Rosalyn ‘Mim’ Hester

CLEAR LAKE — Rosalyn “Mim” Hester, 74, died Friday (Nov. 10, 2006) at Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato, Minn.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. John Tilp of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church officiating.

Family will greet friends one hour before the service.

A second memorial service will held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 21, at the Mankato Lutheran Church in Mankato with Chaplin Sandra Griffin of the Mankato Lutheran Home officiating, where her husband, Kelly, resides. According to her wishes her body was cremated.

Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, at a later date.

Rosalyn was born July 8, 1932, in Mason City, Iowa, the daughter of Otto and Jeanette (Olson) Petersen. She received her education in Clear Lake, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1950.

She married Robert Kienast on Dec. 29, 1950, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Clear Lake. They lived in Osage and then later moved to Clear Lake, where they raised their two children and she taught catechism at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church.

She married Kelly Hester on July 2, 1988, in Las Vegas, Nev. They lived in Eagan, Minn., where she worked at the Highland Chateau Nursing Home in administration until her retirement in 1997. In 2004, she moved to the Primrose Retirement Communities, Mankato, Minn., to be closer to her daughter.

She enjoyed working with the elderly, dancing, and reading. She loved children of all ages; her greatest love was spending time with her grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Kelly Hester, of Mankato, Minn.; her daughter, Roxanne Bergo and her husband, Bryan, of Mankato, Minn.; two grandsons, Jeremy Bergo of Minneapolis, Minn., and Justin Bergo of Mankato, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Deborah Frampton and her husband, Kenneth, of Clear Lake, and their family Brandon Frampton of Iowa City and David Frampton of Clear Lake; two brothers, Burgess Petersen and his wife, Joan, of Cedar Rapids, and Ronald Petersen and his wife, Jackie, of St. Petersburg, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her only son, Reginald Kienast; her parents, her brother, Richard Petersen and his wife, Marlene.

Larry Myers

Larry Myers died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2006) in Sun City West, Arizona. Larry was born Feb. 15, 1934, to Kenneth and Nellie Myers, of Alexander, Iowa. He graduated from Alexander School in 1951.

Larry served in the United States Marine Corps at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, and continued to live overseas in Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Turkey for many years before retiring in Sun City West, Ariz.

Larry is survived by his wife, Mary Beth, of the home; his son, Steve and wife, Rhonda; and grandson, Alexander; his daughter, Tanya Myers; and four brothers, Lon, Kae, Glen and Kent and their families.

Herman Boelman

BELMOND — Herman Boelman, 88, of Belmond, passed away Monday, (Nov. 13, 2006) at the Wright Medical Center in Clarion.

A memorial service for Herman Boelman will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 17, at the First Reformed Church in Alexander with Pastor Philip Arnold officiating. A private burial will take place in the Meservey Cemetery. There will be no viewing as the body has been cremated.

A visitation for Herman Boelman will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the First Reformed Church in Alexander.

Herman Boelman was born Aug. 28, 1918, in Iowa Township, Wright County, on what is now called the Hospital Farm, to Will J. and Titcia (Frohling) Boelman. Herman was united in marriage to Esther Schmidt on Jan. 30, 1941, in Aplington, Iowa.

Herman was an avid sports fan, particularly baseball, softball and track. He was a state official in baseball and softball for 26 years, and enjoyed working with young folks. Herman lived his life trucking, grinding feed, and driving motor homes from 1970 to 1995. He was also a life-long lover of the Chicago Cubs and enjoyed going to his daughter’s ceramic shop and painting every day.

Herman was a former member of the First Reformed Church in Alexander and a member of the Bethany Reformed Church in Belmond. He was connected to teaching in the church for 45 years and was a lay preacher for more than 20 years.

Herman is survived by his three daughters, Judy (Gene) Draper of Alexander, Jo Ann “Nina” (Don) Pals of Mason City, and Anita (Larry) Parks of Latimer; seven grandchildren, Jacki (Alan) Anderson, Ken (Jodi) Draper, Mike (Julie) Draper, Troy (Nichi) Pals, Tony (Tami) Pals, Micki (Jason) Schleisman and Chad (Tammy) Parks; 21 great-grandchildren, Jessi, Savanah, Nathan, Tiara, Hailey, Marissa, Kylie, Jacob, Cody, Boston, Kenyon, Tyler, Cassidy, Tori, Cole, Mason, Jared, Hunter, Adra, Michael and Cooper; two sisters, Dorothy Abbas of Belmond and Ruth Dorenkamp of Clear Lake; two brothers, Bud Boelman of Belmond and Daryl Boelman of Boone; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Esther; one brother; two sisters; three great-grandchildren; and his special friend, Freda.

