Inge Bowen

MASON CITY — Inge Bowen passed away on May 17, 2006. She was born in Vienna, Austria, on March 9, 1929, and continued to live in Austria until she married Robert Oliver Bowen of Mason City, Iowa, who preceded her in death.

She was proud of each of her children, all of whom survive her: Robert (Connie) Bowen of Canton, Ohio; Sylvia Ann (Doug) Bard of White Bear Lake, Minn.; Cynthia Sue Bowen of West Des Moines; Katrina Mae Bowen and Michael Richard Bowen of Mason City, Iowa.

Inge was equally proud of her eight grandchildren: Anaise Herta (Mark Schoeneweis) Bowen of Toms River, N.J.; Rebekah Lee (Kevin) Williams of Little Rock, Ark.; Emily Joy and Elliot Robert Bowen; Melodie Talia Bard; Whitney Rose Bowen Brown, Vanessa Marie Bowen Brown and Spencer Ross Bowen Brown. She often talked of how blessed she was by each of her grandchildren.

Her many talents as a gardener, baker, seamstress and cook were appreciated by all who knew her.

A celebration of Inge’s life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 27, 2006, in the Fireside Room of First United Methodist Church, 119 S. Georgia Ave., Mason City.

Memorials may be made to the Inge Bowen Memorial Fund.

David Spitz

OSAGE — David A. Spitz, 59, of Peoria, Ill., and formerly of Osage died passed away Tuesday (May 23, 2006) at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery with military honors at the grave by Orchard American Legion Post 641.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m.

Allen Gray

MASON CITY — Allen Gray, 82, of Rockford, Ill., formerly of Mason City, passed away Saturday (May 20, 2006) in his home.

He was born Sept. 29, 1923, in Lyle, Minn., to Monta and Anna Gray. He married Mary Johanns on Sept. 27, 1947, in Mason City. Allen served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He retired from Interstate Power Co. in 1988. He operated Gray’s Garage.

He was an avid camper, snowmobiler, show car enthusiast and small engine hobbyist. He and his wife moved to Mesa, Ariz., in 1995.

He is survived by his loving wife; son, John (Norma) Gray of Sonoma, Calif.; daughters, Jeannie (Dennis) O’Leary of Rockford, Ill. and Rosemary (Fred) Vaske of Sacramento, Calif.; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2006, in Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., Mason City. There will be no visitation. Interment in Arlington Memorial Park Cemetery, Rockford, Ill.

BRITT — Mildred Miller, 75, of Britt died Thursday (May 25, 2006) at the Hancock County Memorial Hospital in Britt.

George C. Merten

MASON CITY — George C. Merten, 71, of Mason City died Monday (May 22, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. today, May 26, 2006, at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., with the Rev. Larry Day of the Free Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation was held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 2006, at Major Erickson Funeral Home.

George was born on April 5, 1935, in Big Lake, Minn., the son of Clyde R. and Ida (Adams) Merten. He attended school in Ventura.

He was married to Jeanette Staley on March 15, 1958, in Canton, S.D. To this union three sons were born. George worked for Mason City Iron and Metal for 16 years as a supervisor.

In his free time he enjoyed camping, traveling and listening to country music.

George is survived by his two sons, Douglas Merten and wife, Laura, of Killen, Texas, and Charles Merten and wife, Myong, of Texarkana, Texas; daughters, Jennie Rappley of Spooner, Wis., Denise Schaffer and husband, Rod Day, of Maplewood, Minn., Debra and husband, Dean Vant-Hof, of Milaca, Minn.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sisters, Mary Auchampach of Nora Springs, Susan Wells of Rudd, Nancy Frye of Mason City and Betty Wells of Davenport; brothers, Raymond Merten and wife, Ruby, of Tuscon, Ariz., and Jack Merten and wife, Darlene, of Clinton.

George was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Jeanette, in 1994; and son, Roger Merten, in 2006.

