Thoughts, condolences and stories may be e-mailed to the family on the www.fullertonfh.com Web site.

Delbert John Arndt was born Nov. 12, 1919, in Rockwell, Iowa, to Emil and Clara Christina (Schroeder) Arndt. He was the third son and fourth child of nine children born to his parents. “Del” or “Delb,” as he was fondly known by his family and friends, attended a rural country school near Rockwell and worked for a local farmer and Decker meat packing during his early adult years. He was often found outdoors working, cutting wood, sledding, tinkering on cars, hunting or fishing.

Delb met his future wife and the love of his life, Hazel Louise Harrison, in Mason City. After dating for approximately a year, Delbert and Hazel were united in marriage on Jan. 16, 1939, at the Lutheran parsonage in Mason City. They later became the proud and busy parents of seven daughters and one son. Delb’s wife and children recall wonderful Sunday afternoon car rides, visiting grandparents and stopping for ice cream cones to top off the fun day!

On March 31, 1944, Delbert was drafted and inducted into the United States Army from Camp Dodge, Iowa, and served his country in Europe during World War II. Delbert sadly said his good-byes to his wife and four young daughters, realizing his fifth daughter would be born soon after his departure. While diligently combating for his country, Delbert was taken hostage in France and became a prisoner of war. On Oct. 29, 1945, Delbert was formally and honorably discharged from his military duties due to a serious injury received in conflict overseas. He separated from Fort Sheridan, Ill., respectfully earning a Purple Heart and other medals of honor, and rejoined his family in Iowa.

Delb was a hard worker and great provider for his family. He was employed at the Lehigh Portland Cement Co. for 32 years as a mill operator and heavy equipment operator. Delb was also the owner of D&A Transfer in Mason City. His company unloaded railroad freight and delivered it to various businesses.

Delb was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church and a lifetime member of the Moose Lodge and VFW Lodge, all in Mason City.

Some of Delb’s other interests and hobbies included hunting small game, fishing (especially trout) and camping with Hazel and other family and friends, visiting his daughter in Wisconsin and fishing at Moen Lake Chain-fourth lake, racing “fixer-up cars” around the cob pile in his earlier years, playing cards, dancing with Hazel, especially if the “Blue Skirt Waltz,” Big Band or Lawrence Welk music was being played, trying his luck at games of chance at various casinos and visiting with friends. Hazel’s homemade potato soup and pies were a special delight to Delb.

Delb treasured time spent with his entire family and is described as a firm but loving man who was highly respected. He liked to tease his grandchildren and looked forward to the Friday Lunch Bunch outings with his family.

…And That There!!

Delb will be dearly and sadly missed by all who have shared in his life.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Hazel Arndt, of Mason City; his children, Shirley (Duane) Ballhagen of Rockwell, Bonnie (Bill) Dodge of Nora Springs, Joann (Curt) Nelson of Garner, Sharon Dixon of Sheffield, Sally (Joe) Herrera of Mason City, Sue (Bob) Schissel of Rockwell, Delbert “Butch” Arndt of Mason City and Carolyn (Cal) Weck of Rhinelander, Wis.; his three brothers, Darrel (Rita) Arndt of St. Cloud, Minn., John (Carol) Arndt of Minneapolis, Minn. and Bob (Joyce) Arndt of Rogers, Minn. Delb will also be a cherished memory to his 32 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.

Preceding Delb in death are his parents; his sister, Clara Mae Smith; his four brothers, Velder, Lloyd, Roger and Donald Arndt; his sons-in-law, Sonny Dixon and Gary Schissel; his grandson, Will Ballhagen; and his two great-grandchildren, Noah Dixon and Mickayla Fecteau.

Neil H. Plopper

ORLANDO, Fla. — Neil H. Plopper, 83, passed away on Thursday, Feb. 23, 2006. He was a PGA Golf Professional for 58 years.

Neil was born in Lime Springs, Iowa, on June 5, 1922, but grew up in Mason City. He attended Mason City High School, where he was on the 1939 state championship basketball team. He was also a member of the high school golf team that won the Big Four Conference golf crown in 1940.

He married his high school sweetheart, the former Grace I. Ladwig of Mason City, on Aug. 17, 1941. Barely four months later, when Pearl Harbor was attacked, Neil immediately joined the United States Navy where he served as a machinist’s mate second class on board the USS Altair, until his discharge in October 1945.

After the war, Neil received his PGA “Golf Professional” appointment in May 1948. He worked at various country clubs, including Mason City Country Club, and also played tournament events throughout the North Iowa area, winning the Iowa Open in 1952.

He and Grace spent several winters in the Central Florida area before permanently relocating to Orlando in 1960. His first pro position there was at the Orlando Air Force Base that eventually became the Orlando Naval Training Center. In 1967, he accepted the position of head pro at Rio Pinar Country Club in southeast Orlando. He held this position during the heyday of the PGA’s “Florida Citrus Open.” After the death of his wife, Grace, in 1975, Neil left Rio Pinar Country Club.

Neil then moved to New Smyrna Beach, Fla., where he helped open a new golf course called Fairgreen Golf and Country Club. He married the former Lee M. Tucker in March 1978. They eventually relocated to Dayton, Wash., where Neil turned a small golf course, run by the city recreation department, into the now popular Dayton Country Club. Neil finally retired in 1997 and he and Lee decided to return to Orlando in 1998 where they have enjoyed being with family and friends in the Ventura Country Club community. Several years ago, a brick was laid in Neil’s honor by his children at the World Golf Hall of Fame in St. Augustine, Fla.

Neil is survived by his wife of 28 years, Lee Plopper; his daughter, Susan Brown, and husband, Bob, of Orlando; his son, Mike Plopper, and wife, Marta, of San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Shelby Faddis and husband, Dustin, of Orlando, Zach, Eli and Danielle Plopper of San Diego, Mike Kelly and wife, Stacie, of Winter Park; great-grandchildren, Zoe and Gavin Faddis of Orlando and Tucker and Vaughn Kelly of Winter Park; and several nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