Margaret M. ‘Dolly’ Finlayson

ROCKWELL — Margaret M. “Dolly” Finlayson, 93, formerly of 117 W. Elm St. in Rockwell, died Wednesday morning (Nov. 15, 2006) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home, where she had resided since August 2005.

The Mass of Christian burial for Dolly will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 305 E. Elm St. in Rockwell, with the Rev. Craig E. Steimel officiating. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Rockwell.

The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Sacred Heart Catholic School Chapel in Rockwell. The rosary will be recited at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Scripture vigil service. The visitation will continue in the school chapel one hour prior to Dolly’s service.

Eva Rebecca Lifshatz

ACKLEY — Eva Rebecca Lifshatz, 92, of Ackley, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2006) at the Ellsworth Hospital in Iowa Falls.

Memorial services for Eva Rebecca Lifshatz will be 2 p.m. today at the Church of the Open Bible in Iowa Falls, with Pastor Herb Kenyon officiating. Inurnment will be at the Aplington Cemetery.

Margaret M. ‘Dolly’ Finlayson

ROCKWELL — Margaret M. “Dolly” Finlayson, 93, formerly of 117 W. Elm St. in Rockwell, died Wednesday morning (Nov. 15, 2006) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home, where she had resided since August of 2005.

Margaret Mary Finlayson was born July 30, 1913, in Burchinal, to Nora (Schiffman) and John Walch.

 

Dolly, as she was fondly known by her family and friends, attended rural schools in the area and graduated among the class of 1932 from St. Joseph High School in Mason City. Following high school, Dolly furthered her education at the St. Joseph Mercy School of Nursing, receiving her R.N. license in 1934.

 

She was employed at the Hampton Hospital and St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Mason City, retiring in 1977.

 

On Sept. 17, 1938, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Rockwell, Dolly was united in marriage to Andrew R. Finlayson. They lived in Hampton for a period of time, then relocated to Rockwell in 1942.

 

Dolly was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild at her church and enjoyed attending the Senior Citizens Center in Rockwell.

 

Dolly is survived by her four nieces, Margaret (James) McLaughlin, of Mason City, Phyllis (Robert) Klatt, of Eagan, Minn., Mary Jo (Don) Benner, of Phoenix, Ariz., and Jean Ann (Steve) Sabo, of Tucson, Ariz.; her two nephews, Richard (Shirley) Fitzgerald, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Dr. Jim Walch. She is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Edna Walch, of Tucson, Ariz., and Geneva Finlayson of Garden Grove, Calif.; and numerous other relatives and friends.

 

Preceding Dolly in death were her husband, Andrew R. “Andy” Finlayson in 1981; her parents, John and Nora Walch; her sister, Inez Conn; her three brothers, Aaron, Clifford and Lawrence Walch; her three sisters-in-law, Emma Finlayson, Kathleen Walch and Loraine Fitzgerald-Haggerty; one brother-in-law, Lavern Finlayson and one nephew, Thomas Fitzgerald.

ST. ANSGAR — Arnold (Arnie) Bublitz, 96, of St. Ansgar, died Tuesday (Nov. 14, 2006) at Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar.

Arnold was born Aug. 9, 1910, son of Reinold and Martha (Diedrich) Bublitz, in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, Iowa.

 

Arnold was united in marriage to Wilma Lange on Oct. 23, 1930. They made their home in Mitchell and Worth counties, farming all their lives, until retiring in 1975 and moving to St. Ansgar, Iowa.

 

Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Wilma; son Duane; three brothers: Wilmer, Harvey and Lawrence; and a grandson, Curtis Bublitz.

 

He is survived by one sister, Elenora Boerjan; son Robert and his wife, Pat, of St. Ansgar; two daughters Shirley and husband, Curtis, Sheets of Iowa City, and Delores and husband, Richard, Trettin of St. Ansgar; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Doris Irene Canny

 

OSAGE — Doris Irene (Penney) Canny, 87, of Osage, passed away peacefully on Thursday (Nov. 16, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center-Hospice Unit in Osage.

 

Doris was born Dec. 7, 1918, at Little Cedar, Iowa, the daughter of Sidney and Helen (Fairbanks) Penney. She graduated from Little Cedar Consolidated School in 1937.