GREENE — Lester Rover, 86, of 110 S. High St., Greene, died Wednesday (May 24, 2006) at the Liebe Care Center in Greene.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2006, at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Vilmar, rural Greene, with Pastor Mark Walker officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Greene.

 Austin ‘Austie’ Loden

OSAGE — Austin “Austie” Loden, 68, of Osage, died Friday (May 26, 2006) at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery.

Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home in Osage with a rosary at 3:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Austin was born March 9, 1938, in Osage, Iowa, the son of Svein “Sam” Loden and LaVerne (Kindschuh) Loden. He graduated from Osage High School in 1957.

He married Shirley Adams on Nov. 4, 1961, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Osage. From a young age, Austin was fond of working on cars. In 1960, he went to work for Floyd’s Service in Clear Lake, Iowa, as an auto-mechanic.

In 1968, he became a small business owner, opening up Osage Auto Electric on March 27. Doors were open until his retirement in January 2003.

Austin also enjoyed spending time building and fixing old gas engines. This was a hobby he truly loved. He enjoyed attending gas engine shows all around the midwest. Austin enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and drinking tea at Hardee’s.

Austin is survived by his wife of 44 years, Shirley Loden, of Osage; his mother, LaVerne Loden, of Osage; his children, Dean Loden and his wife, Marilyn, of Osage, Mary Christeson and her husband, Roy, of Clear Lake, Mark Loden and his wife, Mary, of Plymouth, Michael Loden and his wife, Denise, of Osage; three granddaughters, Brittany Loden, Alexandra Loden and Emily Loden; four step-grandchildren, Beth Walker, Brian Walker, Christopher Gerk and his wife, Lindy, and Nikki Roll; and two step-great-grandchildren, Tristen Gerk and Ashten Gerk.

Austin is also survived by one brother, Roger Loden, and his wife, Sandy, of Osage; two sisters, Kira Weber of Osage and Sagda Flowers and her husband, Richard, of Omaha, Neb.; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Svein Loden; and a sister, Marie Elizabeth Loden.

Kenneth G. Heller

GARNER — Kenneth G. Heller, 78, of Forest City, formerly of Garner, died Thursday (May 25, 2006) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

Memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating. Inurnment will be at Madison Township Cemetery in rural Forest City.

Lawrence John Besch

WHITTEMORE —Lawrence John Besch was born Aug. 10, 1925, in rural Whittemore, the son of Joseph and Lucy Bisenius Besch. He grew up on the farm and attended Presentation Academy, graduating in 1943. After his schooling, Lawrence began farming.

On June 14, 1950, Lawrence was united in marriage to Mary Jane Bleich at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner. After their marriage, the couple lived on the farm where they lived their entire married lives. Lawrence later became a salesman for DeKalb and also Moorman Feeds while continuing to farm.

Lawrence enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, being on the farm, golfing, fishing, playing cards and gardening. He enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years and watching baseball on television.

Lawrence is a member of Holy Name, Knights of Columbus Council No. 952, and a very active member of St. Michael’s Parish where he was a long time adult mass server. He was a past member of the Garrigan and Algona High school boards.

Lawrence died Thursday (May 25, 2006) at his home. He was 80 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, of Whittemore; children, Patricia and Jon Thompson of Huron, S.D., David and Kris Besch of Cairo, Egypt, Stephen Besch and Peggy Woolridge of Huron, S.D., Ruth Flores of Cedar Rapids, JoAnn and Chris Goerdt of Iowa City; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Cecelia Fandel, of Morton, Ill., and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Helen Dalton; a brother Joseph Besch

Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon on Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church with Father Russell Bleich and Father Victor Ramaeker concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 28 at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Whittemore with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m.

Mildred Miller

Mildred, the daughter of John E. and Etta Sleper, was born July 8, 1930, in Titonka. She was educated at Titonka schools and Northwestern College. She taught school for several years in western Iowa and in Britt. She married Mark Miller Jr. (Monty) in 1953.

