LaVon Nolan Hruska

BELMOND — LaVon Nolan Hruska, 89, a former longtime resident of Belmond, Iowa, passed away Thursday morning (May 11, 2006) at the Mercy Hospice House in Johnston, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. The Rev. Chris Podhajsky, the Rev. James McAlpin and the Rev. Monsignor Alvan Heuring will be officiating. Burial will be in the St. Francis Catholic Cemetery near Belmond.

Visitation will be held at Andrews Funeral Home, 516 First St. S.E, Belmond, on Monday, May 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. A parish rosary will take place at the funeral home at 4:45 p.m. and parish vigil service at 7:45 pm. Visitation will continue Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.

Born Mary LaVon Stahly on April 11, 1917, on a farm near Ocheydan, Iowa, to Ezra and Mable Weaver Stahly, she began her life as a farm girl on her maternal grandparents’ farm. The family moved to Spencer, Iowa, where her father started a car dealership and eventually became sheriff of Pocahontas County. LaVon and her brother were school children during the Depression era as her father lost the dealership and a grandfather lost the entire proceeds from the sale of his farm by depositing the money in the bank the day before they closed. Since most Iowans were in the same condition, LaVon was raised believing that hardship was a normal condition of life. She recalled selling doughnuts made by her mother door to door and using strips of cardboard to fill in the holes in her shoes.

LaVon was a beautiful woman in spirit and physical attributes. As Miss Pocahontas County 1935, she was much in demand on the dance floor at dance pavilions in Northwest Iowa, especially those in Twin Lakes and Okoboji like The Ridotto (which she named in a contest) and the Lizard Lake pavilion. She loved to dance and met her future husband on the dance floor. He was the Irish violin-playing, fun-loving Donald Nolan of Palmer, Iowa, who won her hand in marriage. After completing business college in Chillicothe, Mo., she returned to Pocahontas to work in the county attorney’s office and then married Don who had just completed pharmacy college and purchased the Tierney Drug Store in Palmer. While in Palmer, daughters Donna Clair and Bonnie Jane were born. The family later resided in Mapleton and Fort Dodge before settling in Belmond in 1949, where LaVon would reside for the next 50 years.

For the 1950s, LaVon was not your average housewife. While rearing her daughters, she actively worked side by side with Don at the Nolan Rexall drug store. LaVon made ice cream and popcorn to buy her daughters’ snowsuits, won a dining room set from Kodak for her marketing ideas and managed gift and cosmetic inventory as well as assisting Don in the pharmacy department. Don passed away in 1964 and LaVon managed the drug store until she sold it to Erv and Rita Redder.

LaVon was in the basement of her home on Second Street in the fall of 1966 when a tornado ripped through Belmond and she was left standing and uninjured but with no home above her and losing most of her possessions. She married a Belmond widower physician, Glenn Hruska, in 1967.

LaVon’s life continued to center around her family, children, grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren. She never missed an opportunity to be with her family and cherished every card, letter or phone call from family and friends.

Her volunteer works included Meals on Wheels, the Catholic Youth Organization and the Belmond Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed membership in Catholic Daughters of the Americas, St. Elizabeth Club, Kensington Club, PEO and Century Club. She was a member of the building planning board for the present St. Francis Xavier Church where she also served as a Eucharistic minister.

LaVon relocated to Des Moines in 1999 where she enjoyed being closer to other family members.

She leaves behind a lasting legacy of endurance, courage, faith in God and love.

LaVon is survived by two daughters, Donna Larson and her husband Larry, of Carmel, Calif., and Bonnie Wedeking Murray and her husband, John Murray, of Vancouver, Wash., along with three stepchildren, Jeff Hruska of Boone, Dr. Jonathan Hruska and his wife, Lynn, of Storm Lake, and Molly Ketchum of Boone; 10 grandchildren, Mark Larson and wife, Kathy, Lori Bernecker and husband, Larry, Michael Wedeking and wife, Amy, Kathleen Borgeson and husband, Erik, Patrick Wedeking and wife, Sabre, Michelle Ketchum, Chad Ketchum and wife, Tina, Nathan Hruska and wife, Julie, Jennifer Hruska, and Kristin Shiffler and husband, Matt; 20 great-grandchildren, Sarah, Claire and Nolan Larson, Logan, Sean, Blake and Kate Bernecker, Allison and Emily Borgeson, Tyler, Keelan and Shay Wedeking, Stone and Lauren Wedeking, Katie, Kelsey, Konner and Karter Ketchum and Ethan and Sydney Hruska.

Lavon was preceded in death by her husbands, Donald Nolan in 1964 and Dr. Glenn Hruska in 1986; and one brother, Daryle Stahly.