 

On June 17, 1937, Doris was united in marriage to Glen Canny in Mason City. She was a longtime member of the Osage First United Methodist Church, and was a member of the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary.

 

According to Doris’ wishes, a private family service will be held at a later date.

 

Doris is survived by two daughters, Sharon Theobald, of Stacyville, and Diane Canny, of Bloomington, Minn.; a daughter-in-law, Sharon Canny, of Orchard; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Merle (Marge) Penney, of Osage, and Earle (Beverly) Penney, of Little Cedar; and numerous nephews and nieces.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Glen Canny; a son, Ronald Canny; a brother, Vinus “Bill” Penney; and a sister, Mildred “Babe” Canny.

Ramona J. Borseth

 

NORTHWOOD — Ramona J. Borseth, 78, of Northwood, died Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2006) at Manly Nursing and Rehab Center in Manly.

 

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at the Schroeder & Sites Funeral Home in Northwood with the Rev. Barbara Wills officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Oakwood Cemetery, Austin, Minn.

Ramona (Mona) June (Longshore) Borseth was born June 19, 1928, to Leon and June (McLaughlin) Longshore in Ames, the only child in the family.

 

She attended school in Ames for a few years until the family moved to Boone. Mona finished her schooling there in 1946.

 

In the fall of 1946, she started to work for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company as an operator, until September 1952. At that time she married Eugene Borseth and moved to a farm near Northwood. She worked for a time at the telephone office in Northwood until they went dial.

 

Mona was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at First Lutheran Church in 1954. She and her husband raised three children. In 1968, they moved to Northwood where she was receptionist and bookkeeper in the family’s business, Borseth Repair. She retired in 1993.

 

Mona was happy at all her work: telephone, housewife, helping others and assisting her husband with the business.

 

She loved watching her children grow and later her grandchildren whenever they came to visit or she to see them. She also enjoyed gardening, canning and baking. She entered bread in the fair two years, and took the blue ribbon both times.

 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leon and June Longshore; her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Iver and Minnie Borseth; many aunts and uncles, and many dear friends.

 

Ramona is survived by her husband, Eugene; son, Layne and wife, Valerie; their sons Rollie, Glen and his wife, Kaci, and their children Samantha and Madisyn; daughter, Roxann and husband, Keith, Asleson and their son, Blake; son, Lonnie and his wife, Diane, and their son, Caleb.

Dolores Jean Bode

ALGONA — Funeral services for Dolores Jean Bode, 78, of Algona, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday (Nov. 20, 2006) at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona with Father Paul Eisele and the Rev. Mr. Bob Larsen officiating. Interment will be held in Calvary Cemetery in Algona.

Dolores Jean Bode was born on May 22, 1928, in Titonka to William and Teda Tjarks Welhousen. She received her early education in country school in German Township and graduated from Titonka High School in 1945.

Dolores earned her teaching certificate from Waldorf College in Forest City. She taught country school near Titonka, Maple Hill and Lakota.

On July 3, 1952, Dolores was united in marriage to Harold Bode at St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Algona. The couple settled in San Diego, Calif., where Harold was serving in the U.S. Navy. During this time, Dolores was school secretary at El Toyon School in National City, Calif. The couple moved to Algona in 1955, where they farmed in the Plum Creek area north of town.

She returned to teaching and taught elementary school at Wesley, and second grade and junior high science at St. Cecelia School in Algona.

Over the years, Dolores continued her education at Wartburg, Drake, Mankato State and Buena Vista.

Dolores was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church, where she was active in Catholic Daughters of the Americas and New Dimension. She belonged to Plum Creek Homemaker’s Club and Farm Bureau Women’s Association, where she held various offices over the years.

She also enjoyed volunteering for her children’s various school and 4-H activities. Dolores and Harold served together on the Garrigan Music Board and in later years delivered Meals on Wheels. In 1991, they retired and moved into Algona. Her husband, Harold, preceded her in death on Aug. 13, 2005.

Throughout her life, Dolores had a love of learning and finding order for all things. She took time to research topics of interest and enjoyed exploring the various places she visited. Her attention to detail always showed through in her baking, gardening and various house projects. She marveled at the wonders of nature, and also appreciated music and other fine arts. Her greatest love was her family, as she will always be remembered for putting others before herself.

Dolores died on Wednesday (Nov. 15, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City, surrounded by her family. She was 78.