Mildred worked for many years on the family farm and golf cart business. She also volunteered with various groups that her children were involved in including PTA, scouts, 4-H, Music Mothers, choir, Sunday school, and attended all the children’s and grandchildren’s activities. She also loved spending time with her special friends in Britt and at Spirit Lake.

Mildred was a member of the Congregational Church where she was active in choir, Sunday school and other activities of the church.

She enjoyed singing in the “Sound of Music” with the Hancock County Little Theater singers and was a member of the Women’s Club, the Red Hat Society and various other community organizations.

Mildred is survived by four children, Mark III, “Skip” and his wife, Sherry, John and his wife, Kim, Jim and his wife, Peg, all of Britt, and Sue and her husband, Mike Taylor, of Denton, Texas; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Greta Aukes and her husband, Walter, and Edna Balvance; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters, Ann Boomgarden and Margaret Stecker; two brothers, Evert Sleper and John R. Sleper; and three brothers-in-law, Henry Stecker, Lawrence Balvance and Louis Boomgarden.

ROCKWELL CITY — Russell M. Fryar, 91, passed away Thursday (May 25, 2006) at Sunny Knoll Care Centre in Rockwell City.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Rockwell City with the Rev. Marcia Sangel officiating. Burial will be in the Rosehill Cemetery in Rockwell City.

Russell Merle Fryar was born Oct. 16, 1914, on a farm near Lytton, Iowa. He attended country schools and graduated from Rockwell City High School with the class of 1933.

On Nov. 16, 1947, he was united in marriage to Edythe L. Bellcock at the Methodist Church in Rockwell City. Russell farmed for most of his life in the Rockwell City area and also worked as a field assessor for Calhoun Co. for many years.

In 1975, the couple moved into Rockwell City and Russell retired from farming in 1986. In 2001, Edythe passed away and later that year Russell moved into Sunnyview Independent Living. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, a past church trustee, and a former board member of the Extension Council.

Janice L. Ludwig

BODE — Janice L. Ludwig died Friday (May 26, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City. She was 72 years old.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Good Hope Lutheran Church with the Rev. James Berka officiating. Burial will be in Buffalo Township Cemetery.

Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Titonka.

Janice L. Ludwig was born on March 8, 1934, in Bode, Iowa, the daughter of Delmar and Thora Lomen Kinseth. She grew up in Bode where she attended school and later went on to West Bend High School.

On Sept. 16, 1950, Janice was united in marriage to Carl Ludwig in West Bend, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple lived and farmed near Emmetsburg, Iowa. Carl went back to building elevators and the couple moved several times throughout Nebraska, Texas and Iowa before settling in Titonka in 1956. Janice went to work at the cafe in Titonka before becoming bookkeeper at the Tyke Service Center, which the couple owned and operated. They later started Ludwig Ready Mix where she did the bookkeeping and mixed cement.

She enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, playing the piano, traveling and doing needlework and embroidery. She was a member of the Red Hat Society and was elected dutchess of the 1998 Titonka Centennial. She was also a member of Good Hope Lutheran Church. Janice loved singing hymns and it wasn’t uncommon to find her sitting outside singing them.

Janice treasured her morning coffee times with all her friends at the coffee shop in Tyke. She enjoyed going to both Gary’s and Pam’s farms and playing and teasing with her great-grandchildren. Janice’s favorite sayings were “God never gives you more than you can handle,” and “It’ll work out, don’t worry.” Janice’s love for watermelon and jelly beans was immeasurable.

Janice is survived by her mother, Thora Kinseth, of Titonka; son, Gary, and Barbara Ludwig of Forest City; daughter, Pamela, and Jim Hansen of Hampton; grandchildren, Jaclyn and Scott Heiser, Nathan Ludwig and fiance, Jill Farnham, Jym and Elaine Hansen and Adam Hansen; great-grandchildren, Emma, Chandler and Betsy Heiser, Megan Rieken, Abby, Alex and Cole Hansen; brother, Robert, and Delores Kinseth of Grinnell; sister, Rachael, and Wayne Senne of Urbandale, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and husband.

