada.

 

Ronny participated as an EMT and assisted the police department while living in Britt, Iowa. He spent years at Stylecraft in Milford and at Wal-Mart in Spirit Lake.

 

He enjoyed woodworking and took great pride in building a good portion of his log home in Okoboji. Music was important to Ronny and he enjoyed playing his accordion for family, friends and local nursing homes. He especially liked Polka music. He restored his father’s 1948 John Deere M and was a member of the local John Deere Club.

 

Ronny died on Tuesday (Nov. 7, 2006) at his home in Okoboji.

 

He is survived by his wife, Willia Mae, of Okoboji; daughter, Nancy Knudtson and her husband, Don, of Lake Mills; son, Jeffrey and his wife, Melodee, of Rio Rancho, N.M.; son-in-law, Eric Eppard of Marion; six grandchildren; his mother, Gladys Moeller, of Everly; sisters, Cheryl Whade and her husband, David, of Estherville, and Becky Brockmann and her husband, Don, of Hartley.

 

He is preceded in death by his daughter, Karen Eppard; his grandson, Thomas Knudtson; father, Art Moeller; and father and mother-in-law, Nick and Dora Nagel.

 

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Nov. 10, 2006, at the First Lutheran Church in Milford, with the Rev. Bob Vaage and the Rev. Tim Nappe officiating, with burial in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Everly.

 

Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the Church.

Herbert J. Hemann


 

STACYVILLE — Herbert J. Hemann, 83, died Wednesday (Nov. 8, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center in Osage.

 

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with Monsignor John Hemann and the Rev. David Hemann officiating. Burial will be in Visitation Cemetery in Stacyville.

 

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 10, 2006, at the church, with a rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7 p.m.

 

Herbert Hemann was born on Jan. 12, 1923, in Union Township, Mitchell County, Iowa, to John and Mary (Gerber) Hemann. He was united in marriage to Irene Mueller on Aug. 25, 1948, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Meyer, Iowa. Herbert was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters, and a lifetime member of Visitation Church.

 

He enjoyed farming and hours that were spent in his woodworking shop. Herbert will be remembered for his strong faith, love of his family, work ethic and honesty.

 

Herbert is survived by his wife, Irene, of Stacyville; children, Vivian (Bart) McDonough, of Kellogg, Minn., Steven, of Moravia, Harvey (Diane), of Stacyville, Susan (Jack) VanLaere, of Rockford, Iowa, Norbert (Marybeth), of Stacyville, Leonard (Carol), of Linden, Iowa, Galen (Audrey), of Rose Creek, Minn., Colette (Steve) Koebrick, of Charles City, Maureen (Duane) Wegner, of Eyota, Minn., Nicholas, of Kasson,Minn., Yvonne (Todd) Braun, of Kasson, Minn., Andrew (Patty), of Stacyville, Delores (Kevin) Koster, of St. Ansgar, and Kathleen (Tim) Bruggeman, of St. Ansgar.

 

He was preceded in death by son, Adrian; parents, John and Mary (Gerber) Hemann, and two brothers Clarence and Roman.

ALAMAGORDO, N.M. — Jeanette Fogg, 77, of Alamagordo, N.M., died Saturday (Nov. 4, 2006) at her home.

 

Her body was cremated and no services will be held.

 


 

William ‘Willie’ Neis

 

OSAGE — William “Willie” Neis, 89, of Osage, died Wednesday (Nov. 8, 2006) at Mitchell County Regional Health Center Emergency Room in Osage.

 

Willie was born Sept. 15, 1917, on a farm near Stacyville, the son of Ferdinand and Augusta (Blake) Neis. On Aug. 7, 1946, he married Irene Faas in Stacyville. Willie drove a road grader for the Mitchell County Highway Dept. Following his retirement, Willie enjoyed family gatherings, gardening and being outdoors.

 

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, 2006, at the Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Osage.

 

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a Scripture service at 6:30 p.m. Visitation will be one hour before services on Saturday at the church in Stacyville,

 

Willie is survived by three sons: Robert (Myrna) Neis, of Mason City, Dennis Neis, of Tripoli, and Michael (Carolyn) Neis, of Osage; five sisters, Adelaide (Lloyd) Counsell, of Osage, Rosanna Miller, of Rudd, Frances (Frankie) Hoffman, of Sun City, Calif., Betty Jane (Dick) Conger, of Sequim, Wash., and Arlene Rogers, of Arizona; one brother, Joseph (Imelda) Neis, of Minneapolis, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

 He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Irene, in 1995; an infant son Richard; a daughter Beverly White; a daughter-in-law Satoe Neis; a grandson Rodney White; and two sisters, Angie Brumm and Agnes Brumm.