She is survived by her children, Steven Bode and wife, Sandra, of Algona; Julie and husband, LaMonte Gray, of Adams, Minn.; and Bonnie and husband, Benjamin Ihde, of Urbandale; grandchildren, Ryan and Ashley Bode; Kelly, Paxton and Olivia Gray; Rachel and Lauren Ihde; step-grandchildren, Jason O’Donnell, Heather O’Donnell Curley; Andrew, Benjamin and Emily Gray; sisters, Anna Schutjer and Gertrude Sleper, both of Titonka, and her brother, John Boehm and wife Amy, Clear Lake.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Harold; brothers, Wilbur and Herman Welhousen; and sisters, Jeanette Krause and Ella Beenken.

Harold Emil Hage Knutsen was born on Feb. 22, 1916, in Hanlontown, the son of Jacob and Clara (Hage) Knutsen. He graduated from Hanlontown High School in 1933 and went on to attend Hamilton Business College in Mason City.

On Nov. 26, 1936, Harold was united in marriage with Stella Irene Anderson in rural Joice. Their son, Gary W. Knutsen, was born on Feb. 2, 1938.

Harold served in the United States Army for one year during World War II, being honorably discharged for medical reasons.

On June 19, 1943, he was united in marriage with Annabelle M. Anderson in Minneapolis, Minn.

Harold was an auditor who had been employed by Midland Cooperative, Midland Auditing Service, the United States Revenue Service and the United States Small Business Administration until retirement in 1976. During these years, he resided in the Minneapolis area.

Because his father, Jacob, was born in Bergen, Norway, Harold enjoyed visiting his relatives there on several occasions and in later years, remained in touch by e-mail.

Harold always cherished his family, friends, work, golf, several retirement years spent in Arizona and working with his computer.

Survivors include his wife, Annabelle, of Lake Mills; a sister, Izetta Knutsen, formerly of Lake Mills; daughter-in-law, Jeanette Warren Knutsen Doty, of Burnsville, Minn.; three grandchildren, Deborah Knutsen of South Saint Paul, Minn., Karen Williams and her husband, Gerald, of Lakeville, Minn., and Michael Knutsen and his wife, Becca, of Lakeville, Minn.; four great-grandchildren, Casey Williams and Ryan, Will and Ellie Grace Knutsen, all of Lakeville, Minn.; and several nieces, nephews, extended relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Stella; son, Gary; two sisters, Hazel and Martha; and a brother, James.

Evelyn I. Fox

ST. ANSGAR — Evelyn I. Fox, 78, died Thursday (Nov. 16, 2006) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday (Nov. 20, 2006) at the St. Ansgar Baptist Church in St. Ansgar, with the Rev. Gary Gonnerman officiating. Burial will be at the St. Ansgar Cemetery.

Evelyn was born on March 4, 1928, in Austin, Minn., to Edward and Etta (Eckert) Goodew. As a teenager, she accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior.

Evelyn married Edgar Fox on May 15, 1948, in Austin, Minn. She worked at Hormel and later at the Good Samaritan Center in St. Ansgar when it first opened. She worked as a nurse’s aide, charge nurse and activity director. After retiring, she went back to the Good Samaritan as a feeder until her health would not let her continue.

She enjoyed flowers, birds, coin collecting and collecting postcards. Her heart was so loving that she opened her home over the years to care for people with health problems. Evelyn will be remembered as a loving person.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two children Robert and Mary; and one brother in infancy.

Evelyn is survived by her husband, Edgar Sr., of St. Ansgar; one son, Edgar Jr. (Dixie), of St. Ansgar; two daughters, Sue (Nick) Streit, of St. Ansgar, and Jo Fox of St. Ansgar; five grandchildren; one honorary grandchild; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ray (Billie) Goodew of Austin, Minn., and Carroll (Audrey) Goodew, of North Carolina; one sister, Val (Ron) Shada of Walker; and a special friend, Jo Nash, of Carpenter.

Reba V. Davison

MASON CITY — Reba V. Davison, 98, of 1142 E. State St., passed away Thursday (Nov. 16, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today (Nov. 18, 2006) at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Patti Aurand officiating.

Reba was born April 26, 1908, in Le Grand, Iowa, the daughter of Anston and Lillian (Snyder) Stanfield. Reba was united in marriage to Leslie Falt in 1933 in Omaha, Neb., and to this union two children were born. Mr. Falt died in 1949. In 1960 she married Bert Davison in Mason City. She attended school in Iowa Falls and received her nursing training in Iowa City. She worked at Mercy Hospital for five years, and then later worked at Park Hospital until 1970.