OSAKIS, Minn. — Memorial services for Dr. Van W. Hunt, of Osakis, Minn., formerly of Mason City, will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 3, at the Good Shepherd Health Center, second floor chapel, 302 Second St. N. E. in Mason City.

Kenneth G. Heller

GARNER — Kenneth G. Heller, 78, formerly of Garner, most recently residing in Forest City, died Thursday (May 25, 2006) at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Forest City with Pastor Lee Laaveg officiating. Inurnment will be at Madison Township Cemetery in rural Forest City.

There will be no visitation.

Kenneth G. Heller was born in Fonda, Iowa, on June 21, 1927, the son of Frank and Clara (Annenson) Heller. He was baptized on April 4, 1937, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa, and confirmed on June 1, 1941.

He moved with his family to Hayfield, Iowa. On May 15, 1946, Kenneth graduated from Hayfield High School. Kenneth continued his education at Waldorf College in Forest City. He played football, sang in the choir and was active in the Science Club. He then attended Dunwoody College of Technology in Minneapolis, Minn.

On Aug. 18, 1951, Kenneth was united in marriage to Florence Moe at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills. The couple made their home on the family farm near Hayfield. Kenneth raised grain crops, livestock and had dairy cattle. He enjoyed spending time with his family and loved taking his nieces and nephews to the local fairs and festivals. He instilled a love for animals and the great outdoors in all his children. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served as an usher in his younger days.

Kenneth is survived by his children, Paul Heller of Garner, Steven Heller and wife, Vivian, of Forest City, Karin Heller of Mason City and Jon Heller of Tulsa, Okla.; and two grandchildren, Michael and Stephanie. Lawrence J. Besch

WHITTEMORE — Lawrence John Besch was born Aug. 10, 1925, in rural Whittemore, the son of Joseph and Lucy Bisenius Besch. He grew up on the farm and attended Presentation Academy, graduating in 1943. After his schooling, Lawrence began farming.

On June 14, 1950, Lawrence was united in marriage to Mary Jane Bleich at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Garner, Iowa. After their marriage, the couple lived on the farm where they lived their entire married lives. Lawrence later became a salesman for DeKalb and also Moorman Feeds while continuing to farm.

Lawrence enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, being on the farm, golfing, fishing, playing cards and gardening. He enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years and watching baseball on television.

Lawrence was a member of Holy Name, Knights of Columbus Council No. 952 and a very active member of St. Michael’s Parish where he was a long time adult Mass server. He was a past member of the Garrigan and Algona high school boards.

Lawrence died Thursday, May 25, 2006, at his home. He was 80 years old.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, of Whittemore, Iowa; children: Patricia and Jon Thompson of Huron, S.D., David and Kris Besch of Cairo, Egypt, Stephen Besch and Peggy Woolridge of Huron, S.D., Ruth Flores of Cedar Rapids and JoAnn and Chris Goerdt of Iowa City; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister, Cecelia Fandel of Morton, Ill., and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Helen Dalton; and a brother, Joseph Besch.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today with a K.C. rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Garry-Roberts-Murphy-Schaaf Funeral Home in Whittemore.

David A. Spitz

OSAGE — David A. Spitz, age 59, of Peoria, Ill., and formerly of Osage, passed away Tuesday (May 23, 2006) at Proctor Hospital in Peoria.

David was born May 18, 1947, in Osage, the son of Donald A. and Elizabeth (Juenger) Spitz. He graduated from Osage High School in 1965. David married Marilyn Mayer on Nov. 2, 1968, in Osage. He was employed at White Farm and Winnebago before moving to Peoria in 1989. He graduated from the University of Illinois in 2005 with a bachelor’s degree in business and was employed as an engineer at Caterpillar Inc. in Mossville, Ill. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran from the Vietnam Era, serving from 1968-1972. David was a member of the Orchard American Legion.

