NORTHFIELD, MINN. —

St. John’s Lutheran
Church, 500 W. Third St.
in Northfield.
Visitation will be 6 to
8 p.m. Tuesday at Benson
Langehough Funeral Home,
201 Fourth St. in
Northfield, and one hour
prior to the service at
the church on Wednesday.
A Lutheran pastor who
lived in Northfield for
his 18-year retirement,
the Rev. Smestad served
parishes in Pelican
Rapids, New Richland,
Mapleton, and Kenyon,
Minn.; and Orofino,
Idaho. He served on the
board of St. John’s
Lutheran Home in Albert
Lea for several years
and was a member of the
Northfield Retired
Pastors’ Association,
the Sons of Norway, the
Northfield VFW post and
the 459th Bomber Group
Association. Beginning
in the 1980s, he
attended several
reunions of the latter
organization, often
delivering the
meditation at memorial
services. He began his
ministry on Sept. 1,
1952, when he began
serving Medo Lutheran
Church in rural
Mapleton, and ended his
ministry exactly 53
years later. He set a
good example for a
lifetime of service to
family, congregation,
and community.
The Rev. Smestad
graduated from Westbrook
(Minnesota) High School,
St. Olaf College in
Northfield, and Luther
Seminary in St Paul.
Prior to his career in
the parish ministry, he
worked as a farm laborer
and later moved to
California to work in
the aircraft industry.
He was employed with
Douglas Aircraft in
Santa Monica in the
early 1940s. In 1942, he
enlisted in the Army Air
Corps, serving as a
radioman on a B-24 heavy
bomber stationed in
Italy. Lowell earned an
honorable discharge in
October 1945, with a
good conduct medal,
Purple Heart, five
battle stars, and an Air
Medal with two oak leaf
clusters.
Lowell Harding Smestad
was born Dec. 11, 1920,
in Dovray, Minn., to
Helge and Mathilda
(Hojem) Smestad. He was
baptized and confirmed
at Our Savior’s Lutheran
Church in Dovray. He
married Helen Eulalie
Fagerholt on Aug. 10,
1952, in Hoople, N.D.
Lowell was a loving
husband, brother,
father, father-in-law,
grandfather and uncle.
Hearing his chuckle and
seeing the accompanying
twinkle in his eyes when
sharing a joke was a
delight. While not
admitting to being a
feminist, he was quietly
but thoroughly proud of
the accomplishments of
his wife and daughters.
His family and
congregation members
will long remember his
powerful singing and
speaking voice, his
eloquent sermons, and
his ability to comfort
those who sought his
guidance during
difficult times. His
favorite pastoral duty
was baptizing infants,
and he was pleased to
baptize his four
daughters, four
grandchildren and a
son-in-law.
He followed the
Minnesota Twins almost
religiously, and enjoyed
spending winters in
Arizona, where he could
play golf while
Minnesotans back home
experienced snow and
cold.
Memorials preferred to
Lutheran Social Service,
Luther Seminary,
Lutheran World Relief,
Red Cross Disaster Fund,
St. John’s Stewards of
Grace fund, or donor’s
choice.
In addition to his wife,
Helen, he is survived by
a sister, Grace (Ev)
Tande of Missoula,
Mont.; four daughters
and sons-in-law: Ruth
and Ronnie Anglin of
West Bay, Grand Cayman,
Gloria Smestad and John
Maher of Chula Vista,
Calif., Joanne and Kurt
Claussen of Apple
Valley, Minn., and Carol
and Gary Anderson of
Mason City, Iowa; four
grandchildren: Lucas
Anglin, Helene Anglin,
Justine Maher, and
Philip Claussen; and
many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death
by his parents; brother,
Halge; sister, Ruth; and
infant sister, Julia.
Halge’s death on the USS
Arizona in Pearl Harbor
on Dec. 7, 1941, was a
loss from which Lowell
never really recovered.