Reba enjoyed her dog, going to sewing club, watching Lawrence Welk and spending time with her grandchildren.

She was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ and the Eastern Star White Shrine.

Reba is survived by her daughter, Sandra Huber and husband, Loren, of Mason City; four grandchildren, Paul Huber and wife, Janice, of St. Paul, Minn., Doug Huber and wife, Kristie, of Mason City, Cynthia Olson and husband, Bob, of Milwaukee, Wis., and Jessica Johnson and husband, Will, of Tusayan, Ariz.; 13 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Joseph L. Frank

Joseph Leo Frank was born on April 4, 1920, in Mason City, the son of Clement and Mary (Rupp) Frank. He was baptized at St. Joseph Catholic Church and was one of 13 children born to his parents.

On June 5, 1942, Joseph was inducted into the United States Army at Camp Dodge, Iowa, and served his country during World War II. After honorably and faithfully completing his designated military duties, Joseph was formally discharged on June 1, 1943, at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.

Joseph was united in marriage to JoAnn Mabel Davies on Aug. 1, 1953, in Minnesota. The couple became the proud parents of four sons. Joseph and JoAnn treasured time together while fishing, wild game hunting, Sunday afternoon drives and socializing with their friends and relatives. His beloved JoAnn died on Dec. 30, 1983.

Joseph was a hard worker and providing for his family was of great importance to him. He was employed at Decker Meat Packing (Armour) as a butcher for many years.

Joseph was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church, a life member of the VFW Post 733 and the Moose Lodge, all in Mason City and also the North American Fishing Club.

Some of Joseph’s favorite activities and hobbies included cheering for the New York Yankees, the thrill of purchasing cars and fishing boats, vegetable gardening, tending to his apple trees, attending picnics and reunions and cooking, especially foods of his German heritage. Joseph was well known for creating his own special canned hot sauce and “Grandma” pancakes.

He looked forward to the holidays and sharing them with JoAnn and his children and grandchildren. He delighted in having hunting dogs at his side throughout his life, most recently, his companionship with his spaniel, “Rocky.”

His family recalls that Joseph was extremely stubborn, loving, giving and had a great sense of humor.

Joseph is survived by his four sons, Gary (Deb) Frank of Alexandria, Mo., Jimmie (Deb) Frank of El Dorado Hills, Calif., Donald Frank of Mason City, and Jackie (Kim) Frank of Mason City; his two sisters, Charlotte Walker of Mason City and Katherine Schwab of Milwaukee, Wis.; his three brothers, John (Shirley) Frank, Robert (Lola) Frank and William (Evelyn) Frank, all of Mason City; and his seven grandchildren, JoAnn Frank, Tara Frank, Michele Frank, Amanda Frank, Joseph Frank, Tonya Jo Frank and Steve Frank. Joseph will also be dearly missed by several great-grandchildren; his special friend, Roxanne Keeney, and her daughter, Amanda Keeney; and numerous nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Preceding Joseph in death are his wife, JoAnn Frank; his parents, Clement and Mary Frank; five sisters, Dory Strong, Rose Donahoo, Elizabeth Rupp, Anna Jean Dondrucek and Barbara Frank; and his two brothers, Marty and Jacob Frank.

Phyllis Joyce Packard Pals

BELMOND — Phyllis Joyce Packard Pals courageously completed her life’s journey on Earth on Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006.

The funeral service for Phyllis will be at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond with Pastor Troy Pflibsen officiating. Burial will be at Belmond Cemetery in Belmond.

Visitation will be from 2 until 5 p.m. today, Nov. 19, at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home and continue one hour prior to the service Monday at the church.

Phyllis was born on March 24, 1915, in Belmond, Iowa, to Julia Nelson Packard and Edwin Chester (Ned) Packard. She was educated in the Belmond Public School system, graduating with the class of 1933. She was brought to the waters of Holy Baptism on April 11, 1915, and renewed her faith in Confirmation at Trinity Lutheran Church in Belmond, Iowa.

Shortly after graduation, she purchased her first grocery store and has been a prominent and successful businesswoman for 71 years.

On November 14, 1937, Phyllis was married to Fred Pals, and to that union two children were born, Dean and Vicki. They are left to cherish her memory, along with their families. Dean’s family includes son, Dighton (Krista) Pals and their children, Julia (Shane) Eckhoff, and their daughter, Aubrey, and Allysia and Brianne Pals; daughter, Deana (Dwight) Koenen, and their children, Lindsey and Shaun Koenen; Vicki and Frank’s family includes daughter, Joell Quigley, and her son, Xavier, son, Ross (Amy) Quigley, and their children, Eliza Joyce and Reid Thomas, and daughter, Jerilyn Quigley.