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, May 31, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage with the Rev. John Moser officiating. Burial will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery with military honors at graveside by Orchard American Legion Post 641. MASON CITY — Clarice (Kelly) R. Paulson, of Mason City, Iowa, died May 26, 2006, at the Mercy Medical Center in Mason City.

Kelly was born in Northwood, Iowa, on December 6, 1916, the daughter of A.B. Ranum and Clara Ranum. Following graduation from Northwood High School, she entered the University of Wisconsin at Madison and graduated in 1939 with a degree in related art, the focus on interior design. In her freshman year French class, she met her future husband. In 1940, Kelly married Dr. Jerome (Jerry) F. Paulson, the love of her life. After Jerry’s service in World War II and his subsequent orthopedic training, the Paulson family moved to Mason City in 1951. Jerry practiced orthopedic surgery with Surgery Associates at Mercy Hospital until his death in 1973. After Jerry’s death, Kelly worked at Kellum Interiors and, then, Professional Design L.C. as an interior designer for more than twenty years.

Beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Kelly was a gifted woman of boundless energy, creative spirit and intellect, and passion for living. She remained vital and engaged with her family, friends, and community until the day she died. Kelly contributed to Mason City civic life in a wide range of pursuits and served as a dedicated board member of the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum, the Frank Lloyd Wright Stockman House, the Mason City Planning and Zoning Commission, the YWCA, Girl Scouts, and other organizations. For fifteen years, she served on the architectural review committee of Asbury Farm.

Loving all things beautiful, Kelly was particularly dedicated in later life to the MacNider Art Museum which she helped found and served for twenty years as an active board member and the Stockman House where she served as a docent, created and maintained the cutting gardens and bouquets, and procured home furnishings. For her work at the Stockman House, Kelly was awarded the Friend of Preservation Award in 1999 by the River City Society of Historic Preservation. She was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church and committed to the Hospice of North Iowa.

At home, Kelly loved her gardens, dogs, music, books, parties, and art of all kinds. She remained interested in and informed about finance, farming, trees, and other matters of local and national interest. Always eager to learn and experience things firsthand, the all-Norwegian Kelly traveled to Italy, Mexico, Greece, and Scotland in her ninth decade.

First and foremost, Kelly loved her family intensely and maintained a close relationship with friends, old and new. Generous in spirit and young in heart, she strove for excellence in herself, her family, those around her, and all that she did. Kelly believed that “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21). She will be forever loved, long remembered, and deeply missed.

Kelly is survived by her daughter, Mary Kramer, of Rockville Centre, N.Y.; daughter, Jane Gregerson, and her husband David of Minneapolis, Minn.; son, Eric, of St. Louis Park, Minn.; grandchildren, Daniel Gregerson, and his wife Cari, of Minneapolis, Minn.; Anne Gregerson, of Minneapolis, Minn.; one great-grandson, Henry; and one sister, Janice Meier, and her husband, Robert, of Gainesville, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome; her parents, A.B. and Clara Ranum; her sister, Joan; her brother, Wayne; and half-sisters, Randine Thronson and Agnes Cleveland.

Following the death of A.G. in 2002, Neva moved to Nora Springs in 2003 to live with her daughter and son-in-law.

Neva was a member of Faith Baptist Church. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, crossword puzzles, Yahtzee, listening to Christian radio and baking cookies for the grandchildren.

Neva is survived by a son, Daryl K. Archie V. Martin

CHARLES CITY — Archie V. Martin, 96, of Charles City, was born on Nov. 12, 1909 in Farmington, Iowa. He passed away on Sunday, May 28, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Private family services will be held at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Mason City on Tuesday, May 30, with the Rev. Jim Stiles and the Rev. Jo Frahm-Watkins officiating.

He was educated in the Farmington, Iowa, school system. He began his career as a singer having his own radio show on WIAS radio station in Ottumwa and performing at numerous concerts and social events. He worked as a machinist in Rockford, Ill. and Moline, Ill., and it was from Northern Ordinance in Minneapolis, Minn., where he was drafted for the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos, N.M. After World War II, he collaborated with his brother Bill, to form Martin Brothers Paint Contractors, in Charles City where they built a successful business. A heart attack in 1972 forced his retirement.

He was an avid lover of the outdoors. His passions were fishing and hunting, having made numerous trips to Alaska, Canada and most of the United States in pursuit of the outdoor experience. He was a human encyclopedia on the identification of any flower, tree, bird, animal or insect. He also enjoyed his flower and vegetable gardens, taking pride in his “county fair-sized” produce. He was also an engaging storyteller with a phenomenal memory. In sports…the Cubs were always tuned in on his TV.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie, of 72 years; daughters, Kathryn Herbrechtsmeyer and Charlotte Springer of Charles City, Debbra (Scott) Metcalf of Mason City, Brenda (Gary) Molitor, of Mason City; son, James and wife Sonja Martin of Minaki, Ontario, Canada; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Eloise Schultz, of Olathe, Kan.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Lynnette in 1959; three brothers and two sisters.

He will always be remembered for his incredible zest for life which helped him overcome the numerous medical challenges he encountered.

Olivia was a freshman at Clear Lake High School where she was involved in basketball, cheerleading, choir, track and dance. She was also an honorary art student, academic scholar, DARE role model and a member of the student council. Olivia’s personality can’t be summed up by activities or achievements, but her beautiful smile and sweet spirit will be dearly missed.

Olivia was an active member of the Praise Community Church, Mason City, and because of her love for God, and compassion for others, Olivia chose to give the gift of life through organ donation.

For her work at the Stockman House, Kelly was awarded the Friend of Preservation Award in 1999 by the River City Society of Historic Preservation. She was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church and committed to the Hospice of North Iowa.

At home, Kelly loved her gardens, dogs, music, books, parties, and art of all kinds. She remained interested in and informed about finance, farming, trees, and other matters of local and national interest. Always eager to learn and experience things firsthand, the all-Norwegian Kelly traveled to Italy, Mexico, Greece and Scotland in her ninth decade.

First and foremost, Kelly loved her family intensely and maintained a close relationship with friends old and new. Generous in spirit and young in heart, she strove for excellence in herself, her family, those around her and in all that she did. Kelly believed that, “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (Matthew 6:21). She will be forever loved, long remembered and deeply missed.

Kelly is survived by her daughter, Mary Kramer, of Rockville Centre, N.Y.; daughter, Jane Gregerson, and her husband, David, of Minneapolis, Minn.; son, Eric, of St. Louis Park, Minn.; grandchildren, Daniel Gregerson, and his wife, Cari, of Minneapolis, Minn., Anne Gregerson, of Minneapolis, Minn.; one great-grandson, Henry; and one sister, Janice Meier, and her husband, Robert, of Gainesville, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome; her parents, A.B. and Clara Ranum; her sister, Joan; her brother, Wayne; and half-sisters, Randine Thronson and Agnes Cleveland.

Ryan Lee Mausehund

FOREST CITY — Ryan Lee Mausehund, 18, of Forest City, formerly of Britt, died Sunday (May 28, 2006) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, 178 Center St. W. in Britt, with the Rev. Tom Healey officiating. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Britt.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Ewing Dugger Funeral Chapel, Britt, and continue one hour prior to services on Thursday at the chapel.

Ryan, the son of Becky Gayken Mausehund and Terry Mausehund, was born Sept. 27, 1987, in Britt. Ryan has resided at North Central Human Services in Forest City since March of 1994. He attended classes at the Forest City Schools, which he enjoyed very much, graduating with the class of 2005.