Surviving Phyllis, besides Dean and Vicki and their families, are two sisters, Norma Jeanne (Leland) Jenison of Belmond and Leila (Arvold) Jacobson of Sun City, Ariz.; brother-in-law, Harold Smith, of Belmond; sister-in-law, Rosie Pals, of Tampa Bay, Fla.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding her in death are her parents, Julia and Ned; her husband, Fred; two brothers, Dighton and Bud Packard; and special sister-in-law, Marie.

Phyllis has lived a very full life. To know her was to love her. She has been so important to so many people, and held in high esteem for her loyalty and integrity. Phyllis has been a real promoter of our town of Belmond. She is highly respected by her fellow business persons. A host of friends join her family in mourning the loss of the great lady. She was an icon and legend.

Allen Keith ‘Shorty’ Zurcher

GREENE— Funeral services for Allen Keith “Shorty” Zurcher, 80, of 104 W. South St., Greene, will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 20, 2006, at St. John’s United Church of Christ, rural Greene, with Pastor Charles Dorsey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with military honors conducted by the Waverly Amvets Post 79.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, Nov. 19, at Reid’s Funeral Chapel, 519 N. First St., Greene, and will continue one hour before services Monday at the church.

Allen Keith Zurcher was born on Sept. 21, 1926, at home, in rural Coldwater Township, Butler County, a son of Thomas and Florence (Pringle) Zurcher, and died Thursday, Nov. 16, 2006, at the Hospice Inpatient Unit at the Floyd County Memorial Hospital in Charles City.

He received his education in a country school and graduated from the Greene High School in 1944. He attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls for one term.

On February 28, 1945, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps where he served as a combination welder with the 534th Air Engineer Squadron in Clark Field on Luzon. Following his discharge on Jan. 15, 1947, he returned home where he was employed by Shield Bantam in Waverly. On Nov. 16, 1949, he re-enlisted with the 2473rd Air Force Reserve, Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, Neb.

Keith was united in marriage to Adelheid Litterer on Nov. 23, 1950, at St. John’s United Church of Christ in rural Nashua. They made their home in Waverly.

He was recalled into active duty March 1, 1951, where he served with the 1300th Maintenance Squadron at Mountain Home, Idaho. He was released from active duty on Feb. 29, 1952.

He resumed his employment at Shield Bantam, where he remained until 1958. Keith and his family moved to Greene where he started Zurcher Construction, which he operated until 1985. He was co-owner in another family owned business, Plasta Plug Inc. for 39 years.

He loved music and enjoyed singing. Keith was interested in aviation, at one time owning a plane of his own. When he didn’t have his head in the clouds, he spent time riding, repairing, or rebuilding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He made a large barbecue cooker for roasting hogs using it for various events in the area.

“Shorty” will be remembered for his friendly disposition and humble demeanor. He considered himself a good listener who enjoyed hearing a good story or joke.

Keith was baptized in 1926 at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene. He became a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Pleasant Hill, where he has served as elder and deacon of the church.

Living family members include his loving wife of 56 years, Adelheid, his son, Terry (Kelly) Zurcher, of Greene; two grandchildren, William and Jodee; two sisters, Arlene (Bill) Birkholz of Fairborn, Ohio, and Bonnie (Ervin) Loomis, of Greene; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother in infancy.

Kimberly Joy Grimm

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — Kimberly Joy Grimm, 33, of Burnsville, Minn., formerly of Riceville, died Friday (Nov. 17, 2006) at Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, Minn.

Kimberly Joy Grimm was born Feb. 11, 1973, at Charles City, the daughter of Roger and Judy (Holm) Grimm. She graduated from Riceville High School in 1991, attended Waldorf College for two years and graduated from Wartburg College in 1995. Kimberly more recently completed the Radiology Program at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, Minn., and was currently enrolled in the MRI Internship Program.

In March of 2000, Kimberly was diagnosed with a blood disorder called Thrombotic Thombocytopenia Purpura (TTP). In a brochure expressing her appreciation for blood donors, Kimberly described herself: “My personality is the type that is very determined, thankful and most grateful to all the surrounding support. I am athletic, love to play sports, enjoy the simple things, like a true smile and a ground ball at shortstop. I have grown in many areas and without donors, I wouldn’t have any of this. Thank you. Life is short, have faith, family and fun and live it with a ZEST. God has blessed me with the opportunity to show my appreciation, share a little about my story, and to most of all, encourage blood donations. Thank you kindly for the courage.”