Ryan enjoyed watching television, especially Scooby Doo cartoons and his favorite NASCAR driver, Greg Biffle, race. He also enjoyed having a lot of people around him. Ryan was very proud of his Special Olympics medals and especially enjoyed participating in bowling.

For parents of all special children: We look like everyone else. We work, we laugh, we cry, we struggle, we soar, we are human and because of what we have lived, we see through special eyes designed just for us. We will not tolerate injustice, we will not settle for the status quo, we question authority, we take nothing for granted, we are thankful for the small things and we love big. We have truly been kept in the palm of His hand. We are the people with the ultimate gift — our special child.

Those left to cherish and celebrate his memory are his parents, Becky (Gayken) Mausehund of Kanawha and Terry Mausehund of Neola, Iowa; three brothers, Jason Gayken of Garner and Terry Gayken and Tony Gayken of Britt; maternal grandparents, Harold (Bud) and Beverly Gayken of Britt; paternal grandparents, Veleta Mausehund and Rick Gremmer of Wesley and Larry and Sue Mausehund of Rudd; paternal great-grandmother, Mary Mausehund of Nora Springs; numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins; and all of his friends at Krysilis (North Central Human Services).

AUSTIN, Minn. — Bonnie Jo Eckholt, 53, of 1509 Eighth Ave. N.W., Austin, Minn., died Monday (May 29, 2006) at her home.

John H. Calhoun

MASON CITY — John H. Calhoun, 92, of 103 S. York, died Wednesday (May 17, 2006) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 3, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, 100 First St. N.E., with the Rev. Patty Aurand officiating. Private family inurnment services will take place in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. The family requests memorials be directed to the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Mason City Foundation, or the YMCA youth.

John Harlan Calhoun was born July 16, 1913, in Lake Mills, Iowa, the son of Dr. Joseph and Mabel (Bryant) Calhoun. He was raised and received his early education in Lake Mills. Secondary education was in Morningside College, Sioux City, Iowa. He graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in 1938. He taught history and coached in Mount Auburn, Griswold, Orchard and St. Ansgar before accepting the position of youth director with the Mason City YMCA. In 1947, he became the executive director, a position he held until 1968.

The family moved to Rapid City, S.D., when John opened a new building, organizing one of the early family YM-YWCA’s serving as the executive director. He moved back to Mason City in 1969 and began a massive fund drive in 1972 to expand and renovate the 1928 building to implement a “family YMCA.”

He retired in 1978. During his career, some of his accomplishments were working in conjunction with the school system the first Gray-Y program for all the grade schools, opening the Hi-Dive Youth Center for high school students which was in operation for 20 years, and implementing the “family YMCA” in Mason City, a new concept to the area. His career priority was focused on encouraging youth to reach their fullest potential.

John was united in marriage to Opal Leonard on July 31, 1938, in Boone, Iowa, on the family farm. Officiating was John’s brother, Joseph. Opal died on Dec. 13, 1980. On Sept. 9, 1990, John married Rosalyn Schutt-Decker.

John was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ since 1943, serving on various boards and committees. He actively worked on the early vision of Opportunity Village, worked on United Way Campaigns and was a member of the Professional Society of YMCA Directors, Kiwanis Club, and the Mason City Foundation.

He enjoyed all spectator sports, actively played football, basketball, handball, and following his retirement, golf. John also enjoyed traveling. A favorite trip of his was to Greece. Family fishing trips were enjoyed in northern Minnesota for years and later winters in Arizona.

John is survived by his wife, Rosalyn, of Mason City; sons, John C. (Camille) of West Des Moines, Jay L. of Chicago, Ill.; stepchildren, Kristine (Chris) Harrison of West Des Moines, Kathy (Dale) Mestas of Overland Park, Kan., and Eric (Sara) Decker of Lanesboro, Minn.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; and nephews.

John was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Opal; and brothers, Joe and Richard.