BELMOND — Marcia Lynne Harris of Belmond, Iowa, passed away at home with her family by her side on Nov. 16, 2006, after a long battle with cancer.

Marcia was born on Dec. 28, 1949, to Elmer “Mike” and Marjorie (Goeman) Christians in Belmond, Iowa. Marcia was raised on a farm outside Kanawha, Iowa, and graduated from high school there in 1968.

After completing her degree at Mankato Commercial College, she was married to Gary Harris on July 18, 1969, at the Wright Christian Reformed Church in rural Kanawha. The two resided in Virginia for two years before returning to the Belmond area.

Marcia is remembered for her quick smile, infectious laughter, and unending love for her family. Her favorite memories were of times spent with her children, grandchildren, and friends. Marcia especially enjoyed listening to piano music and the many private concerts performed by daughter, Angie.

Marcia enjoyed collecting recipe and recipe books and was assembling a personal cookbook to give to each member of her family. Interesting recipes that passed the family taste test often became part of a new holiday tradition.

Marcia loved to travel with Gary and would collect special rocks to extend the memories of those times together.

She was a member of the Belmond United Methodist Church and volunteered many hours as Sunday School Superintendent and was active on the Christian Education committee.

Marcia was well known for her love of the water. She and her family enjoyed their free time boating, fishing, and entertaining at Clear Lake. Following the discovery of Marcia’s cancer in 2003, she vowed to capture photographs of sunsets to remember each day as a gift.

Marcia is survived by her husband, Gary; her children, Valerie (Brent) Bryant, Columbia, Mo.; son, Jeffrey, and special friend, Nicole Neuhring, Mason City; daughter, Angela, Des Moines; grandchildren, Katie and Jacob; special grandchildren, Colt, Taylor, and Cidney; mother, Marjorie A. Christians; sister, Margaret (Doyce) Pringnitz, Kanawha; brother, Michael (Laurie) Christians, Kanawha; mother-in-law, Emily Harris, Lake Cornelia; sisters-in-law, Vicki (Dan) Jackson, Clear Lake, Chris (Bill) Broshar, Kanawha, Lori (Don) Lemieux, New Hampshire; also surviving Marcia are many nieces and nephews.

Jessie G. Hansen

GREENE — Funeral services for Jessie G. Hansen, 93, formerly of 413 Courtland St., Greene, will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 21, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church in Greene with Pastor Paul Uzel officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

Jessie Grace Taylor was born on May 14, 1913, in rural Toddville, Linn County, a daughter of Fred and Fern (Mason) Taylor, and died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006, at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

She received her education in country schools and graduated from the Toddville High School in 1932.

She was united in marriage to Harley Hansen on Sept. 5, 1933, in Toddville, Iowa. In 1936 they moved to a farm in rural Greene where they remained until 1956 when the purchased a farm between Plainfield and Greene. Harley and Jessie retired in 1978 and moved into Greene. He died March 31, 1984.

Jessie was a faithful member of the First Presbyterian Church in Greene, where she was involved in various church circles which included the Friendly Circle and the Sewing Circle. She was a member of the Coldwater Community Club, 4-H leader for several years, and helped with the congregate meals at the Greene Community Center. She will be remembered for the homemade bread and baked goods she made.

She will also be remembered as a caring and generous person with her time and possessions, thinking of others first. She was a practical individual who accepted life as it was.

Jessie leaves to join her husband, Harley, who died on March 31, 1984; her daughter, Marion Foss, who died in 2001; her parents; four sisters, Ruth Feekes, Jean Tesar, Lois Oliphant, and Dorothy Shaffer; and two brothers, William David Taylor and Dan Everet Taylor.

CHEROKEE — Stacey Goodrich, 39, formerly of Cherokee, Iowa, died Friday (Nov. 17, 2006) at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, Minn., following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Cherokee, Iowa. The Rev. Ray Hampton will officiate. Burial will be at 4 p.m. on Monday in the Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Stacey was born on March 13, 1967, in Cedar Falls, Iowa, to Larry and Joyce (Garth) Goodrich. In 1976 she moved with her family to Cherokee, Iowa, where she was a Washington High School graduate in 1986. She attended Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, graduating in 1991 with a degree in social work. She returned to Cherokee, Iowa, and was employed by Cherokee Work Services for several years.

As a result of her handicap and deteriorating health she moved to Sioux City, Iowa, residing at the Indian Hills Care Center in 2000. In July of 2002, Stacey moved to Manly, Iowa, residing in the Manly Care Center, to be closer to her doctors at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.

Stacey was the Easter Seal poster child in 1979. She enjoyed all music, romantic comedy movies and due to her strong faith, she embraced a fine sense of humor and positive outlook.

Stacey had worked as a counselor at Camp Sunnyside while she was in high school. She truly appreciated the kindness and support of the people of Cherokee and the various communities in which she had lived.

Survivors include her parents, Larry and Joyce Goodrich, of Cherokee, Iowa; a sister, Kelsey Goodrich, of Omaha, Nebraska; a brother, Garth Goodrich, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; her maternal grandmother, Dorothy Garth, of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, George Garth; fraternal grandparents, Dale and Mona Goodrich; and her aunt, Sherri Goodrich.

MASON CITY — Kathryn M. Kellar, 84, Mason City died Friday (Nov. 17, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 22, 2006, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 329 E. State St., Mason City, with the Rev. Sid Bohls officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Kathryn was born on Jan. 23, 1922, to Joe H. and Phoebe S. (Olson) Frye. At the age of thirteen, she and her family moved to Swea City, Iowa, where she attended school.

She was married to Lloyd E. Kellar on Feb. 9, 1942, in Alexandria, La.

In 1945 Lloyd and Kathryn moved to Mason City where they spent the remainder of their lives.

Kathryn worked in sales at Artz & Merritt Sporting Goods and Younkers. She also worked in the drapery department at Webers and retired in 1989.

Kathryn was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church. She was an active member of the church and many church organizations. She loved spending time with her family and friends.

Kathryn is survived by her sons, Lloyd Kellar Jr. and wife, Judy, of Nampa, Idaho, Richard Kellar of Aberdeen, Wash., James Kellar of Lake City, Minn., and Donald Kellar and wife, Diana, of Mason City; grandchildren, Brenda Christiansen, Laura Clubb, Robbie Kellar, Heather Winters, Gregory Kellar, Stephanie Ruefer, Michael Kellar, Amy Petersen, Brandon Kellar, Jared Kellar and Lindsay Nuehring; fifteen great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and one brother, Granville Frye, of Bowie, Md.

Kathryn was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lloyd; sister, Arlene Stall; one brother, Thorvald Johnson; and daughter-in-law, Mardelle.

Mary Lucille Eikenbary was born near Rockwell, Iowa, on April 24, 1923, the daughter of Henry J. and Mary (Hinrichs) Bergman. Lucille graduated from Rockwell High School and attended Hamilton Business School in Mason City, after which she became the secretary at Radio Chapel in Mason City, also serving as organist there. She was the accompanist on KGLO Bible Broadcast for many years.

 She married Charles W. Eikenbary on June 7, 1945, at Radio Chapel. He preceded her in death on October 7, 1963.

 They were the parents of three children: Charles Douglas, Mary Ann (who died in infancy) and Marilyn Jeanne.

 Moving to Minneapolis in 1966, she was employed as an administrative secretary at Lyon Brokerage Company for nearly twenty years. She moved back to Mason City in 1989, and for 16 years served as a ministry assistant at First Covenant Church, where she was a member.

Among her many gifts was her great love for sacred music. Throughout her life she shared her musical gifts in the First Baptist Church of Rockwell, Radio Chapel, Grace Baptist Church and First Covenant Church in Mason City, and Crystal Evangelical Free Church and Olivet Baptist Church in Minneapolis, as well as entertaining her many friends at Good Shepherd in Mason City.

Her special gift of encouraging others will be remembered by the many lives that were touched by her kind words and personal notes.

She was especially proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren who always brought a smile to her face.

She is survived by her son, Doug, and his wife, Jackie, of Mason City; her daughter, Marilyn, of Sacramento, Calif.; her four grandchildren, Amy (Ryan) Eikenbary-Barber of Lake Geneva, Wis., Angelyn (John) Lander of Mason City, Abigale Eikenbary, of White Bear Lake, Minn., and Brian Lhotka, of Minneapolis, Minn.; three great-grandchildren, Jack Lander, Anja and Lukas Eikenbary-Barber; and her sister, Dorothy Sawyer, of Rockwell; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her daughter, Mary Ann; her sister, Margaret Stoddart; and her brother, Henry J. (Bud) Bergman.