Phyllis Orton

Mason City — Phyllis Orton, 85, Mason City, died Friday (May 26, 2006) at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, Minn.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 213 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Kathy Graves officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave. in Mason City, and one hour before the service on Thursday at the church.

Ruth Phyllis Orton was born Jan. 1, 1921, in Radcliffe, Iowa, the daughter of William and Emma (Elwick) Hoffman. She attended Waldorf College in Forest City then St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn. Phyllis graduated cum laude in music and English. Following college, she taught school in a rural one-room schoolhouse.

Phyllis married Lawrence C. Orton on May 12, 1945, in Radcliffe, Iowa. She thought she was marrying a farmer, but that was not the case. After serving in World War II as a naval officer and seeing the suffering of others, Larry decided to go to medical school. Following medical school, Phyllis and Larry settled in Mason City. The couple raised three sons and a daughter. Besides raising her family, Phyllis was always supportive of her husband’s career.

Phyllis was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served as the youth choir director for many years. Her faith in the Lord kept her strong and allowed her to find joy in working with church circles, TLCW, various committees and quilting for Lutheran World Relief.

She was active in girl scouting and served as council president. She was presented the Thanks Badge by the council honoring her years of service. She was also an active member of the Matinee Musical and PEO Chapter IW. Phyllis was also very proud of her involvement and support of the Christian radio station KCMR. She was instrumental in implementing the annual “KMCR Live.” Phyllis was an accomplished pianist and accompanied many area vocalists and instrumental groups.

When her husband suffered a severe stroke in 1983, she diligently cared for him until his death in 1987. Phyllis enjoyed time spent with family and friends and loved playing the piano and knitting. She also enjoyed cooking delicious Norwegian meals.

In her latter years, she suffered from Parkinson’s disease and finally died from the illness. A constant encourager and a courageous fighter, she will always serve as an inspiration for those who loved and knew her.

Phyllis is survived by her children and their families, Lambert Orton and wife, Robyn, and their daughter, Emily, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Brent Orton and wife, Donna, and their children, Mark, Chrismar, Matt and Kiersten, of Mason City, Paul Orton and wife, Sue, and their children, Sam, Jessie and Haley, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Sarah Bowen and husband, Mike, of Mason City.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Lawrence C. Orton, and sister, Hazel Lehman.

Diane (Nielson) Basore

DENVER, Colo. — Diane (Nielson) Basore, 70, of Denver, Colo., formerly of Mason City, Iowa, died Thursday (May 25, 2006) in Denver, Colo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Augustana Lutheran Church, 5000 E. Alameda, Denver, Colo.

Donations may be made in her name to the Arthritis Foundation, American Kidney Association or Hospice of choice.

Diane Lois Nielson was born Dec. 1, 1935, in Rochester, Minn., to Alfred and Alice (Robb) Nielson. She moved to Mason City with her family in 1940, attended Mason City schools and graduated from Mason City High School in 1953. She graduated from Hamilton Business College and went to work in the office for Sears Roebuck from 1955 to 1958, at which time she moved to Denver, Colo. She married Jim Basore in April 1960. Diane worked for Conoco Oil Co. in Denver, until the birth of their son, Chris, in 1965.

She loved to tend to her flowers and enjoyed being a homemaker. She was loved very much by family and friends and will be missed by many.

From the age of 16, she battled rheumatoid arthritis and many illnesses. She was very courageous and never felt sorry for herself.

Survivors include her husband, Jim, Denver, Colo.; son, Chris, Denver, Colo.; brother, Ron (Evonka) Nielson, Mason City; sister, Ellie (Tom) Swale, Clive; nephews, Eric and Kurt Nielson and Todd and Andy Swale; nieces, Heather Thompson and Stacy Bello; great-nephews, Geoffrey Thompson, Peter Nielson, Zach Bello and Stephen Swale; and great-nieces, Erin Thompson, Margaret Bello and Elsie and Emily Swale.

She was preceded in death by her parents and great-niece, Katie Nielson.
